  • Did your Blue Star Fern start looking lush and lovely and after a while start losing fronds? Did more and more fall out until there was virtually none left?
If that's happened to you then keep watching because I'm going to tell you why this has happened and then how you can avoid it to get your fern looking like this one!
I have kept Blue Star Ferns for many years and 99% of issues are due to Lack of water - the root ball is very dense and fibrous, it tends to dry out quickly in a pot and then if you don't water it correctly it just gets worse until it gives up and dies.
WHAT TO DO: Firstly you need to get your watering right, it needs to be in a pot that you can water from the top and from the bottom, so that you can sit it in a sink and give it plenty of water until it runs out the bottom, then let it sit in a tray of water so the root ball can draw it up from the bottom too and you can be sure it is watered all the way through the root ball,
Top Tip: use a moisture meter to check all the way through 30 minutes after you have watered, it will highlight if it's still dry halfway into the root ball.
The second thing you can think about is a repot and using some more moisture retentive soil, a fern mix if you can buy a pre-made mix or if you want to make your own use a loam type soil, maybe coir, and mini bark chippings. Something that will retain moisture but not keep it soaked.

Thank You! It's a little leggy at the moment becuase we have just come out of the low-light of winter and so it has been search for the light but I expect it will really progress well over this summer.

I found mine behind the kitchen curtains I never pull back. I forgot all about it. Very very dry and the pot fell off the roots. Gave it a good soak. Hope the change doesn't harm it.

They can come back quite well as long as it's not totally dead you should be ok.
