    To think, Molby, with that amount of weight and lack of mobility, the Dane would struggle to get in a division one side today - how football has changed

    Remember this game like it happened last night. I guess games watched at a certain age (16 in this case) just stay with you. At school next morning a fellow John Barnes obsessive said "He's f**kin back!". And for a little while it really did feel like he was, but those injuries had taken their toll and this was probably the last time we saw him play like "John Barnes".

    I really liked this Liverpool team, they played such good football, at times. A great combination of experienced pros with younger talent. Shame they didn't finish higher up in the league table that season. Injuries did take it's toll at the worst times. Wasn't Souness' training methods questioned, leading to the amount of injuries?.. oh why on earth did Souness allow Steve McMahon to leave halfway through this season? 😂

    I was 13 years old when I was watching this…This was of course our first season back in Europe after six years after the ban from European club football…But of course…The signs were there…We were no longer the force we were…At it would be another nine years before we would get our hands on another European trophy

    Always remember watching this when I was a kid. I was only 8 and Liverpool had a mountain to climb. The team was awful and Genoa were too good for us. Didn’t have a chance against anyone decent in Europe around that time.

      I'm not saying we deserved to win over the 2 games - Genoa looked a decent team - but the second half performance in the second leg, with the Kop in full voice, was a rare highlight of that season for me.

      @@DaveWallerLFC that season Liverpool weren’t Liverpool. They were like imposters some of that team. How they even played for the club was bizarre. That Genoa tie just showed how far behind English clubs had fallen behind with no European football. It’s why Rangers were so good around then, having took the best players from England. Liverpool suffered from poor buys and Souness not being able to manage the team well.

    • @DaveWallerLFC
      @DaveWallerLFC  2 роки тому +3

      There were a lot of injuries that season as well. If Barnes and Whelan had been fit all season, I think things would have been better, despite Souness's many failings.

    Got free tickets off the club around this time because my family had dealings with a sales rep. Was sat in the old Paddock with a man who used to sell The Echo in Bold Street! Am sure this was the game the Genoa fans brought a drum that somehow ended up in the Kop! Think we played Spartak Moscow that season, was Mike Marsh sent off in one of those games?

    • @DaveWallerLFC

    Liverpool unlucky but the game was there for the taking if they had scored first. Barnes a shadow of a player he was only a year earlier. Liverpool had changed at this point and were no longer the force they once were.

      @@DaveWallerLFC molby showed more skill. Nicol and Rush also past there best. Important players lost through jnjury and sold. Daglish gone and the end of shanklys Liverpool. • @DaveWallerLFC
      @DaveWallerLFC  2 роки тому +1

      Molby and Barnes both great in my opinion. But you're right that things were slipping by this time and it took a long time to recover by which time we'd been overtaken by the mancs.

    • @eamonstafford2056
      @eamonstafford2056 2 роки тому +1

      @@stephen-truthseeker I agree with you here. I always thought that Steve Nicol should've been in the midfield more. He played in 7 different positions for LFC which to my mind mad him 'jack of all trades, master of none' Kevin Keegan said he had tremendous respect for Steve Nicol and although he was not blessed with more talent than he had, he played within that talent' Meaning that he was a good steady player. It was a shame to see Souness have to play 3 FB in defence and an inexperienced CB came on when Mark Wright went off. I would've looked at getting Paul McGrath to the club when he left Man Utd. If Liver pool could've stopped him getting on the Booze and sliding on his bottom for tackles like Graham Taylor did at Aston Villa then we could've solved a few problems at the back for a while. Plus it would've helped Nicky Tanner develop too. Just my thoughts

    • @DaveWallerLFC
      @DaveWallerLFC  2 роки тому

      What makes you say Nicol was not a master of all trades, or do you not think it's possible for a player to excel in more than one position? Do you rate Mark Lawrenson and Emlyn Hughes, or were they "masters of none" as well? I'm not sure why you're trying to talk down Nicol's ability here and on another video on this channel. He was a great player.
