I too love coleus!!! I grew mine into a tree!!! I let the main stem grow about 3 feet tall, cut off all the side shoots and let the top bush out! Pinching the growth, and now I have a lollipop tree! Took 3 years but it looks sooooo cool now!
My husband isn't really into plants. But he has been talking about one he saw at a friends for the last 3 weeks. Today I ask that friend what kind of plant it is so I can make my hubby happy. And guess what plant it was 😂😂 You have perfect timing 😂😂
Just bought my coleus 4rm Chicago. It's beautiful foliage made me bring it back to Indianapolis w/ me. Your videos are very helpful for a first timer here.
Loved your video, I already pretty much had a good understanding of pruning and pinching coleus but your delivery and no holds bar approach had me hooked. Props to you and I subscribed. Looking forward to more of that directness.
Dammit! Literally two minutes before I watched this video I looked at my coleus clipping and smiled at the flower emerging from it. "How beautiful!" I naively thought to myself. I didn't think the sonofabeech is trying to die on me!
I am new with Coleus plants, literally just a few days ago , and I am going crazy with having as many varieties as possible coz they're so pretty. I really thought I have 12 varieties of cuttings, but when I saw the first and this second video, I think I might have been fooled. I am from the Philippines and we do have a lot of sunlight everywhere all year round, so I will have to observe if the green ones with tinges of violet will eventually turn all dark. I would really like to have the darker varieties. I was also afraid that I am putting too much cuttings in one pot (I have an 11" diameter by 9" depth) , but seeing how much you "crowd" your pot, I think I am on the right track and I can put in some more. I am still in the stage of propagating the cuttings that I got, and you gave me a lot of hope that I can do this! I am so glad I found you and your videos Pam!
i was trying to pinch the ugly leaves of my small dying coleus with my fingers and accidentally pinched off the whole new healthy bunch of leaves. left one ugly leaf and thankfully it's now growing back healthily.
I just bought my first home and it came with a beautiful yard with established perennials. My husband waters the front and i water the back. We always excitedly inform echother if we find unexpected volunteer plants poping up. In the back my favorite volunteer is a beautiful purple petunia that is growing at the base of a red oak. My husband's favorite is a volunteer colius that popped up in our drain run off. With fall approaching I took it on myself to save the little colius and bring it inside. I've been told by my garden friends they don't do well over winter inside, but you give me hope. 😁
Ugh everytime I watch your videos you super remind me of my best friend. It just make me miss her so much. We live so far from each other so you make me happy everytime I watch your videos. PS love the music.😉
This video is exactly what I needed! Thanks for all of the super specific info, the demonstrations of the whole process, the plant knowledge as to why you do what you do, and the good humor. YES! Thanks!
I buy a bag of cheap seeds at the dollar store every year and plant them outside. When they germinate I pick a few of the prettiest or most interesting to come inside as houseplants, they always wound up dying in the winter. Thanks for helping me not only make them look gorgeous, but thrive all year long!
hey pam. thanks so much for your very informative video. i really appreciate your taking the time to be thorough. it really helped to see your plants and see you working with them instead of just talking about it all. coleus are so pretty! hope everyone can save their plants now. linda from california
I bought a coleus for its beautiful pastel like pinks and yellows and then I put it in a bright spot and it’s colours quickly deepened to dark pink and the yellow became a white. I think. I was a little disappointed I didn’t take a picture of it before. I like how it looks now but I liked how it looked before it was in bright light. 😅 My bird also loves pulling the bright foliage off my coleus.
Thanks for the video, and outtakes 😁. I'm that person that will ask strangers for a piece of their plant. I also snap off random plants i have access to ANYWHERE 😝 love those ruffle edge variety you have.
Thank you for this vid. As a Coleus Master I can grow/propagate indoor/outdoor in pots/shaded garden beds. My collection grows yearly and my yard is fantastic.
I don’t actually have a coleus plant but I feel like I can apply a lot of the information from this video to my trandescantia, who know maybe now I’ll go and get a coleus 🤔
Thank you for being aggressive. Mine was beautiful but getting taller and the weight was making the middle look like It had a hole. I went a little ruthless and thought I cut too much. I am hopeful she’ll be okay with her new baby props 🌱 Thank you for not being dainty with them! I feel better.
