    "how do you care for it? how do you propagate it?"
    It is a wild fern in Florida (it grows both semi-terrestrial, usually in mulch, or epiphytically, typically growing in the leaf axils on Sabal Palms) and it is a nuisance. They are constantly invading my orchid pots and mounts. I know, I know, my weeds are your jewels.

    Hi Geoff....loved the beginning of your video (and the rest of it too of course 😊) but wow... you have changed so much in 24 hours 😂.
    Your daughter is a star and I love the sense of humour there 🤣.
    A suggestion for you though.... I did a search for "orchid channels" on my mobile version of UA-cam but noticed yours didn't come up at all even though you have lots of orchid videos.
    When I searched "tropical plant" channels, your one came up but maybe you're missing out on quite a few people interested specifically in orchids as it's not being picked up in the search and will get you the million subscribers you deserve 😁.
    Perhaps the word orchid either in the title of your channel somewhere or in whatever bit UA-cam uses to generate searches would let more people find you?
    Just a thought and hope it helps 👍.

      Thanks Maxine - glad you enjoyed it. Ellie will be especially pleased! I know what you mean about 'orchids' - there are about a gazillion UA-camrs who focus on orchids so I guess I like to be a bit different. My long-gone dad used to 'baaaaaaa' at me if he thought I was following the crowd for the sake of following them...I keep bringing things back to orchids though - but not the next one I'm afraid! 😂

      @@maxineevans9179 I've read that the average UA-camr (if they do everything right) takes on average 2 years to reach 1K subs. I'm on track to do it in around 9 months so I'm reasonably happy with that. 😃

      Hi Anna. For once I have to say it's doing rather well - both the mature plant and the new division. It probably helps that it's hardly stopped raining here in the UK since I made that video so those hairy rhizomes are staying nicely hydrated.

    So... I'm from Miami, FL and live in Savannah, GA. I've never seen this fern before just under a year ago when I saw one at the local market and once it was gone, I'd never seen it again. Looking all over Google and in town, even asking in my planting groups and no one else has seen this before. I know you're not in the states, but do you know how I can find these to purchase or even purchase over seas and have it shipped to me in Georgia?

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  3 роки тому

      Hi Tegan. I've done a quick Google search in the UK, and Phlebodium Aureum Davana is readily available over here. Following Brexit, no-one is able to ship plants in or out of the country unfortunately. (It's still possible, but the costs of the necessary paperwork make it too much to bother with.) So unfortunately I'm unable to help you. Have you tried the fern-related Facebook groups?

    I just bought one of these curly ones today not knowing what it was I searched the internet until I found it. I will replant it in Spring but right now it looks like it is doing fine they have it in the soil but the Rhisims are on the top and I am sure there are some inside the pot. I read that watering it once per week is good but I also heard a guy say misting is good too every now and then. Do they really need mist? It is no problem if they do cos I have spray bottles but not rainwater I have city-treated water but I can filter out the chlorine and other chemicals. So I will use filtered water. What do you think? I don't think iodine is good for plants but it was in the water I noticed the other day. I am worried it won't get enough light so I bought a grow light. My living room is looking out NE from my Balcony. So I don't get a huge amount of light from the sun as it disappears around noontime. What are your Thoughts Jeff Please? At least I know what the name of the plant is. I love the blue-green mat finish on the leaves. I don't think it will flower if it did that would be a bonus.

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  7 місяців тому

      Thanks for your questions, Patrick. Phlebodium ferns are pretty tolerant of any media - but to optimise things it's worth remembering they're epiphytic, so grow in looser, moss-like material and leaf litter. They don't 'need' to be misted, but if your home is low in humidity, the hairy Rhizomes can take in moisture from the air via misting. This might prevent some drying out - but to be honest, they're tough as old boots and providing you're watering regularly they should be fine. Filtered water or rain-water is always a better option for the reasons you've stated. Regarding light, I've found they're very tolerant of all sorts of situations so your living room should be fine. If it starts to decline you could always add a cheap grow-light. It definitely won't flower though - all ferns are non-flowering as they pre-date flowering plants. Instead they reproduce with spores, which at some point you'll begin to see on the underside of some leaves. Good luck!

      Thank you very much I really appreciate your knowledge. I also bought a full spectrum grow light but I don't have it directly over the plant. This is for nighttime as we get dark pretty early here in Canada! Thanks again, Patrick. The actual name of mine I found was Blue star Davana it has the curly ruffles on the sides of the leaves really quite nice I think.@@Grow_Up_Man55

      @patrickrwhite8354 The Latin name for your plant is Phlebodium aureum ‘Davana’. It’s a cultivar from the Phlebodium species. Blue Star Fern is the general common name people give to all of these Phlebodium species and hybrids. Rabbit’s Foot Fern is another name for it due to the hairy rhizomes. Also Bear’s Paw Fern! I’ve only been to Canada once but we loved it. The best holiday we ever had. We did a tour of the Rockies and went to places like Banff, Whistler, Lake Louise, Vancouver etc. famous place. Weather was rubbish though - similar to home! 🤣

      Great name - mine's called Barbara! 😂 I've been doing a bit of reading on them and it's really interesting how ferns reproduce - very different to flowering plants. So they should all produce spores, but only some fronds are fertile. I feel another video coming on...
