To me it seems like (if it really was an actual crash and not a staged one) main throttle got somewhat stuck ( so the pilot cant reduce throttle/lift) meaning he had no other option other then to crashland. If that was the case he should've taken his time and done a plane like landing on asphalt but he might've panicked.

Still they make millions from those shows and that might've gotten them to news aswell which would've been some great advertising, also if the chopper was already going to be trashed they might've gotten it basically for free. What kind of risk to the pilot? You think they would leave the pilot in there for the crashing scene? You think it was even a single shot?
@@harlisviikmae6240 pilots don't use a throttle to achieve lift in a helicopter, it's called the collective. and if it was stuck pilots use "auto rotations" to achieve favorable crash landings.

This is basically a forza horizon showcase event:
It looks bad ass, a car is racing against some other crazy vehicle and you have a 100% percent chance of winning but it makes it look like a close finish
Forza horizon even has a top gear event, much harder than the showcases but still

The helicopter was so ashamed of the defeat that it initiated "self- distruct mode" and crashed into ground.

@@factorypilot99 From the looks of it... probably went too sharp into a banked turn like that. Lost too much altitude too quickly and couldn't arrest the descent in time. That, or they misjudged a very risky maneuver.
As some already mentioned in other comments: The cobra is known for "locking in" as many incidents at the army have shown.
There is a reason they use a newer model.

I saw that pause mid-air aswell. Either too aggressive in trying to swing it around or some wind caught him, left him at the same bank angle and when he realised he was too low, atleast he tried to sit it on it's ass, last second.

@@greysky65 For me, he thinks that he' can do whatever he want with the cobra/apache, He simply forget that it is simply a thing created by man and has limitation. He's ego went too far flying too low and forgot that maneuvering the helicopter need to descend (nose dive what we ordinary people think) a couple of meters in order to turn around.

Met the pilot at the Steve McQueen Boys Republic charity car show in Chino, CA several years ago.
Great guy, very laid back, ex Army Vietnam Vet,does aerial camera footage for movies, and helo rides at big charity events.
Flew a few thousand of sorties in Vietnam, saved alot of guys flying the cobra gunship.
God blessed him and told him It just wasn't his time yet...🙏🏼🙏🏼

As someone who works on helicopters, I could feel something break with those hard turns 😬 is it capable? Of course. Should they? Most definitely not.
I mean, that is an AH-1, and there are plenty of vids of them surviving worse in combat, so its likely pilot error.

Filming the movie Twilight Zone in 1982 a UH1 (Huey) crashed and killed 3, injured 6.
Vic Morrow and 2 children. The movie production continued. And it was released with most of that scene included.

Only bad thing was the maps were too small for the jets, but it was ok for the choppers.
I especially loved the AH & UH-1s.

@M J On the Russian KA-50 the blades are ejected first, then the seat.
To low to the ground probably, also the chopper wasn't level when it started to fall. So may have been more dangerous to eject. Military choppers are pretty strong, as you can see the cabin was still fully intact.

Seems like he tried to do a sharp turn, but he didn't have enough momentum too and he stalled.
Retreating blade stall. He probably had too much momentum bleed in a short amount of time.
Lyle Faraday Eh, no. Retreating blade stall occurs at the high end of a helicopter's (speed) performance envelope, which he wasn't even approaching. You can actually read the NTSB report, and the pilot said that the controls froze up. I don't know if that's true, either, but oh well. He was dealing with an underslung rotor system that may not have had the control authority and out-maneuvered his own capabilities. Not a bad guess on your part, though!

It was insufficient altitude for the attempted maneuver. Ground effect bled some power and made the aircraft less responsive as he tried to pull out and there was not enough altitude margin to regain control.

Kudos to the engineers who designed the strength and safety features of that cockpit. The pilot "walked away" from that destructive crash.
Because it was so close to the ground, had it been a fall from higher, I doubt they’d survive. Also do we know for a fact they survived? They never showed the interior shot when the crash happened and we never see the pilot talk after the crash….
