Steve, I have been following your videos for months. 3 years ago I was diagnosed with throat cancer. Long story short (for now). I finished up 7 harsh weeks of Chemo and Radiation on October 14th. I actually haven’t had solid foods since my 53rd birthday in May and probably want for at least another 6 months. It will depend on my tongue and throats ability to swallow. Right now, everything in my throat is fried from the 35 treatments. But as crazy as it sounds I have found some incredible joy in your videos. I have watched them all some multiple times. At the moment my tastebuds are not working, so I could not taste food if I wanted to. But you my friend give the absolute best description of meals, spices, smells. Love watching this kind of stuff. Signal mirror is surprisingly easy to use, just think how easy it is to use your watch face to direct sunlight when it hits it. Always fun to blind your friends like that, same method just a bigger reflective surface. Shine the light on your hand while held in front of you and point your hand at search aircraft. Viola!
The orange capped light is for regular night vision, so you can see at night - the red light is hard for the bad guys to see at a distance, but lets you see and your eyes can adjust to the darkness after you turn if off pretty fast - the light that did not seem to work, was the IR light and can only be seen with NVG’s
Your sound and graphics editing for your cup and drink stirring sounds with your spoon clinking are literally perfect. One of my favorite parts of your vids, other than the fact that it’s a new vid!
The H bandage is built to absorb up to a pint of blood so you’re not track by your blood trail if you’re shot. It can at least get you a good half a mile depending on how bad the wound is, before you start dripping again, but most ppl pass out about a pint and a half into bleeding and that’s when you know they don’t have much time left to get to a MASH. You’re body stops after two pints of blood.
That “standard light” you thought was broken was actually a top secret energy weapon. You unknowingly killed the neighbor’s cat and three birds flying by.
We had a hurricane in FL around that time last year - all that was left in the stores was Fiji. So when I stocked up on water, there was a surplus of Fiji in the house.
@@Steve1989MRE Artesian electrolytes. Also, it's pronounced more like Kay-oh-lynn vs cow-lynn. It's basically twice baked kitty litter, being Kaolin clay. Same stuff gets superheated and spun like cotton candy into Kaowool refractory insulation for furnaces. Fun stuff. Basically just a metric ton of surface area for platelets and coagulation factors to bind, and virtually nobody is allergic to it, as opposed to some of the other rapid coagulant materials that are based on chitin, most often derived from shellfish.
The lil "do-all nubbin" on the Leatherman Squirt is a phillips screwdriver. Works pretty well in a pinch. I used mine earlier today when I was swapping bits and pieces in an old computer :)
I loved these. I was USAF Para Rescue for 15 years. You are correct like Christmas. You know who really love them, 9 year old grandsons wanting to be USAF one day. It is the ultimate Christmas present for a kid.
The best thing to do with the flint wheel, which you can also do with any flint style lighter, is to rotate the wheel slowly on an angle. Enough to grind the flint to powder but not fast enough to cause it to ignite. Keep the wheel turning till you've got a little pile of flint dust and then, holding the flint wheel close, strike it properly so it sparks. The sparks will hit the flint dust pile and cause it to flash creating good localised heat for lighting tinder. :)
Red light is not infrared. Is to be used during night operations to read maps and etc. that way the enemy is not as likely to see your position as a normal flash light would give your position away immediately because of how bright it is. The other light that doesn’t work however is a infrared light that can only be seen through NVGs or any other kind of night vision device. If you turn all the lights off and you turn the light on and hold it up to your eye you will be able to make out the infrared light but just barely.
Also a note, the infared Cylalume Chemlight would likewise not be visible to the human eye or that camera he's using that has a hot filter to block infrared range light.
Steve1989MREInfo anytime man I come from a long line of military men sadly couldnt join due to a crohnic illness but I'm still very interested in all things armed forces and your videos just have that wholesome, genuine, love for your hobby and educating people. There have been times I've come across rations with others wondering how old they are and needless to say they were impressed with that bit of random info! Keep doing what you do brother, may your rations cans hiss, and your trays be full.
The 1960s pilot survival kit you reviewed had more versatile medical contents to meet pilots needs, with the exception of modern stuff like the combat gauze
Great pack. Though, we humans can't see Infrared light with the naked eye. We can sense it, just not see it. That light was literally just red. And it's red, because it's intended for night purposes. The human eyes can see most at night with a red light, due to the longer wavelengths of the light, whilst it remaining much less bright and less noticeable because of it. Whilst we see more differences in colour from greens to blues, which eventually form all colours into white light. The brightest, and most noticeable. With that said; if the red light is particularly powerful, you can see it for miles, as the human eyes are also most sensitive to red colours. So that little torch wasn't nearly powerful enough for, let's say, a search party 100metres away to notice, but a flare would be up to five miles or more. hence why emergency flares are red. Ontop of that; red lights like those effect our natural night vision the least. So you can use them without having to readjust your eyes again. And, of course, there's the added advantage of red lights needing much less charge to operate.
Yes, my thoughts exactly. The camera couldn't pick up the glow stick's infrared because of the IR blocking filter that cameras come with. I've seen some people remove those to make a very rudimentary infrared camera, but I've also seen a surprising number of people think that infra red is just, well... red 🤦♂️.
Came here late to this video but glad someone squared you away WRT the proper terminology, function and use of those IR VS Visible Red finger lights. If you send me the "Non-functional" one I can check it out and let you know if it is still viable then ship it back to you. Lemme know if you want to proceed. It's always good to see folks who never served in the Military take an interest in what those of us who have served or are still serving are supplied with to do our jobs. Keep up the good work, Sir.
I was confused by the black-and-white face reflecting in the small "cap mirror" at 6:40 for a couple seconds, and thought you had snuck something in there; but then saw your T-shirt was the source LOL