Thank you for your help in this video! I got my Coleus about 3 yrs ago as a very small plant from a convenience store! I've cut it twice so far but that's all I know! Your video will definitely help me to fix all the problems it has right now. It's a total indoor plant and it sits below our front window so it gets mostly midday sun by reaching up for it! The leaves are pretty small but now I know why!! Thanks again for your help!!👍🏽☺️☺️☺️
Thank you so much for this video. I think you pretty much covered everything for me. Something knocked mine over 2 times before I brought it indoors. Took a goid 6" strip out if the middle.
I'm ready to prune back my leggy coleus now--thank you! I put the plant on my desk so I hope I'll get better at pinching it back... sitting next to it for 8 hours every day should be a good reminder!
Great info on Coleus for indoor growers. I lost a Coleus to some bugs and am and on a mission to do it right this time. EDIT: Love the way you fill in the pot with those cuttings from the trimmed leggies.
You look gorgeous! I know I said that last time. 😂 And great video, as always. Just took some more cuttings this morning and put them back in the pot. Oh and I'm in love with your Othello.
This was my 1st year growing coleus (outdoors) and I absolutely love them. I’ve watched both of your videos along with others on overwintering and growing them from seed. Fingers crossed that I get to replant these beauties outdoor next year, as well as, keeping a few for year-around indoor 🤞🏻
So commented on the original, and the gist was... You are great and I can't wait for my day off cause I've got some coleus cuttings I'm gonna plant! And I learned a TON from this video so now I've got a goal. To make it to 8 years... And beyond! Love your videos!💚🌿💚
@@PamsPrettyPlants I must say though that I tried putting my clipping directly into the soil and watched it carefully and kept that area wet. But after a couple days I noticed the leaves were starting to curl up and look awful. I pulled it back out of the soil and put the stem in water and it sprung back to life!! The leaves uncurled and everythhing! I was so happy because they were nice big colorful leaves
Extremely Helpful! Great job....answered all of my questions with demonstrations! I was hesitant on going full butcher on these plants, but now I can cut without fear! Thanks for the info, I am subbed, still!
I bought my grandmother a pretty coleus a few years ago. She had a green thumb and loved growing. When she passed earlier this year the plant came back to me … death by Jess 🤦♀️ I’m trying my damnedest to keep this thing alive. It’s leggy and the stems are woody. Recently brought the pot in due to colder weather and the leaves are falling off - some have transparent spots. Checked for pests unsuccessfully. Don’t know why I’m rambling and telling you all this 😂 Actually just came here to say thanks for the informative and entertaining tutorial.
Really enjoyed watching your video. Super informative. I have a leggy coleus. I brought a few in a pot into my work place. It has flowered and I did want to know if it was going to die or if I could remedy that. I have since taken 3 cuttings and put them in a modern martini glass and will repot once it has rooted. The rest of the plant is on the floor, since the window sill is too cold now. I will let the 3 flower heads turn brown and then clip them and store them in a bag for 2 weeks and collect the seeds for next spring. Thanks again for the thorough explanation. I look forward to giving new life to my office plant for the winter.
Your video was very informative and educational. I enjoyed watching it, and learning from what you've said. I love coleus, and grow mine outside in my pots. Thanks for posting this wonderful video.
OK Pam most of us who watch YT know that your a Coleus Advocate. So how about enlightening us with some varieties? Just like Kaylee with her rare plant index. Coleus index if you will coz seriously I also think coleus are beautiful but also underated. Plus I truly wish ever plant parent should have one in their home. Anyhoo just a thought. 😊 love the video again. Plus whoa an 8 year pot. That's amaaaazing! I
Hahah well that’s her thing but I could definitely assemble a video on some interesting cultivars! It’s hard to find much about them, they’re so dang under appreciated
I just discovered you. You rock! I didn’t quite catch how big the cutting should be to propagate. Against btr judgement, bought 2 leggy but gorgeous coleus. Planted today and bam, there you were lol. Tyvm.
Hahaha I’m like a spirit that materializes whenever someone says “leggy coleus” three times. I like to keep my cuttings 2-3 nodes size, not too long or you’ll just be starting another leggy coleus!
Just found you through this video and you speak my language LOL...love it, had to subscribe and rang the bell because I surely don't want to miss out on anything you may post! Awesome! You're surely my tribe!
Loved your video. Very informative. Coleus is my favorite plant. I planted too many seeds in my foil pan. They are just germinating now. When should I thin them out? Thanks girl. You rock!!
