The acting by the three main cast members, as well as by Murray Hamilton (the mayor) was phenomenal. They are the reason I've watched the movie so many times.
Damn, I wonder what would happen if somebody made a really, really, really bad movie that praises Tarantino as the greatest MOVIE maker of all time? I guess he will explode and implode at the same time. Somehow.
I watched "Jaws" back then at age seven and the three became instantly my favorite actors from childhood.

supposedly George Millius wrote Shaws speech about the Indianapolis in the galley.
Sterling Hayden turned it down, he could have been great, but he was 6' 5" so they would've needed a bigger boat.
John Williams was so instrumental to the success of Jaws and Star Wars. When Spielberg and Lucas first saw their films with his score added, they must have been in such awe. In the theater, his first musical notes to those movies just grabbed the audience, and you knew you were watching something VERY special.
The music was the only aspect of Star Wars that George Lucas was not disappointed with.

Williams made Star Wars and Lucas but not Spielberg. Jaws would be fine even without the iconic theme by Williams.
@@DaLlAs-k29-abFTxmUI51 I respectfully disagree. Certainly for the first half of Jaws, Williams' music IS the shark. Spielberg had a nightmare with the mechanical shark failing and was forced to use tricks and our imagination to fill in the fact there was no visible shark. The music became very , very famous as a leitmotif for the shark; and John Williams deservedly won the Oscar for best score. The score undoubtedly saved Spielberg's film, and provides 90% of the suspense. Without the music Spielberg would have been in real trouble.
And again, in Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Williams came up with an utterly amazing score. The famous five note main theme is instantly recognisable, and the score is intensely moving, scary, and wonderful - sometimes all of these things at the same time. Williams lost the Oscar for this score to himself for Star Wars.
Missing the dud that is 1941 his next film score with Spielberg was Raiders of the Lost Ark. The music makes the film bigger and better, and the heroic main film is instantly recognisable.
Then there is E.T. which again won him the Oscar. This film score is so important to the success of that film with an absolutely soaring main theme.
All of these themes were hugely successful and are instantly recognisable as linked to each film, and each of these scores is masterly and makes the films infinitely better.
Cinematic perfection and I never get bored of watching it.

Jaws evokes a primal horror in people. Being hunted and eaten by a giant beast is one of our oldest fears. Jaws really taps into that sense of helplessness and dread.
Plus it's happening in the ocean, which is not humans' natural habitat, which makes it even scarier.
Never felt any fear while watching Jaws. To me was never effective.
@@MrCarpen7er Well, it's hard to get scared by a shark movie when you're sitting in your living room. Maybe try a change of scenery and go out on the ocean in a boat by yourself at night and watch it? :) Regardless, the movie is good for other reasons besides fear.

