  • Hi! this video is a presentation of my ideas for my rain world original character the Beholder and their campaign!
    even though my editing skills may not be the best I hope you find this video entertaining!
    All drawings were done by me, sound effects are either from random copyright free videos or taken from rainworld itself.

    Fun facts
    So you probably noticed grey wind doesn’t have one of their arms, thats because their original arm was stolen a long time ago. Their original arm can still be found in necropolis, being a two hand item that slows you down and makes you sink. I didn’t want to mention it in the video bec i felt like it would ruin the mood of the necropolis.
    The S button would be the top button of the right section of the controller.
    I was originally going to name the character swabbie, but thought beholder fitted the story better and decided to leave the original as a fun nick name that grey wind uses.
    The beholders design was inspired by the sea bunnies! Best animal.
    The weird tentacles that extend out of the beholders face are inspired by the sea cucumber.
    The pink and blue color scheme is supposed to be a nod to rivulet. ( feel like this one is pretty obvious but still- )
    The beholder actually went through a lot of design changes. The character originally was going to have a more slug like tail as well as two pairs of long wiskers, with a very light blue base with dark blue dots, then it changed to pink with green dots, then blue dots , and then the design changed to the current one.
    UI and CW originally wore yellow instead of green, I changed it because it would complete a triadic combo with with the other 4 vanilla iterators.
    The overall vibe of thalassophobia was inspired by subnautica.
    The characters ability to breath underwater was inspired by my own INDIGNATION at the fact they state that rivulet can breath underwater when they CANT WHY IS IT WRITTEN “breaths underwater,(…)” THATS SO ANNOYING AAAA
    the festering burrow may have been inspired by the floor “the womb” from the game the binding of Isaac.
    The way the festering burrow is its own entity who is against you, may be inspired by the tunnel from the coraline book.
    The Necropolis is also a reference to a floor in the binding of Isaac of the same name, as well as a level of the upcoming ( at the release of this video ) little nightmares 3.
    I actually had to change the names of two regions, the glooming dunes where originally called the floor, which as you may already know, is a subregion of metropolis. The other one was subaqueous thicket, which was previously called the kelp forest, which is the same name of the very subnautica biome i took inspiration from!
    The orange fluid Grey wind makes for the beholder is pretty much the same as the LCL from neon genesis evangelion.
    Something i ended up noticing as i worked on the art is just how much it changed during development! Try comparing some of the illustrations of the beholder from the start with the ones shown later on, goes to show how much time this whole thing actually took to make!
    The stalkers design is probably inspired by the big spider from the game limbo. As well as the teacher from little nightmares 2 with its long stretchy neck.
    A fun idea i ended only thinking about much later was a flash ability that can stun enemies! But i think the character has enough going on as is.

      I had subnautica on my mind when I saw the thumbnail, and now I see that this was inspired by it! Everything underwater and mildly scary will remind me of subnautica.
      I would rather hug a leviathan than deal with these creatures.

      I have a friend that always wanted a full underwater campaign in Rain World and i always answered that underwater Combat and movement is not deep enought for it to be fun. Glad to seen this character solve those issues with his own mechanics. I wish this video gets the views it desserves since it clearly took you a lot of time

      @@interro588well it could be that they are very closed off, and since they never communicate, that's the reason other iterators find them to be mean. Them releasing the rot pictures could be telling others "hey, pebbles is sick, we should probably find a cure for the rot". But thats just my thoughts

      Kinda makes sense why C.W would make Rivulet, full of energy, cute puppy dog eyes, doesn’t need to eat a lot, and can easily survive a pretty long time outside of C.W chambers due to the fact that he can breathe in water longer.

    I love how in the ascension ending UI’s pose stays the same. It’s not a gentle embrace. UI looks as though they are preaching, rather than reaching out

    It's awesome to finally see Wind and Innocence used in a concept.
    Wind and Innocence are basically the antithesis of each other. Wind is basically the parent of the whole local group, evidently being the most mature. He was the one who called out Innocence and reported what happened to Pebbles. Innocence on the other hand, is basically the closest the game gets to a straight up villain. Literally bullies a cancer patient. Leaks the pebbles videos onto the iterator group chat. It's ironic that the worst of the iterators is the one called 'Unparalleled Innocence.' Wind is based though.
    It would be amazing if this was turned into a mod, though it'd take a seriously long time. The modding community is getting there though, so hopefully your concept will be playable one day. Amazing ideas!

