Is the 2021 Nissan GT-R Still a Budget Super Car?

  • Is the 2021 Nissan GT-R still relevant in a market full of double-clutch transmissions and turbochargers? Does it still wow us the way it used to? Zack went to Colorado to find out.
    This 2021 Nissan GT-R Premium still has the same foundation as the first one: a 3.8- liter V6 packing twin turbos anda 6-speed dual clutch sending power to all four wheels. The body is a mix of aluminum, steel, and carbon. For 2021, Nissan got rid of some trim levels, added a color, and changed a few other things but fundamentally it's the same car. A ground-up refresh would be nice but Nissan isn't exactly flush with cash these days.

      Good stuff when it was the new kid on the block. Sadly, at the current price tag it either needs to either have better interior/performance (i.e update that old 6 speed dual clutch). That being said, as Zack said, at 110k or so, I don't think many car could handle being modified like an R35, with the exception of the C8 Vette, but that doesn't have AWD.

      I mean it took Porsche nearly 10 years of 911 improvements to start beating the GT-R and only with it's GT and Turbo entries, Nissan is only
      doing yearly tweaks on a shoe-string budget by comparison. It goes to show exactly how capable the GT-R was and still is.
      I'd say Nissan earned the right to sell the GT-R with a strait face for as long as they have, especially when there isn't a direct competitor
      in the 110-120K range. Although selling the Nismo at the price its at now is pretty laughable.

    Almost every time we're at one of those events, my kids ask me "if you could have any supercar, what would it be?" My answer is always the GTR, not because it's the best, but because I could take them with me.

    My first memory with the GTR was during my internship at a Dutch car magazine in 2011. That was after the first facelift. I was given the privilege to return the GTR to Nissan Netherlands. Mind you; I just turned 20 then, so 550hp was quite a bit... When they gave me the keys the told me: "Be careful. Don't be "that" intern, ok?"
    I did two regular launches from a stop light, but nothing crazy, as I was terrified of breaking or crashing a +120k € vehicle.
    However, after I returned the vehicle and got back to the office, my manager told me that Nissan Netherlands immediately put the car on a scanner and found multiple error codes and overheating history. Turns out they had to replace the complete ECU afterwards to be able to fix it. And they were pretty mad.
    So I was immediately suspect, as I was the inexperienced kid who drove it last. Luckily for me, I had an older colleage with me during the return and he could testify that we did not do anything out of the ordinairy.
    Later that afternoon another colleage, who actually had the car for testing that week, mentioned that he put it on a dyno session to see if the car really put out 550 hp or not. Unfortunately the dyno session was during a severe heatwave and the car put on a shitload of warning lights afterwards. After a couple restarts they managed to reset those lights and they never thought anything of it, until Nissan Netherlands went to read the log of the vehicle...
    Still; special place in my heart that car. Fastest accelerating vehicle I've driven to date.

    Man Nissan Making the same model for a long time is a good thing. More parts available for "the people" is the way I look at it. Interior and comfort is what it is.... I'll be a future purchaser because of the bang for your buck performance.

    I agree with you. It's the best bargain supercar in my opinion. According to Nissan, this thing can lap the Nürburgring in around 7:16 seconds. So it's still 1 second faster than the current 911 Turbo S (7:17.3). I don't care about the acceleration, which is Tubo S was born to do (because who gonna drive always straight for rest of his life?). So for $112K this is the best performance car that money can buy.

    I feel like Nissan is just so busy making boring cars that they don't even care about making a new GT-R. They will keep making these for as long as they can. And people are still buying them just because its predecessor was an unobtainable icon.

      Unfortunately today, the used market is insane for these. 2017's are asking 105-110K. Used 19-20's are even being listed over MSRP with a few thousand miles. If you have to have a GT-R that's 2017+, it almost makes sense to buy a new one, assuming you can get it at MSRP.

    Excellent explanation on transmissions down-shifts with some competitors synchronizing to land on a certain RPM (PDK)... vs. how the GTR over-revs slightly & isn't as crisp in transition...That said, the GTR is aged but whatever the muscle car, exotic or hot SUV you might be in...if a GTR pulls up beside you... you have a serious fight on your hands...Its still a Rocket...

