    The last time we saw "Type S" badged on an Acura, it was over 12 years ago, but those of us who were there remember that "Type S" wasn't just an appearance package. Those cars got their own engines, suspension setups, and interiors, too. Now, the Type S is back, this time on the TLX Sport Sedan. It's got a unique, 350HP twin-scroll turbo V6 mated to a close-ratio 10-speed automatic and Acura's trademark "Super-Handling" all-wheel drive. In order to celebrate their new sedan's sporting credentials, they turned me loose on Laguna Seca to see how the TLX Type S handles basic track work.
    Acura provided transportation, lodging, meals, a personal vehicle, and a race track for this review.

      Its oversight that almost no journalist is noting. Matt seems to be the only one that has noticed it to make it a point in his review. Acura, why even have paddles on the wheel or a manual mode in general if it’ll just do the shifting regardless of drive mode?

    • @aspecreviews
      @aspecreviews Рік тому

      @@zatharos6427 sometimes the auto mode gets confused and shifts when you don't want it to. Also, the paddles allow you to downshift for engine braking. When a car is marketed as a performance vehicle, it makes sense to talk about how it performs in situations where that marketing would be applicable such as on a track. If this was a base trim TLX or some other comparable base trim vehicle, then yes, all of the performance concerns like automatic upshifts on redline or the brake-by-wire don't matter. But this is a performance vehicle and seeing how it performs on a track does provide valuable information. I had one of the very few 2003 CL Type S with a 6 Speed manual. It was a very good car for its time, but the FWD architecture left it desiring more. My sister had the next Gen TL Type S, also manual. So I experienced a few of the Type-S at the height of that meaning something.
    We never got the final TL with AWD though, so I don’t know about those but they seem well received.
    Acura lost me though as they haven’t produced driver’s cars that are practical also. Like many, I turned to German cars and haven’t looked back.
    I still enjoy looking around because I love cars. This is nice to see. It’s means competition for my S4... maybe. Let’s see how it tunes. If it can tune decently, it’s interesting (keeping stock turbos). If she remains a bit muted then I think the luster fades.
    My s4 went 333->440 just from a software upgrade (and I have the Dragy times to back that claim up, frankly I think it’s making a bit more based on a 113.5mph trap speed for a 3900lbs car) and can touch 500 with basic mods (HX, pullies and test pipes). The Q50/60s and the M340i and the AMG c43 are all proving to be (roughly) equally tunable platforms.
    If we see something similar on the TLX Type S, it could get some serious interest and attention. If she can’t make a decent chunk of power on stock kit or the transmission doesn’t hold up with more power than I think she’ll die off. I’m hoping the former is true, even if I never wind up looking at one it’s always good to have some serious direct competitors that make everybody up the ante.

The Acura would need a push just to get on the same page at its stock competition and that's pretty sad. Show me a haldex awd system that can do that before you keep saying SH-AWD and haldex are the same system. Initial tune-ability will depend on two things.
    1) How close to the maximum is Honda operating the high pressure fuel pump and DI injectors. This might hinder E85 use and also put an upper limit on HP with gas.
    2) And more importantly, are there enough sales of the car for Hondata or KTuner to warrant the manpower to develop the ECU software. Maybe HPD will contract with Hondata to make an HPD branded ECU tune. That would jumpstart the process.

      They don't care all that much, because neither does their target market. Those of us who want the lightest car possible, or the best power/weight ratio, or the fastest lap times, aren't shopping full sized family sedans. They're targeting the folks who think, "That BMW sport sedan is nice, but this is a little cheaper, drives almost just a good, and will probably last longer because it's from Japan."
