The Story 0f 80s Ballad "NEVER TEAR US APART" by INXS! | Professor Of Rock

- In the 80s an up and coming band was looking to create the best album of their time. They finished half the album and took a break to gain some perspective on what they’s just written. From that break came a massive hit that started as a fast song but when it was slowed down and played on a piano instead of a guitar it became one of the most heart wrenching rock ballads of the late 80s. Michael Hutchence and Andrew Farris and Andrew Ferriss wrote most of the band hits including Need You Tonight, New Sensation, Suicide Blonde, and What You Need but they took the 4th single from their legendary 1988 record Kick called Neve Tear Us Apart to a whole new level! Which has only grown in status since Michael Hutchence’ untimely death.. It was played at his funeral. In this exclusive interview. founding band member and songwriter Andrew Ferriss tells the story of this hit and of the album from 1988. How Michael Hutchence was once complimented by Ray Manzarek of the Doors said Michael was the closest thing he’d seen to Jim Morrison. and how Michael took the vocal from Never Tear us Apart from 0-10 in seconds and made it legendary. and how when Andrew had grown sick of the song, 80,000 sports fans singing it in unison changed him…

I’m excited to bring you another episode from our series Revelations- where featured artists reveal rare stories about their biggest songs, along with fascinating insight about their careers.
On this installment of Revelations, one of the 80s greatest songwriters gives us the real story behind an all time rock ballad. I was fortunate to have a great Zoom Session with INXS co-founder and co-writer Andrew Farriss. andrew is an amazingly talented multi-instrumentalist… Along with Michael Hutchence, Andrew co-wrote most of INXS’s biggest hits including NEED YOU TONIGHT, NEW SENSATION, WHAT YOU NEED, SUICIDE BLONDE AND TODAY’S FEATURE Never Tear Us Apart…
Andrew and Michael Hutchence had a unique chemistry and the 80s wouldn’t be the same without the indelible music of INXS. Early on, even before they had a hit, Ray Manzarek of the doors heard INXS play and told Andrew Farris that Michael Hutchence reminded him of Jim Morrison. And it’s true. Micheal Hutchence was undoubtedly Morrisonsesque, one of the greatest frontman in music history. Up next Andrew tells us the story of that chemistry and how iNXS created Kick the 1987 blockbuster including the fierce and heartwrenching 1988 rock balls Never Tear us Apart. Poll: What is your pick for the greatest rock ballad of the 80s?
"The Flame" - Cheap Trick
"Love Song" - Tesla
"Still Loving You" - Scorpions
"Love Bites" - Def Leppard
"Never Say Goodbye" - Bon Jovi
I didn't put any Journey songs here, because it's just not fair. Probably a solid 50% of their 80's output would qualify.
REVOLUTION by THE CULT..... Amazing ballad !!!! So powerfull and sweet at the same time - and it has the greatness of the 80´s. THE CULT is on tour right now...by the way.
How about Wanted Dead or Alive by Bon Jovi? 🤠
I'm the only one by Melissa |Etheridge
I hope I never/message to my girl by split enz
Or my favourite I don't believe anymore by another great aussie band, Icehouse
Hutchence was a natural star. Artists like him are very rare. Such an incredible loss.
Agreed...adore Michael Kelland Hutchence..Love that we share the exact birthday too!!
As a 52-year old Aussie I cannot put into words how much INXS were adored back in the 80s, how much we looked forward to new releases and how exciting their concerts were. To this day Michael's onstage charisma is unmatched. The Live Baby Live filming of them at Wembley comes close to capturing the vibe. I am loving how relevant the band is today. Thank you for featuring them and interviewing Andrew!!!
We loved them over here too! Adored!
I'm a 52yo Aussie too, and I fully agree, what an exciting buzz those years were. I saw the Kick tour in Adelaide (Calling All Nations), and was blown into orbit!
@Tasker Streete As a 61 year old American, I adore INXS... definitely one of the greatest bands from the 80s. I still love their music and am still pissed at Bob Geldof.
I had just turned 18 in 1988, managed to get INX concerts tickets at the Rod Laver Arena.. twenty years later I was in Melbourne for the Australian Open and realised the seats I had were the same ones! I recall looking up and watching paper floating down from the roof when they did Mediate, with the lyrics.
@@shawnc5188 that's pretty cool!
I work as a DJ here in Sydney Australia. I did the 50th birthday party of Jon Ferris (drummer) at his house. He insisted on showing me his home studio. Super nice guy. The other guys in the band were very chill, treated everyone like normal people. No rock star attitude.
