Natalie Story its like gelatin, they've been eating it for years, because its vegetarian the monks started it, its from seaweeds and I think I'm right in saying it has the advantage over gelatin of not only not being basically boiled down animal waste products but not melting, i believe its spost to maintain itself as jelly like to a much higher and lower temperature so more suited for use as jelly in very hot countries
Okay.. how rare it is and why i remembered finding one in my grandparents living room cabinet a few years ago. If my memory is still good, i found it half open and someone tried to seal it back with duct tapes (and it didnt work), the plastic is gone but i remember the content (specificlly the cereal) has gone black, or atleast a few of em has since i only open couple of the top one, didnt even bother to check the rest since it thought its all the same.
as far as I know agar agar is used as suspension culture for bacteria to grow into basically acts as food and home for bacteria we prepare it in lot of our tests after you add some luke warm water the powder becomes jelly like substance
Similar types of rations for lifeboats would be pre-packed in a collapsed inflatable life raft sealed in a weather-proof container. IOW, same type of packing this ration has but the entire lifeboat would be sealed at the factory. As long as the seal isn't broken on the raft, that type of packaging would be good for 3-5 years./
Clorine doesn't actually have a smell to it. The smell comes later after urine is mixed in from the many people swimming while peeing in the pool water.
Actually agar agar is an algae based gelatin, it is both natural and vegan. If the foil is made of aluminum the white powder is probably aluminum oxide. This is aluminum's version of rust and it is white in color.
Thank you for noticing, this is shot in 2.7k at 60fps, over exposed with 6.5k led lighting and darkened down in editing to keep clarity, glad you enjoyed it does take a long time to upload but I feel its worth it, and as you know tis is done with a GoPro hero 5
the packaging is probably alumanized mylar or something similar. The white powder in that case may be aluminum oxide from the coating corroding and breaking down
I have a great idea for a non-spoil MRE on a lifeboat. It consists of a cleaver, a boning knife and a bunch of straws, one of which is shorter than the rest.
Wow, I've seen a lot of ration videos but never one where someone compared the taste of one to house paint! It makes you seriously wonder what chemicals they put in it.
i have to be honest with ya. steve1989 is like one of my most favorite MRE review guys out there. i think hes freakin awesome. and will try just about anything i watched him try some beef MRE once that was pre world war I. the fact that you tried this even though it could have got you sick, and that you do a lot of awesome stuff.plus the fact you are just as awesome...... my respect for you has now become equal to steve. so great job buddy keep up the good work and i hope someday you are able to read this comment. cause i am a year late on this video. but Ehhh...... either way great job man.
Did you feel even a little strange after eating those bits? Most expired thing I've ever had was bread that was months past. Had a horrible after taste that I suspect was the preservative chems going wrong inside.
Agar is basically like(is?) a gelatin. It's often used in labs as the base for petri dishes but also used in food production. BTW what are you filming on top of, the surface looks beautiful. The knife is making me nervous.
April 16, 2018---Thanks for an interesting video, but makes me wonder what todays lifeboat rations are like or do they even carry them any more? And would some sort of water filter like a Life Straw be part of it or would that be a separate item on the life raft?
Lol we used to use agar agar at school in chemistry and biology lessons its that jelly like stuff you put on the bottom of a petrie dish to grow moulds and fungus on 😂
Cool nice to see a rare one like this. The packaging of the cereal bars at least look like it is in much better condition than the jelly bars. That jelly bar does not look appetizing at all. LOL send a couple of those to Steve1989. He seems to be the Mikey of MREs, Give it to Steve he will eat it he eats everything lol. Cereal bars yum rancid fats and rancid vitamins. Great review thanks.
Susan Olson, no he is a true American hero because he has served our country and fought for our freedoms. He just so happens to eat rancid food. He also catalogs and documents these old rations that there are no written records of contents.
Kahlest Enoch, I am not trying to belittle your hero, it just irritates me when someone leaves a comment on this channel talking about how great Steve is. Every time Nathan doesn't eat some wretched piece of garbage, there is a comment about how Steve would have munched it right down. I am tired of reading that comment and I bet Nathan is too.
Agar-Agar is a plant-based gelatin substitute. Most commonly used in asian countries up until recently but it is gaining popularity in the states a bit now.
Hey Nate; Reckon if they'd included a dozen fishin hooks & 50' of 50# test monofiliment line, it would go good for makin' flashy lures from the foil packaging. The dense ingredients look bland enough to get away with wettin' your whistle with a few teaspoons of sea water, without too much harm. Instuctions for utilizin' the clear plastic bag for a solar still, & using it, & the plastic lidded container for storing rain water, would have been a wise move as well. Enough leftover foil fashioned into a solar style cooking bag/oven, might insure killing the parasites found within most fish that were caught. -former recondo sgt. ''rock'' 82nd abn. Some sites ship here, some don'. It is a hit and miss search. Shipping is sometimes killer, sometimes not I am trying to start to do MRE review whenever I open one for dinner. So far the Kazak is the best. I wish they still made C Rats, I liked them when I got them, in the early 70s.
Because he doesn't say that we will be "getting this out on to a tray , nice" I am unimpressed.. but I'll give this a chance.. but if pusses out and doesn't eat something it's not gonna fly..
I will comment it using Google translation. This emergency food is still being produced and is still mounted on the ship of the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force. The general person can also purchase, you can buy it on Amazon as MR5. Please try once.
its survival food, what matters shelf life calorie count nutrients quality how good it is on low water diet taste and smelll is on the botom of the list