The opening night time shark attack is shocking and disturbing.
The actress was saying "it hurts!" for real.
I've been telling everyone I know that Jaws is the greatest movie ever made and they always say, "that movie about the shark?" I tell them it's not about the shark. It's about the people and how they deal with the terror. You only actually see the shark for, maybe, five minutes. The rest is the dialogue between, and action of the people that are dealing with an unknown terror. The way Brodie contends with the Islanders, the Mayor, his bumbling deputies and his wife and kids is spectacular. When Quint tells his story about the USS Indianapolis, I have to tell everyone to shut up and listen to it. You just can't stop watching this movie!
Peter Benchley's book was more about the boredom, frustration and resentment seething beneath the seemingly tranquil surface of a small-town American holiday resort. The shark was just the catalyst that brings it all to the surface and upends everybody's life. I've always thought that the movie never made as much of that aspect of the story as it might have done.
yeah, too bad nobody cares about your opinion. I have the same problem. Nobody gives a shit what I think. It's like you have to be Tarantino or something, for people to care.
About the same reason Jurassic Park was so good as well. It's about how the characters deal with the situation, the dialogue, subject matter of the dialogue being the technology and the responsibility they have to it, and you barely see any dinosaurs.
I agree but id go even further and say that jaws is the only movie where i see the town as being alive, its like no one is acting in this, almost to the point of having a documentary about everyday lives in this town,but its a movie. Its absolutely genius
Agree. I’ve been saying this about Jaws (greatest movie ever) since I experienced it with crowds back in 1975. The acting, dialogue, and scenes flow like a slice of life. The editing was superb. The music, gut-wrenching. Everything just feels like you’re watching a real event play out. Yes, there’s unspeakable horror, but there is actually a LOT of humor in Jaws. This is one of only 2 movies I’ve ever seen that got TWO standing ovations from the audience (the original 1977 Star Wars being the other). I saw it happen for all 5 viewings I had of Jaws in ‘75, in different cities, too. Why would a movie audience give a film a standing ovation? The actors aren’t present. The film crew and Director aren’t present. There’s no one there to take a bow and receive the standing ovation. The reason? It has to be that the audience was just SO thrilled by what it just experienced that it felt COMPELLED to give a standing ovation. Twice. It was a positive experience despite the horror aspect. And what an experience it was in the summer of 1975 at the movie theaters!
Jaws also aged well, given the pandemic actually validated fully what was - for me - the hardest part to believe, which was that incredibly obtuse mayor who refused to close the beaches. Now I watch it and I'm like, "oh yea, that guy. Yup, that's actually how society works, A+ Spielberg."
@@jakestine4753 In the Jaws book, there's a whole plot about the Mayor wanting the beaches open for a more nefarious reason. He owes money to the mob and the mob are counting on the summer houses to be filled up to make money from the tourists.
Sadly, there's very rarely any applause at the end of most cinematic experiences!! The last time I saw it happen was Return of the King! Jaws is my favourite film of all time, I would loved to have been there in the summer of '75 to have seen it in its true glory!! (Slight problem, I was born in the summer of '76!! Lol!!)

Yes two Gems of the past. The other two that I attended that got great crowd response were Rocky and Alien.
Robert Shaw was cast so perfectly it's as if the part was written for him, one of my favorite performances in any film by any actor.
I love the way Tarantino speaks. He speaks like a director should speak. He's very direct and straightforward. He's good at explaining things. And he knows what he likes and wants out of a movie.
Ironically, this was the most frustration clip as he didn't explain a thing.

I'm still trying to understand Jaws is the greatest movie but Steven Spielberg's greatest movie is Temple of Doom.
Jaws is showing in my local cinema. Cant wait to see it on the big screen.

back when the big theaters were in lockdown, the mom and pop theater in my town showed Jaws Ghostbusters and the 4 Indiana Jones movies. it was a fun couple of weeks in the summer
1. The interviewers should’ve asked Tarantino what’s the difference between movie and film lol.
2. Kudos to Tarantino for loving Temple of Doom. Watch people start loving that movie all of a sudden now.
The whole “Tarantino endorsement” thing always boggled my mind.
The first time I noticed it was back in 1994, the year that both Forrest Gump and Pulp Fiction were released.
Gump went ballistic at the box office throughout the summer, which of course was followed by a backlash.
When Pulp Fiction hit the big screen, moviegoing audiences were divided by which one they preferred, resulting in Pulp Fiction versus Forrest Gump.
Cool kids liked Pulp Fiction, whereas dorks and old farts liked Forrest Gump.
Yeah, it was stupid, but…whatever.
It was that way until Tarantino said that he liked Forrest Gump, so suddenly Forrest Gump was Cool.
JAWS is a movie. Raiders of the Lost Ark is a movie. Star Wars is a movie. Fun, popcorn entertainment. The Godfather is a FILM. Once Upon a Time in America is a FILM. 2001: A Space Odyssey is a FILM. Much more serious tones telling serious stories, and crafted like a celluloid Sistine Chapel. JAWS is a movie crafted like a serious film because its director took it seriously and instinctively understood how to elevate a slasher movie to greatness.

