The fact that the sound that plays when you are going into a dream gets even more and more distorted and uncanny adds to Artificier's sadness from the death of her slugpups and her rage against the scavengers.

The vengeance ending is satisfying, but for me the ascend ending is more poetic. She let go of her wrath and pursue transcendence. Ascending, and finally be free of from her vengeance. Edit: she doesn't truly "ascend" but rather disappear from the world (explanation below)
@@hollowcookie9648 But her doesn't "ascend" doesn't make sense because that is againts her entire journey; letting go of revenge. To quote from TurtleToad: "For Artificer's ending, I'm not really convinced that she an echo as many community members seem to believe. I think that would be antithetical to her journey in the first place of finding all the echoes. If the player chooses to find the echoes, they actively forgo seeking revenge, and instead dedicate themselves to the more difficult path of enlightenment. I think this demonstrates Artificer's will to move on and let go of her anger, which binds her to this world. I think this is reflected in the ending. After seeing her pups again one final time, it was enough for Artificer to finally let go of them and leave this world behind." My theory is that since she doesn't get accepted by the Void worm, she just dissipate from the world instead of Ascending. The only thing left that binds her from the world is a revenge for her pups, but once she let them go she can finally be free from the attachment. But because she's not truly pure, she doesn't ascend but instead vanish.
@@Steven-nq7fx ...What's the difference between ascending and vanishing?? Ascending is just a more fancy term that the ancients used to describe LITERALLY VANISHING FROM THE WORLD.
@@mishagaming1075 It is my theory, so take it with grain of salt. In how I see it, vanishing is an imperfect ascension, but different than being an Echo. She is not pure because of her sins therefore she cannot truly ascend, but she also cannot be an Echo because she has no self-attachment on her. The purpose of going on Pilgrimage is to let go of all she has in the world: Feelings, Possessions, Emotions, etc. If the Ancient was stuck in the world because of their self-attachment (ex. Drainage System Echo saying they still enjoy their world and doesn't want to ascend), it doesn't make sense if Artificer were to turn into an Echo because that is againts the point of her journey. Then again, it's just my theory. If you have a strong argument feel free to prove me wrong.

Good to see the cutscenes play out the way they should. A lot of them were bugged on my end and I could control random things or the characters would stand still after a little One of them I was controlling the scavenger in the scene it was so confusing at first

