    I saw this when you released it last year before I wanted to pursue architecture. Coming from a CM background, I've never had to make a portfolio. One year later, I just had my MArch program interview, and this video helped tremendously. Thank you, Eric. Professional as always.

    As a student, I constantly tell myself that grades don't truly matter, what matters most is that I create content with strong ideas, so that one day I will have a portfolio that I am proud of.

    • @30by40

      that's absolutely the right perspective to have +Liba Land, well said!
      I think there's this - nearly universal - aversion to looking back at a portfolio you created a year ago or five years ago. it's hard to do because as a designer, you can't help but see all the flaws, right? but, you'll also learn to see the good ideas, the kernels of truth, hidden in there too and those are the things you'll keep working on - that's your life's work. it changes a little with each line you draw. cheers...

      I was going through my semesters with this mindset.. After 4 semesters I'm left with unfinish plain projects with very less technical knowledge. I realised that aiming to get good grades really pushes your limits and creativity and obv more knowledge of whatever you were studying. Aim for A+ and only then your project will look A+!

    How I love this channel! I'm not even an architect, I'm a musician. The way you expose the ideas, you skecht them and go through from the macro to the microcosmos leading who is watching your videos step by step. I'm sure I can also rob somethings from here for my own c.v..

    I just learned of 30X40 yesterday, as I worked on some sketches for a design project. I have been in landscape design build (more build than design) for most of my career. I am working to develop more design skills, and even considering graduate school for an MLA (in my late 50's) I already found your work to be incredibly informative, and important. As well as motivating and inspiring. Thanks so much.

    Finally got around to watching this. I like a portfolio that sets a mood as well. I try to do that on my own website (which, as usual, is incomplete) Having done job searches fairly recently, I find that most firms are still advertising specific CAD skills. Even when looking for someone with 10 or more years of experience. I take that to mean they want drafting help more than anything.

    • @30by40
      @30by40  7 років тому +3

      hey Robert Swinburne great hearing from you...
      my only beef with focusing on the CAD aspect in a portfolio is that it's a commodity skill set. I - maybe naively - assume that everyone can use CAD nowadays. I think the real differentiator is creativity and if a firm is hiring just based on drafting ability it's probably going to be an unrewarding meat grinder...

    I certainly agree with most of what you have said but I have personally found that which is contrary to what you've said about resume emails. If I were an architect, I would delete the formal emails too but some countries still have those formats as the norm, and anything that is adverse to that is seen as incompetent.

    This is a bit sad because I LOVE printing profesional work. Feeling the paper gives a lot of warmness. While I surely would do a digital portfolio for convenience, I think paper portfolios speak to the client with that warmth I mentioned earlier. It makes them feel that you both already have a personal and warm relatiomship

    I see so many high quality 3D renders that it sometimes makes me insecure about my own work. Truth is, my degree program does not concentrate on digital renders at all. We only learn properly rendering by the 5th semester, and still usually, the focus for projects is on model building and hand sketching. The office where I did my internship also did not even own 3D software except on one computer - that was the youngest employee's. Everyone else did not do 3D at all, and it worked for them. I was told that most firms outsource their renderings abroad because it is way too time-intensive to pay. So I am not sure how relevant the skill is, but in the end, my portfolio does not look as shiny and sleak as 90% of what I see being judged as "good student portfolios".

    I must say that I partially disagree about not needing a paper portfolio. While I see the advantages of a digital portfolio and think you should definitely have one, physical portfolios just have a superior quality to them and add a special touch by choice of paper, format and other design elements of the booklet itself. I believe that sending in something physical could give you an advantage at some firms, as they will likely have it laying around and possibly pick it up again (instead of it being a completely hidden document in one persons inbox they may just delete). There's less of it chance for it to be overseen and it shows a kind of dedication.

      hi, +KaR Ze...I'll see what I can do...