Thank you, those are very thorough instructions. Some of my spindly coleus don't even show nodes, so I'm not sure how far down to cut. It got really out of hand!
Just stay 2” above any “woody” parts of the stem and you should have a node even if it’s hard to see. So long as the roots are healthy, it’ll also put out new shoots so even without a viable node, a prune can stimulate growth!
Wish I’d have found you when I first brought my two plants in to overwinter. Never pinched, went to seed, lots of leaf drop and leggy as hell by the time it was time to move back outdoors a few weeks ago. Just ruthlessly pruned and grabbed some cuttings to fill in the pots once they can hand the sunny space. Thanks for a great vid. Here’s hopping they make it through🤞🏼
I bet you’ll have some survivors in those cuttings! They look extra dramatic when they’re sad but I’ve often found even the most pitiful to bounce back with some TLC! Good luck!!
Don't have any coleus because the leggy issue. You make it look easy. I was admiring some coleus at my local garden center / feed store. Think I might give one a try. Thanks! You have a huge fan up here in Laconia New Hampshire. Your kitten is adorabibble!
Your videos are so helpful. I have a pretty Kong and I love him! He's a diva as far as watering lol 😆 but I just love him so much. Funny story, I was gifted my Kong just from cuttings last month and I had no idea what I was looking for when I went to pick up the cuttings. The gifter left them on a rock outside her house and I almost didn't want to take them home when I saw them. There were some straggly, limp, dead looking stems...once I got him trimmed down and in a cup of water, they bounced back immediately and have TAKEN OFF so fast in my kitchen. I'm actually afraid of the first growing season lol I have a feeling this plant is gonna be YUGE. ❤️
Lol 😂 you are hilarious! Great coleus advice too. I knew they were beautiful plants in their prime but soon got tall and skinny. Now I know how to fix the problem. "Fat line of rooting powder" 😂 😂 😂
if you want to grow from seed, the easiest way is to let the flower stalks dry. once the is done, snip the flower stalks and put in paper bag,and let them dry. in the spring, shake the bag.the seeds will fall and you can clean out the trash. i spread these on a starting tray, water and cover. i literally get hundreds each year and havn't bought any plants in about ten years. mitch b.
Another tip is that they actually don’t root at the nodes, they root all along the stem so you don’t have to take that into consideration when you cut it 😁
I just rooted cuttings from my outdoor Coleus, just in time, had cold enough night that most of them died 😪 I had no idea you could propagate by just sticking in soil, thanks!
Great info! My coleus grew so well this year that I decided to dig them up and bring them in for winter. Used a large tote to mix up an insecticidal soap & water. Submerged the entire plant for 15-20 minutes and then rinsed. Replanted in new pots with fresh soil and brought inside. Here’s my question: I have pets and I see you also have a cat. Are you concerned about pets chewing/eating them as they are said to be toxic?
Hi! No, I really don’t stress that because toxic plants taste like fire and poison as the first part of their defense mechanisms so for most plants you’d have to have one demented animal to keep eating something that tastes terrible to the amount they’d need to ingest. THAT SAID, you know your cat best. I fortunately don’t have chewers, I did when I filmed this, the black kitty passed away but she was a nibbler. But only the one nibble then the taste would be enough for her- she would bite my plants to get my attention more than to eat them. That said I never saw her go for the coleus, they have a sappy smell to them I think might be off putting to cats, but that’s just observation. I’ve had a lot of luck just keeping plants on a crowded surface, cats usually won’t attempt it if there’s nowhere to land.
(The cat died at nearly 17 years old from a brain tumor too, just realized that sounded funny like OH I HAD A CHEWER.. promise she didn’t poison herself lol.)
Great info and very entertaining 🙌 I’ll have to try putting cuttings directly into the soil. For now I’m am enjoying my vases of coleus cuttings in several rooms 🌱😆
Nice! Let me know how they do! I need some folks to test bringing the whole plant in cause I didn’t keep any in containers this year and I’m too lazy to dig them up lol
Questions for part 3! 1. You mentioned possible plant shock when moving from indoor to outdoor, does that apply to trimmings? 2. My coleus was fairly leggy before I started pinching, now I got a long-ass bushy top baby and I’m wondering if I should just fight back the tears and start fresh? Cut it way back? Have you had any of yours do this? 3. Same plant seems to have gone to flower 4 or 5 times now? Hasn’t died! I trim them back and save the tips, I’m curious if that’s just based on where I live... plant is on my north porch in southern california: bright but never direct sun.
