It was a great honor to be on its cover, or anywhere in it for that matter. That must be kept in mind when listening to this song to understand it
A great hit from a fun band! They eventually got their picture on the cover of the Rolling Stone and made the cover again when they brought their mother to RS offices to buy her five copies. Have a Telegraphic Tuesday!!!
A great giggle is that when this song became a huge national hit, Rolling Stone Magazine ran the group's photo right up front under the headline, "What's-their-name gets their picture on the cover." What a great goof! Did he still make five copies for his mother?
These guys were really good musicians. What's hysterical is the guitar solo, where it goes nowhere and lasts for about 3 seconds long with the lead singer summarizing it as " oh that's beautiful", lmao.
That was nothing. There was another alternate video of this song on UA-cam awhile ago, but I think it got taken down - think there’s a partial video up, but it’s not the whole thing. But it was maybe twice as long as this one, partly because the bassist was kinda tripping out and held notes for ridiculously long periods before going into another sprint
Dr Hook's first Top 40 hit was "Sylvia's Mother", which is completely different. It's a sad, sweet story of unrequited love. And it shows what kind of a range these guys had. However, I have to admit, my first exposure to them was on a PBS Special, hosted by Dick Cavett, called "VD Blues", in which they sang a song titled "Don't give a dose to the one you love most". Needless to say, I fell in love with them. As you go through their catalog, I would suggest some of their early work, like "Last Morning", "The Ballad of . . .", "Things I Didn't Say", "Carry me, Carrie", "Cooky & Lila", "The Millionaire", "Levitate", "Queen of the Silver Dollar", and, of course, "Sylvia's Mother". They have a number of other good songs as well, but not all he songs on the first 4 albums (Dr Hook, Sloppy Seconds, Belly Up, and Bankrupt) are, shall we say, UA-cam Friendly. I personally think "Freaker's Ball" is absolutely hilarious, but UA-cam might not think so. I suppose "I got stoned and I missed it" might slip by, and maybe "If I'd only Come and Gone", but I doubt they'd like "Penicillin Penny", and I know "Get my Rocks Off" would definitely trigger some people. But, hey, it's all just wacky fun by a bunch of 70s stoners. 😁
"I Got Stoned and I Missed It" is another cool one from their stoner hippy days. They cleaned up their look and became a top 40 staple for a number of years.
One of the best clips in the film “Almost Famous” was when the band, Stillwater, was told they were going to be on the next cover of Rolling Stone magazine and they all started singing “On the Cover of the Rolling Stone!! I’ve always loved this song cuz you know every rock band wants to make the cover at least once!

Nice reaction video! Glad you are showing Dr Hook some love. I've spent some time playing music with Ray Sawyer RIP and he was the most unpretentious and nicest musician I've known. Also he was one of the funniest people I've ever met.
Their shows were legendary & for many of us given their constant touring in the 70’s and early 80’s, they were the first concert we saw. I was 12 when my brother took me & have many friends who also saw Dr. Hook first. It really makes you appreciate the magic of a live concert & being there not watching it. They covered the March 29, 1973 issue of Rolling Stone. Another great hit is Sharing the Night Together.

My all-time favorite Dr Hook song is Only Sixteen, a beautiful song about young love. It reminds me of a similar themed song from The Sound of Music, Sixteen Going On Seventeen. A (fictionalized) WWII themed musical based on a real family. Edit: Be cautious diving down that Dr Hook rabbit hole. They have some songs that will scandalize you, but they’ll have you singing the lyrics later. 😆

Hi guys, I'm 63 yrs old and I have seen many, many concerts. From The Supremes, Billy Joel, Paul McCartney, Rod Stewart just to name a few. I have to say that they are all amazing, but Dr Hook and the Medicine Show was by far the most fun. Unpretentious and full of joy. Great memories. Dr hooks gotta be one of my favourite bands, especially watching videos of them playing live. They just seem to be always having fun and thoroughly enjoying themselves playing music and making people happy. One of my favourites that you might enjoy is called “the millionaire”
I saw them live in the early 80’s. It was pretty much like you’d expect, great music and total chaos. My eyes almost popped out of my head when they did Freakin’ at the Freaker’s Ball. They did make the cover, BTW!