That's way cool. We would love to have you come on the INXS podcast and chat about INXS with us 🎧
Jon Farriss is one of the most under-appreciated drummers of any era. He is brilliant. Also, he gets overshadowed by Michael, for good reason, but he may be the second most charismatic member of the group.
Their music could have been released in the 90's, 00's 10's and have been just as relevant - I think they are timeless.
Guns in the Sky.. I was so young when Kick debuted but it suprisiny very relevant.
My older brother was anti INIXS, I kept saying to him these guys are going to blow up. Watch you’ll see them go big. By the following few months after the album dropped he was caught by me singing along to Devil Inside. I just smiled and said see I told you.
Inxs definitely should’ve been inducted in rock n roll of fame or be one of the upcoming inductees. They’re one of the best bands and live performance.
They deserve more acclaim than they received. Michael was a perfect frontman Morrison and Jagger melded together. They had it all. Songs, riffs and that sax!!!
Just so many irresistible classics!
I love the 'saxamaphone' here (as Homer would say), also in What you need and Mediate. It's just magnificent.
Fun fact: Mediate video must have been inspired by the one for Charly Garcia's Yendo de la cama al living.
I, too, think he is way underrated. When you saw him live, he had sex appeal oozing off him, he had such charisma and presence. I've never felt that at any other concert.
Throw in Marc Bolan as well as Morrison and Jagger. Michael Hutchence was the ULTIMATE mix.
They've got a ton of fans. They were huge between generations. What do you mean?
For me, "Need You Tonight" for INXS was the equivalent to "When Doves Cry" for Prince.
A super stripped down, masterpiece of a song. Missing a lot of the usual instruments and layers, but still having all the identity and signature of the artist.
One of the best songs from the best 80s pop-rock band. All these years later, the loss of Michael Hutchence hits hard
Too young. Too young. RIP Michael. 😢
Very hard. THey'd be KILLING it right now.
Man, did Michael's death kill me! I remember seeing them in concert around this time. They were on tour with Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers. INXS will always be one of the greatest Rock bands, of all time. I play "Don't Change" all the time. Rip sweet Michael. You will never be forgotten. Thanks Professor! All my best 🙏♥️
I thought they were lying, when I heard the news.
@@redwingblackbird8306 OMG Red, So did I! I thought it was just another death hoax. I felt the same way, when they said Prince died. I seen a picture of his daughter Tiger Lilly and I got so emotional! She looks so much like her dad. Take care my friend. All my best 🙏♥️
Great interview. They had a lot of funk and soul and "Need you tonight" actually got significant airplay on Black radio. Great album and band as they leave the cookie cutters home.
"Don't Change" is my all time favorite INXS singles. It was the raw talent evident in that song that drew me in.
I love that song too!
Timeless tune, just perfection.
Mine too!
Agreed, my favorite INXS song as well.
The Stairs from the album X is my favourite INXS song, such a brilliant piece of music!
I consider this one of those pivotal songs of the era. Michael Hutchence was one of those distinctive voices that was instantly recognizable & you simply had no choice but to sing along with him.
I couldn't agree more. Thanks Bob.
He had such an amazing voice.
Yes, he had that thing all the great ones have.
Great idea to slow the song down and let it resonate with the listener!
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 The voice, the presence, an amazing frontman.
I saw INXS live in 1986. Absolutely the best show I have ever been to; they were one of those bands that were infinitely better live which is so rare today. True legends of music.
I saw INXS on the "Shabooh Shoobah" tour as an opening act for Adam Ant and immediately fell in love with them. Their energy was infectious and the music was a completely refreshing blend with the hard guitars, synths, and saxophone. The last time I saw them was on the 'Kick' Tour as a co-headliner with Guns and Roses of an all-day concert at the Dallas Cowboys Texas Stadium with the "hole" in the roof. It was late October and the day had been kind of miserable, cool with off and on rain all day. The field had been covered with a rubberized tarp to protect it but that combined with the body heat caused the humidity levels to rise to an almost unbearable state. The music though was great from the opening act, 'The Smithereens' when the stadium was maybe 1/3 capacity to Ziggy Marley and Iggy Pop closing out the "opening acts". Guns and Roses was actually the only disappointment of the day, playing only 3 songs with Axel Rose storming off stage in a tamtrum after the second only to return and do one more while kicking monitors off the stage and throwing mic stands and storming off once more. Ultimately leaving his stunned bandmates to sheepishly apologize and leave stage.
