I am a lifelong John Denver fan and was grateful to have seen him live six months before his death. "Annie's Song" is a snapshot of when the world was much more beautiful.
This is a very nice live version, but you do owe it to yourself to hear the studio production with the beautiful enhanced strings accompaniment and added reverb on his already emotional and engrossing vocals . John Denver seemed like such a beautiful soul that definitely shown through in his music. This is one hell of a love song. Check out "Take Me Home Country Roads" by him next.
There it us Brother! That Beautiful Guild 12 string. That chiming tone is so distinctive. When you get used to it, there is no way to miss it in any song. I Love John Denver's music. Poems, Prayers, and Promises next please.
John Denver was a great singer-songwriter & actor. He had so many hits in the 70's-80's. Some of his signature songs were "Take Me Home, Country Roads", "Rocky Mountain High", "Poems, Prayers & Promises", "Calypso", "Thank God I'm A Country Boy", "Sunshine On My Shoulders" etc. John appeared in several films & television specials during the 70's-80's, including the 1977 hit "Oh, God!", in which he starred alongside George Burns.
He also appeared on The Muppets many times and did two holiday specials with them. They released two albums with music from those specials. You know you’ve arrived when you get to sing a duet with Kermit the Frog.🐸
JD has so many beautiful and emotional songs that people forget to mention his humor. Grandma's Feather Bed is one of my favorite songs of his. He also put out a Christmas album with The Muppets.
My favorite John Denver song. Love your reaction. I like to think that he's looking down and smiling, seeing younger generations appreciating his talent. I say looking down because that voice could only be in heaven. Thank you for posting this one, Shawn!
John Denver had an incredbly accurate voice pitch-wise, but also a very expressive voice. This one and Take Me Home Country Roads are his best (for me). I also like Calypso. He wrote the big hit for Peter, Paul, and Mary: Leaving On A Jet Plane. John performed a live version of that with Mama Cass Elliott who was one of the best female vocalists ever. That one is amazing.
Thank you. I have a soft spot for John Denver. I also have a sad memory of him tied to my own personal history. On the day I was being driven to the hospital by my parents for surgery (in the very early morning hours) it was announced on the radio that he had died from a crash of his private plane. :( @@alchemy-oi8xf
The channel Wings of Pegasus does a good analysis of his voice. He does sing slightly flat sometimes, but ever so slightly, and that's what makes his voice so natural. To my ear, he sounds close to perfect. And his vibrato... I'm not into this style of music, but this song is magical.
@@zoeherriot Yes, he does sing slightly flat at times, that's true! I think out ears are expecting things to be a bit flat or sharp here and there when listening to the human voice, in speech or in singing. Well, maybe the current generation is being taught to expect robotic perfection in singing now, which is a shame.
@@lauraallen55 it is a shame, it doesn’t sound natural. Denver’s voice is crazy good though - it’s not even a genre of music I typically listen to, but there is something about his tone that makes me crack out this song regularly.
Huge Denver song. Played this as our wedding dance. Was 18. Didn't last, but the song has some really good memories! Have all his music, still listen. He's one of a kind! Never be another!🙂✌️
I jumped up to watch this when I got the alert! I knew you would just love this! You would also love “Take me home country roads” … “Calypso.” …& “Thank God I’m a Country Boy” To name 3 of many many amazing songs by John! As always, loved your reaction! 😀
One of the prettiest songs ever written. My wife & I danced to this song as our 2nd dance at our receiption (1st song was Hold me, Thrill me by Mel Carter a 1965 hit)
Beautiful reaction to a beautiful song and performance, man. He's a very important part of my childhood and it is fantastic to see you really getting what he was all about. He's got so much good stuff. Maybe check out a couple of his up-tempo bangers: Grandma's Feather Bed Thank God I'm a Country Boy
Shawn, I listened to this concert on CD every single day of high school, from the bus rides to waiting in the halls for class! John is the gospel of my life! My 2 favorite songs from this album that I think you'll enjoy are "Poems, Prayers, and Promises" and "Shanghai Breezes!" Thank you so much for listening and sharing John's music!
Love this so much. He's one of the greatest emotional singer songwriters ever for me. I love how you reacted! I love you n your channel. You're heartfelt words and genuine responses. He's one of the best 12 sring guitarists! / picking pattern pros ever too. Just been one of my favs 'almost' up there with Neil Young but in a very different way. THANK YOU SHAWN. I wish I had money. I'd give it to you.
If you want to see John demonstrate his acting chops, then check out the wonderful and humorous movie "OH GOD" featuring the great George Burns. Such a cool film.
12-string picking, and no autotune on the voice. Gorgeous. He had a charmingly warm and goofy personality - a country and western hippie. To quote John: "Faaaar out!" Try his song "Calypso" next, written for environmentalist and documentary-maker Jacques Cousteau.
No autotune! the dude had a voice. Such a strong voice and strong character; too soon lost. What a love song. For both life and Annie.....Ajax! Whoa, the dude could ski too. (from Colorado, btw)
