Yes, shelters are filled with cats that have been dropped off due to problems from declawing. An acquaintance of mine bought her cat from a breeder and then had her declawed and she never used the litter box again so she was dropped off at the shelter. 2 other cats I know were the friendliest cats you'd ever meet but became skittish and afraid of everyone but their owners after being declawed. I hope everyone shares this video and reads comments like yours so our culture can begin to change.

i agree that most vets don't like declawing. They don't do it for the money - they do it because that is one less homeless cat that will get euthanized at the pound. "No kill" shelters are a grand idea but they get full and stay full. And guess where the cats they turn away go? The pound.

I'm also lucky that the carpet on the stairwell is the industrial strength kind so it's very resistent to their nail sharpening as well. Love your videos. Always puts a smile on my face.

Six years ago I found a full-grown cat hunkered down under some shelving in our garage. He was of unknown age and had been fixed, and ALL FOUR of his paws had been declawed. We live way out in the boonies so it was obvious that the poor thing was someone's pet that had been abandoned. We already had three other rescued cats, so what was one more? We still have him today. He's loving to us but very wary of other people and downright petrified of other cats, often to the point of vomiting. He prefers to stay in our bedroom and gets visibly nervous whenever the door is opened. We are careful not to let the other cats into his space. He's a pretty needy feline and is unable to sleep through the night. I've owned scores of cats and was always able to socialize them to eachother...until this one. I knew the declawing affected him -- he can't hunt, climb trees or even defend himself, but I now believe it's likely the reason behind many of his unique personality quirks.

  • @luceafarul579

My parents thought about declawing my cat but thankfully I was able to stop them. This was before I knew about the amputation thing and the cruelty of it all but the reason then for me was 1. I would be missing out so much of the joy of cat behavior such as climbing, 2. It's way too expensive. My cat didn't end up scratching furnitures at all and we do have leather sofas, which she did damage a little bit not by scratching it but by jumping on it with her claws out for landing (leather furniture are especially slippery). We got another set of leather dining chairs and there isn't a scratch on them. Secret? Exactly like the person said here: lots of love to your cat. how to do that? Well other than giving food and petting them, you HAVE to play with them! Play as much as you can especially when they are young. Play with them until you tire them out, and play on and around the scratching posts and cat trees. Then they would not scratch your furniture because they would be imprinted on those cat things. Cats are very possessive and territorial so they will mark things that are theirs and ignore other things and distinguish between them. Don't declaw, work for your animal's affections and ease into your life.

First time I heard about declawing I thought someone was talking about the Victorian Age, had no idea it was a modern thing, aargh.

    • @zakaryrodgers1589
      @zakaryrodgers1589 8 років тому

Oh yeah it's modern. I had a cat that I adopted from the human society once upon a time. She was very insecure and couldn't defend herself at all. So I had to always keep her inside. I tried to give her the best home and environment for the remainder of her life; which surpassed well over 15 years. I can truly say if she was never declawed she definitely would of been more confident , less needy and more self- reliant, it's like taking something in life you will always use, like our thumbs and trying to live as normally as possible. Sad but true. I'm glad you gained some insight:)

agree 100% on your take on the scratching matter.
I have noticed that when my cat was forced to live indoor 24/7 after a life-saving surgery, she started scratching furniture - which she had never done before.
Now that she can go outside as much as she wants and play country cat, preying mice and birds and climbing trees and roofs, she has no interest in scratching my sofa and uses pretend-scratching as blackmail when no one pays attention to her for too long: in fact she stands still in the scratching position up until someone turns back and says "no!" and then she comes to you and rubs herself against you with the Ice-Melting Gaze Of Doom.

They need to be trained as kittens to allow you to comfortably clip the nails. Or with my little guy, I usually get him when he's napping or just woke up. When he's already calm it goes more smoothly. But lots of love, 'good job' motivation, and treats right after help too.

TIP - if your cat is clawing the bed, get a largish scrap of carpet (mine is about 3 feet by 4 feet) and tuck it between the mattress and the box spring so it hangs down over the box spring like a bed ruffle. Tuck all blankets and bedspreads in. Ari Cat loves his Clawing Thing and will not claw anything else - this is also more stable than small scratching posts. A long one that runs all the way the length of the bed can even look nice if you replace it periodically once it's frayed.