I like to imagine that the nightmare with the singular scavenger is meant to represent the memory where Artificer finally snapped. She’s trapped in a small room, with no visible way out, and this scav just comes out of nowhere. It may have been taunting her, or maybe even trying to console her. But it didn’t matter anymore. Seeing the face of the species that utterly destroyed her life finally pushed Artificer over the edge, turning the poor scav into her first victim, thus setting off a chain of events that would lead to the eventual massacre that would unfold. (Or maybe I’m just looking too deep into this.)
yeah...honestly thats why the artificer is legitimately heartbreaking and nightmare-inducing..all it takes is one moment and you will go down that hellish slippery slope. Honestly remidns me of Kieran in pokemon scarlet and violet's dlc.
I was so sure that the first slug was gonna be brought up by the scavenger, then you fight/reconcile with them once you find out they're with the leaders in the city So when it got stabbed through the head I was quite shocked
@@flutefox3177 the arti cutscenes are generated on the spot rather than being premade recordings, so sometimes some details don't happen. what usually happens is that the first slugpup hangs onto the pearl and gets a spear to the head for it, but since this pup dropped it in a panic, the scavs didn't continue the assault. the shaking of the screen while it fades to black implies that the rain is about to come, and that the slugpup died to that instead
I had a slug pup for 17 cycles and lost it to a scavenger who threw a bomb at me and knocked it off a cliff I than went as survivor to kill the entire scavenger population this was before downfall with a mod that added small slugcats that you could carry around.
in a different timeline, blue slugpup becomes chieftain instead of mom. But for real, since both the slugpups died within the same cycle, wouldn't they just wake up in a shelter with their mother as if nothing happened? Like the blue slugpup is gonna wake up and say, "yeah taking that pearl was a bad idea so I'm not gonna do that anymore", and by the time when they approach that very same scavenger toll things would go much more smoothly though the mom would be wondering why blupup is so skittish around scavengers now. If the artificer wasn't so insistent in killing the scavengers and died that cycle like her kids she would have woken up right beside them. its like how if you have slugpups of your own, you'd just commit self deletus to start over if one of them happens to die.
@@themushroominside6540 I feel like the concept of waking up again is more-or-less tied to the timeline and dens. Since we play as Artificer, in this timeline she went to sleep after her pups died, thus ‘removing’ them from the timeline. If she let herself die she most likely would’ve woken up besides her pups again; but instead she let her anger destroy her and ‘locked’ her pups into an unfortunate death. That’s why she sees them one final time in the Void Sea, since they’ve effectively been ‘crossed out’ by their mother’s retaliation against the Scavengers instead of letting herself be killed by them to wake up near her pups. There’s also a chance that Artificer didn’t actually KNOW about that quirk of their universe, since she might not have actually ever died before.
I didn't realise I was the one controlling the blue pup in that dream, so it just stood there admiring the pearl and immediately got stabbed in the head...
3:14 Imagine if you surrendered the pearl the game gave you an alternate ending where instead of facing off against the chieftain he instead sends his _ultimate warrior_ to challenge you in a duel to the death instead, and now the Artificer is forced to fight and kill her own pup now all grown up. Perhaps the cutscene would show that she didn't even realize it was her pup until removing its mask. That would be dark as hell, it would be perfect.
Yeah at first I was like “oh, so it’s not gonna show the scene of the scavenger killing the kid? That’s a little weird, it’s a very important detail is it not?” But this idea is so fucking dark I love it
Here's basically the whole story from what I've gathered: Artificer used to live in the Garbage Wastes with her 2 children. They lived their cycles peacefully together. Until one cycle, they had to pass a scavenger toll. Artificer and the green slugpup went across smoothly, but the blue slugpup noticed something... shiny. The blue slugpup stole one of the pearls without Arti noticing. The scavengers noticed this however and took it as offence and murdered the slugpup. Because of this, the Artificer and her remaining pup were seen as enemies and starting attacking. They almost got away but one explosive got a little too close to the Artificer and the green slugpup, when it detonated it sent both of them flying, however the slugpup landed in a pool of leeches, and they dragged her to the bottom, drowning her. When the massacre started (beginning of Artificer campaign) the Artificer started getting dreams of the past. Except as the slaughter continued, including any poor creature who was in her way died. The dreams became more like nightmares, like Vultures appearing in dreams attacking them. But once the Scavenger Chieftain was killed. Then all dreams from then were nightmares, turning once peaceful memories into an inescapable purgatory. I like to believe that these nightmares play because the Artificer had forgotten what this was all about, revenge, but she turned into a massacre. So now her nice dreams are replaced by a room with a poor scavenger, becoming the next victim. But as the Artificer finds more Echoes, she feels remorse. The scavengers are afraid of her, there was no point in fighting anymore. She then saught out the Echoes, and ascended, except, she couldn't let go of her rage. So she didn't ascend, but rather vanished. Forever.
I massacre scavs in any campaign. They ain't deserve any remorse considering they lose a single pearl and murder something that's very clearly a baby. I'm not sure what the hell they expected to happen after they murdered the children of something with an infinite arsenal of explosives.
Considering dreams have power in Rain World, I think the nightmares might be the world’s way of saying “You’ve gone too far, and we cannot forgive you.”
I have to disagree with you on that one, sadly artificer becomes an echo because she still holds her wrath against the scavengers, you cant ascend while feeling wrath or hatred to another
@@IHaveNoValueLook at Artificer's ascension art, and then Saint's ascension art. No, I think Arti did manage to ascend- she let go at the very last moment.
it makes sense, considering that turning weapons into explosives costs food pips it would seem that her explosives likely have a biological element to them (perhaps her saliva or some other secretion is explosive or something) it's possible that she or one of her ancestors was purposed for creating explosives (or at least a chemical that just happens to be explosive) and that's why she has those abilities after all, being a purposed organism seems to be the excuse given for the odd abilities of Spearmaster and Rivulet, Hunter was purposed (despite being pretty basic in terms of abilities), and it seems plausible that Saint was too. the only slugcats that seem to be natural are Survivor and Monk who are definitely the two most basic slugcats (I didn't mention Gourmand since while Gourmand is likely natural his odd abilities in gameplay seem to be a product of his campaign being a story being told by the other slugcats, thus resulting in some exaggerations), therefore it seems reasonable to explain any odd abilities of slugcats as them being purposed in some way
@Eclipsed_Embers Actually, Slugcats in general are all purposed organisms or were descended from one. Apparently, their original purpose was to clean out pipes or whatnot. Why some of them have different abilities can be attributed to either artificial changes in biology (like with Spearmaster), or evolutionary changes over the years descending on the environment they lived in.
ironically i didnt learn this is how the dreams were meant to go until i saw this video ahaha. most of the dream sequences i had ruined by a vulture coming from nowhere and throwing off the mood of the entire thing and its actually pretty funny. From stealing artificer to literally distracting the scavengers from the slugpup. then i completed the campaign before seeing the slugpup drown and artificer/scavenger killing each other thing.
just watch a streamer reaching the second dream, then at the end of the dream a vulture fucking spawn, now he's convinced Arti is seeking revenge on the vultures lmao
i wonder why the scavengers were attacking in the first place, i don't know how far in the timeline demoman is but its sad to see the scavengers just go after the slugcats like this.
Generally speaking scavengers are territorial, they have their own dens, patrols and passage guardians, 2:31 is such a place because of the skull the little slugpup was climbing too. In the next dream you can see the white slugpup holding a pearl, which scavengers love, so the fact that the family snuck by their gate was one thing, but then stole a pearl was another. The next dream after that because the family had still crossed without payment so they continued to attack. This is a thing that can happen in normal playthroughs if you don't pay the fine. Its a reputation thing.
Thank you. I only got to see like half of these because sometimes when I got into a shelter it would just be stuck on a loading screen forever so I'd have to restart the game. it seems like they fixed that bug a few days later though.
@ladno1342 I like to imagine that arti was a parent that wanted to give their child a bit more freedom to move around, maybe she's such an apex predator in her environment it didn't pose much of a concern until finally came a day she was completely outnumbered and taken off guard.
Yeah um, I threw my pups into the bottomless pit in the 2nd dream. Pretty much ended the dream quick. 🤣 It's ok they're not real they're not real they're not reallll You can actually control one of the characters in the dreams: 1st dream: One of the slugpups 2nd dream: Artificer 3rd dream: None, IIRC 4th dream: Slugpup that was left behind. You'll either get speared or like this video, left to die in the rain/scavs. I think you can control the slugpup because it might be Artificer hoping and coping that there was _some_ way that the slugpup escaped. There's none. 5th dream: I've actually finished the "job" before I even saw this, but I think you can't control anyone because of the importance and impact of the scene. Like goddamn, being knocked out while your slugpup is drowned by leeches. 6th dream+: Apparently you control the helpless scavenger? I didn't even reach the 5th dream before finishing Artificer's campaign.
i only got the first three and then finished dawg i didnt even know how the slugpups died i just wanted to obliterate scavs for an entire campaign because i dont like them
When I got the dream where it's just you and a scavenger, There weren't any spears that I could find, just a single rock. the scavenger wasn't armed. I killed it with blunt force trauma and by mauling it, and it couldn't do anything about it. I wasn't even sure what was going on, I just felt that wild, primal fear predators feel as they defend themselves. It felt very profound.
I like how the melody slowly turns deeper with each dream and gets completely distorted on the dream of the pups death. In later dreams its not as deep anymore but stays distorted, like the way arti chose to attempt getting over it made her more mad and lost over time.
Jesus. The one where the baby drops into the water and is drowned by leeches is genuinely brutal, and just.. .really effective cinematically. I never saw that one on my playthrough... Think I beat the campaign too quickly.
Fun fact, (mostly unrelated but) Artificer is featured in dreams apology video. It's in the thirst trap section, and at the very start. You see someone with an arti pfp.

