Unbanning the Titans! No Banlist Modern | Hypergenesis vs Izzet Storm

- Thoralf & Carl aren't playing by the rules today and brought two decks full of banned modern cards. If you think Modern Horizons II is wild, wait till you see what modern would look like without a banlist!

There’s something deeply hilarious about you guys bringing no holds barred, wildly expensive magic decks to these videos and then somehow only having four dice
We have tons of dice but only 6 big dice. Still.... we should really buy more, they are only 1€ a pack 😅
@@CardmarketMagic No, you get a set of even bigger dice.
@@jamespeake2606 I second this
I mean it's pretty obvious they're not using actual cards they are proxies
@@theshadowking9626 they are the real cards, they're loaned to them for the purpose of the video by a superseller who has something like 600,000 cards for sale on CardMarket
Paper magic is just so much better than online play, but not on UA-cam usually, 'cause you can't even understand what's going on like 90% of the time. Unless you're watching Cardmarket videos obviously, because they simply rock. PLEASE do more feature matches (particularly Modern ones if I may)
Thank you! That's so kind of you! We put a lot of effort into making the videos easy to follow :)
@@CardmarketMagic It shows!
sounds like a personal issue.
It feels like the first deck everyone tries to make when there's no banlist is Hypergenesis. I'd love to see more no banlist in the future.
We have done it a few times before! Here is one we did with Gabriel Nassif:
ua-cam.com/video/kZc4MC--eg4/v-deo.html
its a bit of a eureka moment
No ban list elves is pretty crazy
@@badvoodoo2097 i want to see affinity
play it in edh. Quite fun indeed
Thoralf's stupid grin at the end of game three is amazing 😂
Man it's easy to underestimate how resilient storm can be. That game three really demonstrates why storm is such a dangerous mechanic.
Spoiler below:
Carl had ONE mana open and one castable spell when the Endurance's trigger resolved! It was CRAZY that the game was still that close!
I just want to say as a more competitive player I am so thankful that you guys have exploded onto the magic scene with your brand of content. The fun atmosphere that you guys portray magic in is mostly monopolized by commander content that isnt very engaging for a competitive player such as myself. Keep doing great work!
Thank you that is very kind!
100% this I am not a competitive player but I see commander as more of a social driven game with less interesting interaction and nearly always going infinite to win.
Jesús what a topdeck in game 3
Great production quality for a great constructed video. You all are really producing some of the best magic content!
Thank you! 😃
"I'm too silly" for prison is a hilarious quote, love it
In the last game, Carl could have cast Flusterstorm to exchange some of his Empty the Warrens copies for Baral loot triggers to try to keep going off, since even without Thoralf's last draw the 18 goblins wouldn't have been enough to chump the creatures on board and then swing back for lethal. It's definitely not obviously better than just going for the goblin stack, and does present an amount of risk, but eating some - or all - of the copies to sculpt your hand and try to find a way to get to Grapeshot would have provided a chance to win that turn, rather than giving Thoralf the chance to topdeck something.
I considered it! And thought it was too risky. I had completely missed that thoralf's deck is unlike regular hypergenesis when making that decision thought. I though 19 creatures was enough to stall until I could flashback past in flames and storm again because he would not be able to cast Emrakul's and Progenitus any time soon. Forgot that he was casting elementals and emissaries
Could the emissary have been countered by the force of will in hand?
@NathanKim-Warren yeah had to look it up, force of negation is counter a noncreature spell, which i didnt know cause force is way out of my budget
@@codyphung7912 me neither, that makes more sense
Loved this, Thoralf and Carl played the decks beautifully. Funny and well edited, good job guys
Thanks for the fun videos. Props to the editor who does the overlays and animations. Those are on point!
I loved arena boys and seeing thoralf and jamin play in person is fantastic
Been watching for a while, I love your guys synergy together. The banter is fun to watch
Damn, what an ending. I forgot that Sara's emissary can do that, truly a nail bitter.
That is the first thing people name in commander.
Would love to see a no-banlist deck playing against the top 3 format archetypes. Would really show why they are banned.
A solid half the cards on the modern banlist can come off of it because they're strictly weaker than things like hammertime or infect. Umezawa's Jitte is banned because it was too good 15 years ago. It's mediocre compared to most of the equipment in Hammertime, and not amazing against infect. Sure, it can snipe creatures if you get the counters on it, but that still just loses to infect, because it's hitting you as a 12/9 or something like that. Same with the artifact lands. Affinity dropped every affinity card (except for Thoughtcast, in a few lists) because they weren't good enough. Hypergenesis is insane, but the deck is slow, uninteractive with opponents threats, and kinda wiffs on the not dying to hammertime on turn 2/3. Splinter Twin could *maybe* work, because that just slots into grixis control again and gives it a spicy combo finisher. KCI still doesn't have a reliable way to deal with a turn two hammer, or with grief/fury/endurance/solitude. Eggs is a crapshoot whether they even get to try going off.
