I love both diets, but I tend to eat the nutritarian way in the summer when fruits and veggies are in abundance and more starches, stews, beans in the winter. Also, I find it way easier to feed a family (w/ avid bike riding husband and two teen boys) with more starches. They like it more, gets them lots of easy calories and it's way cheaper.
This makes a lot of sense. I tried the starch solution and I just didn’t feel well after a while, eating so much starch. It was definitely cheaper than any diet I’ve ever eaten so it makes sense for active teens!
I try to go with Dr.Fuhrman but when I get really hungry I am so glad to have Dr. McDougall's recipes because they are quick and fill you up. I greatly admire both Doctors.
What a clear, informative, objective video. Thank you. I lean more towards Dr. Fuhrman but find Dr. Greger's approach to be the most doable - sort of a hybrid of Dr. McDougall's and Dr Fuhrman's.
Having done the Starch Solution for years I found I still had weight and energy issues. However after starting eating nutritarian my energy and frame of mind have lifted outstandingly! Thank you for the comparisons and I fully agree with your assessment! 🤗
Interesting. Thanks for sharing! I started my oil-free WFPB journey only 5 months ago, and still can’t decide between the two. But this really helps. Maybe the Starch Solution is where I am for now, and it can be a stepping stone to the more strict Nutritarian plan. Other than bean pasta, are there really no starches on the Nutritarian plan?
The starch solution works for me the best since I can easily get starchy foods than vegetables here in Pohnpei. Beans, Lentils, Broccoli and such are very hard to find here and so SS for me. We have almost 200 varieties of Yams, about 80 varieties of Bananas, numerous types of Taro and some varieties of potato's and my favorite veggie which is the Bread Fruit. When I was a kid Heart attacks, stroke, cancer and diabetes were very rare and almost unheard of and now they are everywhere on the island. We don't even have a name for heart attack in the native language so we just call it Medek which just translates to Pain. There were two or three people in my village that were overweight and now probably half or more people here in the village are overweight. I'm going to try and get the people here to start eating like they used to in the past to avoid all these unnecessary conditions and cancers so wish me luck. Kalahngan Tom
Great video! I think anytime a book gets too specific and too restrictive, it sets the reader up for failure, especially if said reader is a general layperson. Bottom line, maximize fiber and minimize fat. Folks have spent so much effort focusing on carbs and/or fat, they forget about fiber.
My husband and I have been on a whole food plant based diet since May 2018 for his health. After seeing this video I just bought both books I need more recipes. The Starch Solution has a lot more recipes that I can use. The Eat To Live has a lot of recipes with mushrooms and tofu my husband won’t eat either. Thank you for all the information.
I just discovered your channel. Great and inspiring! You've given me ideas on how to eat more greens by prepping. I've follows McDougall and Forks Over knives plan but still not at top of my game. Will now focus on more nutrient dense per your other videos and see what happens. Keep sharing your thoughts and experience! You're a gem!
not just the differences but also a great summary of both. thank you! great stuff. Im more and more leaning to the nutritarian diet and am watching many of your videos
I kinda feel like ladies do better with starch solution over nutritarian. I feel like i get more week feeling without the starches esp during a certain time of the month. But i am still early in transitioning to plant based from SAD so maybe i just need to starch solution until I'm like really used to plant based. I think starting starch solution and then transitioning into the nutrient dense one could be a good recipe for long term success and that sounds like what you did.
Such a great comparison of the two diets. The starch solution wasn’t a good choice for me, turns out potatoes spike my sugar if eaten daily. I’m going to try Eat to Live❤️ Thanks for the info! Keep it coming!
Cook your potato day before and keep it in the fridge next day heat up your potato and eat .. you can check your b/p before and after .. rice the same way .. look up resistant starch
Great video!! Thank you so much! I follow the starch solution and I love it! But definitely want to learn more about the importance of greens and micronutrients :) thank you for the great info 🌻!!
Only thing I don't like about Eat to live is that many of the recipes are blended. I don't mind a smoothie every now and then, but breakfast and soup as lunch that is puréed as well. I like to eat the food, not drink it.
This is great thanks so much. I was a vegan for many years eating more starches etc but like you when I switched to dr fuhrman Diet I felt amazing and lost 11 kilos. I have a big appetite so it allows me to eat more volume of food and stay satisfied. I would like to get the starch solution though as this would be good for when I have less time and less money. Love your posts. Thanks so much
If I lose 11 kg I'm in trouble. I'm only 5'8 and 120 pounds. And nuts and seeds are not an option for me for eating more calories. Starches are the best calorie source. Fruit is the scond best. You can't eat 2000 calories of kale and brocoli. 200-300 calories of vegetables is more than enough, they are only 100 calories per pound
I’ve done both and I really like the nutritarian diet, but on both I wouldn’t call it a diet. I lost no weight on these but I did feel better. However now that I’m fasting I am losing weight.
