This is what happens when you cut costs on building materials and cheap labor. All "shine" and no substance. Looks like bad drainage so the basement flooded every rainy season and it eventually took its toll. What's sad to me is that some really pretty mid century home was probably there before and it was torn down to make way for this gaudy spectacle which could have lasted had they not skimped on a fly-by-night builder and used cheap materials and cheap labor. The house was too "haphazardly" built which is a huge indicator of that. You know what they say, "never judge a book by its cover" and the only thing good about this place was its cover. If you're going to build, get a reputable contractor, skilled workers, an architect who isn't drunk and quality materials. Treated sheetrock, for instance, would have inhibited that mold. Sad. Smh.

I own a house built in 1887. 5 years ago a put in a new bathroom and I can already see it isn’t going to last another 5 years. Great design, bad workmanship, and the company that did it no longer exists‘fit by night’

@@craiggillett5985 So sorry to hear. Its getting to the point where we have to become professionals ourselves because people just don't care about their workmanship anymore. They just slap it all together, grab that check and run. My house was built in 1954 and last year my own bathroom was remodeled. It's a wreck. Sheetrock on ceiling separating from the wall, crumbling sheetrock around outlets and light switch...they never did come back and finish putting the cabinet doors on and couldn't find them. Never got my tub glazed and now there are big chips of enamel missing. Geez. Nobody cares anymore and it's crazy...most companies got their business through word of mouth.

My 2nd purchased house was built in 1919 and it’s absolutely gorgeous 4 bedroom 2 bathroom 2 living rooms breakfast nook huge corner lot where it’s sitting but it’s so amazing how well it was built nothing wrong at all with it and most of it is original, my 1st purchased house was being swallowed by the land, if you pour water out in the corer of the house the water goes nowhere, my cousin said it’s because the foundation is broken into pieces (hes worked foundations for 20+ years) there was mold stuck between the ceiling and roof, the walls were all broken floor to ceiling, electrical problems up the arse, draining just going under the house instead of down the pipes (hence the foundation issues)

Found out her husband was cheating (so got divorced) then kids grew up and moved out. She's been trying to sell it for at least 10 years now and the price has come down lower and lower. nice big house, kept wondering why someone would want to tear it down and build something else. and the basement answered the question. no damage to the upper floors, all belongings removed, tells me that flood in the basement that was 3 or 4 feet high did that house in. from the water lines looks like the entire basement was flooded. my thought is some pipe broke in the basement somewhere.

Omg. Literally peak 2000’s. Those bathrooms, the vaulted cedar ceilings, the black and gold accents on the fireplace, built in fish tank... hilarious. A bit of 90’s design in here too which is expected - this era of home building is often a weird combination of old and new stylings. Cool to see those details. That silly kitchen too... rounded edges for days. So “of the era”, when granite/stone countertops became all the rage. I can’t get over the tile used in all of these bathrooms. LUXURY... 😂
The statue by the fireplace is of Ganesha, a Hindu god.

It is probably cheaper and safer to demolish and rebuild, and why would you want to take chances when it has been proven that black mold can cause such serious health problems. It's a shame this home's basement mold condemned it to demolition. One has to wonder why sump and dehumidification wasn't kept up if it was going to be resold at one point. Or whether the ultra rich snob of a purchaser just didn't even CARE to give a second thought of living in 'someone else's space'. Major eyeroll! LoL

Another unique find; when I read the description (“3 acre property”) I could see right away it was a tear down, regardless of the water damage. Where I live land is at a premium - just outside of NYC, most suburban lots are 50’ x 100’ until you get much further east, but not near the ocean.
Growing up, anyone who built a ranch house had to have a lot of money to afford the land to build on; including all the usual amenities of a two story home was a costly proposition. It came down to “why build out when you can build up?”
A lot of these abandoned mansions you and you cohorts explore seem to have fallen victim to flooded basements; is it from burst pipes in the winter, or is something else causing such damage?
Technically, the difference between California shutters and plantation shutters is louver size - 2.5 inches vs 3.5 inches. Plantation shutter esthetics are best served on larger windows and doors found in larger homes and mansions.
Oh, and that statue was of Ganesh, the Hindu elephant god.

His daughter Huguette lived to be 104, dying in 2011. He was quite the scoundrel, but the rest of his extended family can claim a number of achievements - they are fascinating. Huguette lived the last 20+ as a recluse, mostly in a hospital in NYC although not really ill.
She has a string of meticulously kept, but rarely occupied mansions; in addition to the 42 room apartment on Central Park, she had a stunning oceanfront estate in Santa Barbara that was torn down & completely rebuilt during the Depression in order to provide jobs to the locals. She never went back to it after the 50s, but it had a full staff that maintained it, ready for her, until the day she died. Another house in Connecticut was bought in 1952 but never occupied - yet there were full time caretakers on the 53 acres until 2011.
An accomplished painter in her youth, she left a $300 million dollar fortune, mostly to charity. Her biography, “Empty Mansions”, is slated to be made into a movie.