I'd really like to see a 4 inch section of a chainsaw file, added to kits like these. Maybe take a page out of those laser cut metal survival cards as well. A couple of fish hooks, a spear point and or frog gig, I've seen them with handcuff keys as well. Also, the lack of cordage upsets me.
The sticky camo wrap, its called coflex, we actually wrap our horse legs with it and use it as a medical wrap. You can get it pretty cheap in any color at your local farm store, tractor supply, and it says its for horses but its awesome to use on kids when they have a sprain or what not. I always have a box of different colors on hand because it will hold wires together behind your tv and entertainment system or wrap a bat handle with and then use the sports tape and makes it softer. Whats really nice is the coflex is stretchy and sticks to itself, no extra tape or pins needed on the go!
Well, it's better than what we had in the 80's. This looks what MAC pilots and their aircrews get. Combat pilots get the vest. Do to budget costs, everybody else gets nothing. Ground crew and security forces get jack shit. We had to supply our own survival gear. I got a first- aid pouch and empty plastic container with a note of what items that I should carry in .
Diebulfrog79 all aircrew get a survival vest with these two kits in them. Fighter pilots wear the vest while they fly by heavy aircraft pilots have their vest in a container on the aircraft.
Back in the late 70's and early 80's. We bitch so much, that the joint forces put out a report in Nov 1979 about the state of survival gear in the army, the navy, and the air force. (See Google) It was a total mess, There would be outdated kits going back to the Korea War, or no kits, many had notes kits will be coming that was dated 1969. No quality control, some kits were rotten by heat, aged, or moisture, worse kits that had vermin in it. Sometime during budget cuts, you got a "survival manual" that came out of your pay, a nylon first - aid pouch with an empty plastic container with a note of items that you can find at the base PX. Only pilots and their aircrew got training and gear. After 1982, things got better. No more damned notes.
I'm amazed there was no needle and thread in the med kit for closing any major gash wounds. And equally suprized there was no pain reducing medication even as simple as paracetamol advil etc.
Hi , in a pinch he has 4 daiper pins , and alcohol swipes , it's a speed stitch , also of note , after a solid smack adrenaline covers the pain quite well about a minute and a half . Two bandanas to apply pressure .
That is really cool that the Leatherman Squirt PS4 is included. I have a few of them. They're great tools. It's one of those "don't leave home without it" sort of things. It's so handy, one resides in my tool pouch at work.
Freezing the signal light MAY bring a small bit of life to the thing. It has worked for chemlights in the past in my experience. Love your content Steve, thank you so much for sharing
15:49 From the look and your description, that's basically an ACE bandage. Good for wrapping sprains, possible use as a sling if you have enough length, and you could use it to keep gauze in place (the use you suggested).
Given how much technology has changed since Vietnam, it makes sense these kits would be tailored for ensuring a speedy search and rescue, but the lack of pharmaceuticals especially compared to the '67 kit is really surprising. I'd have expected at least a 24-hour supply of non-thinning OTC painkillers, anti-diarrheals, and energy gel...unless I'm missing something, and there's a mission-specific survival kit to be paired with this.
Tnx (again) for opening these … i watched this in a jumbled order (Vietnam, WOII, This), and i must say that there are clearly some changes made in regards to both the gear in these types of kit, and the amount of it. F/e the sunburn thing, it's almost a laughable amount if you were to actually need it, unless you just need to SERE for a day. Same with the bug repellant tbh… Again, really appreciate you opening these types of items and filming them.
the Chem Light is to be used at night and it is a IR Chem light that can only be seen with night vison gear like the little IR led light not the little red light
Steve, I love your videos. I am a USAF enlisted aviator and I found your videos when I was in initial qual training a few years ago. I was shooting the shit with our aircrew flight equipment guys and they asked if I wanted to pick through their old/soon to be expired gear. Picked up one of the medical kits in addition to some other goodies. Excellent to keep in a bug out bag considering I am familiar with the contents inside. Keep up the great videos
When using the wetfire cut them in half. When you do that it makes them easier to light with a fire striker. You can also get them from Wal-Mart in the camping section.
The camo “bandage” is called “Koban” it was originally developed to wrap the forelocks on race horses. It is MANDATORY in an IFAK. I recommend all Steve’s peeps go check out the WW2 pilot survival kit and aside from the Quickclot, HH gauze and Koban, the gear they outfitted our grandpas with was superior. Also, no tourniquet and no chest seal? For a “modern” kit I’m not too impressed. Any competent Prepper could outdo that kit with under $100 at Walmart and Home Depot. ❤️you vids, Steve. “Nice”
The most important part of a survival kit is the training you got before you set out. The tinder tab package clearly says "Scrape tinder shavings into pile to light." The Sparklite probably would have worked if you had.
RA; More the reality that most pilots/aircrew are not in long term survival situations. Generally unlikely to spend more than a couple days before being rescued, captured or dead from injuries. In the USN, experience shows that if a pilot isn't found in the first 24 hours, they are dead. Consequently, in my flying career, our survvival kits were quite sparse, not even this much stuff.
You said the multitool could use a saw- as someone who spent years carrying a very similar multitool that did have a saw, I can tell you a saw on something that small is basically useless. You can get something done with a saw that's three or four inches if you're really in a bind, but a much more versatile option would be some sort of wire saw
The chem light probably needs snapped. I could be wrong on that particular one. But, chem lights need snapped to break the module inside to mix with the rest to create the illumination reaction.
When it's IR, it looks bright as regular white light under NVGs. Naked eyes and regular optics like cameras can't see it, but anyone with NVGs can, even peer enemy forces. I like using them during night flights under goggles. IR chemlights are great for marking positions.
I didn't check if anybody already ststed, but i guess the black "not working" LED-light is actually a IR-Light for use with NVG. Great review also, really enjoy it everytime!