      @@scootermcpeanuts6699 Well at least Harassment only ever does "good" things, unlike Innocence.
      Harassment is the one who sent Hunter to revive Moon. And the only issue there was that Hunter got the Rot. And if we're being really speculative, than the failure in his Hunter modification, could've very well led him to succeed with Rivulet. It's unconfirmed, but it'd make complete sense if Rivulet was modified by NSH since it's clearly shown he cared about Moon a lot more than any of the other Iterators by the fact he was the one who sent Hunter. So it's not to farfetched to think that he'd try again, but with better results this time.
      All Innocence does is "haha, look at funny cancer patient guys!!1"

    I hope you make this into a mod someday if you end up wanting too. Because an entirely aquatic slug cat sounds like a really cool way to play.

      there is one in the works! rain world Azure Tapestry is currently in development and both the scugs in the mod are aquatic! There's Atoll, a fully aquatic (has a breath meter outside of water) rivulet-like slug with focus on movement and a secondary unnamed slugcat who's like a water brawler, he can punch enemies and use rubbish but not spears! ^^

      I made it, but you can't use it. But all you have to do is get the dress my slugcat mod and the varmint mod and make it look like it, then boom! You'll have it. It will not be able to use the mouth-spearing ability though 😅.

    This has to be one of, if not THE most in-depth and well-written campaigns I've seen.
    The character and creature design is incredibly unique yet fitting for the world (don't even get me started on how HORRIFYINGLY AMAZING the Stalker is), and the environments all hit several key notes that makes the original regions of Rain World work, plus their own unique ways of getting past the "no rain" issue.
    The cutscenes and drawings were also top-notch... I felt so much emotion looking at the little fella, and I was astounded by the animation unveiling Beholder's siphon gimmick.
    Above all, while I admit I'd love to see this become a full mod, what I want more than anything is to pet the poor scug.

    Goodness gracious the design for the stalker is Terrifying. If this was in the game and I saw that thing’s neck creeping around a corner I would just close rain world dude that thing is METAL.
    In all seriousness though this is one of the most inventive and viscerally creative fan made rain world concepts I have ever seen. Bravo! Also i love how you portrayed UI’s relationship with the beholder. Poor little scug :(

    There should be some tweaks to the Beholders gameplay should you decide to use
    jolly co-op to bring them into survivors/monks/hunters campaign.
    My suggestion: fishbowl helmet to prevent suffocating on air and some kind of disability object (crutchs, wheelchair, rarefracton cell, Etc)

    I love the atmosphere these videos bring! Even though it's just:
    1. a story retelling
    and
    2. a concept that is very unlikely to be developed on

    This whole concept is amazing! I love how the overseer eye has so much use in game, and isn't just a useless feature. The biomes were really unique, and I feel like the end-cycle events were great workarounds for the "too deep for the rain" thing. The story itself was even more unique, with two 'new' iterators and the first time we've seen one being genuinely abusive towards their creations. Great job Fragil, you're really good at making these concepts!

    I love that this references the broadcast discussing UI sending rot images to the local group! little unaware slugcat being behind it all is kinda funny, but at the same time, the loyalty ending was heartbreaking - I assumed that the beeping was because of Beholder running out of breath, but the reveal that UI had mewnt to kill them anyway made it even sadder :(
    I doubt Rivulet was made by an iterator at all, and rather, the entire slugcat species just evolved to have gills, or were at most modified by iterators along the line, but it's highly plausible that Riv came across CW/GW at least once - perhaps he was even the one that gave Ruffles the mark of communication, or even the pearl - because they are implied to go on iterator expeditions all the time

    I had an iterator oc's named "Distant Hope Within Submerged Dreams" and another named "Seven Elden Cogs, Ancient Frontier". I always thought of one being underwater and other being built on a nearby island. I could never think of region ideas though and this video has given me inspiration. The concept is also amazing and I love you videos. I may or may not return with my own ideas. Thank You.

    Idea: in rivulets, you can find the beholders new eye if you ascended as it, and bring it to moon or 5p, who will give directions to chasing wind. You can show it to chasing wind, who will be very happy and explain to the rivulet why he created him, who the beholder was, and will keep the eye. Chasing wind will fill his tank with the same liquid that the beholder had, allowing him to rest, eat, and swim back out the chamber.