To their credit the INXS boys stepped right in, far earlier than they expected I am sure, and saved the day. Putting on an incredible performance which culminated in 'Never Tear Us Apart'. The part that sticks out to me is the stagecraft that they employed during it. At the drop the entire stage was plunged into blackness, before Kirk Pengilly "magically" appeared on a riser high above the drummer under a single spotlight for that iconic sax solo. Pure brilliance.
Damn that would have been an amazing show (with AA)! I was too young then (born in '74) but loved these bands on Mtv at the time! Adam and the Ants are so incredible live too!
INXS is in the running for most underrated band of all time. If Michael Hutchence hadn't passed away, I honestly think they would have become one of the most iconic bands in history. I'm talking up with the staples like Zepplin, the Beatles, the Stones, Floyd, etc.
You are not wrong on that assessment.
Agreed. They'd still be a hot ticket on tour.
INXS: Kick is such a timeless classic, it’s one of the only 80s albums that feels like an 80s album and not an 80s album at the same time.
I often forget when it came out and I graduated high school in ‘85. I loved that band in high school, but when Kick comes on, it just feels …later. I can’t explain it.
It’s just a fantastic work of art.
I saw them multiple times and they were always awesome. The last time was in Fort Worth, Texas at the Stock Yards in an actual livestock arena. Once again, an amazing show. Had the pleasure of meeting them in Los Angeles - I was good friends with Robbin Crosby of the band Ratt - and we were backstage after the show. All of the guys were super nice and didn’t have any attitude or ego. So nice to meet your music idols and have them be genuine and friendly. Fond memories.
Love INXS! Michael Hutchence had the most distinctive, incredible voice. He could sing anything from any genre and slay it. Gone too soon. 💜
RIP *Michael Hutchence!* Such a creative mind, gone WAY too soon.
I loved their music!
Same! An incredible. front man.
He was a true rockstar.
This was one of those bands that was omnipresent to our group of friends in high school. We loved about everything they did starting with The Swing. I get nostalgic any time I hear them. It was great to get some background from Andrew on their process. Rest in Peace Mr. Hutchence.
What I've always loved about INXS is, no matter how much they played around with different styles and songwriting approaches, never wanting to be pigeonholed into one genre or another, they never lost that sound that was distinctly their own -- no matter how stylistically-different given songs of theirs were from one another, at the end of the day, you knew that you were listening to an INXS song and no one else's!
Yep. Quality craftsmanship.
Have you heard Michaels solo stuff ? What are ur thoughts. I quite like that too.
Diverse track list as well.
@@symphonyinkart: I remember one or more tracks getting airplay from the one solo album that I recall him having out in the few years before news of his death broke.
Dear Professor,
Thank you, thank you for celebrating the uniqueness and talent of INXS!! They are simply one of the most talented & creative bands to ever exist. They are timeless. They were tight as as a band members, but musically as well. I am still im awe of them to this day.....40 years strong. ❤❤❤ Love your perspective! Great show as always, thank you!! 👏
Just love when the artist talk about how easy it was to write a song like it was meant to sound this way and not second guess it.🤘🤘
RIP Michael Hutchence, one of the best front men ever
I totally agree. Magical.
He was incredible!!!
@@ProfessorofRock Thanks for these videos Prof, never think you aren't making a difference. Episodes like this one remind me of how much I love this band and I go into a deep dive of their music for days. I was the same way with Tommy James the other day. That brings joy and it is greatly appreciated. Sometimes just a little reminder of the good things in life are enough of a nudge to bring you out of a funk.
INXS was my favourite band in the 80s, as an Aussie I was a fan of theirs since they first started out in the early 80s. I still love their music. What an incredibly talented bunch of guys. Saw them in concert in 1984 and Hutchence had a stage presence like I've never seen elsewhere. The abiding memory I have of the concert is the sex appeal that oozed off him from the stage. Amazing singer, a very distinctive voice, and songwriter. He's the one I miss the most. My sister and I often wonder if the punch to the head was the beginning of his spiral, he didn't seem the same after that. Anyway, he, Prince and Freddy are the ones I miss the most, all gone too soon, all so incredibly talented singers, musicians and songwriters. Great, great song, but I never feel happy to hear it, it was the song they played over and over when he died. It gives me a sick feeling when I hear it.