A film is far more concerned with aesthetics, with how movement, light, and sound will emotionally engage and intellectually stimulate the audience. A movie is more concerned with plot and easy answers. A film attempts to convey or explore something larger than itself.
Marvel makes movies. Films are shown at Cannes.

I think all Tarantino needed to add was "Do you grab popcorn while hanging from your seat?" I agree with his distinction -- a movie like Jaws packs in so much crafted entertainment, laughs, horrors and surprises, i.e., the total damn package -- exactly like Tarantino means.

Man, I have said this for years. Of all the great movies I have ever seen, Jaws is the one I will call the best if forced to choose. I love to watch the younger generation, raised on CGI and the content they call movies these days, react to Jaws. They are floored. Even with a few of the more obvious rubber shark bits, the movie not only holds up but shows how it's done. The audiences in 1975 must have just lost their minds.
The whole country did. 1975 was referred to as the "summer of the shark" because of the public interest and fear inspired by the film. It was a genius mass marketing tactic. Pick a subject that fascinates and terrifies people, and then make it as good as you possibly can.
I didn’t see it until around 1978 or 1979 on HBO at my cousins’ house, but when it was still in the theaters and I was about 4 years old, I remember having vivid nightmares just from hearing my older sister talking about Jaws.
It's a good film that holds up fine, but modern viewers are very rarely going to be floored by it. Solid handiwork but not something mindblowing to people who have watched all the films inspired by it in the decades since.
I remember seeing it on TV as a 6 yr old kid...and I was terrified everytime i got in the bathtub for about a month, like a shark was somehow going to be in the water. 🤣 Then my mom bought me a rubber qreat white shark and a toy boat to play with, after that i didn't want to get out of the tub.
@@radicalstanza3614 For me, more tension and drama were created with a few notes of music than in all of the Marvel movies combined. I seriously doubt many of the movies today will be remembered 50 years from now.
I never actually saw the movie JAWS as a kid in the '70s, only saw the commercials and highlight clips on tv, yet it had such an impact on the culture it made everyone, including me, look at beaches and lakefronts differently! I never saw it (until the early 90s) but it still made me afraid of the water!!?!
Legend says that there is a movie already in existence that Quentin hasn't seen yet.
Back To The Future also falls into the category of a perfect movie......They are rare.....Maybe also An American Warewolf In London.
Appearing on the same panel as Spielberg was the closest Quentin's ever come to shy and retiring. He'd respond to any questions with his usual gusto, but otherwise he was clearly showing deference to one of the few human beings who might know even more about movies than him
It's a movie that's split into two parts, firstly it establishes the sleepy island with it's ordinary people going about their business that are subjugated to a deadly overgrown predator where we see some horrific attacks and that brings tension between chief Brody and the mayor who is in denial and wants to keep the beaches open for money.
And the second part is the three brilliantly cast gritty characters that play a game of cat and mouse with the deadly shark and soon realising they are out of their depth
Which makes for a really interesting and enthralling movie.
The structure of the film is interesting because it has what you just said, but it also has the traditional 3 act set up with Brody fighting to keep the beaches open by himself, then Hooper comes to town & is an ally for him, & then they go out on the Orca for the hunt.
Director Bryan Singer said Jaws is the perfect mix of "An Enemy of the People" with "Moby Dick."

No movie has made a greater impact on society than Jaws. I can’t tell you the number of people I have met that are scared of the ocean because of watching Jaws, myself included.

Swimming pools, legs or arms hanging off the bed ! It was that bad ! Im 58, went to HHI a few yrs ago. went out to waist deep and came back in. I know whats in that ocean and I'm good !
To be fair I think people were scared of sharks before this movie, it’s probably the reason it was made but yes it took it to a whole new level.