    The concept of the slugcat themself is already amazing but the first ending was so well timed and animated that I could feel the dread when the screen went black. Very well done!

    Calling it Thalassophobia as you explore the deep ocean is a cool detail! Thalassophobia, in case anyone is wondering, is the name of the Phobia/fear of the deep ocean. I actually have Thalassophobia myself, and find this project really neat!

    another concept:
    The joyful
    a slugcat who has a pair of wings and arms and It has no legs and takes place right after sliver of straw died. This makes it so that it can't stand up after landing and can only crawl at gourmand's tired walk speed. It can't take off without a ledge to jump off of because it weighs a bit. its color palate is aqua and gold. It starts off in a iterator called "sliver of straw". It is tasked with delivering the tipple affirmative to another iterator called seven red suns via a pearl so that the info is kept secretive. (This is also the pearl found in chimney). The joyful also can not swim because of their wings, but their breath time is long af which lets them climb out of the water if there is a solid floor in the bottom. It's airspeed is as fast as rivulet underwater using rarefaction cell. It starts off at the retaining wall around sliver of straw and makes it's way on the other side with the help of a light grey overseer and gets to the "testing grounds". this region is flooded half way with water because seven red suns believes that creatures need to be able to swim to be able to ascend(hes an idiot). Ambush predators are what lurk nearly everywhere around these parts. (bah im too lazy rn ill add later) ;/

    Absolutely amazing and such a clever idea by contributing two very unknown iterators into the story I absolutely adored it!!!!! I enjoyed how u connected the dots with how unparalleled Innocence took the pictures of pebbles for the group! And how Chasing Wind made Rivulet after meeting The beholder! Since Rivulet was purposed but no one knows who exactly purposed them I found it very creative for you to have them be Chasing Wind's creation! Especially considering how the pearl Rivulet carries mentions that they contents of it are "old" iterator blueprints for moon. (Which I'd guess would be Chasing Wind's attempt to help Moon after hearing her conditions) It makes more sense now knowing that Chasing Wind is an archaic iterator model!! Amazing story telling and extremely creative and unique ways to incorporate those ideas into the story. Hope this becomes a mod some day, I would love to experience the Beholder's journey myself!

    I am vibrating (happily) at this amazing concept scug aughhhh
    I've always loved sea creatures and how pretty and horrifying the sea can be so watching this video makes me wonder why I've never wondered about having an entirely sea based area in the world of rain! How each area has their own unique way of killing you, the land segment and creatures. Though I'm a bit confused on how Beholder survives above the rain clouds in the first two endings, maybe the rain wasn't drawn there?
    I love the story and how some messengers can be sent by force whether they liked it or not, poor beholder had to deal with a particularly bad iterator.
    I wonder how the void in the sea works? Is it seperated like oil and water? I also liked how you made Beholder reject their dream sequence, and just ascended as is without it. Glad the void realized that its ascendee was upset and just let em pass! I wonder if theres any sunken guardians too, just half buried in the ground.
    Chasing/Grey Wind looks like an old dude, maybe one of the first modeled iterators? They're built pretty low to the ground compared to the other iterators (assuming they didn't already collapse here).
    Finally, THE SCUG DESIGN i camnot express how much i LOVE the spear mouth, it reminds me a lot of how Sea Angels feed as well and their floppy lookin legs. They are adorable! The animations make them all the more lively too.
    Extra note YES SHARK LIZARD I LOVE THEM TOO RAGHHH
    Can't wait to see what other concepts you can think of next, the rotten and this video are some of my absolute favourite rw scug videos. Keep it up :]

    Incredible video, I mean this with no offense, or comparison to him but this is nearly on, if not already on the tier of development of Daszombes' concepts, so I have *no* idea why you would be worried about your editing skills. The little animations and all of the drawings and thoughts here are fabulous, and I would love to see more theories of this caliber! In general, I think Rain World and mod concepts like this are amazing, even if a lot of them probably won't come to fruition or aren't intended to. Exemplary work!!

    I love seeing original slugcat concepts! I’m working on one myself! >:)
    The deep ocean and exploring it is one of my favorite subjects, so this is SUPER cool for me! You should be proud of the effort that went into this!

    funny theory I have: I think the Tormenter had the Rotten as a pet/friend before it turned into the rotten we know today and simply just wanted to cure the Rotten so it sent the Beholder to retrieve information about the Rot to somehow develop a cure to it

      Based on the conversation between SRS and CW at the beginning ( 0:47 ) I'm guessing the Tormenter (Unparalleled Innocence) just hates Five Pebbles. CW did say that Unparalleled Innocence sent a messenger to spy and take pictures of Five Pebbles having rot.