LGB LGB I think her short marriage did something to her, she seemed out going before, but after she just withdrew into a world of her own making. When I live in nyc I walked by where their house once stood quite often, wish I’d know about that history then seeing that one or more or the room from the house are now in a museum.

    • @lgblgb7489
      @lgblgb7489 4 роки тому

yettobseen - Her marriage did change her; she was a much more guarded person afterwards. The vast age difference between her father and mother (62 vs 23) may also have played a role.
As for the mansion? It took almost as long to build as it stood, with several controversies. The original architect was not licensed to practice in the US, and there was some fast footwork getting the plans approved as those of an American architect who did little work on them. There was also some issue with buying the quarry to supply the stone - a way of circumventing taxes and the stoneworkers union. It contained a number of technological innovations, including an elevator that lower cars to the underground garage. Oddly enough, because the house took so long to build it quick fell out of fashion and was considered quite ugly by most Hew Yorkers - although I’m sure their low opinion of him colored that perception.
A thoroughly corrupt politician, he once said “I never bought a man who wasn’t for sale”. His corruption and bribery contributed to the passing of the 17th amendment governing the election and appointment of senators.
It was commonly known that the likes of Mark Twain despised him.

The wood floors alone took my breath away. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I can tell from the colors of paint, hardware and fixtures white casings, window treatments when it was built. White and gold were the to have fixtures. Unfortunately that black mold is deadly. Spores could be anywhere It’s as if the home was in a flood or horrific water surge. Likely the reason for demolition.. The next mansion builder might seriously consider several sump pumps if that’s the case.

Usually whoever is contracted to tear it down will do that or hire someone to do it, and then they either sell it themselves, or they sell the entire lot to a place that sells reclaimed floors, fixtures, etc. Or they just trash it all. Depends on which way makes them more money or they think will make them more money. A lot of stuff in that house is still salvageable.

I think it was originally a 70s house and renovation occurred 2000, the High ceilings and dark beams were
Definitely 70’s. The renovation was nice, shane they didn’t spend money fixing the drainage and moisture problems

This house where I live would probably be about $500,000 US I think. Interesting place. I thought it was funny at 3:30 about the pool table, it’s like no, how about an arcade! That’s what I want in my mansion lol

This is really beautiful I love the large rooms. I think maybe they want to rebuild though because it is very dark inside. Floors, cabinets, etc. some rooms with no windows. Natural light is such a big thing these days so that my be the reason. Still a shame all that work to build and now be torn down only 2 decades later. Great video Ethan! Of course be yourself that is why we all watch you!!

Hey! What’s up back at ya, Ethan! :D The house that keeps on going. The woodwork, the large rooms, all the windows and mirrors. A pretty house. I wonder if the house this one replaced also flooded? What’s with all the flooded high value homes up there?? What a shame.
PLEASE. I know you’re going to live forever. Lol! But you Don’t want to be hauling around oxygen. Totally not sexy. Ha. Please. Black mold is what you smelled in that bedroom; it was growing in the corner. That fan was blowing it through the air-yes, I know, I’m mothering you again-BUT I lived somewhere the black mold was under new flooring and in the walls. I breathe better once we figured it out and got out of there, but I still have trouble. Black mold is Not worth wrecking the rest of your life. We love you, and your work to bring us the vids. But I care more about you. This is your constant enterprise. You Must put a mask on that handsome face. It can shine before and after the walkthroughs. Ok?? PLease????
    Luvya!

Kim in east Texas I have a bone dry basement, Long Island. No water issues. Depends where you live. Likely there's a high water table under that house based on the flood line.

    • @Bajaheat

It probably didn’t flood until it was abandoned and power was cut which made sump pump inoperable

This home was really nice, Adored the fireplaces, at the start Ethan the statue next to the fireplace is a religious statue maybe Hindu, Buddhist or similar I think..the tiles were a bit yucky.. I understand why they tear down a house, even though on the surface it looks good there is hidden damage . More money than sense sometimes but then we just see the surface. I'm so glad you filmed this house before it's gone..@7:07 that toilet water level inside the bowl is the same level we have in Australia, FIRST one EVER I have seen. Your toilet water levels in the bowl are half way up and looks like the toilet is blocked in America, Canada I'm not sure about.. I've always wondered why.? Great explore Ethan Kind thoughts from Australia 😷😘🦘🐨😇
