- I lucked out and acquired the "Blu Starr" sapphire claim this last winter. Spring is now here and I was able to go out and investigate it for the first time. And sure enough I found amazing Star Sapphires on the claim and was able to bring back some amazing specimens.

The fun of seeing the gems in their raw state and how so many kinds there are in one fairly small place. Thank you for sharing.
Gold is sweet, but there's something special about gemstones. Gold is almost entirely a quantity game unless you get a special sample, but finding a beautiful individual gem can be way more rewarding than a bunch of smaller ones that add up to the same weight.
I mean afterall, it does come down to cut, color, clarity and carat, not carat alone. That’s why a big cracked and faded gem isn’t nearly as expensive as a pristine, smaller, more vibrant gem. Just makes those jackpot finds even sweeter
Great comment. Gold fever is real.
Yeah that's true, but all he's found are dull blackish samples that have 0 color....
Hehehe jokes on you. Grey star sapph is one of the prettiest, yes, even moreso than blue, impo.
@@TheLovelorn192 sometimes, you want the inclusions. Too many fakes and lab created gemstones out there. Just like cars, some people want all the rust and the original scratches with the original parts on 1962 Ford galaxy compared to one that been totally rebuilt. I love the inclusions. That way I know it's real.
This new claim is pretty exciting. I can't wait to see more
For those asking, the picture in the thumbnail is of gems found on this site by one of the previous claim owners. Both the rough and the finished products. I sure hope to one day find and make gems like these.
Are you going to heat treat?
if they are star sapphires you should show a cut one with a star. otherwise they are just massive sapphire.
I have to say Dan that you are an inspiration on how you been generous and seem to be building a community of people that are all like minded and fun to watch.
💯🤜🤛😁👍🙏
Dan Hurd is living the dream!
Thank You Dan!! Was in the Yukon, Burwash Creek, 1984' gold mining, placer.. We found good gold, but also garnets, saphs, copper, lead, and much more. Was the Best time of my life!!! Best thing I found was 2 Nice "what they call" Yukon diamonds! Grew up in the oilfields of Kansas of all places. Geology is a passion, connect to the Earth, maybe not get rich in "material" things found, but to just see, and imagine the forces that it took to make it happen!! I climbed Mountains of granit, shist, and on top of one, right along the ridge of Kluani Glacire River rocks! Alluvial! Found many old hardrock mines,, Old!! Thank You!!
Dan: we have too much!
Also Dan: want to keep that one, that one, that one...
Dan you're living the dream ❤️
I have for several years watched a UA-cam channel "Tim's Adventures'" of sapphire mining in the RUBYVALE diggings in Queensland Australia. Rubyvale is a small commercial diggings area which is part of a huge area of a few thousand Square kilometers of gem deposits with high Sapphire yields. Also zircon spinel and other good stuff. The area is about 500km inland near Rockhampton.
Most of that entire area is reserved for gem fossicking. Only a restricted area is available for commercial mining using machinery. The rest is open for manual digging, washing, sieve work, where NO LARGE MACHINERY IS ALLOWED. Back in 1972/73 summer my dad and I spent NewYear visiting a large public diggings called 'Wiilow Field' near Rubyvale, that in winter months (dry part of the year) is extensively dug over by people. Many go to side 4wd trails used by many to reach various ancient creek beds with fantastic valuable gems. We were there at New Year, so summer, which is the wet season, Monsoon time.
As a result we could not sensibly dig as the layers with gems are then sticky grey putty like clay, where every pebble must be hand washed to remove the wet clay, so wasting lots of effort and time, liable to find nothing. We instead just fossicked the rubble piles of last season for gems washed free by rain.
Over a week we found enough of gem and star sapphires that the local tourist caravan park operator wanted to offer $400 for, but we kept them.
