  • There arguably isn’t a comedian that captured the MTV generation or has ever mastered one-liner jokes quite like Mitch Hedberg. His deadpan and absurd humor made him one of the most popular stand-up comedians of his generation.
Hedberg sadly passed away from a drug overdose in 2005. He was found dead in his hotel room in Livingston, N.J. Hedberg was tipped to be the next big comedian and signed a deal with Fox for a television sitcom.
Even though his fans never got to see him star in his own show, Hedberg has continually gained a cult following even years after his untimely death. Here is the untold truth about comedian Mitch Hedberg.

@@tylerandleahcanadian3888 did you miss the vote? At your suggestion, we decided that his style of comedy should be unique to him alone and “you’re being very Mitch hedbergie” is the correct and only way to describe the genius thoughts that mitchs brain blessed us with. Anyone can have an observational, dry wit utilizing deadpan humor, but there is only one hedberg and it’s blasphemy to use preexisting categories when trying to explain to others what style of comedy he utilized. “You’re being very Mitch hedbergie” transcends genres and categories. It is one of the top honors that can be bestowed upon a fellow comedian as well as forcing anyone who hasn’t heard his flawless acts to look him up and learn. Plus then we get to use “very Mitch hedbergie” in everyday conversations which makes me laugh. All in favor? Sustained. It only needs three yays. Overruled. Tyler, Leah and I are in agreement. I’ve been led to believe all Canadians as well? But I await confirmation from rocky and bullwinkle

whenever i introduce people to his comedy, its always the same pattern; they sit there and smile wondering what the hell is going on for the first few jokes, halfway in they start get it and find the humor in his delivery and quirkiness, by the end theyre rolling and ask to watch the first few again now that they get what hes doing. he was like one of those movies that makes absolutely no sense at first but once you watch it enough times, its genius.

I never understood why he needed to be “gotten”. His delivery was amazing for the jokes that he was telling. I think that it was the lack of him ever really narrating a story or point of view of any kind that might have turned some people off at first. His jokes were good, and his delivery was fantastic but his style was a bit unconventional...which certainly isn’t a bad thing.
It’s a shame that he’s dead. I remember sitting around in my basement/living room/whatever you’d call it with corn dogs, magazines and books I’d read countless times already, and having him to laugh at during the night alone. And this old gas heater that I’d light with matches. Mitch Hedburg and Dave Chapelle were the last two comedians that I’d truly gotten into.

Years ago when i was a college student in a smaller city in Minnesota i went to a comedy show at a local bar on a Sunday night. Here walks in this comedian on to the stage lookin like he's higher than a kite with his hair covering his face and wearing sunglasses looking down the whole time and I'm thinking to myself WTF haha. 5 minutes into the show, with one witty one-liner after another and a chuckle to follow, he has the whole audience tearing up with laughter. I mean his demeanor and delivery is what worked so perfectly, then maybe a month later i saw him on the Letterman show and I remember thinking holy shit i JUST saw him! He went from doing a show in front of an audience of 80-100 people to an audience of millions, crazy! Long story short i consider myself so very fortunate to see a Mitch Hedberg show live. Mitch has been my favorite comedian ever since the first time I didn't get one his jokes.
He transcended the bounds of normal comedy. They say that someone is always the brunt of a joke, and that we only laugh at things because they are too painful to cry about. But Mitch proved for all the world that it doesn't have to be that way.

A buddy turned me onto him back in like '01 He told me to listen to his set twice . . I get that. The first time he was just so unique and not the usual rapid fire bits from other very popular comedians at the time. I wasn't really super into him. But I took his advice. The more I heard him the more I liked him.
He simply grows on you, and sometimes you even 'get' the jokes a bit more when you hear them again.
    Cool guy, unique and creative.

Comparing Mitch to Seinfeld is an insult to Mitch!!!

Annd, pretty generous to Jerry. Although, the narrator clearly says something like: although he never achieved the same type of success as Seinfeld, he didn't need to. Because he was Mitch Hedberg.

I never really thought of him as a Seinfeld. I always said he was the new Stephen Wright

Mitch Hedberg is funnier than Seinfeld by many orders of magnitude.

Jerry is a sit com story telling comic.
Mitch was a comic genius, being able to make you think and once he says something you think how’d I not notice that. It was like he saw the world in a parallel dimension.

Mitch had the clear comedic insight of Stephen Wright, the innocent charm of Emo Philips, and the charisma of Jim Morrison. Thanks to him I can never go to a Subway franchise without smiling.

I seen Mitch live on Comedy Central in 2003-2004. He was one of a kind. It takes a lot to make me laugh. Mitch had that gift. He could use the lamest jokes and leave to a standing ovation. He was impossible to hate. Comedians are the true untold heroes. They are the ones that make us laugh in times of crisis. I can say from experience, the early- mid 00s were rough and Mitch is an inspiration that we will never forget and the joy he brought into this world. Rip 🙏 Mitch