@@Ornithopter470 point is ban lists are pretty dumb
4:51 Chrome Mox doesn't exile the card as a cost, it lets you choose if you want to exile it on resolution. You also should probably put the card imprinted under it to avoid confusion of what (if any) color it makes
I really love your videos like this
I didn't play Magic when these cards were printed, but I started playing because of crazy stuff like this, it's always interesting to see, why some cards are overpowered
Thank you so much for your content!
This was so fun to watch. It always reminds me that when nothing is banned, there’s a strange way that the game balances itself sometimes.
The production quality in crazy good. I am no mtg expert, but you guys make it so easy to follow what's going on
The hard cast simian spirit guide was incredible
There’s no reason to cast the simian spirit guide. He already has lethal with grief attack + 1 from fiery islet. Also, grief has menace so the only way for Carl to live is by taping out and casting a creature. Thoralf can than play the gem stone cavern and pitch simian spirt guide to play archon. When Archon revolves, Archon will make Carl sacrifice a creature and lose 3 life putting him at 1. With only one, creature grief is still lethal.
@@zzzjonny1989 hard casting the simian spirit guide isn't about optimal play, it's about sending a message.
Nice to see that format again;)
Also the Carl and Thoralf Chemistry is explosive
I will never not watch one of these. Love the banned card lists. Also, this is a sweet UI overlay with the hands and effects of cards. Great job editing team.
LESGOOOOO BEEN WAITING FOR THIS WEEKS FEATURE MATCH ALL WEEK!!!! FINALLY!!!
Started to watching and I can already tell the video will be a banger
LETS GOOOOO! awesome video guys I love watching thoralf and carl go head to head.
I love their chemistry, they are so fun to watch
Thank you! :)
First time I’ve ever seen a hard cast simian spirit guide swing for the win on video! Great content!
I think this is pretty definitively the best magic channel on UA-cam now, or at least up there with the heavy hitters. I love the general focus on 60 card, the real attention to detail with the production values and the fact that it's all about the game. Honestly a channel about MTG focused on actually playing and talking about the game of magic as a game rather than as a product shouldn't be hitting an underserved niche in 2022 but it absolutely is. Channels about the business of magic, meta discussions about sets as products and release schedules, content on supporting products like slieves and deck box's ect and product openings all have a place but the core of the space should be about the game as a game, and this one is a really good example of that
That's very kind of you to say! :D
These gameplay vids have been great!
Carl’s shirt is hilarious! The content is great, keep it up!
I much prefer to watch people play in paper then a recording of magic online. absolutely love how you guys have been making these videos and I would absolutely love for more feature matches. I'd love to see more modern, pauper, and legacy. (my favorite deck is legacy manaless dredge so hopefully one day that gets featured on here haha)
Manaless dredge is a personal favorite! If ever we get back to playing legacy... :)
Great to see you again Toffel! I've missed the Arena Boys
Loving it, pls keep up the great work
I could watch content like this for hours and hours
this was really good. hope you guys can do more no banned list modern
Just some guys which are happy with their jobs! So nice to see! Great video
Dang I really freaking love your guys content! Keep it up
Thank you :D
It’s so good to see people just having an insane amount of fun playing super powerful magic
This was greatly pleasant to watch.
This is quality content. I‘d love to see more no ban list modern.
We have done it a few time before! Here is one we did with Gabriel Nassif:
ua-cam.com/video/kZc4MC--eg4/v-deo.html
I normally don't enjoy banned list content but this was good!
GG guys! Well played (and produced)!
Thank you :D
Damn I am digging how you showcase so many ways to play
That ending, such a good twist!!!
I would LOVE to see Hypergenesis again. Just rewatching the video and Atraxa would be so good to that deck, allowing to even bring force with more confidence just like its happening with Oath on Vintage
Thoralf did a small punt in game two when the gitaxian probe was cast off of the past in flames with just red floating. He could have just waited for manamorphose to be cast and nuke the graveyard in response
Game 3 he should also only give away 2 elephants, so terastodon can't be trilple blocked.
This was fantastic! Looking forward to more no ban list modern
We have done a few more before! Here is one we did a few months ago with Gabriel Nassif:
ua-cam.com/video/kZc4MC--eg4/v-deo.html
@@CardmarketMagic thanks for the heads up! That's another great video. I hope you have a great rest of your day
Thoralf is awesome haha. Ive been away from magic for probably 10yrs and it is a bit hard to follow being unfamiliar with the cards but this is a great series.