Viola!

The lil "do-all nubbin" on the Leatherman Squirt is a phillips screwdriver. Works pretty well in a pinch. I used mine earlier today when I was swapping bits and pieces in an old computer :)
I love that Leatherman Squirt - I see it being the most used thing out of that kit for me.
"Kinda smells like artificial fish bait..." Steve can really give a life to his descriptions.

Some older style cameras, like a Sony with Nightshot can see infrared light easily. So can surveillance night cams.
Also a note, the infared Cylalume Chemlight would likewise not be visible to the human eye or that camera he's using that has a hot filter to block infrared range light.

The 1960s pilot survival kit you reviewed had more versatile medical contents to meet pilots needs, with the exception of modern stuff like the combat gauze
I was thinking the same thing while watching, this is garbage compared to the vietnam era one
I thought human eyes are most sensitive to green colors.
Yes, my thoughts exactly. The camera couldn't pick up the glow stick's infrared because of the IR blocking filter that cameras come with. I've seen some people remove those to make a very rudimentary infrared camera, but I've also seen a surprising number of people think that infra red is just, well... red 🤦♂️.
@@dougalachi red is the colour of blood and meat. We recognise it better for such reasons.
Came here late to this video but glad someone squared you away WRT the proper terminology, function and use of those IR VS Visible Red finger lights. If you send me the "Non-functional" one I can check it out and let you know if it is still viable then ship it back to you.