      So do many manufacturers of many cars, including the 911 and the Corvette. The difference is after 6-8 years, most manufacturers move to an entirely new model. I’m not a GT-R hater though, I’d happily drive one. Wouldn’t be my choice to buy new though.

  • @marcust510
    @marcust510 2 роки тому +5

    After all this time it’s still beautiful. This car changed the game when it comes to performance for sports cars. It may have not dominated the racing like the R32 BUT I would argue that number chasing game (0-60mph & ESPECIALLY on the Nurburgring) that manufactures have been doing for the last 10+ years is because of how ahead of it’s time this car was in comparison to other sports cars in 2007/2008. In that regard the R35 carries the torch & legacy of the infamous R32.
    PS: I paused at 0:47 to write this soooooooo if Zach mentions any of this in the video my bad ahead of time 😂. I’ll be sure to do an “edit” if need be lol

    • @MiguelGarcia-vj7oo
      @MiguelGarcia-vj7oo 2 роки тому

      I wouldn't say that...... The lap records were already a thing, this just helped propagate it........ This car has already aged terribly.... It's one of the most digital sports car of our time... A SNES controller had more tactile feedback then the r35....... This thing is only good for drag racing applications.... Which helps it's current popularity...... But as a driver's car, forget about it...... this will never be a r32, or at least a r34.....

    • @marcust510
      @marcust510 2 роки тому

      @@MiguelGarcia-vj7oo I never said it was a drivers car. Wouldn’t be foolish enough to make that ridiculous statement. What I’m speaking on is the technology behind the speed & the price point in which you could get that performance back in 2007/2008. The car is dated in more way than one TODAY. But back then, it was a game changer in the sports car world, in more ways than one. It was faster than anything else (not just in a straight line), & cheaper than anything else. The biggest game changer was its transaxle dct awd system. I understand manufacturers had been testing & setting lap times & going for records prior to the R35. But the public interest as well as manufacturers interest especially for marketing purposes skyrocketed after the R35 came around. We have been in a sort of speed war ever since lol.
      So yup definitely not a drivers car. Anything that doesn’t have 3 pedals & a manual gearbox, in my opinion, is out of & doesn’t even belong in the “drivers car” conversation. In that regard, all previous GTRs are more of a drivers car than the R35.

    Godzilla is a fantastic car, but there’s one other option you didn’t mention, the RS3 (especially the new one about to launch). An equally robust AWD platform that can be upgraded into the 8s in the quarter mile, and with the right setup can handle pretty well. Granted, not as good as the GTR, but the latest RS3 about to come out looks very much like it will given the Ring time it posted! Plus you can get an RS3 fully spec’d with carbon ceramic brakes for under 100k. 😁

    I think that when the GT-R came out 15 years ago, it was already so good that it's hard to see how to improve it, but Nissan was able to make slight changes year after year to the point where I think there's nothing else to really change at this point. In my opinion, the GT-R is the best that it can be, and it's still a really good performer today. The fact that it is as good as it is shows just how ahead of its time it was. I think the reason behind the laggy transmission in automatic is because this transmission was designed like that on purpose. It was meant to be used for racing purposes to be as smooth as can be and not really for driving slowly. I'd gladly buy an R35 GT-R today, but it's discontinued, so now I'm sad :(

    When GT-R launched in US, price was in the $70k range. It was cheaper than the cheapest 911, which had only just started offering the PDK in 2009, despite running with the turbo that realistically stickered on lots at twice the price or more. An astounding performance bargain. The interior, lack of refinement, etc., were not THAT bad comparatively back then, and, again, relative price was amazing. I wanted one and would have bought one had I been in a position to do so back then.
    Now, price has gone up far quicker than inflation, but the same dated interior, lack of refinement, etc., are all still there. As much as I love the soul and character of this car, the rapid price hikes without addressing its very real weaknesses took it off my list as anything to consider buying. If this was still, say, $90k with a bit less performance but an interior and ride refinement at least comparable to previous generation 911, different story.

    I love my 2015 GTR as do 95% of the people that see it, and 100% of the people that ride in it. A cobb (or similar) tuner takes care of the 'always in 6th' problem. Lots of dynomat made the car quieter inside and the stereo sound waaay better. I think the 2021 is definitely an upgrade over the 2015. Not so much of an upgrade over the 2017 model.