In 1994 I did a long holiday to North Queensland and again visited the area and also the Willows Rubyvale and a diggings far into hills beyond Rubyvale, called Tomahawk Creek. That we avoided visiting in 1970s as heavy rain made it risky to get stranded , which then did trap people for a month. On my 1994 visit several people were finding clear colourful and star sapphire gems to 40 carat size, some said but did not show having bigger ones. There are regular gems of hundred carat or more, and in 1972 visit a family showed a straw yellow cut gem insured for $275,000 that their secret spot yielded the year before. We had to wait with headlights on while they with lights off went offroad cross country to their private spot.
I on the 1994 trip bought some cut blue sapphires, 6 cut stones total near 15 carats, from a miner doing own cutting for very reasonable price.
Other than the sapphire diggings also visited Agate Creek finding kgs of agates and thunder eggs and another gem digging where I got a jam jar full of Aquamarine crystals and some nice Tourmaline.
On other travels have had several Opal trips, and to Garnet and Zircon diggings. Locally closer to home in Victoria many trips for various Quartz - smokey, citrine and amethyst. Have many kgs of various gems on hand.
I think you would love visiting some of thesecareas too. Watch some of Tim's videos of the past year, currently he is on holiday to Thailand and Philipines, the latter he wants to setup a marketing cutting operation to process his mine produce but the travel videos are not as nice as actual diggings, trammels separating, washing and sorting the gems. Give his Sapphire videos a try.
I just found his channel about 8 months ago, subbed because it was different from all the other mining channels.
I got a couple of nice party coloured sapphires from rubyvale just fossicking tailings on my parents friends rubyvale claim.
Whenever Tim posted a new video it was the first I'd watch. I miss his mining and finding shows.
It's so exciting to see gemstone claim !!
I just want to cry. This is just super amazing and a dream of mine. I hope to find amazing stones like these. I keep hunting!! It's sooo fun!
Invest in a claim that dan is trying yo buy;!lol, bad joke. If i was able to, that would be the way, get a known gemstone claim not played out.
Man I went today and found some gem stones to bud learning as I go too
It is outstanding to see you spreading your interests into gems… I love your shows Mr. Dan… stay healthy
“Now you have 3!” Adorable ☺️
Would love to see a show on how one processes the raw crystals into jewelry quality.
This is what I'd like to know, too!
How they cut them, or heat treatment?
Google it or look it up on UA-cam. There are lots of gem cutting videos on line.
check out "Black opal direct", he is a guy from Australia that shows how he cuts cabochon opals from raw to gemstone. Its not facets but cabochon and still very amazing to watch
My grandfather made my mom her Wedding ring out of gemstones that he dug up on his claim.
Hey Dan! Just inherited the 6" Lee faceting machine, that I learned to cut gems with both mom and stepdad with. Surprise, it included a cabber, and a Starlap polisher! Forgot that I'd identified they'd found Star Rubies. So, I am definitely interested in cabbing some Star Sapphires, along with faceting other gems. I can handle fairly large, with the equipment I have.
Awesome! I love sapphires. You're a very blessed man, Dan!
I’d like to see a video of you extracting and also polishing the sapphires. A nice long video
I'm always late Dan. I grew up around where Pauly has leases, not quite at Sooke but close.
I left for Fort St John in 1980 and lived there until 2003.
I have always been a fossil hunter. I have found a lot of fossils in the Fort St John area and across the WAC Bennett Dam. There are still a lot I couldn't lift out of there.
Since foolishly moving to Alberta, I have learned a lot from you, about the many different types of gems and minerals available. Somewhere in my parents boxes of stuff, there is something that looks like a Spear Head made out of Nephrite Jade I think. It is so smooth it almost looked machined. We found it rototilling a new garden on LaFortune Rd. Just north of Mill Bay. If I find it again I will send you a picture, it seems a strange thing to find.
Love your channel Dan.
those dogs look to be actual rock hounds
Can't wait for all the gem adventures. It's so exciting to see gems revealed!
That is really nice to see! Looks like another great claim with many interesting videos to come! Thanks for taking us along.