    Just a few comments from mine, but I think it would be cool if the trauma at the ascension ending start before you begin the cutscene whilst in the in-game void.
    It would make the player think that the beholder cannot actually ascend the first place.
    Then you surprised them with the cutscene triggering right after.

    Absolutely love this the extra end cutscene made me jaw drop irl its a very cute ending i love the beholder aswell very nice design i think it has enough to it without being too overwhelming the only gripe i have is i think from a gameplay perspective you should be able to force point towards your objective but otherwise its nicely thought out insanely well done

    I remember back when I had seen the Rotten concept when my rain world interest was still fresh. It was something new and so well crafted that gave my brain something to chew on! Now with this I feel I may fall right back into the rain world interest, I love your concepts so much and I do hope you'll make more! The art, the storytelling, region building, pace. It's all so well done!

    Two amazing concepts in a row, I would kill to be able to experience this campaign, the extra cutscene at the end gave me the same feeling of amazement some realizations in rainworld itself gave me which is NOT an easy thing to do. Well fucking done.

    I love this! Yes!!! I know they're a pain when you're first starting out but the watery regions in Rain World are the best in the game, and I love the more overtly horrifying tone in this. Plus... some really clever and creative creature designs and unique sounding regions
    Love the end of cycle threats, as well. Super creative and nasty, all in different ways.
    I also really like the idea of the optional side-quest... I kind of have my doubts about ascension after playing Gourmand (please no spoilers for saint lol, I just have a feeling) like... what could be down there that's SOOOO great in comparison if you can find companionship and joy, alive? It's a cruel, cold world, but there are pockets of warmth, and you seem to have found one with this lonely old iterator. I like that it gives you a good reason to traverse those deeper, scarier parts of the world that isn't ascending... that way you see the content, but if you should decide to turn back and continue living your small, happy life with them, you can, and it gets the player to deepen and invest in their own relationship with the character through this quest, because it really does sound like a difficult labour of love to lug it all the way back... Maybe in addition to the Rivulet reveal, this could give another ending, where you become life-long companions, years and years and years melt away, until your iterator friend eventually passes away due to some critical system failure... and if you ever do ascend, the memory of your creator has faded, and instead you are greeted by your iterator friend in the void, welcomed into the afterlife.

    I love this so much, I was already a big fan of the rotten but you went ahead of yourself here! The beholder is incredibly cute, and theres so much attention to detail that im baffled, you even paid attention to giving the iterators different hand types to emphasize how different techniques were used to construct them! I also love the exploration of the simple broadcast from Spearmaster, which is extremely creative and expands rhe simple concept so much!
    10/10, I wanna adopt the beholder

    this is such a cool concept, it's very detailed, quite explored deep and wide, i really love how unique yet rainworldy each idea sounds, and i love the extra cutscene, i would've loved even more details about how the other creatures interact with one another
    if this ever comes to being a real running project, and you find yourself in need of a composer or a sound designer, i'd love to be part of it!

    This gave me an idea for a concept. Megalophobia, with two new slugcats with collars. one really small: parvus (half size of normal scug) and one really big: magna (twice size). Parvus is a small fluffy white slugcat with a small blue collar, they are able to jump really high and able to climb onto ledges two slugcat sizes away. Magna is large and dark brown with a red and white collar, they don't jump very high but just like green and caramel lizards can wind up their body to do a large pounce. They can be played both in pebble's regions and in a new one containing two regions: city & outside. When meeting pebbles: pebs calls parvus weak and small. Pebs calls magna a unit. Moon calls parvus petite and adorable. Moon calls calls magna a unit.

    I got something to say for Jolly Co-op compatibility
    If player 1 is Beholder and player 2 is Rivulet,and both make it to the top of The Gateway alive,what if you get a special ending?
    When the Beholder's eye is about to the explode,the Rivulet quickly pulls it out of his eye socket and throws it off the building!