I saw Jaws when I was a little kid back in the early 80's and was instantly a life long fan. I've seen it countless times and still watch it at least twice a year
Spielberg is just ridiculous. You can say the same for Jurassic Park. Not to mention ET and Schindler’s List. Raiders, Temple, Holy Grail. Close Encounters. Saving Private Ryan. Just insane.
Jaws was like Terminator. They gave a guy a shot at making a B movie, not knowing the guy in the chair was going to be one of the GOAT's and they made one of the best movies ever.
That dinner scene in Temple is up there with mos eisley cantina in terms of most memorable scene from my childhood theatrical experiences.
Spielberg cast "Grady" from The Shining to be in that scene, and if I remember correctly, he wearing gold and red, like the colors of the rooms in his scenes with Jack Torrance. I still haven't figured it out, but I think there's a symbolic meaning there. In Raiders, Spielberg hired the actor who fist fights Barry Lyndon to be the Nazi who fights Indy around the out of control airplane.
Hell yeah!! Temple of Doom!! Everyone always looks at me funny when I say I love Temple of Doom. Now it's me and Quentin. This made my day!

I think it suffered back in the 80's on Home Video because it loses a lot in 4x3 presentation, which was standard. When they finally released the widescreen DVD's, like in 2002 or whenever, it was a whole new experience again, i felt like i did when i was a kid in the theater seeing it.

its my favorite Spielberg film too, its Metal and Gnarly, Short Round is a great side kick. People complain about Willy but i think her reactions were mostly justified seeing how she was trapped in a living nighmare horror show. she represents civilized folk
My mom and dad took the family to see this at the Tilton movie theater in Northfield, NJ at the end of the summer 1975. I was 8. I’ll never forget being in that packed movie theater , it was an experience. I agree with Tarantino, even to this day it really can’t be beat.
Totally agree i was lucky enough to see Spielbergs 3D rejig of Jaws last year & it was absolutely amazing, love both versions of the film/movie. 10/10

Saw Jaws the summer it opened at the Comet Drive In theater. So awesome!
Probably my favorite movie ever. I will watch it whenever I see it on tv no matter how far into it . I always seem to find something new in the performances. I think another movie that comes close is Sling Blade. The first time I watched it I didn’t feel like I was watching a scripted movie but a documentary about the lives of people in a small southern town. Thorton crafted a masterpiece.
Scared people out of the water, pools included.
I remember being in summer camp at the pool. Went under and looked into the deep end, and I instantly thought of Jaws !! Impact of that movie of immense !!
I was nine years old when my babysitter took me and my cousin to watch Jaws at the theater. That was the first time I ever seen a movie on the big screen. When I went home, I was scared to get out of my bed because I thought sharks were under, my bed. You are not exaggerating. That movie changed the way people thought about the ocean.

I was about 13 when I saw JAWS, and I was already a huge shark buff for most of my childhood.
Anyway, yeah - I clearly remember many people, many adults being afraid in pools, and even the shower or bath.

When he says "greatest movie" he means a supremely crafted motion picture solely designed to put mass bums on seats, to glue bums to seats, a no-piss picture, can't take your eyes off the screen, that has all the studio execs grinning with glee because they know their jobs are safe (for now). I totally get what he's saying here, I just cannot agree on his favourite Spielberg film. Temple Of Doom??? No way. Close Encounters all the way for me!
You're spot on. Film is moving pictures as an artistic expression first and foremost. Movie is moving pictures as a spectacle first and foremost.

I've recently watched Spielberg's debut, "Duel", and it blew my mind how much he managed to do with such a simple premise. The man is a genius, hands down.

So glad to hear Quentin Tarantino list Temple of Doom. So many are down on that picture but I’ve never seen anything create a sense of place as well, save a couple of Ridley Scott pictures.
I saw jaws for the first time recently. I went to a 3D midnight showing and it was the best movie I'd seen in years😂
That 3D conversion is incredible, particularly the shots in the water and it makes one realize how varied and dynamic are the camera angles when the film gets to the Orca.
Love QT’s never ending enthusiasm when he talks about films. I saw JAWS as a kid at the drive-in back in 1975. Will never forget seeing the mechanical “Bruce” on that giant screen with everyone in the lot gasping and screaming in unison. Great memories.

