This is definitely an important perspective that needs to be discussed. What goes hand in hand with this is that people are anticipating "what's next" so much that even when we get an awesome movie like Dune: Part Two, after about a week and a half the majority of the internet has already moved on from it...We used to actually drink it in and constantly discuss when a landmark title like that would release, but not in 2024. Great video, Brando!

I can’t remember the last time I went to a movie at the theatre and wasn’t disrupted by someone in the theatre. Yes ticket prices are absurd but nobody can just sit and watch a movie anymore, have to get their phone out or talk through the whole damn thing or even start vaping! Theatres also are cutting staff down to lower numbers because they aren’t as busy as they used to be so when something is going wrong there isn’t anybody that can really help or do checks in the theatre throughout the movie. I am jealous of the people who aren’t bothered by that and it doesn’t take away from their movie experience.

I guess I try to block al the negatives out.. I’m very fortunate I rarely have a bad theater experience or a bad audience but. I also try to go during times when most of the public won’t be there. I’ve noticed this year there’s a lot of first time directors getting opportunities which is good. On the flip side it could be because they’re cheaper and the lack of experience can sometimes make not that great of a movie.

Totally agree with everything you said, I couldn’t have articulated it any better.
I’ve officially reached the point now where I only go to the theatre maybe 2-3 times per year. I just can’t deal with idiots who talk/use their phone during the movie. It’s incredibly disrespectful and it astounds me how often it happens. Does nobody understand basic cinema etiquette anymore? I feel like these used to be rare one off occurrences, but I’ve noticed in the last few years it’s become a regular thing.
Also I remember during the pandemic people complaining about the lack of new movies, and I was telling them the same thing… “you have 100 years worth of cinema to explore”.
I watched so many classics during this period. All the spare time gave me a chance to catch up on the back catalogue of Kubrick, Scorsese, Hitchcock etc. I was even watching monster movies from the 30’s haha.

It’s ok man, I definitely feel your opinion and agree with it. Here is what I want to comment on the reasons you gave and my input
Lack of good quality films - While I do find there to still be really good quality films in theaters - I really feel like a lot of them are indie films and no mainstream blockbusters.
Predictability - Studios need to learn that franchises have to die at some point. They can’t be interesting forever, and there’s only so much that can be done. The box office is symbolizing this, look at Ghostbusters Frozen Empire’s awful gross so far! We are craving something fresh and interesting - I think this is why Dune 2 was so great because while it technically is a franchise, it was a story that was complex and the movie was just so well made, crazy good visuals and everything
Hype - This is perhaps the most annoying thing. I don’t understand why every new movie that comes out has to be touted as being the best thing ever. While there are still great films, them being described early as the best film of all time is only for sure going to make the film fall below your expectations.
Politics - I agree. Kind of ironic that movies are meant to escape from reality yet so many studios (Both sides of political spectrum) try to shove down ideologies down our throats. Even if I agree with things being pandered, I don’t want politics in movies. This is coming from a guy who has committed his life to avoiding political stuff b/c I believe it only causes divisions among people. It is really sad in many ways.
Bad Theater Experiences - I do find the home experience to be somewhat better due to how it is only you and the movie, not with a bunch of rude strangers. What you said at 12:02 I actually agree with. I understand it’s natural for people to get excited, like in NWH, but I don’t like when people scream and jump up and down. Movies are supposed to please crowds, but not in a way that makes them act insane. While some moments in NWH did have my mind being excited, I was trying to soak in the movie and not act like a crazy person in the theater.
Great video Brandon! I love your channel!

It's not just you Brandon. I have 44 years and I also feel this way recently. It's not a result of growing older because the movies you described getting excited for, I did too. It was around the same time that the problems started to show. The Force Awaken made me feel so inspired only to disappoint, and Endgame pretty much signalled the end. It's not just movies either, it's everything. It's TV shows and games, and food and drink and all of it. We're getting to the point where everyone is just sick and tired of everything. @@BrandoCritic what? That's a bit mean. Well, while it's not technically wrong, it's certainly needlessly reductive and ignoring the point of what you were saying. I'm sure you're already well aware of what can be achieved by researching indie films, but that's not what you want, or any of us for that matter. I cook most of my food completely from scratch these days, can't even use stuff like ham, as that's got crap in it too. We now have over 100 years of film since the silent film era, almost every idea has been done at least once before. I don't agree when people complain that they are looking for something original, how many different kinds of stories can be told where no one can find a film from the past that is similar. I do agree with you that we have so many incredible movies from the past that we can always still enjoy, we should be more selective in the future. Maybe we only find 5-10 great movies a year for a while, anything is better than nothing. Future generations will have thousands of great movies to choose from, we have to guide them into which ones to watch that are of the highest quality.