I feel so lucky to have seen INXS on their Listen Like Thieves and Kick tours.. Kick was - is - incredible from beginning to end, but I think LLT and The Swing are pretty much the same. I just dig ALL those songs. Michael personified rock STAR "oozing" with pure sexuality. I feel you! He had the gift of singing in one take when recording, the gift of writing and the gift of showmanship. He had the best musicians and band mates in the world. It's been heartbreaking learning about his history over the years as there were so many unanswered questions I agree that he was never the same after that accident, and who would be. I only wish he had more faith and took a beat in his desperation. All that you know is that he was in a lot of physical and emotional pain. I felt sad for Tiger Lily. On the flip side, I am glad to see that members like Andrew are still making music. "Watch the world argue, argue with itself. Who's gonna teach me peace and happiness?" Dancing on the Jetty
@@saraforhan6442 mo loop loop o lord[oo99
I know a lot of Aussies and INXS speaks to them in such a meaningful way. It’s so sad that we lost Michael at only 37. Apparently he got in an accident in the early 90s that caused a severe skull fracture, and he lost his sense of smell and taste after that. The next four years were very depressing for him, and one November day in 1997 he was crying and upset calling his girlfriend to come over and take care of him. When Michele arrived, he had already hanged himself. SO SAD! 😢
How I miss Michael Hutchence. He had it going on from every aspect: looks, voice, stage presence, and oh, those intriguing lyrics! Everything about his performances was cool then, and still is today.
Have you watched Dogs in Space?
But he was a drug addict.
Not every aspect. He was a cheater.
@@joshuagibson2520 So? Not unheard of in the music industry. Your favorite artists probably had their own problems with alcohol, drugs, etc. I'm struggling with a coffee addiction myself.
@@SRMoore1178 so, nothing. You just forgot to include that in your list.
Kick was THE first album that I could push play and not want to skip a single song. To this day it is still a band that if I am flipping radio stations and I hear a song from Kick, I stop flipping.
The album Kick had one big hit after another. Love the "Need You Tonight" video that moved right into "Mediate" where Michael did his Bob Dylan lyrics on the cards drop. "Never Tear Us Apart" is the best song they ever recorded, in my opinion. RIP Michael Hutchence 🙏
The Mediate video is so fun to watch. It’s like they were given a simple prompt: Try to think of as many words as you can that rhyme with “mediate”.
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 I think they got inspired by Bob Dylan's video for Subterranean Homesick Blues. I definitely prefer Mediate🎶
@@maxaroni15 Can totally see that!
@Maxaroni Totally agree about ‘Never Tear Us Apart’. One the best 80s song ever.
I missed Mediate mentioned in the video. The lyrics were inventive and fun.
INXS are an outstanding band-Can't believe Michael Hutchence has been gone twenty-five years already.
INXS love them!! No other band on earth can duplicate their sound. Instantly recognizable and it gets under your skin and into your soul. You can never be the same after hearing INXS!!!
They are truly one of a kind.
'Don't Change' off of Shabooh Shoobah was my introduction to INXS. Huge fan ever since. Wonderful interview.
That might be their best song!
@@ProfessorofRock Yes it is. I wholeheartedly agree!
Love Don’t Change too!
I'd forgotten about that song until it was recommended to me here on YT while I was on an 80's binge. What an incredible song. Love the synthesizer intro. It puts you into the stratosphere.
One of the best bands of our time - RIP Michael Hutchence 💖
No question. No QUESTION!
Lost too soon. 😢
Absolutely.
I played the Kick and Listen Like Thieves albums to death! Love them!
My favorite 80's group by far!!!!🙏RIP Michael🙏
I saw INXS live in 1985. I was just 16 when they came to my small home regional town in Australia which I couldn’t believe. Michael had myself and all my friends mesmerised with his stage presence even at this early stage of his career. A once in a generation performer for us and he is sadly missed but the performances of INXS will live on forever. Kick is an incredible album. Mystify is my favourite track and it has to be played loud!!!
I absolutely love x too! Listen to it regularly and front to back
They were my first live concert ever in Dubbo in NSW. I only went because my friends were going and I liked a boy who was into INXS. It blew my young teenage mind! iNXS live was AWESOME. It was many years before I went to a gig that came close. It didn’t surprise me when they become a global super group but, as good as it was, I don’t think Kick! is my favourited album.
Michael Hutchence gone way too soon! RIP Michael!
INXS took off like a rocket 🚀! Underrated song "The One Thing".