There is honestly no telling how many times I have seen Jaws. It might also be the best marketing of a film of all time as well. It's right up there with Psycho in terms of that. Even the poster for it is absolutely iconic. The soundtrack is world renowned. The dialog is memorable. It's just everything you could want in a movie and it's especially incredible when you consider the fact that it has such mass appeal and it's basically a horror movie in the grand scheme of things.
After 49 years its still a masterpiece, Brody, Hooper, and Quint are legends on how to become the character, but if you look at all supporting cast they all are just as good. The Mayor, Murry Hamilton played that part so superbly that you can almost feel sorry for him cuz he was in an impossible situation, yet he did not come off as creepy.

Spielberg is pretty similar to Tarantino in that way, they made movies that passioned them when they were younger. So Spielberg saw all those 50s and 60s big genre movies like 2000 Leagues Under Sea, etc...and updated them. Quentin grew up on Grindhouse stuff and that was his inspiration so he brought that vibe to the mainstream.
I have watched Jaws every July 4th weekend for almost 40 years now. EVERY single time I get excited before putting it on and even more excited if I am introducing to someone for the 1st time. The only thing I love more than Jaws are my kids....barely...

I agree. I’d also say Jaws is probably the most influential movie ever made.
Why? Because Jaws scared the crap out of people, around the world…and to top it off, that fear still exists.
If it is the point of movies to leave an impression on you, to manipulate you, emotionally, I can’t think of a single move that even comes close to having had that affect.
Id say 'wizard of oz' is the most influencial/referenced film ever made. But I'd jaws over it every day of the week
@@joeodonnell921 The wizard of Oz had the advantage of using technicolor on a scale never seen before. It's sort of like Jurassic Park using CGI. The technology alone just blew peoples minds. And both of those movies are epic in their own right. But to me the score to Jaws alone is maybe the most influential movie effect of all time.
It's nowhere near the most influential ever made, it is just one of the more commercially succesfully ones. It doesn't really have anything new.
@@quarantinetheater5612 taking away the technical side, story structure like picking up companions on the journey and someone behind the curtain pulling the strings can kind of be lead back to wizard of Oz. How many times do you watch something and it'll be referenced from "I don't think we're in Kansas anymore" "follow the yellow brick road" and plenty more, the films quoted or referenced constantly.
@@joeodonnell921 I’m not saying Oz isn’t up there near the top…I’m saying Jaws actually influenced people’s behavior about going into the ocean. And I’m only referencing its influence on the public. Not on future movie making. The reason why Jaws had the bigger impact IMO is that the subject matter exists in reality. Most of us have been in the ocean…and most of us are terrified of sharks.
I couldn’t agree more and that is why I watch it once sometimes twice a year for the last two decades, I don’t know why but I think it has something to do with capturing everything I ever loved about cinema Close Encounters does this as well, sure Spielberg knows how to get bums in seats and make money but that to me isn’t an excuse to say that what he’s does is somehow not art because it absolutely is. Every frame of Jaws, Close Encounters, Raiders, E.T are burned into my psyche forever there is not one scene that ever feels wasted in his movies.
Yup. I feel really fortunate to have been a kid during the Speilberg/Lucas Golden Age. Those movies were my life, lol.
@@DanielHBuchmann Absolutely, I was a 90s kid but was really an 80s kid at heart, raised on vhs movies and feel lucky to had lived in a pre-internet pre-social media world, it pains me that nobody today won't really get to experience what that was like there was just something different in air.

I wonder what Quentin would think of the Indy book "Benchley". It isn't just another Jaws story, it really takes a step back and brings it all closer to reality. Tarantino is one of a kind.