Thank you mentioning the political stuff. You explained it very well without being partisan. I first noticed this after I watched the Last Jedi. I genuinely didn’t like the movie when I saw it. I thought the story was all over the place and didn’t make any sense, the characters were poorly developed, and the tone was all over the place. Immediately afterwards, the discussions about the movie were heated, but they were still about Star Wars. However, weeks later it turned into people saying that you were racist and sexist if you didn’t like the movie, especially if you criticized Rey or Rose. I even saw articles blaming the low rotten tomatoes audience score on “Russian bots”. After that I was just like “alright, this is getting ridiculous.” And just like you said, this wasn’t just coming from fans. This came from people who worked for Lucasfilm as well as JJ abrams and Rian Johnson.
Honestly, the only new movie I have intention of seeing is MI Dead Reckoning part 2 and this movie has been delayed twice. Once because of the pandemic and twice because of the Hollywood strike.

I agree with you Brandon Covid writers strike last year has affected movies badly. What about Alien Romulus? The trailer looks good doesn't give away too much of the plot and it looks like a combination of Alien and Aliens. Director Fede Alvarez even said he went back to as much practical affects to make it feel real and he also consulted with Ridley Scott and James Cameron and they both had good things to day about it. I understand how you feel about the audience in the theaters Brandon. I live in south east Asia and one time on weekend I went to see the first Nun and I kid you not the crowd was scared like they all had just crapped their pants. It was so distracting and noisy for almost the whole time I was there. It's just a movie for crying out loud I still was able to enjoy the movie but that was a horrible experience and now I only go on weekdays when no holidays are coming up less people in the theaters makes it more enjoyable for me even if I walk out not liking the movie

Most of your points are just the same things as I've heard from many others who complain about modern movies before tho I don't blame you.
Also 3:56 old trailers spoil too and do it worse. While today's movie trailers do spoil the movie's context, at least they let the audiences figure out what is going on in the trailer. In old movie trailers, there's this narrator who spoon feeds the plot in the audiences' faces. I get it, social media didn't exist back then, but these people can just go into the movie not knowing the plot. And don't get me started on the GoldenEye trailer. When it comes to trailers that spoil plot twists, GoldenEye did it worse than Terminator: Genisys.

Brando, the industry is broken due to corporate mindset instead of creative mindset. A.I. has also made film makers lazy and movies today look entirely fake. The industry will crash and eventually rise again from the rubble.

Last year for me was interesting as I don’t think it was the best year for film, but I watched so many movies from the past I had never seen that I ended up loving and did so many new things in life such as go to Europe, meet new friends, create art, read, and be with family. I think not always focusing on the newest thing is great as it allows you to appreciate the things you already have even more.

7:33 Yes. Thank you! I don't mind movies dealing with political corruption, racism, sexism, xenophobia, homophobia, war and social commentary but I wanted to entertained when I watch a movie and not be lectured (Even if I agree with what they are lecturing about).
What's also sad is that when you bring that up they'll accuse you of being a right winger, a conservative, racist/sexism/homophobic Trump supporter with no evidence. I don't like Trump, but to be honest I don't care about politics and I don't affiliate with either side. Half of my views are liberal and half my views are conservative. Both parties suck. I go to watch movies for escapism and entertainment. Do I want a movie to insult my intelligence? Of course not. But I don't want to be lectured either. Nothing wrong with having movies deal with political corruption, racism, sexism, xenophobia, homophobia, and war or being realistic, but don't get preachy with it.

There are far more original movies released each year than you are giving the industry credit for. The problem is not that they aren't making them, it's that they don't back them. Independent reviewers such as yourself can help inform the general public of these movies by doing some research and seeking them out. A video like this does nothing but turn people off to the industry which in the long run does more harm than good. I agree, the blockbusters and sequels could be better, but it's those movies that give the studios the money to make the smaller films.
