  • The legendary interview from the man, the myth, the legend. Mitch Hedberg was just a different type of comedian, no one even comes close to him. I mean when was the last time you heard: "that guy is the next Mitch Hedberg". Never! Because there will never be another Mitch.

I thought this interview was better than most of the others he did. He explained his drive, how he listened to his own advice.
When you tell others what others want to hear, they're never going to hear you. All 1 million of them. But when you tell others what you want to say, they will only hear what you have to say. And wether its one or 1 million, you know your audience is as original as you are. And that is priceless.

Yeah, I mean, he said in this interview he's talked to Rickles. Yet, he laughed at Mitch, just shooting the shit. Goes to show how funny Hedberg was. And props to this guy, doing his thing, he just was like, "I don't care how famous anyone is, I want to talk to people that make me laugh." Where other Comedians tell long stories and build up suspense while dispensing wisdom; Mitch Hedberg got on stage every night and told jokes. When you adjust his success for that hell of a handicap, there's no one even in the same ball park as Mitch Hedberg.

“Success is getting up when you want and not having to tuck your shirt in.” This is incredibly accurate and very deep. The guy who comes in on Tuesday in a t shirt and shorts already has 2.”

Mitch is one of the greats. If I remember correctly, he was cooking at a place called Haggerty's in Boca Raton, FL. They started doing comedy nights and Mitch did his first open mic there. A few days later or maybe a week later he drove 45 minutes north to the Comedy Corner in West Palm Beach. I"m pretty sure I saw Mitch his second time ever on stage. He did a bunch of spots at the Tuesday night Comedy Corner open mic night over the next few months and then he disappeared. A few years later I started hearing other comics quoting his lines and they were incredible. Then I saw him on Letterman and I couldn't believe how great he had become. He cracked the code and figured it out. Mitch is one of the all time comedy originals.

nice work, Barry. this has to be one of the best TV show interviews of a comic in existence. Barry caught & maintained Mitch’s attention & respect, because he was listening, processing and tossing it back & forth…not just knocking out a list of generic questions to fill time. it was a conversation between 2 strangers that seem to have parted as pals.
I’ve been protective of Mitch (like many of you here) since the 1st set I saw/heard him do, up to present day; seeing a host honestly enjoy their time with Mitchell is refreshing; it was sincere.

I happened across Jim’s grave during my little vacation to Paris two decades ago. The sad state of his grave really showed just little respect hoodlums have for the dead. One would be absolutely amazed that it was the grave of a fallen rockstar. It looked nothing like it does on the wiki...
It looked like someone had swept up the floor of some po-dunk bar, and dumped some that on his grave - cigarette butts and empty packs, broken empty alcohol bottles, etc.. The cement rectangular frame was hugely cracked apart, the dirt was all dried out like desert ground, and there was sparse dead weeds on top. Very sad.

I used to listen to Bob and Tom out of Indy.Mitch would call in once in a while. Then i discovered his great different humor. And when i had a chance to go see him live......i couldn't get off work. Then Bob and Tom one morning on my way to work said.....Mitch had passed because of drugs.......I was very sad and angry. And i blame his wife for not helping him better. RIP Mitch Lee Hedberg. Now he lays next to his mom Mary for eternity up in St. Paul ,Minn.

The biggest tragedy is that we don't have footage of these two on the commercial breaks. Solid chemistry up'ere
16:53 this guy is a morning news anchor conducting an interview for an afternoon segment. That tip of the day was not entirely scripted, but rather written at the last minute based on his overall interaction with the guest. If you factor in how much more time they spent off camera, you can't deny they had some sort of genuine conversation that made him change his tune in time for tuning in to the last part of the show.

  • @philfox452

Best comedy advice in the interview: 5:38-5:57
"In order to make it in stand-up comedy you can't already have a good job. That's the biggest downfall. You have to have a job that's worse, that'll keep you wanting to do it."
The hardest part about chasing a comedy career is exactly this. Living the "struggling artist" lifestyle to keep yourself hungry, metaphorically and physically. Once you decide to go for the comfortable job, whether you realize it or not, you've all but given up on the dream.

    • @lytch458
      @lytch458 2 роки тому +2

      Yup.
If you’re already overly ‘comfortable’…or have achieved financial success at a job, it’s VERY difficult to pursue stand up comedy.
It’s takes YEARS to start making a mediocre income.
When Mitch started, he never thought of money. It was always about the jokes, getting stage time…and not having to get a ‘job’. He was 100% focused on ‘mastering’ standup.
He was very lucky that he had a great girlfriend in the early years. Jana offered some security; she helped pay the rent, helped him get gigs and kept him grounded.
If you’re at a job that pays 100K/year…it’s almost impossible to go from that to crashing on friend’s couches and driving 5 hours to do free, 5 minute spots.
      Mitch was a master.
