The original by Vicky Lawrence was done in 72. Reba did her cover in 91. She is such an amazing storyteller. You guys have to do Reba's video for Fancy next. There is a little bit of talking before the video - but then it's just Reba singing. She doesn't talk over it. It's one of her absolute best. Cheers from Canada! :)
Interestingly, this song was first released in 1973 by actress Vicki Lawrence. At the time of release it went to number one on the POP charts. This is a classic song now, but at the time the song was offered to Cher and other singers all of whom turned it down because it was too dark. The song writer was frustrated enough to almost give up, but then offered it to his wife--Vicki--who, as mentioned, took it to number one. Cher then got her nerve up to record her own 'dark' number one hit 'Dark Lady'.
The song was written by Vicki Lawrence husband (at the time) and was pitched to Cher who turned it down because she thought people in the South would think she was insulting them. Nobody else wanted the song and was given to Vicki Lawrence after her husband told the record company that it was a #1 song and it went on to prove him correct.
Sometimes… SOMETIMES… a video can distract from and even detract from a song. This has always been one of those unfortunate times to me. Reba’s’Fancy’, however, is a great story song for which I HIGHLY encourage y’all to watch the Official Video!!! Always enjoyable, guys; thanks!! Stay safe & love much💖
This video was made almost 20 years after the original release and a few covers since. So, for those who had heard the song before the video is great. But, first timers should always listen to the clean version first.
Bobby Russell wrote it and his wife at that time recorded it in 1972. That was Vickie Lawrence , she used to play Momma on the Carol Burnett Show. Then Reba McEntire covered it in 1991.
I love the line "little sister don't miss when she aims her gun'. She dumped that ho-ho's body in the swamp for the gators. :-) Reba really is the best at storytelling songs. She Thinks His Name Was John is a great song, pretty intense, but there is no official video for it. Both recordings I have seen have been live. Love watching you guys. Your reactions are genuine. Apologizes to Dustin, but the entire, "If Dustin dies, I'm totally pivoting the camera and you get to watch him turn blue..." had laughing.
Kathy here - always love your reactions and your interactions with each other. Reba is the GOAT! A couple of other great songs, check out Why haven't I heard from you, and Take it back. Both are from her early days, but I loved singing them when I was with a band, for 15 years! She was my "go to" for an encore.
Video came out in 92. She re-released the song in I believe mid spring late summer of 91. She always releases the song several months before the video while others release both at the same time. My favorite line, "little sister don't when she aims her gun". Yep, there's a reason. Dustin, sip some milk. Coat that throat before ya die! 🤣🤣🤣🤣I'm totally effed up cause watchin' live death today is 😁 I almost spit RC all over my phone!
@@BourbonCountryReacts Don't. It was hilarious. Y'all were great yesterday. Between the safe space and bourbon death, I went to bed giggling. That bottle must be well aged. I remember some folks were confused on the song. It would take them a few times listening to “get the picture” 🤦🏼♀️ so I always assumed that when it was time for the video they had her explaining it throughout. Back then we heard the song first. So truthfully that’s how I wished you had done it. If we had know what song was coming I think a lot of us would’ve suggested to listen to the audio THEN the video. It’s a great story telling song anyway. It was always a good backroads song with all us girls. “Fancy” was our #1 Reba backroads track. 🤘🏼🤓❤️🇺🇸
I always thought this video detracted from the song. It felt like Reba putting out an audition reel on the record company's dime. And I adore Reba & this song in particular.
I would recommend you watch the music video without the mini movie then watch the official video with the mini movie. Watch them back to back on the channel. That way we will get you true reaction to the song and the video separately.
Reba loves those videos done for dramatic effect. This video was ruined by running the dialogue simultaneous to the song vocals. It was the early 90s, so I think she did videos like this to show her acting chops as she was trying to expand her resume with acting credits. She's done plenty of movies and tv shows since. The song, however, was a remake of a song from about 20 years earlier that was done by actress/comedienne Vicki Lawrence. Both versions are really good.
There was a movie in the early 80s with Kristy McNichol in the lead (Reba's part in the video). Same title "The Night the Lights went out in Georgia ".