    • @30by40
      @30by40  7 років тому +3

      hi +R Ok, there's no software per se that compiles building codes in one place (that I know of). In the USA, there are Federal codes/regs (ANSI, ADA, NFPA, NEC); State Codes which can sometimes adopt /modify the Federal ones (energy, building, plumbing, elec), and then there's local codes (zoning, building, shoreland, wetland, etc.) It's complex! It's one reason why many architects work on a limited number of building typologies (say schools, or retail, or multi-family) as it makes the research process more efficient. Once you know the basic parameters it's easier to keep up with changes over time too.
      There are also code consultants who can help sort through compliance for the more complicated building types/jurisdictions. For multi-year design projects compliance can be a real problem as regulations can change mid-stream making designs impossible to build.

As you emphasized the digital portfolio/self-managed website/ link is wonderful and means the client on the other side of the world could check out your work. However, once we met I would go over the paper portfolio.
    Stunning paper portfolio, by the way, Eric:-)

    Great video, thank you! One thing I'm curious about - the last time I was job searching (2-3 years ago) it seemed like a lot of firms were still expecting a physical portfolio. Have things really shifted that much lately? I definitely see the value of a website folio, but I think a very fair percentage of firms are still not moved that way yet. Do you have a guess as to what percentage of firms might be okay with just a website?
    Similarly, with just a website, what do you recommend bringing in with you to an interview? Physical portfolios serve as a nice centerpiece for ~10-15 minutes of discussion in the interview process and a jumping off point for you to discuss your past experiences and roles on jobs. You mentioned not to put CD's on a website (agree) but what about bringing a full or half size set to the interview?
    Thank you for your thoughts!

    • @30by40
      @30by40  7 років тому +1

      For me, I would care a whole lot less about percentages of firms looking for one thing or another or what they might be expecting of you necessarily. You should do what's best for you and your work. If you're confident in your decisions and you do good work then the presentation vehicle won't matter. As you know, I think that a website is (currently) the best place for your portfolio to live. I can almost guarantee this is the direction every firm is moving toward, it's certainly not headed back the other way. So, if you do it now, you're leading the way. If a firm is so dogmatic that they insist you use an antiquated presentation methodology, consider whether that's a firm you'd really want to work for.
      RE: presentation format. Bring either a laptop or a tablet to the interview. It can still be used as a talking point and I personally never found that a single copy of a portfolio was all that convenient for interviews where more than one partner is in the room. With a website, multiple partners can load your site on their devices (phones/laptops) too.
      RE: the CDs. Here again, you shape the narrative with what you bring to the interview. If you show up with a set of construction documents, you're telling them that you're the CD guy. Totally fine, amazing skills to have and if that's the position you want it's probably fine. However, if you're looking to be a lead designer that requires different messaging.
      Cheers...

    can you make a video about what's the fuzz around revit? i still can get the hype for that trash. For me:
    - you need to make plans then go on CAD
    - you need to model then go on 3dmax/maya, SU or Rhino
    - need to make fancy Bjarke-like diagrams then go on SU
    Seriously i can't get it.

      @franz_mori 7 років тому +6

      Hi! "One man's trash is another man's treasure."
      As a Revit user I can tell you the fuzz about it is that you can get 2D Drawings (plans, elevations and sections), schedules, and 3D model with just ONE software. You can also work with templates on views so you don't spend unnecesary time making layouts and It's really useful to coordinate MEP too.
      Long story short:
      Revit is more useful for construction documents. For conceptual design or visual representation, any other program would be enough, if not that better. So it really depends on what you need.

    • @Tom_Hadler

    Hi there! First of all congrets for your incredible work on this channel.
    I'm a student and I started to follow your channel a few weaks ago. To be honest I think I learned more from you vídeos than in this entire year in school, so I wondered if you came help me with something. Recently i've been less and less motivated to pursuit my dream of become an architect. my opinion i think I'm tired of school since I've been there for so long now. for there last 7 years I've been a part time worker and a part time student and this is the only way i can afford to keep in school. So, my question is: what can I do to keep my motivation going? you probably remembre those days at school when your exausted and you need to keep the work going. what you think might help me to push through insted of making me think "ok, can't do this anymore!" hope you can help me since i found some inspiration on you vídeos, and most likely there is a lot of other people on the same situation and I'm sure they found a lot inspiration and answers on your channel to. peraps you can make a video about this topic or just have a simple conversation. I'll stay tunned and waiting you answer!
    sorry for the long post and my terrible english!