Hahaha, for sure.
DO IT
Koltin Nilam yes steve Is a superhero :V !!!

Koltin Nilam he eats everything 😂
Anybody else like to eat while they watch these videos, particularly comfort food?
Expected it to contain a short sword for harakiri, for the shame of failure by having your boat sunk.
The Morning Star you made my day
Harakiri also known as "sepukku".
what's funny is this is 1979 and the japanese to english translation is decent. It's 2018 and the chinese still don't have it figured out.
The music at the beginning is Chinese, not Japanese.
No hiss! We're doomed!
Agar agar is a jelly substance derived from algae. Used in food, science (think Petrie dishes) and pharmaceuticals.
Natalie Story
Chocolate agar, yum...
agar agar is carrageen
At school we used it to raise microbiological creatures like bacteria, it's a good medium to grow them on.
Natalie Story
YOU are exactly correct, you get a 🍪 cookie
Japanese lifeboat ration, Japanese style opening music, images of British RNLI lifeboats. Love it! :D
Gotta love google images
I think the music sounds more like Chinese though 😂
music was most definitely chinese :D

Some lovely pics of British lifeboats there
That is what google gave me for (Japanese life boats) dont know why there was so little info on anything Japanese involving lifeboats on google
damn dude you cant blame google on fucking up do your research .

This is my very first video I run into your UA-cam channel. Excellent video my friend!
The White powder is aluminum oxide. Yeah package was obviously open to the elements as you mentioned in the beginning.
It would be neat if you tried new, non-expired ones, I wonder what they'd be like.
gotta love an ad a minute into the video
Be sure to watch it I need that .000001 cent to buy rations with
Clorine doesn't actually have a smell to it.
I remember my mom talking about Japanese postcards having powder residue on it.
That white powder as you call it is probably crystalised salt as it's been in contact with sea water.
Maybe the white powder was cornstarch or something to keep the bar from sticking?
Agar-Agar is an animal based gelatin used for petri dish cultures mainly.
Awesome ration one I have never seen before.
After watching Steve there is no other.
Agar-agar is like the jelly you get from seaweed, and used in tons of stuff actually
You have amazing frame rate. Felt surreal watching this.
Thank you for noticing, this is shot in 2.7k at 60fps, over exposed with 6.5k led lighting and darkened down in editing to keep clarity, glad you enjoyed it does take a long time to upload but I feel its worth it, and as you know tis is done with a GoPro hero 5

