My mother was really mad at me for renting this when I was a kid. She gave me money to go down the street and rent a movie, and being an 8 year old boy, I thought this one would be super good. It really wasn't, though I loved it at the time. Can't say I'm not sorry for putting my mother and sisters through watching it with me, though.

I got about 5 minutes into the movie when my mother, who was half watching it with me, clearly saw what kind of movie it was and made the excuse that it was way past my bed time and that I could watch it another time. I remember when I was 4-5 and was begging my mother to take me to see this movie. I was a big fan of the cards. I remember my mother saying that she didn’t want to see that gross movie as she hated the cards...well, she never took me...about 25 years later I was at my boys house and saw the movie in his collection. I got excited when he said I could borrow it. But he warned me, it is not gonna be what I imagine. Found the perfect time to watch it while the fam was sleep...called my mother the next day and praised her for always knowing best! At least garbage is in the title!
This film had an immediate impact on a 7 year old me. After we'd watched the film (rented from the video store) and whilst still hopped up on sugar, I stood in front of my friends and purposefully pissed my pants in homage to Nat Nerd.
The cool looking VHS cover plus the fact that I collected the garbage pail kids cards as a 80s kid is what made me rent this movie as a 6 year old. I got maybe 20 minutes into the movie before I realized it was not getting any better and I shut it off. So even 6 year old me had some standards lol. The cards were awesome and disgusting in the best way possible. My siblings and I had nearly the whole collection. Also I vividly remember renting another weird movie the same day as GBK. It was called The purple people eater and honestly from what I remember, it deserves to be reviewed. The 80s were indeed a strange (but awesome time)

Oscar was kinda like Archie Bunker (New York style) and Chucky was like a pissed off Jack Nicolson. In the LOOKS department, the two icons won't win GQ's (Grouch's Quarterly...ha, ha,) man of the year, but compared to that lot....they're Will Smith and Leonardo DeCaprio!

This is such a sad, grimy little film. If you watch it, you will feel soiled, more than you would if you watched a filthy grindhouse exploitation movie with rapes and people with stumps and skin-masks.
This was one of my friend's favorite films growing up. He didn't have the best childhood and he once told me that popping the tape into the VCR provided a kind of escape for him. When he showed me this, I was mortified. I gotta be real and say that it actually broke my heart seeing him smiling very big throughout the duration of this film, because to find solace/comfort in such a film devoid of any function or redeeming value greatly implies a childhood that must've been nothing short of a hell.
pretty sure those "kids" are past puberty which is even worse given the weird dynamics. even taking into consideration the time period this came out, I can't imagine it not being questionable to some folk. then again I doubt many sane people have watched this (thankfully) so maybe that's why

It was my first taste of being patronized, likenesses of my favorite disgusting comic collector stickers (most ended up on my lockers and desks in grade school, a few on my dresser in my bedroom) exploited to sell an awful movie with a horrible story and filled with 80s cliches that were cheesy and cliche, even by 80s standards.

This film seems GENUINELY disturbing. I don't know how it got made. And is it supposed to be a kids film? My god, it's horrific, like your worst nightmare, especially the scene with the prison.

I vaguely remember watching this as a kid and thinking "What the fuck is going on here?". It was my first taste of being patronized, likenesses of my favorite disgusting comic collector stickers (most ended up on my lockers and desks in grade school, a few on my dresser in my bedroom) exploited to sell an awful movie with a horrible story and filled with 80s cliches that were cheesy and cliche, even by 80s standards.
Some of the art on the GPK actually done by a Pulitzer Prize winner. That would be art spiegelman, the author of Maus I and II.

0:20 "Toys" have BIG VALUE nowadays! Esp if it's still in the box. Or at least in good condition. You can sell them with higher price. Really! In my countries, vintage diecast toys, even the rusty ones can sell up to USD50 !!!

Except when this movie came out and parents picketed theatres to have it pulled. I think by then most of the kids who wanted to see this movie already had and said it sucked ass.

We were very poor when cabbage patch kids were popular, round ‘83? So when my little sister asked for one for Christmas my mum went to a seamstress friend of hers and had her make a knockoff doll. It always bothered me so years later when my sister passed away at 27 I made sure she was buried with an actual cabbage patch doll.😢Anyway…