You can definitely do both at the same time... In the Starch Solution by John McDougall the basis of the diet is eating: 1. Half a plate of non-starchy vegetables. 2. Half a plate of starchy foods from tubers like potatoes and sweet potatoes, from legumes and beans and/or from whole grains. And fruit as dessert...eating nuts infrequently. In Joel Fuhrman's nutritarian diet he recommends... 1. 2 pounds of vegetables, half cooked and half raw including greens and mushrooms. 2. 1-2 cups of beans And a variety of other foods in his GBOMBS - greens, beans, onions, mushorooms, berries, nuts and seeds Furhman's diet recommends 30%-60% of calories from vegetables (those vegetables can include sweet potatoes) 10%-40% of calories from fruit 10%-40% of calories from beans and legumes 20% or less of calories from whole grains and/or potatoes. 10%-40% of calories from seeds, nuts and/or avocados. So you could definitely follow a McDougall diet if you were following Fuhrman's nutritarian diet because McDougall classifies beans and legumes as a starch source. The only difference would be actively eating nuts and seeds as at least 10% of calories instead of eating them sporadically. To put that in context that's ensuring you eat around 7 walnuts a day on a 2,000 calorie diet. eg. half a plate of non starchy vegetables including some greens, mushrooms and raw onion 10%-30% of calories from sweet potato 20%-40% of calories from beans and legumes 20% of calories from potatoes fruit as dessert (10%-40% of calories) including some berries like blueberries or strawberries 10% of calories as nuts and seeds eg 7 whole walnuts a day.
Thank you for this comparison. I have both books, but never got around to looking at the exact differences and similarities. I think my preference is a combo of of the two. Oh yes, and I also have Dr. Greger's book, a good one as well.
Your doggie is so cute!! I like to eat Nutritarian most of the time but I do include white rice and Yukon potatoes bc this makes me feel my best!! I think the most important part of both of these lifestyles is leaving out the oil from whatever you are making. Also I am Vegan so don't eat animal products.
What I want to know is which one of these diet is less likely to lead to osteoporosis, I never hear anyone talking about bone health and bone nutrition, they both sound good but our bones are very needy
I just don't see how an endurance athlete could do Fuhrman's diet. I cycle a lot and have recently taken up hiking too. I guess if you are sedentary maybe Fuhrman might have some good points.
Thanks, I have been eating WFPB for last 6 weeks but simply cannot eat the amount of starchy foods advocated. I am switching to Nutritarian diet as I love fruits and vegetables and it will suit me better. I am starting with 6 week challenge as I need to lose some weight and on McDougall's way of eating lost nothing.
Really grateful for this vid (& previous two) comparing McDougall’s Starch Solution & Fuhrman’s Nutritarian diets. My husband has kidney disease & needs to eat white potatoes (if at all), white or wild rice, & white rather than whole wheat bread which was strange to me til I found out its bc his kidneys can no longer process whole starches. I may need to modify Nutritarian diet to include some of Starch Solution ideas. What do you think? Any experience w/this or ever heard from on others abt this conundrum? Husband has to be on what’s called a renal diet & is living on dialysis awaiting a kidney along w/millions of other ppl. It’s a hard road let me tell you. Loving your vids.💙
Lucille, Fuhrlman is not for high protein... he may say unlimited beans but that is not going to add up to a huge amount of protein... The world is obsessed with protein which has created a MASSIVE health burden... You only need 6-9% protein (of you total daily food intake) and any more is detrimental (look up Valter Longo and T. Colin Campbell - the two leaders in my opinion as a health scientist).
I know it’s frustrating but I would suggest tryingThe Starch Solution for approximately 6 weeks and see how you feel. If you’re not satisfied with the results, you should try Eat To Live
Dr Gregor and Dr Fuhrman are my 2 favorite doctors!! I have books from both. I am a vegetarian, but feel Dr Fuhrman has it, totally has the nutritional solution down!!
McDougall is better and more correct most of the time. I feel better without any nuts and seeds. Sometimes I like eating more beans and lentils, but right now, I don't feel like having any. I would struggle to get enough calories following Dr. Fuhrman completely. Grains and potatoes better are than beans, nuts and seeds, and beans are far better than nuts and seeds. I have no use for nuts and seeds at all. I think McDougall is wrong about limiting fruit. You should eat as much as you feel like. Almost everything else I agree with him. I think he is wrong when he says that a diet of only potatoes and sweet potatoes is nutritionally complete. That sounds idiotic. I would also need at least one green or cruciferous vegetable and one grain. He sounds silly when he says that you can eat only potatoes and sweet potatoes. He also sounds idiotic when he says that you can eat 90% white rice and be ok. I love white rice, but would feel miserable eating 90% white rice. Other than that, he is right about almost everything else. McDougall is the better of the two.
As soon as you say the word 'Diet', you're sunk, you're done.....if you make your eating a lifestyle, and not get stuck in "dieting', then you have the chance for long-term success, so if you go on a diet, forget it, waste of time, but if you change your lifestyle (and , really, you should be a Nutritarian-no brainer).............
Fuhrman's diet is about ultimate health and Longevity, and anyone can see how healthy Fuhrman is aging compared to the once handsome McDougal who now looks like 'death warmed over'.
Dr. Greger isn't looking very healthy. In his latest videos he doesn't even show himself; moreover, he just talks over a pic or like a video of research papers or whatever 😕