The table cover looks good, what is it? Looks like tooled leather but probably vinyl.
I have a great idea for a non-spoil MRE on a lifeboat. It consists of a cleaver, a boning knife and a bunch of straws, one of which is shorter than the rest.
All those Ocean Liners the Indians break up on the shore must have quite a few interesting rations on the lifeboats.
Wow, I've seen a lot of ration videos but never one where someone compared the taste of one to house paint! It makes you seriously wonder what chemicals they put in it.
was I the only one that thought this was going to be a portable life raft that fits in your pocket?...
Agar agar is gelatin made from plants instead of animal.
Basically, vegan gelatin. I assume they used it because it'd keep better.
i have to be honest with ya. steve1989 is like one of my most favorite MRE review guys out there. i think hes freakin awesome. and will try just about anything i watched him try some beef MRE once that was pre world war I. the fact that you tried this even though it could have got you sick, and that you do a lot of awesome stuff.plus the fact you are just as awesome...... my respect for you has now become equal to steve. so great job buddy keep up the good work and i hope someday you are able to read this comment. cause i am a year late on this video. but Ehhh...... either way great job man.
Thank you for watching David
Very cool brother!!!
Salmonella sandwich! Thumbs up for taste test & description...👍
agar-agar is seaweed based gelatin.....japanese eat agar jelly products flavored with various flavors like red sweet bean called yokan
Chinese music, British RNLI boats and Japanese rations. I guess one out of three 'aint bad
Agar Agar is a plant use as a thickener in many Asian deserts
I got 123456789 cookies in my ration pack, in my ration pack, in my ration pack.....
Ok .. eating in a lifeboat .. without fresh water .. what a bright idéa of them.
You have some unique Rations that I have yet to see on other channels, you get a Sub.
"smells like it will kill me if i eat it" takes a bite any way
Did you feel even a little strange after eating those bits? Most expired thing I've ever had was bread that was months past. Had a horrible after taste that I suspect was the preservative chems going wrong inside.
If I recall, agar agar is a gelatin type substance, fyi.
Agar is basically like(is?) a gelatin. It's often used in labs as the base for petri dishes but also used in food production. BTW what are you filming on top of, the surface looks beautiful. The knife is making me nervous.
Why is a cutting tool making you nervous?
Agar - Agar is a ingredient that works similar like gelatine. :)
Might be nice to put the BGM in description.
Nice review btw. That container can be reused though
April 16, 2018---Thanks for an interesting video, but makes me wonder what todays lifeboat rations are like or do they even carry them any more? And would some sort of water filter like a Life Straw be part of it or would that be a separate item on the life raft?
Lifeboat rations are basically like a dense cake or shortbread.
Lol we used to use agar agar at school in chemistry and biology lessons its that jelly like stuff you put on the bottom of a petrie dish to grow moulds and fungus on 😂
You've been finding some really good stuff lately keep it up
It's Called A.M.O.R What does the acronym mean? If I may ask?
Ms.DeViL 2U The AMOR thing in my name?
It's Called A.M.O.R Yeah, is it not an acronym?
Give it to Steve1989 he’ll put them on biscuits and say it’s great 😂
Steve cuts the foil...... "Nice hiss!" 😄
I swear I heard the opening music in Wizard101 back in the day
Agar-agar is used to make vegetarian/vegan jelly instead of gelatin from animal bones.
You shooting in 120fps?
Looks smoother than 60fps
Agar agar is the vegarian version of gelention so it must be a gummy treat.
Agar agar is a jelly derived from seaweed.
Cool nice to see a rare one like this. The packaging of the cereal bars at least look like it is in much better condition than the jelly bars. That jelly bar does not look appetizing at all. Steve is a true American hero!
Yes he is
Joshua, he's a true American hero because he eats rancid food?
Susan Olson, no he is a true American hero because he has served our country and fought for our freedoms. He just so happens to eat rancid food. He also catalogs and documents these old rations that there are no written records of contents.

That was an awesome ration. We really enjoyed the lifeboat ration., Great review Nathan.
Glad to hear that thanks for watching
Haha I watch all your bmw videos and I stumbled onto this , I'm like this sounds like Nathan from Nathan's diy garage and what do you know haha.
I live a double life if you didn't know lol
I thought a Japanese ration would be a fishing kit and sets of chop sticks and a fillet knife. They are set with raw seafood and seaweed.
Agar is clear gelatin made from seaweed
agar-agar is just a vegan gelatin made from seaweed or algae or whatever I forget.
my name is also nathan and i also love mres
Very cool ration! Agree it would have been good a lot more fresher... But now just seems nasty! LOL
Keep up these awesome rare reviews mate 🙂
Agar Agar is a fruit and a good gelatin substitute
Agar-Agar is jelly :)
Maybe this came from a "demo" boat used for training in a chlorine pool ?
WHAT!? No coffee!? 😁😅😂😅😁

You would at least need some spider wire not mono filament, it would stay good alot longer lol
Sooo Agar - Agar it means Jelly. Actualy its indonesian word. Used by japanese.
You should do a review on seven oceans
2:40 i didn't know that comic sans was that old.
well it looked like it to me
I think I heard that Japanese theme from Monster Hunter 3?
eso se come con agua caliente se disuelve y queda como sopa,es parecido al kurry y arroz compactado
84 people abandoned ship in a Japanese lifeboat.
Best ration , a bottle of Sake' & Rice Candy . LOL
Nice Container at least, can be a baler to get water out of the boat.
So it’s like eating a large moth covered in that creepy dust and that dust coating the inside of your mouth and teeth?
Your Amazon affiliate won't ship to Thailand.
It may not, for some reason amazon does not like international shipping, hopefully they change that soon