I beat Artificer’s campaign in a measly 11 cycles (not blindly, I knew of my destination and all that.) so I’m actually gonna catch myself up on the dreams that I missed (aka, probably most of them, minus the first 2)
Scavs killing a sluppy out of spite or cruelty is actually accurate. I tried to pass the Outer Expanse scav toll with my mint pup and they killed me, so my pup jumped into the water and swam past. The scavengers hunted them with special effort and stabbed them in the water💀
very sad the first dies to scavs then the second falls off artificer's back and is drowned by leeches so its understandable why artificer hates scavs so much
tbh I thought the slug pup that fell into the water was blue and if it was blue then it could’ve tied into rivulets story since artificer did a explosion jump making a explosion noise and the rivulet’s campaign starting with a explosion sound before we see rivulet falling onto the ground, however I don’t personally believe that rivulet is the slugpup that fell into the water because 1. it’s fully grown, 2. it has axolotl fins, 3. it’s blue and not green, and 4. in the artificer ascension ending we see the artificer reunite with the souls of his dead children, however since the flashbacks are like, memories and can’t be fully remembered the slugpup could’ve have axolotl fins, which could add a lot of lore but then again, the ascension ending exists, and there are major time gaps between multiple campaigns.
(Spoiler Warning) Theories I’ve seen that could explain Artificer’s ascension ending. 1. Arti’s children were only pups and as said somewhere else, they may have lacked worldly attachments like adults do, somehow being exempt from being trapped in the cycle, which would explain why they showed up in the void for one last goodbye. 2. Artificer’s dreams were only from her perspective and her children somehow survived to ascend(?). Notice that she cant be 100% sure if the scavs killed her first pup as she left them behind, out of view, and if the second one got leeched as she was incapacitated by the explosion with her eyes closed. Her Dreams/Nightmares were fueled and shaped by the guilt and rage she feels from that day. 3. Ascension allows a true escape from the cycle. As you ascend, you notice a lot of yourselves swimming by you towards the light. This could be interpreted as all your other (successful) selves from other timelines finally coming together into one singularity or maybe just escaping toward the same goal. This could be the case for the slugpups but not for Arti. She was wholly doomed the moment she indulged in vengeance against the scavengers. (The problem here is that if the pups WERE in the cycle, they’d wake up next to their mother again and would either somehow survive or be separated from her yet still persist. Maybe all their paths pointed towards ascension and that Artificer is still doomed to being an echo no matter how you put it. Though this doesn’t take into account the option of defeating the Scav King and forever being locked into the plane of existence) This is confusing but maybe, there’s actually a timeline out there where she’s happy and her children are fine and well. All timelines and ascensions could be their own. Some of you are successful, some of you are not and others are REALLY not. 4. Given the void wish theory, Arti got her desires like the other slugcats upon ascending (and failing to). Whether this was actually real or just a dream as they cease existence(?) is up for interpretation. 5. Rain World’s ascension logic is convoluted and not meant to be understood unless it serves a purpose. (Bet even the creators don’t have an answer lol) Most if not all these theories are flawed and we just gotta take it for what’s seen on screen lol. (Also gave Arti She/Her pronouns if the MSC Dating Sim is anything to go by)
Love the theories, this community is filled with journalist majors comparable to the classics, coming up with highly thought up ideas and explanations, and we all use a cat dating simulator as a baseplate
Since you control some of these dreams the canon is somewhat fluid and up to the player. Some people have said they killed artificer when controlling the Scav-this could just be a vision of an inevitable future.
@@emirkara8660 pretty sure the scavengers were the ones who knocked it into the water, then it was drowned by the leeches - making it the scavenger's fault.