Man I just realized so much from this video. So when I was still really young, maybe 8 or 9 years old, my family and I moved to a new home. I wanted to get a cat for myself and my parents agreed to get me a cat but only if I got a kitten, took care of him, and they were unmoving on the final condition, which was having his front paws declawed. I really didn't wanna do that when I was a kid but I thought it would have been a huge deal but it was, and that's one thing I wish I'd never let them do. I was a kid, I didn't know anything. but years later being in this damn place I was in, my cat began using anywhere else but the litter box and we couldn't get the cat to stop doing that and we had to eventually give him up. But I share the story here so hopefully nobody will ever do that again. For any humans reading this, try taking you first knuckle of every finger and tell me how well you do things like that because you can't. If you wouldn't willingly remove your finger nails to the first knuckle in your fingers, then you dare to it to a cat. How the hell is this even legal in the United States??

Great video. I'm sadly the owner of a declawed cat, the previous owners had to give him up after they moved, and they had him declawed for.. what ever reason, we never found out why. He tends to get bullied by our other clawed cat because he can't play/fight back. :c Even so, he's a sweety and still tries to use the cat tree scratch post.

I have a friend who used a sisal scratching surface mounted on a wood pole. He let the cats wear out the sisal and then they started clawing the wood beneath it. They then started clawing just about every wooden surface in the house.
Please, make sure you have the necessary skills/desire to replace the sisal before buying one of these scratching posts. I prefer cardboard scratchers myself, but I also don't blame a cat I've invited into my house if they start going after some stray cardboard boxes.
My favorite training method is to dope the scratching cardboard item with catnip - some come with it - then put the cat on the scratcher, and gently grab their paws and make scratching motions with their paws to give them the idea. I do the same when introducing a new litter box, or new type/brand of litter.

THANK YOU!!! I can't abide the concept of declawing (why get a cat if you're going to change the cat to become something else???), and I'm thankful to live in Australia, where it's illegal. These are all brilliant tips :)
I've never really had a problem with cats scratching furniture, but then they've always had wooden boxes, hammocks, scratch pads, and all sorts of other things to play with and scratch on (all the things you suggest, actually, plus hammocks). If they're secure and have their own stuff to scratch, they'll leave the furniture alone.
It's all about learning how cats think and why they do what they do, and accommodating it. And if someone would even CONSIDER declawing, they should really just stick with stuffed toys.

  • @lemon-pop2923
    @lemon-pop2923 10 років тому +7

Declawing is NOT the best solution. A cat's only weapon of defense to defend themselves from rival cats (mostly males), dogs, and others they deem a threat. This is especially dangerous if you have an outside cat and even more if its a non-neutered male. Males that have not been neutered mark their territories for potential mates and/or often get into fights with other males. If you declaw your cat (male or female) what you're doing is making your beloved kitty more vulnerable. Which explains why cats become more aggressive. Their only other weapons to defend are hissing, scratching, and making themselves appear bigger. Which are not usually effective when a cat is in a tight jam. Unless you declaw your cat for a good reason for its health it's not recommended. You as an owner must observe and understand why your cat is scratching your furniture and have alternative solutions.

I had my 14 years cat declawed when he was almost one because he constantly scratched my 4 years old son while playing. This is the cruelest thing I have ever done in my life. I didn't know that they amputate the toes, and I hate myself for listening to the vet. Please when it comes to your pets, research more before listening to the vets.

Declawing, is an operation to surgically remove an animal's claws by means of the amputation of all or part of the distal phalanges, or end bones, of the animal's toes.

We got my Norwegian Forest Cat declawed when he was a kitten, it literally did traumatize him for life. He's a big cat, it's sad to see his little stubby paws because they amputated too much. I remember having to bring him home and soak his paws in water then carefully cut through the blood matted fur on his paws while he kept crying and squirming. It was terrible, I mean, it was DEFINITELY the vet's fault, but I will never NEVER get another cat declawed.