Every year a new diet.. One says One, another says Two...They sell a lot of books, make a lot of money selling supplements and stuff and we keep following... my weight is still here...
I didnt buy any books...I simply eat a balanced wfpb diet and lost 50lbs in 6 months. If someone is not losing weight they are eating too many high calorie plant foods or alcohol, etc.. Also, only fuhrman sells supplements.

I agree. The nutritarian thing is for folks who dont mind being hungry all day every day.
This is the third time I have watched this. Your videos are superb. I wish you put out more! Thanks!
I do a combination. Hard to remember all these rules anyway. Thanks for reviewing the rules.
Both better than SAD!!!

Clear and simple breakdown of the two books/diets. Thank you! I must admit it was a little difficult focusing on anything else but your adorable dog!
Such a great comparison of these two wonderful diets. Also, your dog is the cutest!!

@@MzHannah36 of course! I'm excited to see them :)
You can definitely do both at the same time...
In the Starch Solution by John McDougall the basis of the diet is
eating:
1. Half a plate of non-starchy vegetables.
2. Half a plate of starchy foods from tubers like potatoes and sweet
potatoes, from legumes and beans and/or from whole grains.
And fruit as dessert...eating nuts infrequently.
In Joel Fuhrman's nutritarian diet he recommends...
1. 2 pounds of vegetables, half cooked and half raw including greens and
mushrooms.
2. 1-2 cups of beans
And a variety of other foods in his GBOMBS - greens, beans, onions,
mushorooms, berries, nuts and seeds
Furhman's diet recommends
30%-60% of calories from vegetables (those vegetables can include sweet
potatoes)
10%-40% of calories from fruit
10%-40% of calories from beans and legumes
20% or less of calories from whole grains and/or potatoes.
10%-40% of calories from seeds, nuts and/or avocados.
So you could definitely follow a McDougall diet if you were following
Fuhrman's nutritarian diet because McDougall classifies beans and
legumes as a starch source. The only difference would be actively eating
nuts and seeds as at least 10% of calories instead of eating them

eg. half a plate of non starchy vegetables including some greens, mushrooms and raw onion
10%-30% of calories from sweet potato
20%-40% of calories from beans and legumes
20% of calories from potatoes
fruit as dessert (10%-40% of calories) including some berries like blueberries or strawberries
10% of calories as nuts and seeds eg 7 whole walnuts a day.

I didnt buy any books...I simply eat a balanced wfpb diet and lost 50lbs in 6 months. If someone is not losing weight they are eating too many high calorie plant foods or alcohol, etc.. Also, only fuhrman sells supplements.