tbh the impression i get from this is that arti is a shitty mom, she totally coulda grabbed her first kid and brought em over the fence but just didnt for whatever reason
They were being chased so there probably wasn’t enough time to grab them. Arti was also most likely panicking and could have thought that they had both children with them realising they didn’t after it was too late. Or hoped they could make it over themselves.
@@-_Shadow.Milk.Cookie_- i mean, even if so, she kinda left her idiot child unattended while she was pissing off the scavengers, who are willing to kill you if you piss em off
I'm really late to this but THIS! Arti totally had a tiny window of time to save her other kid, but they didn't. They also could have just grabbed both of their kids, since you can hold two pups at the same time, but no they just straight up left their other kid to die when they not only could have easily brought it to saftey as well, but also didn't even bother to quickly run over and get it before the scavs came and killed it. You could guess that Arti just decided that risking getting killed by scavengers to save their own kid just wasn't worth it to them.
Peoples will do anything but blame the actual culprits instead of victim. No, she was too busy thinking about finding a shelter to survive the rain, literally on 4th and 5th dreams you can see Rain is about to start. But sure, whatever, ignore all of this for a dumb shit y'all made up in your heads.
I’m actually kinda mad that I didn’t get to see all of the dreams before I killed the scav king, because now it only plays the nightmares and I never got to see the cutscenes the intended way T^T
One of the slugpups took a shiny pearl from the scavengers and they started to chase them down and shot them with a spear the 2nd one fell into the water and leeches got them and the reason why artificer didn’t go back (exit and rejoin) is because of story reasons
there’s a few different theories to why the pups dont just reincarnate next to arty: 1) The pups were so young that they hadn’t yet formed any attachments to the world and ascended when they died 2) The pups are only dead from arty’s pov- they woke back up again but in a separate timeline
When I found a slug pup, I lost it to leeches similarly, even swam down to try to save it, no use, it was cruel, man.