Please react to the video version (I promise they won't talk through it!) of Does She Love You before you finish Carrie's video story - ? That "Action." was perfectly fitting. This video is like a mini movie. I still think this song deserves a full-length movie made out of it. They did make a movie in the 80's or 90's with the same title, but it has nothing to do with the song. Dustin, scrape your lung off the camera before the next video.
@@BourbonCountryReacts it definitely distracts and on few occasions get it perfect and both work well together. I think sometime a video influences the story too much.
Reba is great a story teller, but her videos take it to a whole other level. You should check out her song “Fancy” also. The Fancy video is like a mini movie but they don’t talk over her while she’s singing…just before and after she sings. The video just helps tie it all together. However, on this video, I have to agree with you. If you’ve never heard the song this video does make it a little difficult to hear the lyrics.
Okay, so for anyone that didn’t grasp the full story. Ramond is the narrator’s brother. His best friend Andy, is her fiancee. Andy was sleeping with Ramond’s wife behind both of their backs. The narrator killed both Ramond’s wife and Andy. Ramond found out after going to Andy’s house in plans to kill him, and took the fall for her. The judge was also sleeping with Ramond’s wife, so he wouldn’t listen to the truth from the narrator, and they ultimately gave Ramond the death penalty. She kept the secret for years until she finally told the man in the beginning (either a reporter, journalist, or a detective) the truth.
I prefer the original by Vicki Lawrence. Her husband at that time wrote it and couldn't get anyone interested, so he had his wife record it. It was a real hit.
If you really want to combine a couple of great singers may I suggest Brooks and Dunn featuring Reba McEntire cowgirls Don't cry which is actually a semi biographical look at Reba's childhood. I would also check out Reba McEntire Fancy where she pretty much doesn't talk over the video the way she did in this one. But also remember this song came out in 19 it was written it by Bobby Russell in 1971 and has been recorded by a lot of people good reaction guys have a great day.
The brother confessed though, so at the point when she went to tell the truth he was convicted and they probably thought she was attempting to get him out of trouble. At the court level it was just convenient easy case for the judge that day. I will also point out that in the video she supposedly slept with the judge, but not the song, so it's not necessarily as corrupt a situation with just lyrics. even though the entire situation is awful
It couldn't realistically happen any where as the Judge doesn't control "defense, trial, sentence". Their would have had to been a completely corrupt Jury, D.A., complete Courthouse full of people. So there ya go. They actually made a movie off this song and Mark Hamil, Luke Skywalker himself played the sheriff. It was kind of strange. Huey Lewis was the guy in the last video. Reba's newer video's don't have the quite the cinematic style anymore, they generally focus more on her singing. But her live performances are great to react to and pretty easy to find. Keith go give Dustin CPR for christsake!!!! lol
Ewwww, no! I'm not givin' him CPR. As for that corruption thing, I've actually seen cases where the corruption truly did permeate the whole courthouse. I won't say where, because it really doesn't matter, but a judge, prosecutor, and defense attorney were all convicted for it in that particular case. Crazy stuff.
@@ThatJunkman Actually yep its in the 4th vs? and repeats in the chorus each time. Dustin better get that cough checked out! BTW he said at one point that something would be "less unlikely" when I'm pretty sure that he meant less likely. Also in the song Reba should have sung that they hanged an innocent man rather than they "hung" an innocent man in order to be using it correctly. But then, who really cares? That's the way it was written.
I'm so glad you guys disliked the music vid, I enjoy the song but the vid takes so much away. Not all her vids are like that but I would think most of her earlier music vids fallow that pattern."If you see him, if you see her" is a lovely one of hers it features Brooks and Dunn and the vid is good. "One promise to late" is enjoyable, not sure if that one has a music vid to it. . When friends keel over, poke them with a stick.
Hysterical watching Dustin inhale Bourbon, as Keith laughs at him. Y’all so funny! That’s what friends do! I guess I am f’d up! 😂😂😂 I can’t stop laughing! I don’t like this song! It’s weird, to me.

It was actually kinda in the middle. But, Dustin's on/off camera attempt at dying kind of distracted me from describing it very well. - Keith
Think there was something in the air -Dustin
Dustin better get that cough checked out! BTW he said at one point that something would be "less unlikely" when I'm pretty sure that he meant less likely. Also in the song Reba should have sung that they hanged an innocent man rather than they "hung" an innocent man in order to be using it correctly. But then, who really cares? That's the way it was written.
1991, guys.
Yeah, I wouldn't know then. I have a huge pop-culture hole between 1985-1992 where I really didn't have access to TV, and not much radio. - Keith
😂
I'm so glad you guys disliked the music vid, I enjoy the song but the vid takes so much away. Not all her vids are like that but I would think most of her earlier music vids fallow that pattern."If you see him, if you see her" is a lovely one of hers it features Brooks and Dunn and the vid is good. "One promise to late" is enjoyable, not sure if that one has a music vid to it. .
When friends keel over, poke them with a stick.
Added votes for those.
Hysterical watching Dustin inhale Bourbon, as Keith laughs at him. Y’all so funny! That’s what friends do! I guess I am f’d up! 😂😂😂 I can’t stop laughing! I don’t like this song! It’s weird, to me.

Thanks!
Original early 70s Reba remake. Story legend from 1920s.
I ain't touching that Bourbon...lol
lol, it's not bad. And, it probably didn't kill Dustin. - Keith
Probably.... -Dustin
The video ran over the song. Too much talking.
We agree. - Keith
Those are by far the two worst videos of hers for the “pull you out thing” IMO. If y’all ever do a live reaction for this song I think y’all would enjoy this one ua-cam.com/video/wgq8MZBEIf0/v-deo.html. Great Reaction as always guys but I got scared there for a second. Thought ya both were about to choke to death. 🤭
Go hope you were joking about that it happening in the world today. Do you know how many DA's just care about advancing their careers and would railroad anyone to do it.
Am well aware. Particularly at the federal level. - Keith
Man the, like, two separate videos in this one music video was really bad.