Thanks again for another great story, Professor!
The one thing is awesome!
That’s my favorite INXS song!
I have their greatest hits. So many great songs.
The One Thing is my favorite INXS I can’t even number the rest because I like them all almost equally, it depend on the moment.
Yes!! “The One Thing”. One of the best underrated songs of the 80s IMO.
Kick was just one of those albums that will live forever.......inxs were a truly great band and gifted with one of the best front men of all time
💯
Never Tear Us Apart is such a great song. Much like Wham's Careless Whisper, it evokes a haunting moody atmosphere and on both songs the sax is sooooo good.
Great comparison.
INXS was my very first concert in 1988. I'd loved their music for years already (the blessing of having much older sisters than myself). As an Australian I was amazed at their success across the world. I still listen to them today and my children love their music too. Andrew Farris, what a dude!
Never Tear Us Apart, one of my very favorite songs of all time. An absolute masterpiece. My heart breaks every time I listen to it. RIP Michael Hutchins. ❤️❤️
Couldn’t like this enough!
For some reason I have become re-obsessed with INXS recently. They definitely put out the sound of the 80s generation. Kick was a massive album, so many hits and one sexy and charismatic front man that was taken way too soon. It was a guarantee 💯 % to get everyone on the dance floor when anything by them was played in any club. I miss that time and those days for sure. It's impossible to pick a favorite off the album when they all get you in different ways. Thanks for the interview. Keep rocking on!
I’m listening to this on November 21st, 2022. Tomorrow is 25 years since the tragic passing of Michael Hutchence. I loved their music and still do to this day. I’ve watched a lot of videos and interviews with and about them and have to say they were one of the best. Highly underrated and deserving of much more accolades. They deserve to be in the rock hall in Cleveland!
Wow. What a fantastic interview. INXS are one of those rare "original" bands, where no one else sound like them and never could, like The Red Hot Chili Peppers or The Police or The Cars. They're a true "stand-alone" act. And this video is a pure delight. I could listen to Andy talk about music all day.
I'm a big INXS fan. First track I recall hearing and connecting to was The One Thing from '82s Shabooh Shoobah. They always sounded different and fresh, unique. I really enjoyed The Swing, it may be my favorite INXS album. First year college with ability to skip class and ski on any fresh powder day off I'd go... listening to Johnson's Aeroplane on the Sports Walkman while immersed in powder snow in the middle of fog and cold... an unforgettable experience. Such a unique record. No one I know cared for it much. Some took to Listen Like Thieves. Was a bit OMG when the entire planet took to KICK, but hey... so did I! Great record. Don't go back to it much as it's just so HUGE it may be suffering from over exposure still. If you're an INXS fan at all I recommend taking a moment to go all the way back to the beginning...their 1980 self-titled. On a Bus, Learn To Smile, Just Keep Walking... sound so great still. Gives you a listen into the early undeniable sound that would later take over the world. And let's not forget Don't Change with it's fevered paced drumming and driving guitars... it's deserving of it's very own POR episode. Don't change for you... don't change a thing for me!!
The One Thing and Don’t Change are INXS at their best IMO. Just rocking, otherworldly, cool songs right there.
As a teenager, Shabooh Shoobah, was so different. Don't Change is still my favourite song
The Swing was my favourite album and Johnson’s Aeroplane was the song I enjoyed the most too! The story is heartbreaking and it’s very moody in atmosphere.
@@wonk1238 Those tracks got regular rotation on Mtv and KROQ prior to Kick (grew up in LA) and are still great songs, I agree. Everything was so different at the time, honestly. So many great, unique bands doing their thing. There's a reason 80's music has remained so popular.
In the early 80s, I was a teen who discovered the Doors and fell in love with Jim's lyricism and Ray's keyboard, so when INXS Kick came out and I heard and saw a newer version of what the Doors had provided, I was a fan instantly.
No kidding! They were the 80s Doors.
Imagine how much more music we could have had from them. 😔😔
As a Kiwi, INXS was a huge part of the musical landscape when I was a young teenager.
That bass line though!!! Hutchence and Andrew made INXS one of the best popular rock and roll bands of all time imo. I never realized just how special they were because I was just a kid who loved every single I heard from them. Those 2 we're on par with some of the best and INXS was years ahead of their time. I always thought Michael reminded me of Morrison but I never knew Ray felt the same 😂 Truly an amazing frontman RIP
We would not have had such cool music without Andrew and Michael.
