The fact that you noted that the original was by Exile was expected; the fact that you also noted that the Bus Boys (of "48 Hours" fame) also covered the song was a surprise. Props for your research. One would think there'd be more covers of this song than there are, but alas....
Written by the famed team of Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn. Dave
What are you talking about? It was Huey that brought up the fact that the BusBoys covered the song, not Professor. And what would be surprising about it if Professor had been the one to mention it? It would not be surprising at all. What would be surprising would be if a video about a particular hit song did not mention the previous versions of that song. And it hardly takes much "research" to find that info. It is mentioned in the first paragraph of the song's page on Wikipedia. Why has Professor pinned such a dumb comment, and why have 30 people upvoted it?
@@dfordiligence2398 My original comment is likely approaching 2 years old for one. The BusBoys' cover wasn't officially added to SHS until ~1 year prior to the vid's posting is another. "You" in this context refers to anyone in the vid offering info on a work or particular recording. Last, Wiki can be unreliable at times, and my then understanding of the work's history was independent of Wiki. That page should read "recorded and released...", as "recorded" could refer to an unreleased outtake or an outtake recording officially released on some comp years later.
Why post such "dumb" hostility?
@@tarheel7406 What an absurd reply. You were clearly addressing Professor and not Huey, as you said "Props for your research." Huey did not find out about the BusBoys version by doing research. He found out about it by hearing it being recorded in the studio. You were clearly implying that Professor was the one that mentioned the BusBoys, not Huey.
I don't understand anything else you have said. If you have a point to make, then please make it clearly. What on earth is SHS? And what on earth has the age of your comment got to do with anything? When you say "Wiki", are you referring to Wikipedia? And what on earth have these statements you are making about "Wiki" got to do with anything I have said to you? Please make sense.
@@dfordiligence2398 It's a freakin' holistic comment on a YT vid. Do you know what the Prof knew before the interview? The interview is part of the research. I'd also guess that my expectations of the Prof wasn't as set then as it is now.
SHS is SecondHandSongs, a site that catalogs covers and for which I contribute. A much better source than Wiki for who and when artists record and officially release covers and who/when recorded/released the original. Terms of art are needed when getting into those weeds, and I let those terms slip into other forums. Went back and looked, and The BusBoys weren't even officially on SHS when the cover's existence was noticed to the editors of the site.
What is "dumb" is not knowing the difference between stupidity and ignorance. Not relying on Wiki for this type of matter, I was admittedly ignorant of what that page has and had to say on this work/song, but I was clearly educated to some degree notwithstanding due to other sources and efforts. You appear ignorant of the existence of SHS, reasonably so I suppose.
This group brings up many happy memories growing up as a kid in the 80's.
Top 5:
1. Heart and Soul
2. I Want a New Drug
3. The Heart of Rock & Roll
4. Walking on a Thin Line
5. The Power of Love
Want to hear the feud between no. 2 and Ghosts Buster.
I played the hell out of his greatest hits CD til it got too scratched 😕
I've listened to Huey's Heart and Soul over 20000 times, over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and
Huey is the man! And he's genuinely humble. I saw in an interview where he said "We were NOT the best band in America, but we struck a chord that people liked. "
Huey Lewis music always makes me happy.
GOD DAMN I LOVE THIS F'N SONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I still play this song at least once a week.
And I play it LOUD.
The production on the Huey version was spot on. I love the two guitar parts and the prominence of the auxiliary percussion.
Song of the day announced at 710 am was "Do You Believe in Love". Just happened to go home for lunch. Turned on the radio, it played, I was 10th caller and won $1000. Obviously have an affinity for that song! Love - Back in Time, Walking on a Thin Line, Working for a living, and Power of Love, with kudos to Back the Future using it.
Great song. I hope Huey is healthy these days.
@Billy Westerband Huey is healthy and a very nice person. And a cutie pie. He's my sweetheart.
Did you like my reply?
Today is Huey's birthday. I looking for the movie nerd. That's the name he uses. He sent me a few messages a month ago too.
Hi Huey lewy, This is a nice nic-name for Huey.