I so love Dr Hook! The guy with the eye patch doesn’t sing lead on too many songs, but this is one. ❤ This song got them on the cover of the Rolling Stone magazine.
I was 9 years old when this song came out. I made my mom take me to the Venture’s record store so I could buy the .45 single of this song. I then proceeded to listen to it daily several times….probably driving Mom and Dad nuts!
Amber: Speaking of Shel Silverstein - you need to check out the book: "Where The Sidewalk Ends" - I know you like poetry - and, the poems in there: your girls are just about the right age to enjoy a LOT of them....some have much deeper meanings. My daughter, when she was a girl, enjoyed that book, together! He also wrote the book: "I'm Looking For My Missing Piece" - a CLASSIC in our house!! STILL love this song, after all these years!! SO MUCH FUN!!! GREAT reaction!! HUGS! ❤❤❤❤❤
They finally made the cover only it wasnt a photo but carnival type caricatures. Next to the drawing was not the name of the band but the words: "What's-Their-Names Make The Cover." It was such a clever retort from ROLLING STONE. Just classic.
Dr. Hook “Medley” (live) is also a good one as it showcases two other band mates as well as Dennis and Ray. They go through verses of a few 50’s songs 🎶
Thank you for finally getting to this one. Love it!! This is the version of Dr Hook that we all fell in love with. Your next reaction should be The Millionaire or Queen of the Silver Dollar.
Another fun song from them is "Everybody's making it big but me" and "Freakin' at the Freakers Ball" good luck getting past the sensors on the Freakers Ball one 😂
One of my favorite bands, you guys need to listen to some of their "innercuts" on their albums, The guitarist in the back with the glasses, Rik, is a friend and very good. The singer, Ray, really needed the eye patchm not a prop...he passed away a couple years ago.... you mentioned the "mountains of W. Virginia, he was from Mobile, Alabama....... try "Freakin' At The Freaker's Ball". "Bad-Eye Bill" or "Michaelangelo" for a chuckle or "Wonderful Soupstone" or "One More Year(Of Daddy's Little Girl)" for some emotions ( I guarentee even Rob will shed a tear or 100 over this one)
I got to see these guys back around the time this song came out. It was a free concert outside of the local mall. The opening act was Redbone (of Come And Get Your Love fame). It was a great show. I think another band you might also like to check out is Brownsville Station and their song Smoking In the Boys Room.
Having hippie parents. This was a favorite of mine and my sister. Imagine girls around the age of y'all's begging for this song to be played 😂 we would dance to it in the living room.
Great novelty song from them! They ended up getting their cover on the Rolling Stone Magazine a short time later. Looking for a great novelty song check out Troglodyte from the Jimmy Castor Bunch. For Dr. Hook checkout "A Little Bit More" or "Only Sixteen". Thanks. ☺
This is such an iconic song. Poison does a cover of this that is priceless (boys were well hydrated at the time) Also makes me think of Nickelback's song Rock Star. If you haven't done that one yet, the video is a who's who of the entertainment industry. ❤
Saw these guys in 1973 in Joplin Mo. Had just moved there from Iowa during my OJT at the airport. 1 of my 3 best friends made the trip down to see them with me (a hell of a long drive!) After 1 of the songs the lead singer tossed out his harmonica into the crowd, just out of my reach but into the hands of my friend. Never forget that concert. Shortly after that, they made the cover of Rolling Stone and the headline read "Whats their names make the cover." LOL
THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH for this reaction!!! 🥰 🥰 🥰 My favorite group reminding me my brother who passed, it was HIS group. He's the one who introduced me to them. "Carry me Carrie" is another great one of them! The lyrics are sad but it's so good! ❤❤❤
It's kinda fun that most people (me included) always thought that Ray (the one with the eye-patch) was the vocalist on all their songs! But it's Dennis (the long-haired, bearded one you see singing along in this video) who actually sang on most of their biggest hits!