As a bass player myself, I love the bass lines in all their songs. Gary is a fantastic bass player. Original Sin is one of his best ones.
@@fivestring65ify Oh God yes. I LOVE "Original Sin."
@@fivestring65ify I agree!
Add Kirk Pengilly to that mix, and I'll agree.
INXS will always be in my top 5 bands of all time. Michael was my first crush. Michael's voice never failed him.. I hope INXS knows that we still love their music.
It’s so sad. Michael was WONDERFUL.
Don’t Change is my all time favourite INXS song, I couldn’t listen to Never Tear US Apart after they played that song at his funeral as his coffin left the church, passing under my feet where I stood above in the balcony. My god, Michael was a one in a million and played a massive role in my life. Still missed by millions.
I still love that song to this day. That was a nice listen about the album.
My very first concert: INXS in 1988. It was such an awesome live show. This was one of my favorite bands for awhile. I played this album so many times I'm surprised the tape didn't wear out or break! 😂
Haha, no kidding!
Year before I was born ! Jealous.
Where was the concert ??
@@symphonyinkart in Seattle, WA
They didn't but the inlays did.
INXS was so good. One of the few bands I never get tired of.
I have been hooked on INXS since I first heard Just Keep Walking waaaay back in the early 80s. Used to go to my local to hear them play. I can still remember the first time I heard Don’t Change and the Shaboo Shabah album and the moment I knew these guys were going to be huge. I still miss Michael dearly.
Ahhh Michael Hutchence RIP. Reminded me of an up and coming Mick Jagger with his swagger. But being thought of as Jim Morrison ain't bad either. INXS was one of my favorite bands of the 80s. Saw them live in Bowling Green State University Anderson arena in 85. What a great show!
Whenever I listen to "Never Tear Us Apart", I have to listen to the sax solo at least twice! Short, but gives me goosebumps every time.
The Big Man, Clarence Clemons is my all-time favorite sax man, but the solo in this song gets my heart racing.
It's one of the best of the 80s
One of the greatest sax solos, PERIOD. RIP Clarence, one of a kind.
Kirk is amazing. Great guitar player too.
I got to see INXS a couple of times live, back in the 80s in Los Angeles and in Irvine California and when I saw them in Irvine at the outdoor Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre, and Never Tear Us Apart was played the stage lighting was almost completely black from no lighting or very little and when the saxophone solo began the follow spot light operator using a Congo Blue gel keyed in on the very top of the PA system speakers on stage right which had to be 30 feet high above the atage and there was the saxophone player, sitting on top of the speaker stack and the crowd went wild. It was such a cool and unexpected thing to do but that was what INXS was ... cool and unexpected, always. One of my all time top ten almoat top five bands of all times.
Thanks Professor for this video and for interviewing Andrew in his vehicle. Hahahaha
Hairs on m my arms every time as well
The album kick has to be the finest piece of music to come out of the '80s
I remember they were real big back when I was in high school. They were all over the radio too. I danced to their songs at high school dances. Great memories. Thanks.
Great interview, POR! I was lucky enough to see INXS in a small venue, about 2000 people, shortly before release of Listen Like Thieves. Everyone was on their feet and dancing the whole show. Michael was a magical being. He had our whole audience in his hand. The whole band worked together flawlessly. Great night!
Super cool! Wish I could have seen Michael and the band live.
Inxs was the first concert I ever attended. It was great! I was 16 and the world was mine! I loved their music and thought I was so cool because I was there. I was so sad when Michael died. Even sadder are the ripples and cracks made by his death.
Fantastic singer with so much to give. Shame he left this world too soon! Keep on rocking brother!
Rest in heaven. 💔
Back then, we just kept playing song after song from that album. It's still fantastic. "The Devil inside" was my favorite from that album. My favorite INXS song was "Don't Change" from Shabooh Shoobah. Great interview, Professor.
Really personifies his sensuality that song. It’s like going on a ride on how he exactly performs / behaves.
Even just listening without seeing.
One of my first albums as a kid!! Years later and I still love listening to. INXS but kick will always be my favourite album of all time! A proud Aussie!!! Boy we got some talent down under!!!😂
The footage of Michael Hutchence's coffin leaving Sydney Cathedral after his funeral in 1997 was shocking and moving in equal measure. The finality, and tragedy. The documentary about his life shown in the last couple of years on the BBC is very powerful. It paints him in a very sympathetic light and shows how the unprovoked attack on him caused a brain injury that had such an adverse effect on his life. INXS is a great band and he was a charismatic front man. RIP.