    He says that Behance might seize to exist tomorrow and then suggests you to create a portfolio on Squarespace? So that makes sense since Squarespace is seize-to-exist-proof?

    Hi! I'm glad I stumbled with this video, thank you for it. Last time I updated my portfolio was 4 years ago, after I graduated. Ever since, I've been working as a BIM modeller and BIM coordinator of a firm where only the CEO designs. Now I want to update my portfolio and I have no clue what to put in it, and unfortunately I haven't done personal works as an architect since university. What would you recommend me? :s

      in short, consider where you want to be and what you want to be doing, shape your portfolio around that.

    Hi sir, I had a doubt.
    Is the display book the portfolio or do we have a different book as a portfolio?
    It's a silly question, but please answer it. 🙏🙏
    Thank you.

    Hi! I recently graduated with my bachelors degree in architecture and I'm beginning to finalize my portfolio to apply for internships. Since I have no experience in the field yet, I know that my portfolio is a very important tool to start my career but I'm having a difficult time sorting through my final 2 years of projects as well as a semesters worth of sketches from studying abroad to choose the "right" ones. Being that I'm freshly graduated, would you say that I should include more or less of my studio work?

    That was so useful, I have a question if I worked a long time for interior fit out construction company and it is not good to include my work there, then my portfolio is going to be so poor. :( any suggestions?
    And if so, is it possible to design and produce project image even if it is just theoretical and no client involved?

      glad you found it helpful +anhar alsakhi ...above all else, your portfolio should be a reflection of who you are as a designer and the kind of professional work you want to be doing more of. There are only a few ways I know of stacking your portfolio with work you're proud to show: work for someone else making things you admire, or (as you suggest) begin doing or creating the work on your own; work that does represent you. good luck!

    I'm an interior arch. student in semester 4 & I have to create portfolio for an internship that I have to do during the next semester. My problem is that most of the things I created, up until very recently, look really unprofessional, mostly hand drawn (we only just started learning 2D CAD last semester) and I am quite unhappy with almost everything. We just kinda figured out how to present things as we were going along, because there were virtually no guidelines or instructions, and it resulted in a lot of drawings that just... aren't presentable. Many of them also do not have anything to do with architecture, since our 1st and 2nd semester profs gave us a lot of really abstract tasks. And those that *do* have to do with it simply ignore physics and building policies all together and will probably make any architect gasp in disbelief.
    Is there any advice on how to make this work? I was considering to just redo many drawings digitally to make them look better, but it seems like an insane amount of work and I don't know if that's what they wanna see, because it wouldn't be "original". My model photos are also trash for a big part, but I cannot redo those and the models aren't fully intact anymore. I just feel like I've achieved nothing up until now, but I HAVE to find a place in order to continue studying 🤦‍♀

    May I Please ask whether the " Dear sir or madam.." emails are viewed this way by all firms? Isn't giving a personal message like "hey I like this your work..." a bit informal especially for bigger firms? cause usually a message would go to the HR or smth. Or what you said is more relevant to firms own by indivduals ?

    Im in my 1st year of my college and architecture is the course i took. I was doing well back then but I was discouraged by people who criticize archi. They would say "architecture is nothing without engineers" or "archts works for long hours but payed less" or "architects are engineers who cant do math"...... and now goddamn it everytime i make projects i get less motivated...

    Just wanted to say thank you for this video, it really resonated with me. I also found it kind of funny that everything you said we shouldn't do, is actually being done by a few classmates of mine.

      +chrisgrechhamster you're quite welcome, hope you can put it to use as you build your portfolio.
      don't they say, "put 5 architects in a room and you'll get 6 opinions..."? This is just my take on things, presuming your classmates have a reason behind what they're doing in all for it...hard to know without understanding the context I suppose. Thanks for watching!

      I have a resource page with links here: thirtybyforty.com/architect-and-entrepreneur-resources I started with Bluehost (and I'm still there as it's inexpensive: www.bluehost.com/track/ereinholdt/), also Squarespace makes it quite easy...you can purchase hosting directly through them or through a third party. Very simple.