If you want to see just how tight a band they were, check out "Carry me Carrie " live from Shell's houseboat. It's not a sound stage, it's a houseboat, and they are pretty clearly wasted. They have a lot of fun doing it and they sound great.
Carry me Carry, Queen Of The Silver Dollar, Sylvia's Mother every song they played on that boat was awesome. I always have to remind people there was NO autotune back then.
@@lisag1510 completely agree, combined with how much fun they clearly were having and how good they sounded it's a remarkable set of performances. Plus you get to see Shel chilling and playing harmonica, win, win, win.
Written by Shel Silverstein, prolific author, cartoonist, playwright, composer, musician. He also wrote “A Boy Named Sue” made famous by Johnny Cash.

I was 9 years old when this song came out. I made my mom take me to the Venture’s record store so I could buy the .45 single of this song. I then proceeded to listen to it daily several times….probably driving Mom and Dad nuts!
Funny thing is you’re going to have explain what a 45 is to these two.
They certainly had their own niche in the music of the times and had an amazing number of hits
Love Dr Hook. That was the first one I had heard and was hooked ever since. Real entertainers
That rooster strut Amber pointed out is a signature move of Mick Jagger which just adds to satire. 😝
HUGS! ❤❤❤❤❤
better hurry, I hear Shel is being banned
My favorite Shel - The Giving Tree
@@justwondering5651 Another good one!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
They finally made the cover only it wasnt a photo but carnival type caricatures. Next to the drawing was not the name of the band but the words: "What's-Their-Names Make The Cover." It was such a clever retort from ROLLING STONE. Just classic.
Aside from all their serious songs out there, this will always be my favorite!
"The Last Morning" and "Carry Me Carrie" are two of their best ballads.
“Lifes been good” by Joe Walsh ❤
Fun lyrics with lots of musical ear candy. I think you’ll enjoy it ❤
Everybody used to embroider on their jeans. So cool!
Dr. Hook “Medley” (live) is also a good one as it showcases two other band mates as well as Dennis and Ray. They go through verses of a few 50’s songs 🎶
They did get on the cover 50 years later!!!!
Yesssss finally!!! Such an underrated bop to get you feeling right!! 😁😁
Queen of the Silver Dollar by Dr Hook!!!
Thank you for finally getting to this one. Love it!! This is the version of Dr Hook that we all fell in love with. Your next reaction should be The Millionaire or Queen of the Silver Dollar.
It doesn't seem like queen of the silver dollar gets the attention it deserves.
There are 2 damaged souls, the Queen and the narrator/singer.
Don't you remember the guys singing this in "Almost Famous"? A great fun song from the day. And so OF the day.
Queen of the Silver Dollar is another song that always stuck with me!!
Having hippie parents. This was a favorite of mine and my sister. Imagine girls around the age of y'all's begging for this song to be played 😂 we would dance to it in the living room.
Very eclectic, versatile & fun group!
"The Millionaire"
"Sharing the Night Together"
"Walk Right In"
A classic!
Ray Steven’s ‘Everything Is Beautiful’ is another classic!
Thanks. ☺
Their jaws will drop when they hear Troglodyte.
When they made the cover the tagline was What’s Their Names Finally Made The Cover
Great song. My favorite by them is “Sharing The Night Together”.
"we got a dozen little blue-eyed groupies who will do anything we say." Loved Amber's eye rolls at that
This is such an iconic song. Poison does a cover of this that is priceless (boys were well hydrated at the time)
Also makes me think of Nickelback's song Rock Star.
And also, "All The Time I The World" ❤ Give it a listen! 😊
Mom says thanks, one of her absolute fave groups of all time. Loves Sylvia’s Mother the best though out of their songs.
It's kinda fun that most people (me included) always thought that Ray (the one with the eye-patch) was the vocalist on all their songs! But it's Dennis (the long-haired, bearded one you see singing along in this video) who actually sang on most of their biggest hits!
And they did make it on the cover of Rolling Stone and yes they did buy 5 copies for their mothers
I've always LOVED this song!
Alright my babies.... You just received your second Righteousness Award ‼️🏆💯🔥🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
Such a fun band…loved when this would come on the radio!