There is something oddly satisfying about seeing those spikes being hammered in...and the sound!
I have some blue sapphires I use when I play Magic: the Gathering. There's limited table space so I use them to tap stuff. They're my mana rocks.
I haven't played any TGCs in a long time and never played magic but that's sounds pretty cool haha
Those are very expensive Mana rocks
Not necessarily. Sapphires, just like all other gemstones depend on quality to be valuable. Color, clarity and carat weight decide value. Some sapphire rough isn't of a quality that makes it even worth cutting.
@@12345674309 Spot on. The sapphires I play with have zero clarity. They're fairly large stones but only worth $5-10 each.
Found the blue player 😆
Hi Dan! We went to church and high school together. I just found your channel after being curious about places to find gemstones and unique minerals in BC. I look forward to watching your back catalog and future videos!
These videos are the schist! Another gem from Dan.
All I can say is BC is just as beautiful there as your other claims, and you even found some gorgeous eye candy at this sight. Looks like some great episodes coming at this claim.
Omgosh, so beautiful. You and your friends are blessed. May you always find what you are looking for. ❤️🙏💐
Yay! Always love the gemstone episodes
Super excited for you, Dan!
Hello how are you doing?
This would make History ! These are only found a few places in the world. Way to Go, Good Job 👍
Congratulations on your new claim Dan! Excited to see more!
Looks absolutely fantastic Dan
I'm glad I still have my grandfather's Air Force ring, it's 2 ounces of solid gold with a big fat marble sized blue star sapphire on top.
Dan those are some pretty gems. Can’t wait to see what you can get off your claim
Love the colored stones.
Your videos are completely enjoyable to watch. Very informative and interesting. Good job Dan.
Everytime you are pounding Chisels in ....That Sound of crystal.... man I love it
Your gemstone/ocean picture vids are my fav! Can't wait to see what you get from your claim :)
Congratulations Dan
"ITS NOT THE HAMMER. IT'S THE SWINGER."
Just messing with ya my friend
I love your videos. I've learned alot watching them and I undoubtedly WILL continue to. (You know, GOD WILLING.)
I know you call these videos, but I see them as TUTORIALS. Keep em coming my FRIEND.
Can't wait to see whats to come Dan... cheers!
Wow I'm excited for you! cant wait to see what you discover this summer!!!
Oh wow. How exciting. Great upload Dan as always 🙌👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Those twisted and bent rock layers remind me of the Vishnu schist at the bottom of the Grand Canyon. Crazy cool patterns!
I am so excited for you!
What an awesome claim to own and explore! I can't imagine anything more exciting than finding gems like those.
Old is Gold and Gold is Gold
I love coming along and learning been rock crazy since childhood thank you for
Excited for a new adventure!
Fun! If you like sapphires, tourmaline, garnets, rubies, and emeralds, you need to try North Carolina in the States. We go there all the time. Tons of material. So much so that they include it in the road side sluice buckets. Some places let you go in the mines. While you're down here next winter, do northern Georgia. First place gold was mined in the US. They actually had a US mint in Dahlonega.
Thanks, Dan.
Another great vid Dan. Gemstones have always held a particular excitement for me, even though I've been a gold hog for most of my career. If you can get below the frost-line you will find a lot more gemmy crystals.
I truly enjoyed this clip and I'm excited for you and your family mining your new claim...
Good morning Dan, great video probably one of your best on gemstones. Thank you very much.
Will be interesting to see they look fantastic
Thoroughly enjoyed that can’t wait for the spring episode 🕊
Great video Dan, thank you. It looks like you are in for a great Summer exploring your new claim. Cannot wait to see what you uncover. Take care and stay healthy. Graham 👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧
Love the kaleidoscope of garnet split second shot!
"my Sample! - Now you have three!" I like this guy xD!
I learn a lot when you do these types of vids. Thank you.
Thanks for the video. Its very helpful in showing what to look for and identifying deposits of these things. Some of those specimens look sweet!