Haven't heard from Huey for a long while. Hey movie nerd, send me a message. Where are you? From Linda.
New hero... Professor of Rock. You talked to Huey? You where right there! Are you kidding me!? Love it!
Huey is so under appreciated these days.. Sports was all, it seemed like, that was played that year.
HLN were the first band I saw live. Tacoma Dome in ‘85, their largest indoor crowd to date. I was 14. One of the cool neighbor moms took a bunch of us to the show, bless her. I saw them a few more times over the years- always fantastic live. They had Tower of Power horns with them at most of the shows... simply incredible. I gotta give credit to Huey for putting on some killer and unexpected opening acts on the bill. I missed seeing them with SRV but saw comedian Dr. Gonzo, Lonnie Mack & Koko Taylor open for them. The man has excellent taste in music.
When I lived in San Francisco years later I made it a point to visit the 2 AM Club- which is where they shot the album cover for “Sports” whenever I could. It was quite a treat to play pool on that very same table seen on the cover while “I Want a New Drug” played on the jukebox. Full-size table by the way- very nice. They had a great bartender, an older lady named Liz. “It’s short for lizard” she informed me. Good times.
Final note: a few years ago I was outside the back of Jimmy Kimmel Live with some friends and we were all talking about Back to the Future when who pops out the back door but Huey. He was cool & friendly, posing for pics with everyone despite his tour manager Lol Halsey (you may remember him from the “Stuck With You” video as “Reginald Bixby”) trying to hurry him along (hey, that’s his job). It was clear Huey was not going to deny the fans though and Lol actually ended up taking some of the photos.
Thanks Huey, all the former and current Newsfolk and Professor of Rock. Great stuff.
Huey! We love you and The News!! Always!
Huey is awesome. Definitely one of the giants of the 80's.
He sure is. He's a cutie pie. He's my sweetheart.
This was my favorite song of their's back then. It was weird because i heard people on tv later take shots at the News. I was like "but these guys are amazing".
My favourite Huey Lewis song...was a huge party song when it first came out...always heard it everywhere, even my mama loved it...lol...was a big school dance favourite in junior high, Huey and the guys were pretty much part of the junior high soundtrack from 1983-1986...😁🤟🏿🎵🎶
Bro ……. Heart and soul is like a shot of magic directly into your soul. That chorus. Jesus almighty , masterpiece.
Huey Lewis and the News was my very first concert when I was 15 in 1983 in South Florida. I think the tickets cost $15. We snuck a camera in and took awesome pictures because we also squeezed in to the second row after flirting with some guys. So much fun! A concert I will never forget. Thanks Huey. We love you!!!
I had no idea this was a remake! It's still my fav song by Huey Lewis and the News...so awesome to hear them sing it in concert (twice).
This song is up there as one my favorites in the 80’s . Man it goes off 👏👏👏
Oh, Sweet! Such a damn good song. My Huey 5-er...
5. Walking On A Thin Line
4. Bad Is Bad
3. Power Of Love
2. Heart And Soul
1. Do You Believe In Love
You nailed this interview... You did your homework and you could tell that Huey appreciated that you came in prepared. BRAVO!!!
I had no idea Exile recorded "Heart and Soul" first, nor did I know Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn wrote it!
They owned the late 80s and first part of the 90s. Awesome sound and awesome times.
I really like Huey and the News. That video was fun , love the party. The girl he met . OMG she was soooo cute. Loved her look
Huey. LEWIS...
WONDERFULL. Band. Of. The. 8O'S....
I. LOVE. , LOVE
"HEART. AND. SOULD "..💯♥️🌟
My Favorite Huey Lewis song It will pick you up after a bad day
Huey...truly one of greats. A gentleman. As for Sports...GIGANTIC!!!
I had no idea that “Heart And Soul” was a cover. Love Huey and look forward to more clips with him.
My top 5 Huey Lewis And The News songs...
1) Do You Believe In Love
2) Walking On A Thin Line
3) If This Is It
4) The Power Of Love
5) Stuck With You
I first saw the band on Huey's birthday on July 5, 1984 at Pine Knob. Great night!