And this was Live, no electronic accompaniments, no Apple Imacs to keep it all together and in sync, this was an accomplished group of musicians behind a master poet and songster, RIP JD we are poorer now you have gone to rest 👏
Thank you so much for reacting to this one Shawn! You said it best, it’s too beautiful to be a live version. It’s such a moving song. The lyrics are amazing. Like others have said, you really need to hear the studio version to really hear the full beauty of it all. This song still moves me to tears. Wow, just wow. ❤️
Such a beautiful performance of a wonderful song. Too short on this earth. A love song for the ages and one that resonates in my heart. Thank you even for the tears which brings peace to my soul. Blessings to all from Washington State.
Looking for Space, Come and let me look in your eyes, Sad song are some of my many favorites. Thanks for your reaction and appreciation of this great singer/songwriter!
Love Denvers voice...nothing like it. Another beautiful song by John is DON'T CLOSE YOUR EYES (tonight)... And a fun little diddy is his THANK GOD IM A COUNTRY BOY. check them out!!
Now, please treat yourself to the final song from this concert tutled Amazon. You will be amazed in an entirely different way. Thank you so much fir finding this one! Saw John twice, and better live than studio.
Annie's parents owned a restaurant near St Peter, MN which is where I went to college. I ate there on a sorority date night event (it was kind of a fancy restaurant). But regarding the song, it was one of the top wedding songs back in the 70s.
John gave us so many great songs! I'm partial to "This Old Guitar" (there's a great live version available on UA-cam), "Matthew," and "For Baby (for Bobby)." I think his original studio recording of "Leaving on a Jet Plane" is the best version out there. If you want some fun stuff, check out his early folk-singer work with the Mitchell Trio in the 1960s. "Your Friendly Liberal Neighborhood KKK," recorded in 1966 (there's a live version of that online, too), still hits hard!
Aw, John Denver is one of a handful of singer/songwriters that have both helped me define my emotional life and inspired me to write. You've covered several of them now, John Denver, Jackson Browne, Jim Croce, Gordon Lightfoot, but one you haven't reacted to yet is Dan Fogelberg. I highly recommend starting with his song called Longer, this one along with the one you just heard, is one of the most beautiful romantic songs I know, or the song Part of the Plan, which is partly responsible for my becoming a poet. With Fogelberg, I suggest stick with studio recordings.
He and "Annie" (his wife) had argued over something simple and stupid, such as the proper way to make a bed. It got pretty angry, and we've all seen this, particularly when the participants are tired. He decided to leave and go skiing ... got on the lift, feeling guilty and wrote this song on the way up. The beauty of this man is unbelievable.
John Denver is a great singer and song writer. He has loads of fantastic songs and sounds better live than on the studio versions. This song is really good and was written by John on a ski lift in 10-15 mintues after he had an argument with his wife, but if you want another great love song of his listen to 'For You' live at the same Wildlife Concert. He died far too young and is such a loss to the world.
You should react to his song, For You, from this same concert. Talk about a beautiful love song and he plays the piano in that one❣️Enjoying your reactions.
Thank you so much Shawn. Yes, this was the right one. John,...is John. What an amazing human he was. Another one of my faves from this concert is For You. The whole concert your heart will be in your throat. Many thanks.
It's hard to go wrong with John Denver, but I think you'd really enjoy "Perhaps Love." It's been covered several several times, and he also did it as a duet with Placido Domingo, but his original version is still the best.
He wrote this for the love of his life, Annie, who he also cheated on for years while on the road. ("Leavin' On a Jet Plane": "There's so many times I've let you down So many times I've played around I tell you now, they don't mean a thing Every place I go, I'll think of you Every song I sing, I'll sing for you When I come back, I'll bring your wedding ring" He was an incredibly talented, but flawed human.
You've heard and reviewed the studio version of Rocky Mountain High so now do a review of the live version from this Wildfire Concert. The live version is even better, if that's even possible! Also, check out Wild Montana Skies and Calypso - both just awesome!
The male Karen Carpenter (or Karen was the male John Denver) 💚 My fave song is one you don't hear very often but it's a good one, Don't Close your Eyes Tonight 🎵🎶
He wrote this after an argument with his then wife Annie. He was on a ski lift and the song came to him. He wrote it in 15 minutes. He went home and sang it to her. Needless to say they made up!
This man had a voice as smooth as silk and he could hold a note perfectly.
A true legend.
One of the most beautiful songs ever! John Denver was magical!!
I am a lifelong John Denver fan and was grateful to have seen him live six months before his death. "Annie's Song" is a snapshot of when the world was much more beautiful.
I totally agree with you and saw John on July 31, 1997. Still listen to him every day.
John Denver "Annie's Song" is absolutely amazing. Another amazing song you should react to also live from The Wildlife Concert is called "For You".
This is a very nice live version, but you do owe it to yourself to hear the studio production with the beautiful enhanced strings accompaniment and added reverb on his already emotional and engrossing vocals .