Any Vet that does declaw a cat, is only and I mean only interested in the money! Once a Vet told me that he would rather declaw a cat so it would have a home...that is so WRONG! The Vet could have taken the time to explain to the new owners what it is like and what their cat actually goes through...all the pain, and when they do get older, even scratching the littler really hurts them, hence they will start not going the kitty pan. I tell people they should have their first knuckles and finger nails taken off...THAT USUALLY STOPS THEM IN THEIR TRACKS! Let all humans start being gentle and loving to these wonderful creatures that God has made! Thanks.

How can vets dock dogs' tails when it's totally unnecessary? Or how about dog's ears being trimmed? All kinds of unnecessary surgeries are performed on animals simply for aesthetic reasons. At least declawing a cat serves a purpose.

Vets do it for money. There's a lot of people who do it because they're told by the vet: "It'll save your furniture, it'll protect your children." Cats, believe it or not, can learn not to scratch people and/or furniture sometimes with some light scolding. My cat has never scratched me after as a kitten I scolded him lightly for scratching him a few times, now he does play with my hand/fingers, but keeps his claws sheathed. And/or give you warning signs they want to be left alone without ever leaving a mark. One cat I found was growling and hissing at a kid, but when I came back later and sweet talked him over, I found him as playful as my cat at home who is like a huge dog when it comes to having attention, and he loved having his stomach rubbed. Do you think he'd act that way if he was declawed? I wouldn't have even met him because he spent his time outside.
My vet suggested it, but I flat-out refused. Even though my cat is an indoor cat, I don't want him to go through that trauma.

    • @marylawrenz
      @marylawrenz 10 років тому +2

If you go to a vet who tries to talk you into an unneeded procedure, you need to change vets. And what does declawing have to do with a cat's behavior? I've had cats that weren't declawed and were declawed and they all had their own individual personalities. That's what is great about cats. I live in an area where it is not safe for our year-round and migratory birds to have cats outdoors. And please don't tell me you can teach a cat not to go after a bird. Also, outdoor cats have to contend with skunks, opossums, raccoons, coyotes and the occasional bobcat. After a correct declawing procedure, a cat has tender paws for less than a week and then a lifetime of happiness. Or would you prefer that cats not be spayed or neutered because it will cause them trauma?