I agree. What a loss.
It was just so heartbreaking to watch. He was only in his 30s! So many tragic things happened to such a sweet and innocent young man with an amazing voice. RIP Michael.
He was indeed like Morrison. He didn't have a stage persona. He was this way all the time.
@@fivestring65ify if you were to watch Richard Lowenstein’s ‘Mystify: Michael Hutchence’ (2019)
After the success of Kick Michael’s half sister did insist that Michael did see that his stage presence as “the other Michael Hutchence” and Michael does briefly talk about his different versions of himself hat he created to deal with the fame and stress of that time (The Kick period)
However Michael friend Chris Bailey (Lead singer of the Saints) suggested that Michael did have the same generosity of spirit when performing as what he did as a person
So compared to someone like Jim Morrison he didn’t have to make up a character but he did try and distance himself however the celebrity lifestyle and consequences caught up with him and then he suffered brain damage and found it harder to navigate
If only he had of stayed in the hospital longer ! I wonder if he would have him still today
Great interview. So tragic for the band, and Hutchence and his family. He was an awesome front man with generations of charisma remaining.
I agree. Thanks Mike
R.I.P. Michael.
Genius interview. I loved INXS from the 1st cut I heard from Kick. Michael was just a genius frontman, possessing some serious magic we've never seen since. And the collaboration with buddy Andrew Farriss was just meant to be. Richard Lowenstein knew how to capture all of that on video and the rest is history. They NEED to ne in the Hall of Fame!
There’s so much great 1980’s music from Australia that never saw the light of day in the USA due to luck, or lack of it.
Cold Chisel anyone ?
Looking at my Spotify stats, turns out in the last year my most listened to band is INXS. They're just timeless. All their big hits remind me of good times in my childhood and still have a vibe and mood to them that I can appreciate as an adult. It's music I just don't get sick of.
My God mine is the same!! Lol it's so funny I found your comment! I thought it was just me.
Not surprised at all. These "underrated" comments are bizarre. That's not an adjective I'd used to describe INXS. Maybe for Sad Lovers & Giants or something.
Summer of 87' was magical in the music world
As a young kid growing up in the '80s, I can't pinpoint exactly when I first heard the singles from 'Kick' but those songs were everywhere! Years later I bought the album at a rummage sale and the songs still stand up.
Even though the album came out more than a decade before I was born, it still blew me away the first time I heard it. So many great Australian artists and albums during that period, yet Kick was the only album that really had a massive impact overseas.
Michael Hutchence was such a musical genius and the tragic last few years of his life not only hurt the fans, but it took an awful toll on him as well.
Michael Hutchence was a natural born star. Never seen anything like it.
His death still makes my husband and I sad. Unfortunately I would never have the opportunity to attend one of their live shows, it just never happened like that, but INXS is one of my favorite bands and will forever be on my list. Never Tear Us Apart is one of my all time favorite songs.
RIP Michael.
Kick is one of my favorite albums from the 80's, and probably among my top 10 all-time albums. I remember after hearing Never Tear Us Apart the first time, I wasn't a fan of it. Slowly, over time, it became one of my favorite tracks on the album and is currently one of my favorite all-time tracks. The lyrics are what drew me in and made me take a second listen to the song. It's a beautiful love song, and I challenge anyone to come up with something better.
This one was amazing I loved what Andrew Farriss said, "Is that really what you want to say." So simple and such great advice! INXS and a handful of other bands helped to shape my love of music. I melted like so many others at the site of Michael Hutchence but I still love the music today and love them just as much. On a side note: I worked as a waitress at a restaurant where the chef always put fennel in his soups and I made a song out of it and it was called "Fennel Inside"- Fennel inside fennel inside, every single soup he makes has fennel inside. LOL!
Andrew and Michael saw the possibilities of hip hop and what actually did happen, proves how a head of their time they were! And yes, Never Tear Us Apart is #1 on my INXS list!
Agree!
The great are the ones not bound by Genres! Seeing these guys in the early days in Perth they were something. Michael was such a dag but pulled off so cool.. Great music.. Great stage presence.. Just mates having a great time..
"But If I hurt you, I'd make wine from your tears"...
Best lyric from any love song.
This is one of Greatest bands Ever!!!
INXS album Kick is one of the best albums of the latter 80's. So many great songs came from that album. "Never Tears Us Apart" is their best ballad. It has an old-school bluesy sound that I have always enjoyed. Fantastic song.