Because of Steve, I appreciate the hiss of opening new containers and packs, and always acknowledge the "nice hiss."
On the flip side, I get a little concerned when theres no hiss...
Maybe you joined The A-Team instead of the US Air Force.... ;)
Christian chavez you are correct. I'm Air Force AFE. We inspect and repair this stuff at least a couple times a week.
Adam Pringle same here brother AFE out in the west coast. Mostly on the parachute rigger side but I've worked on vest for a long time.
Quikclot and an Israeli bandage has saved more lives than seatbelts. Nice video brother.
Both amazing modern first aid inventions. Always good to have in your kit . Thanks for watching man
I'm amazed there was no needle and thread in the med kit for closing any major gash wounds.
In the old days a lot of these kits had morphine syrettes in there...

"Kind of smells like artificial fish bait. Not bad."
The cylume stick is for night vision goggles only. Wish you used a pair of NVGs then you'd see
The old kit and the new one here make an awesome set of videos. I hope you didn't go broke getting this one to show us!
15:49 From the look and your description, that's basically an ACE bandage. Good for wrapping sprains, possible use as a sling if you have enough length, and you could use it to keep gauze in place (the use you suggested).
As a man in the military, I always carry a multi tool with me. It comes in use all the time.
In the full kit, at least with the Army, a smal PRC radio was included as well. It has a range of like 5 miles I think depending on terrain.
in the Navy we carried prc-90
Given how much technology has changed since Vietnam, it makes sense these kits would be tailored for ensuring a speedy search and rescue, but the lack of pharmaceuticals especially compared to the '67 kit is really surprising. I'd have expected at least a 24-hour supply of non-thinning OTC painkillers, anti-diarrheals, and energy gel...unless I'm missing something, and there's a mission-specific survival kit to be paired with this.
The guy that made this MRE watched inspector gadget the night b4. I like
Cue the Inspector Gadget theme song
Tnx (again) for opening these … i watched this in a jumbled order (Vietnam, WOII, This), and i must say that there are clearly some changes made in regards to both the gear in these types of kit, and the amount of it. F/e the sunburn thing, it's almost a laughable amount if you were to actually need it, unless you just need to SERE for a day. Same with the bug repellant tbh… Again, really appreciate you opening these types of items and filming them.
The stirs and taps of the spoon make my day everytime

the Chem Light is to be used at night and it is a IR Chem light that can only be seen with night vison gear like the little IR led light not the little red light
The Chem Light is in the IR Spectrum so invisible to enemy ground troops but visible to SAR using NVGs. The "broker" finger light is also IR
"Oh yeah, that's lit!"
Why yes, Steve, yes, all your videos are "lit."
It's crazy how much more thorough the med pack for the Vietnam era one you opened was. Way more useful stuff in it than this one.

“Nice”
Only fools carry IFAKs.
Proper soldiers carry AFAKs, that way they carry enough opiates
to euthanize their fellow soldiers...
The most important part of a survival kit is the training you got before you set out.
The tinder tab package clearly says "Scrape tinder shavings into pile to light." The Sparklite probably would have worked if you had.
Seems like the Vietnam era one was more comprehensively equipped, particularly in the medical module. Must be budget cuts I suppose.
Hey Jared - I snapped it but didn't realize it's one of those chem light that can only be seen with night vision.
Steve your videos are so chill and relaxing plus I learn alot really enjoy the content so keep it up
When it's IR, it looks bright as regular white light under NVGs. Naked eyes and regular optics like cameras can't see it, but anyone with NVGs can, even peer enemy forces. I like using them during night flights under goggles. IR chemlights are great for marking positions.
I'm gonna save this video for tomorrow, I'm sure it will age well.
The handcuff key is magnetic. Watch when he puts it next to the compass.
Quentin Lavergne it’s the compass that’s magnetic. Not the key. Compasses use the earths magnetic field to find north
Hey Steve. We never see you outside. Maybe you can do an episode outside. Why.. I don't know.. Maybe try out the survival kit then

I didn't check if anybody already ststed, but i guess the black "not working" LED-light is actually a IR-Light for use with NVG.
Great review also, really enjoy it everytime!
I forgot: the human eye is not able to see Infrared(IR). So the red one is just red for low detection purpose