My Coleus is a mix of one I grew from seed and also a cutting from a friend. It KEEPS flowering and I keep pinching. Sounds like I need to do a heavy prune. Also growing in an Eastern window.
You’re funny than a muh fug, I learned a lot about dealing with leggy coleus, thank you so much for the information, the beauty, and the detail, of the video, I just planted my first coleus seeds, pray it goes well,
Hey great work, I started some plants in some peat and perlite and some compost and they started to sprout but i wasnt happy with the pots i had them in. I transferred them to a seed starting green house type thing in peat and vermiculite only. Transplanting them i tried to be as careful as i could but was wondering how resilient they are to man handling them like that. I guess ill find out but would love to hear your advise. Keep up the great work, I watch your vids all the time, Cool to have someone just be chill and lay it out without sounding like a frikkin robot.
Seedlings can handle a lot, they’ll be fine! The only time I’ve seen them not recover it was because I lifted them out from the stem and was a little too hard on them and squashed some stems. I lift from the leaves now and they’ve lived through all manner of mangling!
I love my coleus! They grew great in my garden. I’m digging them up and transitioning them indoors soon for the winter. Wish me luck 💜🌱🌎 I have some already in pots to bring in too. I think everything will work out ok. 👍🏼
Also watching you water your cutting me at the end made me remember that I used to use a turkey badger too do the same thing. Have you seen the squirt bottles with the little straw in them? Like the ones I think a scientist would use 😂😂😂 I found them on amazon and it was seriously a game changer. I keep one in each room and if something needs a a quick water it’s right there. They are great for watering in small areas and for topping of propagation vessels with narrow tops. I don’t use them for my main watering but they are great for a quick squirt 😂 anyways, just thought I’d share- keep doing you!
Mine must be special since it’s still alive after flower at least 3 times since your last video. I still need to move it out of my propagation bin 🙈 poor guy still hasn’t got it’s own planter yet. Thanks for more information on them. I might be pruning it this time.
Nice! Flowering isn’t a death sentence, but combined with cold weather outside it could be! That was more what I meant. Plus the energy goes to the flowers instead of more leaves which is what we want in this case but that’s good to know they can keep on going! My indoors flower now and then but not the whole plant, usually just a branch or two.
I did comment on the other video about my giant coleus thats 3'8" tall, have you seen it on IG? It stays outside during the warmer months and comes in during the winter successfully every year!
No, but I’m glad to hear it. I’ve never done it myself so I didn’t feel in the position to advise it, if you wanna leave another comment with a quick run down of how you do it, I’ll pin it!
I too love coleus!!! I grew mine into a tree!!! I let the main stem grow about 3 feet tall, cut off all the side shoots and let the top bush out! Pinching the growth, and now I have a lollipop tree! Took 3 years but it looks sooooo cool now!
I have got to try that!!
I have been attempting to make mine into a tree! I hope it will someday be 3 feet!
Can we see?😁😃

Boyfriends and husbands LOVE colorful plants it’s so funny. It’s always a croton, a coleus, or a polka dot plant, I swear.
This is so wholesome.

Very refreshing to have some straight talk about Coleus. Your very hip and not to hard on the eye either. Keep up the great vids.
Thank you!

Good luck!!
Now I gotta comment again since u took down the original lol... idr what I originally commented but I know it said.. Luv u Pam..u savage!! 😉😂🤣😘
Don't have any coleus because the leggy issue. You make it look easy. I was admiring some coleus at my local garden center / feed store. Think I might give one a try. Thanks! You have a huge fan up here in Laconia New Hampshire. Your kitten is adorabibble!
Excellent idea of the baster. Thanks for the video.
I was to learn how people prune them into literal trees. Like please can I have a literal coleus tree. 😂
Great video! So helpful. Thanks for sharing your experience, wisdom and humor.
Thank you for watching! 🥰 Happy pruning 💚
Lol 😂 you are hilarious! Great coleus advice too. I knew they were beautiful plants in their prime but soon got tall and skinny. Now I know how to fix the problem.
"Fat line of rooting powder" 😂 😂 😂
if you want to grow from seed, the easiest way is to let the flower stalks dry. once the is done, snip the flower stalks and put in paper bag,and let them dry. in the spring, shake the bag.the seeds will fall and you can clean out the trash. i spread these on a starting tray, water and cover. i literally get hundreds each year and havn't bought any plants in about ten years. mitch b.
