What a great game to show anyone what a match was like in 1987!
Some proper tackles flying about - but that was the norm - so everyone got on with it.
Peter Beardsley's goal was a beauty, especially with the build up play from Barnes' back heel.
The coverage was good - especially having the players coming out their changing rooms and in/out of the tunnel.
And how about Jimmy Hill in his brown leather jacket.
Interesting to hear the post match chat - as true then as now...... not much changes.
Thanks for uploading! Fantastic to reminisce and soak up the nostalgia!

I don't think all games in 1987 had this level of intensity, on or off the pitch.

Memories Memories and Memories .Mate I was at this game one and only game. I live in Melbourne Australia and at that time I was playing for Sth Melbourne Hellas as a 16 year old .I was invited by Both York City and Forrest for Trials .One of the players at York was great Mates with McMahon and I was invited myself and my late Father to this game and wow what an atmosphere nothing like I ever experienced in Australia with AFL football especially.I met my idol Aussie Craig Johnston I remember he telling me his struggles in England and how they told him he wasn't good enough exc .
John Barnes was at another level how blood good was he just wow...

I remember watching this game as a 13 year old, great memories.
Something I have noticed though and from other videos I’ve watched again…. Grobbelaar did seem to have too much to say for himself, and comes across as confrontational…. Then with what came out later, I wonder if he should have been replaced a lot lot sooner 🤷‍♂️

He's Fat! He's Shit! He's never F........ Fit! Peter Reid! Halcyon Days of the Derby when Reidy dropped his shorts taking a corner at the kop end! Great memories when the game was far more rugged and not ruined by practiced, cheating diving all questioning referees for every throw. Some coaching is pathetic? It is ruining lots of games. Image Reid McMahon in current game? Roy Keane? Etc.....

My favourite Beardsley goal. I had a season ticket in the Kemlyn this season, had a great view of that shot. But Jimmy Hill's suggestion that there was some talk of Beardsley's place being under threat? That was absolute bollocks.

He did struggle a bit just before this game (and after it) and Walshy was still knocking about and Houghton was just signed (freeing up Johnston to possibly play forward).
I remember at a home game against Chelsea a month later and hoping he would come good as it was slightly up in the air. He had a lot of scrutiny given the price tag and Barnes' immediate impact seemed to put even more expectation on him. It was Christmas 1987 when Beardsley finally broke the shackles and his genius stood on its own. He was one of my favourite players. Walshy was my favourite. I always loved the small jinky number 7 types (Scholl was another one)

@@randyborstol2491 Some fair points there. I would argue though that it was the instant, incredible start that Barnes made which gave rise to the notion that Beardsley, who admittedly had a quieter start, was actually struggling. But you’re right, by Christmas he was on fire, and his form stayed that way the rest of the season

Sounds possible. Better than my thoughts:
Campione, campione tune: We'd rather, bank at Barclays, than shop at Littlewoods
Wemberley tune: Littlewoods, Littlewoods, we'd rather bank at Barclays than shop at Littlewoods
If anyone can find the song in this video, please let us know.

distantvoices it’s not a myth if it actually happened, and I don’t need to watch it again to know McMahon turned after letting the ball run across and was put in the air almost identically as in the clip. If you want to argue that the impact was overhyped and a bit apocryphal, that’s fine. I believe even some of the Wimbledon players said that if the penalty had not been saved, they probably would have lost.

39:25 the fella just jumps on the pitch, walks to his seat and climbs back in. Was this the normal thing back then? Is that what all the other people are doing too?

    • @DaveWallerLFC
      @DaveWallerLFC  Рік тому +1

He's not on the pitch, just the pitch-side track. The legroom was really tight in the Kemlyn Road stand so as his seat was in the front row it was much easier to walk along the front of the stand rather than trying to squeeze past everyone on his row.