Those corundum crystals show strong parting planes that can mess up your cabs. (I have cut a fair number of star sapphires and faceted ones, too.) A good polish is possible on a sapphire cab with 8,000 grit (or finer) diamond powder in oil on a wood end grain lap for the final polish. Good luck!
Wow great bunch of people thanks for sharing.
Ok, that's it. Expect me at your door soon! Of all the stones I love, star sapphire is way up there on the list!
I wish there was an extra like button for this video! I had no idea Sapphires were in the Kootenays!! Great video as always Dan, love watching these.
Dan please keep up those awesome zoom edits. It was flawless and I was amazed
Sapphires are awesome! I go find them all the time. I live in a great place for them. The ones you got look more like just basic corundum though. Not quite gem quality. Still useful in industry use. There are two of those mines close by. Seven that produce gem quality. The garnets are so cool as well. Thanks for sharing. (I couldn’t really see the sapphire well, I’m using a small phone 🤣) that definitely looks like a fun place.
Dan, That BEARD Just Keeps PRODUCING Gems & AU, Sure Beats The "Crickets" My Used To Catch & Left-Overs That Are Being Saved For Later! LOL! Keep It ALL Forming & Presenting It! From Apple-Country Upstate NY On Lake Ontario! USA
Found you from a fans comment on Blacktail Studio channel. Glad I read comments. Love your channel so far.
Love colored stones, enviously jealous. 😊
Hi Dan, I want to congratulate you for your work and I want to tell you how much you're inspiring me. I worked as a tree planter in BC in the 90`s and after watching your channel, all I can think of is this place where I saw some gems in 1996. I never investigated it further at the time and it was always a regret. Now, I`m planning to make the trip back to BC next spring and I will have have some samples tested by a geo test company and I will very likely stake some claims. If not there, I will at some other locations. I`ve enrolled myself into an Art Lapidary school and I`m already buying the tools needed. You live a good life and I`m grateful that you're sharing your work expertise and life style on UA-cam.
I was hoping for a video with sapphires awhile back. Me and my dad went to a sapphire place in Montana and it was the most fun. Always had a blast looking for them. Can’t wait for the next vid!
Great video, Dan :) Thoroughly enjoyed it!
i love sapphires, cant wait to see what you pull from here.
Sometimes I have really good dreams where I 'm living Dan's life having tons of gem and gold claims in such beautiful areas lol
Wow, that is so amazing!! Almost makes me want to move out there. You find so much awesome stuff in your area. Looking forward to videos on your new claim.
So awesome!!!
Garnet is my birthstone! I love it!! I am so excited for this video!
Good luck on the new claim!
Looking forward to tuning into future videos...
Great video, so impressed with how many gems you found, beautiful surrounding to work in too.
Beauty!
Had the whole crew with ya. Good luck on the new claim
Amazing video Dan!! Keep up the incredible work, you have truly earned your subscriptions.
This is the best thing in the world, I love Star Sapphire/Ruby
Love the gemstone videos!!!!!!
Sapphire is truly a beautiful gem
Sapphires are my favourite!
That was pretty sweet I can't wait to see what you get from that claim
Love your gem videos. The gold ones are great too.
Gemstones are the best absolutely beautiful
Wow Dan, rock hounding seems like a blast. One of these days, I'd love to come up to Canada and hunt rocks with you, especially on that beautiful river.
As a newish subscriber I'm super excited to watch the journey of this new claim!
You can really increase your finds of placer sapphires by running a long sluice with aggressive riffles. As mentioned, sapphires are heavy and will settle in with any garnets, aquas, and gold in the area.
Excellent.
Keep Pushin!
Beautiful claim
I envy you Dan. I always wanted to go gem hunting but old age and health stopped that. Now I live vicariously through your show. Such amazing finds.
Thanks again for great video! Mr Dan Hurd I love gemstone 💎 I collect them in Colorado!
I LOVE pretty Rocks!!