    • @marylawrenz
      @marylawrenz 10 років тому +1

+++ Declawing and trimming the nails of the cat is like cutting a person's hand! it is a sheer vandalism , that person's life turns into nightmare and hell! You bring a tremendous suffer and pain and depression for the cat. they are speechless ,so people never notice what excruciating pain bring to the poor cat !! Is this what you want? bring joy and pleasure for yourself out of animal pain , suffer and misery !!?Cats need their claws for :cleaning, eating, catching, playing, holding, grabbing, climbing, scratching their own body, defending, and so many other things! If you do that it means you not only killed the cat but also you give the cat excruciating pain for the rest of it's life!! IT IS BETTER TO KILL THEM RATHER THAN TRIMMING THEIR NAILS!! Their natural life depends largely on their beautiful claws and nails , they may seem very small but the task they do is bigger than the animal itself ! if you deprive them from having it ,it means absolute ignorance and selfishness, barbaric and..! what would it be like if you feel scratch your body but you don't have hands to do that!? well it is the same for cats!
It is an unforgivable crime against nature !and the nature will soon punish you for that! I have seen so many people which were cruel to animal especially cats ,and later in life they were the target of so many invisible devilish energy that drove them to state of craziness and madness directly or indirectly to the person or the members of his or her beloved family!! Do you still think declawing a cat is good!!? Ok, if you or your beloved family want to turn into a mad and psycho people in the future and be hospitalize for that,go a head!!be my guest.
Cats or other animals can't speak when they suffer! like man they feel pain and suffer, and this brings us more responsibility and carefulness .we have to treat them like we treat olds or kids people:gently with respect.,even when we give them food or walk in front of them;gently and with respect . only people with deep spirituality and understanding understand this. Ordinary people(which unfortunately are overwhelmingly countless among us) don't get what it is all about and may even laugh at what i am saying!
So leave them alone, open your eyes and learn from them, just look at them when they are at sleep:like children?! and every time they sleep in different places ! it means they are not dependent to anything ! no dependance = less worry and more calm . If you are not deppendent to anything you enjoy more from your life ! Yes? .they are great teachers for miserable human being. For those who think trimming the animals nails is good for them! NO! BE SMART,YOU ARE HURTING THE INNOCENT ANIMAL IN A BAD WAY!!
1st, stay away from vets and physicians and paid agents and advertisers ! they only care about your packet money and no matter what !! they not only are reluctant to cure your pets or yourself but also they try to add more problems to see you again and again!! don't be foolish! they make things seem very complicated and difficult to understand in order to distraught people, when people are distraught they can easily cheat them and keep their business running !!THEY SPREAD UNTRUE BULLSHITS AMONG PEOPLE ABOUT MAINTAINING THE HEALTH OF THEIR PETS TO ENCOURAGE THEM TO SEEK AND ACCEPT THEIR SERVICES AND TOOLS JUST TO EMPTY THEIR PACKET MONEY AND TO BRING THE POOR ANIMAL UNNECESSARY MENTAL AND PHYSICAL SUFFER AN PAIN.! it is them and various companies who control your thought! It is now the time to tell them NO and refresh your thought. The matters are very simple if you are awake !! the fact is that you are sleeping and hypnotized and conditioned by bad people and big companies and you don't know that you don't know!! try to get back to yourself by meditating . Your thoughtless behavior &foolishness along with selfishness has made the earth look like this!!!
The way the animals trim their own nails is much different from that of human's method . The way they trim , just make the claws and the muscles under the nails stronger and stronger and make the claws bigger and more powerful! actually they don't cut the nails short! cat nails don't need to be trimmed - they rip of the upper layer themselves to bring up the sharper layer up... (that's the reason they put their claws into everything to lose the upper layer which most people find annoying when their furniture or cloth is going to waste...) cats need their claws sharpened at all time in order to feel safe while jumping, running and climbing around , the sharper the nails ,the healthier the cat is- if you want your cat to feel unsecure feel free to give your cat to an owner with some brain..
the growing nail is not meant to be cut,it is the nature trick to force the animals to work on their claws and make them strong ,it means to urge the animals to strengthen the claws and nails [like when we go to body building club to make our body strong] and always maintain it's form and shape as it should be because animals need strong claws for ordinary daily life and if they do nothing, their nails and claws go weak and they couldn't survive at the very stage and beginning of their existence!! now you guys understand how stupid you have been so far?!! ... , It is stupid if you help animals with their natural needs, it may work in the short period of time but in the long run, it causes all kinds of abnormalities and problems, and it is your fault and you must be held responsible! Your friendship to animal reminds me of a story . a man and a bear were very good friends, one day the man was sleeping and a fly was sitting on the face of the man disturbing him ,when the bear saw the fly sitting on man's face,he became very angry because he likes the man very much, the bear takes off a big stone nearby and throw it towards the fly to kill it, not knowing he kills his friend too! , poor bear inadvertently killed the man because he wanted just to kill the fly!,, And your friendship to animals is like this story.
If we see an ingrown nail , it is your fucking fault because you didn't provide anything good enough for cats to go and have their nails managed by themselves! And for those who trim to protect themselves from cat scratch, i have to say , there are other people that even if their body turn into red and black from cat scratch, they don't even have a single imagination to cut the cat nails short.
Cats never scratch anyone unless they feel danger or provoked?
I have had cats for 20 years but not even a small scratch on my body! actually my cats love me, and when sometimes they are angry with me they hit me with their palms softly ,not with nails!! they are very knowledgable. And lets say they scratch you, do you think it is bad? no! it is good, it is a kind of vaccination and make your body's immune system stronger and may one day even save your life! the more scratch ,the more stronger immune system and body! And if you cut the cats nail short to protect your fucking sofa or .. . i have to say put and attach scratching post everywhere especially near sofas . There are better scratching post in the eyes of a cat than sofa . And they are very cheap .for example attach a piece of carpet or junk rug to a heavy wooden board and put it near sofas. You will see cats prefer to scratch them rather than sofas . it is better to choose hollow or drum like materials to attach the carpet because cats like the sound of their scratch very much coming out of the scratching post .