Edit wow glad theyre showing the cards more in this episode haha!
Very fun to watch, as always. Please try some unrestricted vintage ! Would love to see that. Keep up the great work, love you guys
Wooooow unrestricted vintage sounds dangerous! I would not know where to start. Do you have any suggestions? This is a topic I would be interested in doing
man, that Elephant shirt from Carl is amazing!!
Amazing matches!
Things like
"Well I actually did that"
"... no you didnt"
"Uuhm okay, sure"
*1minute later, police arrives*
Is why I love this channel and the Moderators 😄
“Lmao topdeck”
-Yugi, from Yu-Gi-Oh.
I like how "yu-gi-oh" (the anime not the card game) this is. Life bars, showing us what cards they've got in hand, etc. Real cool.
guy i ALWAYS look at your content. Your channel is awesome. Please never stop.
Thank you that is so kind! 😃
@@CardmarketMagic since magic stopped to do protour, paper magic is not a thing anymore on youtube, your are the only one with this type content and i love it
that last game was a work of art
I find I like the more broken formats of magic. Something about racing your opponent or hitting them with the banana peel in G2 or G3 is pretty great. These guys are great fun to watch.
Liking this and I don’t even play modern 😂 well done guys 🎉
Love that content !
15:05 Toffel predicts Battle as a card type lol
What an awesome elephant shirt! If my daughter seees that I'll be on the hook to buy one for Christmas.
I liked holding ssg in hand in last game, would had had 8 mana next turn for archon to win through past in flames and would had lost less life to lands against grape shot.
I'd like to see pauper mono-u faeries.
The disrepect from the monke kill was great.
I love no banlist games, always so fun to see what nonsense one could get up to
Man what a match! I just love no banlist modern!
"I'm too silly for prison." What a great line 😂
Hey I enjoyed this video but want to comment on your Modern Meta top five video.
How does someone build a different tier one deck in modern that is not in the current meta?
Do they create to hate / counter current meta or is there a formula needed to build a new competitive tournament style deck?
What would you do to create a new tournament deck, I am thinking of building in Dimir.
Omg that elephant shirt. Amazing
Very nice!
Toffel keeps the top decks coming!
32:30 best draw ever
Watching this again just makes me want to see a no ban list 12 post deck.
MADLADS!!!!!!! Thank you!
this was a joy to watch lol
I'm happy you enjoyed it! :)
Please do more of this
Awesome video
Carl, where did you get your shirt? I need it
I really love that elephant shirt, may I ask where you got it?
I tried to find it for you, but it looks like the Etsy seller does not make them anymore :/ sorry
Absolutely love seeing no banlist modern. Such a fun format!
I'm surprised I didn't see any Deathrite Shaman dredge shenanigans
In the second match you should play endurance in response to past in flames
Omg that elephant shirt!!!!!
You guys are awesome.😂
Currently building a deck utalizing curious obsession and combat research with a spirits gameplan to win the game. Would love to see you guys play it😁
What format is it for? Do you have a decklist?
That was a good match storm is scary
A no ban list game sounds like it ether be a epic back and forth or over by about the third turn.
top deck of the century at the end
what a great game 3! :D
Storm missed a very cool line game 3. You could fluster your own Empty the warrens, looting 1 card for each with the Baral.
After that you had many possible lines, such as Grapeshot, ritual, Past in Flames, Grapeshot.
Really cool video tho, keep up the great work!
Sorry, but the spell would only be countered once, so you would only get one loot. I thought of this line, but decided it was better to have two more goblins and then use the flusterstorm as an extra storm count if I needed to go off again later on :)
@@CardmarketMagic You could let the storm trigger on Empty resolve to get the copies on the stack, then cast Flusterstorm. Each Flusterstorm copy could target a different Empty the Warrens copy to counter them all :)
Ah yes, protection from socrecies, my favorite card type to choose
Took me way to long to realize Carl's shirt was an elephant.
Carl! I saw that shirt before but only today I found out it is an elephant 🐘 😅
31:15 one mana short of flashing back past in flames to flash back empty the warrens for another 22 goblins
protection from socrecies
7:32
:D
Please play hardened scales next. Id love to see it.
More impressed he drew triple ponder in a row... thats insane unluck
In another life, Toffel could have been a really great actor (but he's a really great mtg player instead so I guess that's ok). Great content as always!
I think the mechanic that got the most cards banned is easily Affinity for Artifacts.
Yes that would actually be correct 😅 my bad
