I really think it's funny to see all these comments saying that the BFG Edition sucks, starting with the lighting, because I clearly remember that back in the day almost everyone criticized how dark the game was. And basically most of the changes they did with the game were things also criticized with the original (like the flashlight).
Yeah. I remember the flashlight being talked about as something stupid. Like people had a "duct tape" mod to get a light on the shotgun. Because a space marine not being able to illuminate an area with a gun is stupid. Most cops do that. Never had a problem with the dark light though. I think people are nostalgic and set in their ways, though. BFG edition get too much hate. And you know that brightness slider? Yeah you can turn that down. Amazing.
The atmosphere in the original game is fantastic. BFG makes difficulty trivial with the extremely generous amount of ammo you get. Also, I think the flashilight mechanic adds a lot to the tension and horror. The game is one hell of a ride. (I played BFG edition first, then original)
I own both the vanilla (cd retail) and BFG copy of D3,ROE. I found that simply by lowering the brightness in the BFG edition, via settings, will diminish a lot of the brightness/high contrast you see in this clip, which is performing in it's default settings.. It accentuates the darkness many of you loved about the original release. BFG does have better texture work and there has since been a work around to apply HD mods (though Steam Achievements won't be active, if you use them. Whether that's important or not, is up to you). The other great thing about BFG, is it's ability to produce higher and more consistent frame rates. So you will notice a much smoother game play than the vanilla version, which had problems in it's coding (compression) that denied smoother fps on newer machines, (memory leaks) using newer graphics cards. Also, another HUGE plus (for me at least) is how fast BFG loads up, vs the vanilla version. This again, having to do with compression tech being fixed on BFG. So basically, every level, loads almost instantaneously. IMHO, the BFG edition is not nearly as bad as some purists say it is. Not bad at all. Actually, the one thing that does bother me about BFG, is that the audio effects/ambient sounds are much more impressive on the vanilla copy, as it makes great use of your sound card (whether integrated or not) and you can further enhance it, whereas the BFG edition has a locked setting which sometimes makes it hard to understand the dialogue in the game. I suppose this is because BFG was originally designed for consoles and then ported for PC use... That's my only real complaint here and it is a big one. If only the vanilla copy of Doom 3 and ROE, were free of graphic glitches (particle issues that can break the entire experience) and stutter free fps, I would say not to bother with BFG. But, those issues are prominent, depending on what computer you are using. Especially newer builds with high end peripherals.
On the original if you shoot the muzzle flash lights up environments, in bfg it does not. Sucks they too that away since it helped in dark combat scenarios. They probably took the flash away because of a mounted flashlight
The audio in the original PC version supported EAX and it was almost as though that's how it was intended to be played, as it sounded so much clearer when it was enabled. I noticed that the BFG edition sounds the same as with EAX disabled. Also, the spatial 3D sound from EAX was actually amazing if you have surround.

It does if you played the original games. The BFG was a gun, obviously, and it became somewhat of a 90's gaming meme. ID called it the BFG edition in recognition of their original fans. Certainly put a smile on my face.
There's a lot to be said in favour of the original's darker, more claustrophobic lighting scheme, especially in terms of how it lets shadows seem a little more natural, but truth be told, it made playing the game a chore, especially with the classic flashlight - that's part of the reason why the BFG version is substantially brighter. Ironically, the integrated "duct tape" mod was somewhat unnecessary in BFG as the refined lighting model made the environments rather easier to see.