now you see there is a simple key to open every hard door , you just need to have high IQ or consult with people that are smart. And also don't forget to put some hard materials or woods as scratching posts .because cats need the hard ones sometimes to do better nail trimming .Their nails neutralize the pressure to reach to their claws and eventually their hands and feet when they are walking,.they act like hit and pressure absorbents!
Their nails act like heels do with our shoes,. Some people with low IQ think the heels are only located at the bottom !, NO! , sometimes they are on the side parts . So , you don't want to go walking with you shoes heels removed? do you?! if you do when you come back you feel pain all over your feet and if you keep on going out like this your feet gradually will be disabled and lose its proper function! and leads to all kind of diseases ,!
If you trim the nails because to solve one thing ,you should know you add other problems not knowingly and inadvertently! you are doing worse in order to prevent bad!! By trimming you practically make claws weaker and weaker because the animals do not have that urge to trim that the nature purposely gave them to keep their claws strong .
and this is very bad so much so that one day they can't even climb up something small because of the weak nails and claws or grab and hold something small!! and if they do it their weak nails will be broken!
By trimming you deprive them from having that strong palms, claws, nails that they used to have!
You the vets and..., don't have any fucking right to encourege people to trim their pets nails ! it is crystal clear that your only intention is to keep your business running no matter what!
People nowadays are more educated than before and they cant be easily deceived ! You sir find some other business ! it is a mistake if you try to find money out of other creatures's pain and suffer !
people must not put their trust on the words of somebody whose business depends on that subject !
It is also the same about physicians too ! .People refer to them to cure one disease ,but they leave the physician's office with several other diseases added including the one they had before ! when you inter to a doctor's office ,immediately he or she starts writing prescription for that patient ! these prescriptions cause the poor person so many side effects and destroys the very fundamental parts of his body and the doctor knows it very well but keeps his or her mouth shut for the sake of business !
I never get sick because i always get away from doctors , the last time i got sick was 25 years ago because i have strong immune system and i always look at the nature more carefully and with virtual magnetic glass if i have and issue which needs attention .
and trimming the nails of the cat is like cutting a person's hand! that person's life turns into nightmare and hell!
(that's the reason they put their claws into everything to lose the upper layer which most people find annoying when their furniture or cloth is going to waste...) cats need their claws sharpened at all time in order to feel safe while jumping, running and climbing around - if you want your cat to feel unsecure feel free to give your cat to an owner with some brain..
the growing nail is not meant to be cut,it is the nature trick to force the animals to work on their claws and make them strong ,it means to urge the animals to strengthen the claws and nails [like when we go to body building club to make our body strong] and always maintain it's form and shape as it should be because animals need strong claws for ordinary daily life and if they do nothing, their nails and claws go weak and they couldn't survive at the very stage and beginning of their existence!! now you guys understand how stupid you have been so far?!! ... , It is stupid if you help animals with their natural needs, it may work in the short period of time but in the long run, it causes all kinds of abnormalities and problems, and it is your fault and you must be held responsible!
And lets say they scratch you, do you think it is bad? no! it is good, it is a kind of vaccination and make your body's immune system strong and may one day even save your life! the more scratch ,the more stronger immune system and body!
Domestication has noting to do with nail trimming.
the animals need their nails sharpened at all time whether they are being taken cared as domesticated animals or free in the wilderness ! if they are domesticated they still need their sharp nails for climbing up and down, scratching their own bodies, walking, defending, playing ,cleaning and killing unwanted intruder insects on their skins, and on top of that ;peace of mind, sense of security,and... ! what if you want to sleep without walls around you?! can you sleep at all !?? what if you are walking in an strange place with so many wired things moving around you and your eye vision is not that good to see them clearly and more important of all , you don't have anything to shield or defend yourself ;no knife , no gun , nothing!!
    """"""""""""""""""""""""how does it look like!?"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""
I really don't know why some people do their best and use any method and means they can get their hand on to justify nail trimming despite all proven facts about it!!
ISNT IT BECAUSE THEY BENEFIT FROM IT !?!,
A cat with no sharp nails is a walking dead cat ! A breathing dead cat!!
Human's behavior is always upside down !!! you should sharp their nails or to help them sharp better not cutting them short !!!!
    STUPIT PEOPLE !!!!?
and about grooming ; grooming just adds to the problem, it makes the animal dependent! it weakens certain vital elements in animals that they need for survival ! let me bring an example , if you water a tree all the time , that tree roots do not feel the urge to grow and reach for under ground water ! there is always water there available! usually these tress roots are very short and weak and with the slittiest wind blowing they fall down very easily !!
thats what grooming does to an animal!
animals need no vaccinations or other similar cares !
And for the nails trimming i bring another example. do you want to not use nail clipper for yourself for the rest of your life? thats what our stone age ancestor used to do . ok if so, you have to do what animals do, scratch anything available , in the future you can see that your nails don't grow large anymore ! instead the base of your nails become massier and stronger and ready for all kinds of hard challenges.
I never get sick because i always get away from doctors , the last time i got sick was 25 years ago because i have strong immune system and i always look at the nature more carefully and with virtual magnetic glass if i have and issue which needs attention .
and the last thing is that I never wash my feet and yet they are the cleanest and shiniest . anyone has any idea why ?!
because i have 50pairs of socks ! as soon as i take my feet off my shoes i take off my dirty socks and put on the clean onesI never wash my feet and yet they are the cleanest and shiniest . anyone has any idea why ?!
because i have 50pairs of socks ! as soon as i take my feet off my shoes i take off my dirty socks and put on the clean ones!
what I'm trying to tell you stupid people is that cats don't need to be taken to the bath room and be washed ! just prepare many bedsheets for their sleeping place and change them as soon as they get off and go for play or eat.
taking cats to the bathroom is a very horrible and scary experience for them ! they think you are going to kill them ! and this is very very horrible if you get my meaning ! i don't know if you have ever encountered with such kinds of feelings !? but i have ! and i know exactly what it feels like !
p.s. if possible make the bedsheets a little wet . because the wet sheets absorb the dirt better .!