The live recording of This Old Guitar is excellent 👍
John Denver, truly a songs best friend.

John Denver's songs are a spiritual experiences. Overwhelmingly emotional. I'm so glad you loved this.
JD has so many beautiful and emotional songs that people forget to mention his humor. Grandma's Feather Bed is one of my favorite songs of his. He also put out a Christmas album with The Muppets.
Everytime we went camping ... I love you daddy, and miss you ❤
This song was written for his first wife. American treasure.
One of John's best and most emotional tunes. He has a vibe.
My favorite John Denver song. Love your reaction. I like to think that he's looking down and smiling, seeing younger generations appreciating his talent. I say looking down because that voice could only be in heaven. Thank you for posting this one, Shawn!

John Denver at the top table for singer songwriting. such soul in his voice. He was a special musician

Every time I hear John Denver's beautiful soul sing, I tear it up. John was a worldwide treasure. RIP John🪷
A well loved artist and deservedly so.
Possibly one of the most underrated love songs. Poetry in motion flowing from the heart.
Love all his songs! Calypso is a good one. Country Roads. Country Boy. Sheesh, too many to name🙂
He has one of the most touching singing voices ever!
Thank you! I had the privilege of seeing John in concert six times; my very first concert at 12 y.o. was John Denver! He and his music were a gift.

This is one of my top 10 songs of all time! nuff said.
Pure talent with soul and meaning. They don’t make music like this anymore. Live with no editing or auto tune. Amazing.
A real Masterpiece bro
This guy is so missed,RIPJohn Denver. Thanks for the music .
Check out "Sunshine (on my shoulder)."
.
Yes definitely check out the studio version. Btw there's a movie about John Denver's life, played by actors. The woman playing Annie is so cute 😊