I compare Tarantino movies to the rest. From top to bottom they’re always superior. Everyone tells Quintin he’s the best because he is the best. Everybody isn’t wrong.
Jaws is full-on visual thrills! The shark POV, Spielberg putting his camera INTO the eyes, mind and soul of the shark, making US the audience the shark, unable to avoid closing in on OUR prey, coupled with John Williams' primordial thump thump, is genius.

Quentin won me over years ago with his explanation in several of his films, I was won over decacdes ago with jaws, my friend and I would play in a field of water settlement, and say we were going to make movies The rubber sharks we blew up, and the mosquito bites we had...Damn , I was so wanting to be in a quinton movie after I saw him and my man george clooney. Let me tell you this, I dont watch anything anymore, but mr Quentin will always get a standing ovation from me as long as I can stand.

20000 leagues under the sea is also one of the best movies ever just the attack at the end from squid monster is so epic and detailed. It's a classic movie.

Jaws and The Terminator have been neck and neck in my number 1 spot for years now. The chemistry between Brody, Quint, and Hooper is magical.
I remember seeing it that first time in the theatre. The opening scene takes place at night so you don't even see (spoiler alert) the shark, you just hear it all. Absolutely terrifying helplessness.
I wish i was old enough to have seen 3 movies in the Cinema to see the audiences reaction.

I agree with Quentin. It's as perfect a movie as you can get. I will disagree that Jaws is just a "movie". It's one of the rare movies that can also be called a "film". I saw Jaws in the theater in 1975, 1976, 1979 (theatrical re-release), 1981 (dollar theater) and 2011 (NBCUniversal employee screening) and it's still my favorite movie of all time.
It absolutely is a film. Watch the scene where Quint is introduced closely. The drawing of the shark appears on the blackboard instantly due to an intentional continuity error, and the nails on the chalkboard sound hits the audience's subconscious as a warning, just like the profile of a shark triggers something deep within us. Spielberg does something similar with the spiders in Raiders which appear on Indy's back suddenly, like the shark drawing in Jaws. That's one of many ways Spielberg and other directors like Kubrick 'mark' symbolic elements in their films - with things that look to the casual observer like simple mistakes.
I loved Temple of Doom also. It was hilarious, and was my favorite out of the Indian Jones movies.
Roy Scheider and Richard Dreyfuss...not so shabby either, buddy. I see it as a total 3-headed performance, with all 3 of them at the top of their game!

'77--- Star Wars, Smokey and the Bandit, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Saturday Night Fever, Annie Hall.
'78--- Grease, Halloween, Animal House, Superman, The Deer Hunter.
I'm partial because I was the perfect age (10-14 yrs. old) during this time. Theaters were packed. Truly the golden age.
Plus…Network, Taxi Driver, etc. 👍
I’d extend this to the beginning of the 70s then you have Chinatown, The French Connection, The Exorcist and so on.

The movie is so endlessly quotable. I still quote it all the time. Mostly Robert Shaws lines. Man was a force of nature. As to favorite Spielberg movie? Probably Jaws or Saving Private Ryan or Jurassic Park. I was prime age when JP came out and i loved it instantly.
Seeing JP in the theater in its original run was pretty special. That T-Rex scene, wow.
Jaws was a shocker. It has genuine horror elements which scared me. The opening attack on the girl in the beginning horrified me. That damn Shark bit her legs off and there was nothing she could do to defend herself. She was helpless in the water. What a monster!
Jaws had great ominous theme music by the amazing John Williams. Once you heard it you knew an attack was coming.

My dad saw Jaws in the cinema when it came out, said it was great.
This move single handedly decreased the amount of people who go into the ocean and as a result the amount of people who get attacked by sharks...

I want to see Tarantino's version of Logan's Run. I hope after he makes his final theatrical film he starts making all sorts of interesting streaming movies and shows. He'll be able to choose any project he wants whenever he wants for the rest of his life and he's basically going to be given an unlimited budget to do it.