bob revolutionist I don't clip my cats' nails and I just let them be themselves. They scratch me when they propel off of me. They're very happy cats but sometimes they get very excited and they go from laying on top of me to running after something they see out of my windows or sometimes they start playing aggressively with my ankles and feet (ouch). Good upholstery is seersucker. Good rugs are Safavieh shag. Cats should always have sharp nails just in case they need to defend themselves. Never take away their defenses. And give your cats lots of toys and things to scratch and play with them whenever they are in the mood.

These stupid people think they own everything !! The world is much better when they are sleeping!!

Thanks! And i agree with spay and neuter, since it prevents further cat bad and most of the time torturous quality lives .

+bob revolutionist thats the longest shit i've ever seen anyone write. Now I ,ofc read like only 5 lines or smth and i gotta say, i always trim my cat's claws, there is nothing wrong with that. If it's a house cat and doesn't go out to the street, it doesn't need its claws whatsoever. I had a cat claws of which i would trim every week or so, and we were all very happy, and she also scratched furniture a lot less. So basically all you said is just bullshit

im happy that you said something about declawing. glad im not the only one who rrealizes its diadvantages to the owners and the cats. some declawed cats wont even use the litterbox anymore! their paws are so tender it hurts to walk and the litter is too rough for them to use.thanks for the info-great video!

This is so true about the declawing business. When I took my last kitty for the first time to the vet, they insisted in the offer of declawing him. I refused several times, since I am vehemently opposed to this practice. It is also true that it is highly discouraged in other countries. I one took my cat to a vet in Argentina to have his nails trimmed and they understood that I wanted him declawed, They flat refused to do it until I explained that I wanted a trim.

LOVE this station! Kodi and Shorty are great and your comments are so much fun! And while I totally agree that declawing is terrible, I did see just one time when it was helpful. My sister had a horribly abused cat who was only nice to her and her immediate family. The rest of us were scared of that cat who would attack us. The declawing helped the cat calm down - that was extreme and normally not the way to go.

Very useful advice. How lucky are the 'owners' of these cats, and how lucky the cats.