Love the hell out of Kick---it's the one INXS album I'd play all the time because just about all the songs on it were bangers---the title track, New Sensation, The Devil Inside, Need You Tonight, and of course, Never Tear Us Apart. And, yeah, it sucks that Michael Hutchence died too young---he had just put out an album with INXS before he passed away.
I also like how they incorporated some hip-hop into their songs around that time, too and it shows.
It sounded like nothing else on the charts at the time. Truly distinctive and unique.
I saw them in concert shortly before Michael Hutchence died. Glad I had the chance to see them before that happened.
Nice! How were they?
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 Excellent!
@@shannonhailey7187 That’s great to hear. They are really awesome live.
I'm truly stunned that INXS had so many songs that I loved in that period of time. I honestly hadn't thought of it. Thanks for this reminder of better days. 🥰
I remember being introduced to this because my cousin bought the cassette. I was familiar with most of the hits, but never got to listen to the whole album until a few years later. I was like, 'Why didn't I listen to everything the first time around!'. Great album!
My friends and I were into metal in the late 80s. The summer after high school we rotated between iron maiden, queensryche, guns n roses...and INXS. I thought it was weird when my friend popped in his Kick cassette, but I liked it too so no complaints from me. Just shows how universally liked the band was.
I’ve been waiting to hear about this absolutely killer song! Michael Hutchins’s vocal gives me chills.
He KILLS IT!
INXS was and still is one of favorite bands. I was gutted when Michael died; such a tragedy.
Back then and still today, love INXS!
That was an awesome interview! Farriss was really entertaining and seemed like a very decent guy. Thanks Professor for another good one!
Except it's Andrew Farriss, not Tim. lol.
The awful news of Michael’s passing was devastating for us Aussies. INXS experimented with a few singers in years following. I was lucky enough in mid 2000s to see them
Live with JD Fortune at an open air show. The final song of the night was Never Tear Us Apart with Michael singing it on a huge screen. I’d have to say that was one of the most emotional musical memories. The crowd who had been singing and cheering all night just stood silent. I’ll never forget that night. 😔
I'll bet the tears were flooding all around the venue too at that time. 🙏
Way ahead of their time, still ahead today!
Andrew my almost twin!!!! God bless him! INXS had thee best fan club!!
My Parents loved this song.
I saw them many times from 1982-1993. My fave concert was Clowes Hall. I had seventh row center seats to "Listen Like Thieves" tour.
Holy crud, 30 years since Kick debuted! 😳
Isn't that CRAZZZZY. time went by.
35!
Where's the time gone? ⏰️💨
@@ProfessorofRock Yeah, it makes wish that They Might Be Giants weren't quite so accurate in Older.😁
One of my favorite albums of ALL time, and to add bite to it-- it was during a transitional time from college to the military. It was fresh and poppy, but at its core was rebellious and freeing. When I went into the military I was focused on the next stage of my life but I was in full party mode when I settled in Germany. Oh boy Germany! I dated a voluptuous blond named Karen Schluter-- va-va-voom. Anyway, that's another story, but INXS was such cathartic mood bender. You could start out at zero and be at 100 mph in an instant. Great stories and awesome interview! 1 million subscribers is right around the corner!! What to do for that milestone??
I’m profoundly grateful to have been gobsmacked by this epic band.
I remember INXS from the early 1980’s, at first I thought they were daggy but then they became better and better with each year and they become rock icon’s. Thanks for sharing this video.
I think I've bought this album so many times. Cassette and CD or digital. I've either loaned it, lost it, or worn it out. I know every word on the whole album.
Absolutely loved that album and I still play it to this day at least once a week. Inxs was phenomenal. Another reason why the 80s rocked
Agreed!
For sure, Dave!
I always loved that Album and still play it today in many romantic sets
This is the "unofficial" club song for the Port Adelaide football club. The fans sing it in reference to the troubles Port Adelaide had in joining the Australian Football league. When there's a full house and this gets played over the PA the entire crowd erupts and it's just so powerful it absolutely blows you away! (Powerful is deliberate - Port Power is the club's nickname.)
It's crazy to think that KICK was almost never released. The top brass at Atlantic Records didn't like it and told them to start over. Chris Murphy had to go behind the executives backs and got it on some college radio stations, it took off and viola, you have a masterpiece called KICK. Thanks Chris!!!
Labels don't know everything 🤣