Lol when you get to play as the slugpup who gets left behind I managed to kill so many of the scavengers that they ran away before it ended.
in a different timeline, blue slugpup becomes chieftain instead of mom.

@@themushroominside6540well if you saw both of your children die infront of you you would want to get revenge right?
That would be dark as hell, it would be perfect.
thats an absolutely insane idea, i love it-
And then after she finds out it was her pup, she kills the chieftain, all the scavengers, and then grieves near the pup's body.

same, it's either that or they take an eternity to load
I actually managed to escape as the pup in the fourth memory, so it was really weird to me that they just disappeared by the fifth one.
Here's basically the whole story from what I've gathered:
Artificer used to live in the Garbage Wastes with her 2 children.
I have to disagree with you on that one, sadly artificer becomes an echo because she still holds her wrath against the scavengers, you cant ascend while feeling wrath or hatred to another
I believe Artificer became an echo
@@IHaveNoValueLook at Artificer's ascension art, and then Saint's ascension art. No, I think Arti did manage to ascend- she let go at the very last moment.
So, Artificer WAS an pyrotechnic expert before the lose of its pups than just being one out of rage.
Yeah,so slugcats have the same intelligence as a scav? Which is around the intelligence of an homo erectus
it makes sense, considering that turning weapons into explosives costs food pips it would seem that her explosives likely have a biological element to them (perhaps her saliva or some other secretion is explosive or something)
it's possible that she or one of her ancestors was purposed for creating explosives (or at least a chemical that just happens to be explosive) and that's why she has those abilities
after all, being a purposed organism seems to be the excuse given for the odd abilities of Spearmaster and Rivulet, Hunter was purposed (despite being pretty basic in terms of abilities), and it seems plausible that Saint was too. the only slugcats that seem to be natural are Survivor and Monk who are definitely the two most basic slugcats (I didn't mention Gourmand since while Gourmand is likely natural his odd abilities in gameplay seem to be a product of his campaign being a story being told by the other slugcats, thus resulting in some exaggerations), therefore it seems reasonable to explain any odd abilities of slugcats as them being purposed in some way
@Eclipsed_Embers Actually, Slugcats in general are all purposed organisms or were descended from one. Apparently, their original purpose was to clean out pipes or whatnot.
Why some of them have different abilities can be attributed to either artificial changes in biology (like with Spearmaster), or evolutionary changes over the years descending on the environment they lived in.
There's also a variation of the last one where you control the scavenger and the artificer is controlled by AI.
You can even kill artificer.
ironically i didnt learn this is how the dreams were meant to go until i saw this video ahaha. most of the dream sequences i had ruined by a vulture coming from nowhere and throwing off the mood of the entire thing and its actually pretty funny.
Was that skurry?
i wonder why the scavengers were attacking in the first place, i don't know how far in the timeline demoman is but its sad to see the scavengers just go after the slugcats like this.

4th dream: Slugpup that was left behind. You'll either get speared or like this video, left to die in the rain/scavs. I think you can control the slugpup because it might be Artificer hoping and coping that there was _some_ way that the slugpup escaped. There's none.

In first dream with fighting scav I was controling scav for some reason. I killed arti

tbh I thought the slug pup that fell into the water was blue and if it was blue then it could’ve tied into rivulets story since artificer did a explosion jump making a explosion noise and the rivulet’s campaign starting with a explosion sound before we see rivulet falling onto the ground, however I don’t personally believe that rivulet is the slugpup that fell into the water because 1. it’s fully grown, 2. it has axolotl fins, 3. it’s blue and not green, and 4. in the artificer ascension ending we see the artificer reunite with the souls of his dead children, however since the flashbacks are like, memories and can’t be fully remembered the slugpup could’ve have axolotl fins, which could add a lot of lore but then again, the ascension ending exists, and there are major time gaps between multiple campaigns.
(Spoiler Warning)
Theories I’ve seen that could explain Artificer’s ascension ending.
Though this doesn’t take into account the option of defeating the Scav King and forever being locked into the plane of existence)
This is confusing but maybe, there’s actually a timeline out there where she’s happy and her children are fine and well.