The way Huey delivers that line in the first verse "I wouldn't dream of turnin' her away" is the best line he ever sang! Just sets the tone of the rest of the song/album!!!
Actually my forgotten 80's hit. Thanks for reminding bro... this realy make my day.
Sports was and is one of my top five of all time. Huey was my soundtrack of my teen years. Love it. My dad Loves him too
Sports was just hit after hit after hit, it's a perfect record
No lie there...👌🏿😎
Huey is one of the all time greats
My first crush ever in my life really loved this song. Here's to you Ruben. R.I.P.
SPORTS IS A POP ROCK MASTERPIECE!! 🏈⚾️🏀⚽️🎸🎹
How do you manage to interview all these musicians? Totally worth watching.
Not sure why I see so many thumbs down on your channel you are bomb for breaking down the hits with the artist....
I love Huey Lewis and the news totally underrated. Heart and soul is my jam the Sports Album kept bringing the hits 😍🔥
Sports! The very first album I ever owned.
Rare to find albums like this where every track is great. Sports is one of those.
Back to the Future was a great 80s movie and it wouldn't have been as successful without Power of Love
Man. This crushed me. I had no idea this was a cover tune. I always thought it was a Huey Lewis And The News Original😢😢😢😢. Gonna have to go through the rest of their songs that I love to see which ones they also didn’t write. Dam 😢😢😢😢
Sports might be the greatest album ever
A legitimate rocker, my fav Huey tune!
I think that Talk Talk are due a feature.
Great band with great videos. Maybe not as well known as they should be.
My favorite Huey song!
Great interview! Wishing Huey the best as, like him, I am developing Meniere's and the effects on your hearing and balance can be brutal. Heart and Soul was just the song to balance out what the pop icons were putting out there at the time.
My favorite song by huey Lewis & the news!
My favorite song is, If this is it, by Huey.
My fav song of theirs . Still play it heaps 😊😊🎵
Exile unreal they were remembered for this song! Huey took it threw the roof and blew the lid off in the 80s ! Great job PROFESSOR 🕵️♀️ The power of Love 💗
Exile had a huge hit in 1978 with Kiss You All Over, wrote several smash country hits, and had a string of country hits themselves in the 80s. They are remembered for a lot more than Heart and Soul.
Just when think you know everything about music, professor of rock shows us heart and soul was a cover song. Wow!
Huey Lewis has a new album out that is a killer. One of the best albums I have heard in a few years other than maybe Dennis DeYoung new album. I'm sure you know about it it's called Weather and the video Her love is killing me is so great. It deserves best video award . I've got a huge smile on my face right now thinking of it. 1st track While We're Young excellent. This interview really great cuz he's one of the greats his whole band.
I think this is my favorite Huey Lewis and The News song.
I love some of his lesser known songs like Perfect World.
I think a great video would be you explaining how you got into music and how you get access to these guys.
As a kid, this was one of my first three album purchases ever, along with Thriller and Purple Rain
Saw that Sports Tour in 1984 in Beaumont, TX!!! Great live band!!! Dr. Gonzo, a comedian, opened the show.
My favorite Huey Lewis song...and top 5 of all time! It still gives me goosebumps!
Love huey lewis and the news. One of the best bands ever.
I grew up on the Huey Lewis & News version. I stumbled across the Bus Boys version circa 2000. I like both...Huey's version has the more legacy to it! I liked your Rick James biography also.👍🏾
Huey Lewis and the News 💙💙💙
I'll wait til you do the Huey Lewis and the news history to do my 5'er. I do like their motown remakes. " It's alright" and "Because it's alright". Huey knows his stuff, he's a music history buff.
I love Old Antone’s by Huey Lewis and the News such an underrated song
I saw Huey Lewis and The News at a small rock venue in Westport in KC in like, 1988? The Lone Star. So much fun!
My all-time favourite by Huey Lewis is 'STUCK WITH YOU'..immediately transports me back in the '80s...! Thanks Adam..also can you do a review for BRUCE HORNSBY...such a talented musician but quiet underrated..!
@@christosstamato527 Thanks for the info..!
The News were the backing band on My Aim Is True by Elvis Costello.