Bfg is better but it's funny, I always on the flashlight most of the time during the game, even though the comparison states bfg adds more brightness. I guess in survival horror, darkness is the factor to it.
I just bought Doom 3 on steam for 9.99 bucks, it contains both the original and the re-mastered (the BFG). I finished Doom 3 at its time and now I play BFG and I believe BFG is way better than the original by having tinkered the exact things that people complained about: too dark, repetitive flashlight switch, not smooth, scarce ammo. Now they are fixed and gamers complain again, figure that. I agree the flashlight fix was not elegant, but still better than the original, it saves you the hassle of swapping your flashlight for a gun all the time. Some purists complained that took the edge of the horror of the darkness, now that you have unlimited light with you, but I believe it's a more of a discipline action: keep the flashlight off and use it only when truly needed. Doom 3 is solid experience, a great game. I recommend only BFG version and maybe coupled with Quake 4.
BFG edition looks nice in its own way but I wish there was a version of Doom 3 that doesn't have the crazy ID tech 4 bump mapping/normalmaps/whatever it is that makes models look like they are made of plastic
Ugh, why did they have to change Sarge's appearance? The original one was so much better... the new one is bland. Also, why did they have to truncate some of the RoE levels? What was the problem with that sewer sequence or the Mancubi/Hell Knights battle in the Hell level? "Game is too hard, we should make it easy enough for a CoD player to handle it, duh."
As stated... The dark felt much more immersing than all the shiny bling of BFG edition. I'm guessing they brightened it up to show off increasing the texture res. Maybe if they would have just played with the lighting some instead of just turning up the bling the BFG edition would have been worth it. Underrated game as a whole though. Loved the survival horror type corridor feel, but I'm glad they changed up the new Doom.

Yeah, the game got a lot of hype when it came out, but quickly started getting flak for being a little too simplistic compared to its competition. People kinda forgot that it was still a good game taken on its own merits. The light and dark differences are totally unforgivable, and actually change the gameplay and strategy of the game. It also ruins the original artistic vision of the levels. Half of Doom 3 was about depending on your flashlight(gun flashlight modded in or not) to navigate pitch black areas. They basically ruined a lot of those meticulously arranged lighting environments with the only trade-off being native widescreen support, which it already had with tweaks. That said, in a static scene, the lighting is still very close. If BFG supported mods, this wouldn't be so bad. The insanely good OpenAL sound from the original is gone, instead opting for XAudio, which adds 7.1, but doesn't have real hardware acceleration and environmental processing. So sound quality is objectively worse. The game was designed from the ground up to be played with hardware-processed environmental reverb. It's what sold the Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 and X-Fi to millions of PC gamers. BFG Edition does not have it. The only thing BFG does for a benefit IMO, is slightly sharpen the textures and round out the square-ish character heads a bit. For the textures, the big issue was that Doom 3 was compressed for retail basically all at once. Primitive compression technologies meant it ate video memory like nuts and the normalmapping on everything was very pixellated. It was one of the first games EVER to require a 512MB video card for maxed settings, but the textures were pretty mediocre, even for the time. Everything was very shiny and nice at a distance, with great pixel shader-esque effects, but turned into a blob up close. For BFG, they've kept the texture resolution mostly the same, but went through everything with new compression technologies. It's essentially what the textures would have looked like in the original, had idTech known what they were doing with their scary new technology. If we could have a way to apply the BFG textures to the original, that would be great. Right now, Doom 3 with texture packs, sound mods, and SikkMod or ENB straight up looks and sounds better in the end.
Could've at least compared the BFG edition against Doom 3 at Ultra settings. The textures in this video are at Low, as the game has a glitch on newer OS. You have to edit the cfg file to get Ultra now.

Definitely not. People apparently forgot that there was a reason why they changed the lighting in Doom 3 in the first place for the BFG Edition.
Es la misma mamada solo con mas brillo
BFG sucks
To me it looks like they updated the resolution to 720p/1080p and since Doom 3 BFG is on the Xbox 360 the frame rate will be limited to a lousy 32fps instead of 120fps with the original on a decent computer. In short Doom 3 looks better.
New edition doesn't look any better.
It does look better. Textures has improved
bfg edition looks worse, than original
Original is better. Because it has more shadows and we don't see whole bad graphic.
Is this google cardboard? ☭
The original one looks almost the same as the new one. LOL!
Doom 3 original still better. i already won doom doom 2. Hexen:Beyond Heretic Hexen 2 Hexen Dark Catherdrial Heretic
do i need to go on?.
point been when they say BFG edition i expected a Overhual of changes... not a fucking xbox edition port with lost missions added...
Original win!

Original win! bfg sucks
Nice music! BFG sucks
OG is better