    I WISH I WATCHED THIS SOONER BEHOLDER IS SUCH A SILLY LITTLE GUY… I plan on pursuing a career in marine biology so a purely underwater campaign is so fun!! I’ve always thought about making my own but always got stuck on the platforming, since water removes that almost entirely. So I think your hazard workaround is a good alternative :D
    Also can I just say I love Chasing Wind’s characterization, they’re so sweet 😭😭😭

    Ok that was amazing. First of all i love the art and presentation beholder is perfect mix of cuteness and eldrich horror.
    But here is some critique (and stuff i would like to see):
    1.Walking under water seems unnecessary, whole idea of pure swimming based slugcat is novel enough to be interesting on its own. No need to make underwater movement more complex.
    2.Old iterator model being constructed under water is not only amaxing idea from iterator lore standpoint, it is also incredibly interesting location. Definitely deserves more attention and separation into multiple subregions (pebbles style)
    3.1st ending is a bit abrupt, no idea how to improve it but giving player some clues about the message and whats in it during the path would be nice. And maybe the final destinatiin should be comm array or sth.
    4.Making multiple run based campaign may result in players being confused (similar to problem with vanilla when players get to depths before getting to pebbles) . Idk how to fix that but maybe gate unlocking acces to chasing wind should be located somewhere near final destination of 1st run. Or maybe player should get more hints. Idk there definitely is a way to do this.
    5.Honestly i like how our main iterator is chasing wind she deserves the spotlight. Unparrarel innocence is pure evil here but whatever i like it.
    6.Festering burrow felt out of place. Could be skipped or remade into small easter egg subregion. As it is now it would left players extremally confused so not a fan of this one.
    7.It would be nice if the void was in some sort of mariana trench, really climatic and would make sense lorewise.
    8.Necropolis could be presented as abandoned research outpost, again would make sense lorewise since it would be one of few instances of void being exposed to the world without drilling sth ancients would definitely want to study.
    That would be all i really love this concept, definitely deserves to be turned into a mod.

    omg i love this so much !!!! i got chills after the first ending. i love your characterization of CW and UI, and i adore the fact that while the beholder feels so separate from the rest of rain world's scugs, it ties itself in really well! i also love how you worked around a rain timer in the ocean, and how unique each region's "rain timer" is! it's clear you put a lot of work and effort into this video and this campaign concept as a whole, and its just wonderful start to finish. ive had my own campaign idea for a while, and i think this video gave me the motivation to make a campaign concept video!

    It would be cool if some sort of underwater echo would stay in necropolis. He would have been swimming far down to the depths to ascend, but he cared so much about studying the ecosystem and wildlife that he became obsessed with dissecting poor creatures. His fate after ascending would be too observe the creatures of the necropolis without having any ability to harm them. This Echo who we will call, "a keen eye and 16 glass pearls" would give the slugcat the karma 10 that chasing wind would normally give at the start of the ascension campaign.

    Some feedback on your amazing concept.
    I could say that the enemies don't have to be lizards, they could just be fish. Since they are purposed organism there's no real necessity to be too far too different from lizards anyway.
    The festering burrow would I think would make more sense to me if it was plant themed instead of flesh themed, however I know the appeal for the flesh theme and maybe that could be used differently, the first thought that comes to mind is the rot. It is not supposed to be here but it fits on the theme, half machine half organic material that grows out of control and consumes. (I would not mind if this feedback is ignored, the original concept is still very awesome)
    I love the mechanics of the slugcat, maybe it's a bit overdesigned aesthetically and it would benefit of a more simple design, but it's still very cute, like a little pink mermaid.
    The cycle mechanic making all animals aggressive is cool, but I feel like the environment should still be the focus. How about this?
    The cycle on land ends with the water vapor precipitating onto land, but we know that Five Pebbles (and to some extent other iterators) suck water into their systems for cooling. Maybe the cycle underwater could end at the moment the systems of the iterators suck all of the water in (Just after the rain would finish falling), making it imperative to find shelter or be dragged by the strong currents and into the pipes. The pipes may not be dangerous to thread when inactive, but certainly all of the water pressure and the bludgeoning against walls would kill. Sticking to walls may be a minimal help, maybe one could manage to crawl to a shelter along the walls, but otherwise one would not be able to outswim the currents. This would give more function to the crawl movement.
    I love the mechanic of ambush predators, I think one should be able to distinguish them in the most minimal way, as in, "maybe the aggressive kelp sways less in the currents"
    The plot-twist in the first ending is phenomenal. I love the concept of a water dweller. I'd love to see this concept made real, it's all amazing.
    The Angler and the hammerhead are my favorites.