As the band Clover...he also played on a live Thin Lizzy album
Chris Stamato I know John McFee was later in the Doobie brothers
I don’t know who came up with the bridge with the handclaps but it’s brilliant.
Dude. I bet your freaking out that you get to interview such. TRUELY. GREATS.....
What's interesting is that Exile's version is over six minutes and includes an interlude part in the last 1/3 of the song. Huey and they boys didn't recorded it that way for Sports, but they started playing it that way around 2003, and that's the version on the Live at 25 album/DVD.
Also, I bought the Bus Boys' version in the 90s some time - it's ridiculous! But I don't want to knock them too much as they did "Cleanin' Up The Town" for Ghostbusters. Love that song.
For all these years of hearing that song. And finding a copy of it and reading the credits, finding out that's who wrote it. I cant believe I've never even knew about the others. And I've seen that Exile album all the time in dollar bins. But it's just kinda funny how I'm sure I've read that the last time I had that on record. And filed it away. And here we are maybe 20+ years later. Heres to 40 years in 2024.
Definitely my favourite Huey Lewis song. I had no idea Exile did the original, though. Great stuff!
As much as I love Sports I absolutely love Fore..... Amazing Album
One of my favorite 80s songs, and great video.
I'm such a great fan of Huey Lewis and the News. I love their music. Thank you Professor of Rock for this!
The UK Extended Dance Mix is the Business!!
That's wild about Huey and the Bus Boys BOTH cutting this tune in the same studio at the same time! As much as I like the BB version, Huey's is way better. Thanks for posting - great interview!
Favorite HL & News song. Thank you for this!
Mind Blown. Never knew that was a cover.
My first concert. I loved these guys. Thank you Huey for all the years of solid, well produced music. It's been a fun ride
Sports is a great album. Fantastic songs. The follow up Fore released in 86 is fantastic as well. Need a remastered version of that one.👍
This is one of my very favorite Huey songs. It is the soundtrack to a few boyhood crushes of mine :). The song oozes charm and youthful bliss.
I remember the album well. Heart & Soul was my favorite song by them....Professor, I love your channel.
They really came into their own
Love that song.
Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercial and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consimante professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far much more bitter, cynical sense of humour.
Nice.
MEDIAHOUND Hey Paul, it's consummate. AAAAARGH!!!
I had Sports as a kid in the 80's, wore it out because I loved it so much. Heart & Soul was & still is one of my favorite songs from all albums & artists. Heard & liked a lot of Exile's work my parents played, but Huey owned it with his version. Thank you for this interview with one of my GOAT musicians & backstory on "my" song💜🎸🎶🎹💜
The Bus Boys version rocked it pretty well!
Big HLN fan growing up! Such a solid band. Heart and Soul was definitely a fave from Sports. I love that they are active on Instagram. 😁❤️
Love this song and video
This is awesome! I literally spun the Sports LP yesterday.
Huey is such a cool cat! :D Look forward to seeing more.
And I spied that the Professor is wearing a T-Shirt with The 1975 on it. My interest in popular music has slowed to a crawl over the last decade however I have heard a dozen or so tracks by The 1975; there's a strong eighties vibe in much of their art that's worthy of a listen for those who enjoy music from that era. Would be interesting to see the Professor run a feature on them.
Takes me back to watching night tracks lol
I have to ask... What's the story behind the Cassette table that's in a lot of your interviews? I like it! Did you make it yourself?
I'm enjoying all your videos thank you so much for the way you put them together and your interviews are awesome. Keep it up!
I got to know Huey Lewis from American Pyshco soundtrack.
"its hip to be square"
" I prefer Genesis after Peter Gabriel left " ! 😆
Farhan Sadeed but when Sports came out in 83...
Man I love this song. This is a great channel. I wish it was played more than Heart of Rock N Roll, Power of Love, or I want A New Drug. Hope to see some love for .38 Special, The Cars, Cyndi Lauper, and the woman who had the 2nd video played on MTV, Pat Benatar.
Love your channel. Great stories and interesting guests. Thankyou!
THANK YOU SO MUCH !!
Professor, excellent interview as always. Very happy I found your channel.