Another tip is that they actually don’t root at the nodes, they root all along the stem so you don’t have to take that into consideration when you cut it 😁
I love coleus!!! Grew some from seed this last spring 🤗
Great video! You answered all my questions.
Thanks for the great video
Love that behind the scene too :)
educational and humorous! Thank you!
😁🫶
You're the best! And funny. Love the coleus confidence!
Aw! Thank you!! 🥰
Thank you for the information, mine or in flowers, lesson learn, will grow more from seed and start all over.
Bringing the whole outdoor coleus can introduce pests to your home too. Took my first cuttings to winter inside this year.
It’s most definitely “coleii” 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Sounds right unless it is the same either way. One coleus. Many coleus. One coleus.. many coleii. Both sound pretty good to me.
😂😂
Yes 2020 has been a complete f***. Thank you for the humor. Humor helps. 🙂
I'm glad you are able to grow these indoors! Some beautiful plants. Next time I can get my hands on some I should check out this series again
Club Coleus will be here!
Very informative thank you very much for more clearly showing us and for all the fantastic tips and care
I just rooted cuttings from my outdoor Coleus, just in time, had cold enough night that most of them died 😪 I had no idea you could propagate by just sticking in soil, thanks!
You are hilarious 😂 and I’ve really enjoyed your videos!
Great video Pam! Love how you handle rude comments! More UA-camrs should call rude people out. Nip that in the bud!
Great info and very entertaining 🙌 I’ll have to try putting cuttings directly into the soil. For now I’m am enjoying my vases of coleus cuttings in several rooms 🌱😆
Love your vids & adore your eye make up in this one!!
Thanks too you Pam, this first year I’ve brought my Colei, Coleus in side for the winter. 😃💚 They really are too beautiful too let freeze. 😍
Nice! Let me know how they do! I need some folks to test bringing the whole plant in cause I didn’t keep any in containers this year and I’m too lazy to dig them up lol
Pam's Pretty Plants Luckily, I had all of mine in pots. 😃 Will let ya know how it goes. 💚
I like dark chocolate coleus...thank you for your tips...waiting your next video.
Pam great video and care tips. As always your channel rocks,!!!!
Hello i found your channel and i have coleus plant indoors was wondering what you put on top of your soil to keep the moisture.
Amazing thanks soo much for these advices on coleus pruning, really good explanations. Will keep following you 💯
Hi Pam
Loved the video and very curios to see the result, can you please show us how this pot look today?
I love your videos. You are doing GREAT!!!! Your Muic List is THUMBS UP girl ♥
My Coleus is a mix of one I grew from seed and also a cutting from a friend. It KEEPS flowering and I keep pinching. Sounds like I need to do a heavy prune. Also growing in an Eastern window.
You’re funny than a muh fug, I learned a lot about dealing with leggy coleus, thank you so much for the information, the beauty, and the detail, of the video, I just planted my first coleus seeds, pray it goes well,
I am making a circle in salt to call the old gods and the new for you! 😂🪄
And THANK YOU! For all the nice words 🥰
Ha, nice. I planted six coleus seeds, so far 5 are sprouting, I believe in miracles, yay! Thank you, 🍾
Woo!! 🙌
I struggle sometimes with plants others have given to me and coleus is one of them Thanks
They can be fussy, don’t feel bad!
Good luck!! Let me know how they do! I haven’t braved that level of overwintering yet.
@@PamsPrettyPlants Thanks! I’ll definitely be doing the bring in & out for about 2 weeks before I leave them in. 👍🏼 Usually works out
0:49 had to check when you put this video out…thought you were talking about just the events in July 2024!
lol nope just a millennial that is so so so tired of living history 😅 this month has been the longest 10 years so far
This is exactly the information I was looking for- thank you! New sub here from Pittsburgh, PA 🙋♀️🌸🥰
Cant wait to hear how the rooting powder paid off (or not)!
Thank you so much for your great and informative video! I’m so excited that I can save my coleus.
You’re so welcome! Good luck!
Oh that’s so smart! Less mess than the baster!
Pam's Pretty Plants
Thank you. I must have missed that.
Thank you so much Pam! Love your videos as much as I love coleus!!!!! ❤️
Thanks so much Lindsay!! 🥰
Thanks for sharing your information !
