Liverpool 2-1 Arsenal 1989-1990

  • The forgotten, second league meeting between these two sides at Anfield in the calendar year of 1989. Of course, the first game in May saw Arsenal snatch the title from Liverpool's grasp in the most dramatic of circumstances. The Reds therefore were looking for a little revenge and achieved it, courtesy of two quality goals. The commentary team is Brian Moore and Jimmy Greaves.

    I'll never forget that free kick for as long as Iive, Barnes will never be replaced as my favourite player of all time. 1980's Sundays = Big match live on terestrial tele followed by chicken butties (leftover from roast dinner), Bullseye, bath and bed.

      red82Mike I find it so sad and very frustrating when I talk to younger LFC fans and they tell me the best player for LFC is S.Gerrard. It's not their fault they can't remember Barnes.
      I'm an AFC fan my FAV is Ian Wright. However, if talk to someone older than me, he'll probably say Charlie George or Malcolm McDonald. It's all the same principle I susposse.

    (Roughly) 1989-92 was a good era for English club kits. Strong basic designs that were similar to the 1980s classics but a bit bolder, with touches like the silver shading on Liverpool's kit, the feathering on United's blue kit etc, that were modern but not overbearing. Then in 1992 everything got very baggy and "big". The designs from the early Premier League era haven't aged well at all, but kits like the ones in this clip still look great.

      If only. What many people forget, is how many games Liverpool had to play in the week of the Arsenal game. Firstly, they played the FA cup final, which went to extra time, in 100% heat(i was there, and it was like a furnace), extra time on the strength sapping Wembley turf, and the sheer emotion of the victory after Hillsborough. Secondly, they played West Ham on the Tuesday, who wre fighting relegation, and fought for their lives, Liverpool won 5 - 1. Then the Arsenal game on the Friday. Why Friday, why could the Football League not give the club and extra day. I will always remmember the words of the late, great Brian Moore, who commentated on the game. When asked about the game, he said" I think that Liverpool simply had nothing left in the tank, i believe, that they are the most talented squad in the country".

    Probably the greatest Liverpool squad for me if all time. Barnesy beardo rush mcmahon whelan houghton staunton nicol. Names of absolute ballers are endless that team today would win the EPL. My hero barnes would be just unplayable just like back then. ❤

      Kenny Dalglish resigned at a crucial stage the following season. Graeme Souness took over and fucked things up royally in one fell swoop by underhandedly selling Peter Beardsley. Barnes became plagued with injuries, gained weight and lost all his pace. leaving him only fit enough to fill an anchor role in midfield.

    I was a season ticket holder on the Kop from 1978 to 1989 - my last season ticket cost £67.00 - and I will admit that the success we had was expected. The era of Dalglish and Rush became a bit stifled. In plain terms, we got bored.
    But when Aldo, Houghton, Beardsley and Barnes arrived, the level of football went to another level. These were such exciting times.
    I think I got good value for money for my £67.00

      Lucky guy! 87-88 team was unbelievable! The front three were superb, the goals, the football was the very best. By 90-91 you could see the squad needed to be rebuilt. Dropped a silly amount of points!

    • @RobCLynch
      @RobCLynch 4 роки тому

      @@andrewbryce2707 the funny thing is that it's only years later that you realise how lucky you were. Because during that era, it was the norm and to be expected.
      When you look at how good we are now and look back to the eighties, you can see some of the rubbish we've had to put up with since.
      Let's hope Jurgen is our Shankly and that the next guy is our Paisley. And let's hope that a new dynasty of success follows.
      We can't guarantee success, but to just be good enough to compete at the top table means that we have a chance.
