Thank you for this informative video. I really liked the way you showed the stages of cutting on the quarter as a size gauge throughout the cutting process.
When they grind it on a wheel, or 'polish' it, that's when they are adding the facets. If I'm not mistaken, the only time they will really 'cut' the diamond is when it is still in its very rough shape. Although it seems pretty unremarkable, you did see the diamond take shape (through 'polishing' it on the wheel').
Corey Williams I'm right there with PlanetRockJesus - I have never found a video or even a description of how a diamond is cut into two pieces. They mention it in the video, but do not demonstrate how it is done. I have always wondered what is used to split a diamond into halves! If anyone can elaborate, I'd be very grateful.
This was my dream ring 28 yrs ago when my hubby and I got married but yellow diamonds were not a thing like they are today. They were sold as lesser diamonds because of their color and what WERE available were so heavily included they weren't worth buying. Most places just did NOT have what I was looking for. This ring is STUNNING all the way around.
It's interesting how they are shaped by these artistic diamond cutters that's what makes buying even a lab grown diamond so very special because the price you pay is forever like that of a Pecaso,Rembrandt,DaVinci perfect in every shape and form with pains taken talent sculptured by one person over days and even weeks,Gota love the artist. 🎉🎉🎉
The residue of the diamond that are cut off, will be collected and used for industrial purposes, not for jewellery. for example this will be used to create diamond creme/paste which you smear over the disks needed to polish the diamond. this because diamond can only be polished with diamonds. Those parts are so small they have absolutely no use for use in jewelry. Hope this answered your question

wow ! im a pedantic my job loving mega yacht builder and i thought i love my job because of the precision in finishing bits. but this .... just wow man incredible.
Does it really take weeks to cut a diamond?! I thought max one or so. Wouldnt the diamonds value afterwards be lost since Im sure it would cost a small fortune to make it if it would take that long??
Ahh a wise guy eh that goes around disagreeing with everyone? Fact: Diamond is the hardest natural material known to man. 10 on Mohs scale bub... "It's not hard" though. Thanks for your input and have a great day.

Im not diamond making expert but these look like first world war machines and techs im sure now a days its actually made differently with more advance machines to minimise the human error
Can somebody tell me what happens to all the falloff diamond dust? Waste? What if the worker grinds a diamond way to far and screws it up? That is a thousands dollar mistake, I've only made maybe a couple of those in my career, and it's a big deal, but a $5,000 mistake on a $100k job is still 'only' 5%, if you screw up a diamond its at least a 50% loss to recut, I would be nervous, the machines now days must have fail-safes to prevent this?
+Hay_ImKeyser_Söze The diamond has its price because of it's sophisticated cutting! before that it's just a hard rock. so before the cutting a diamond is not worth that much! so the loss is not so huge.
NEETA SACHAN Depending on the size. Diamonds above like 50k uncut, pristine, I'm ignorant in the topic but have a second aunt who is in the business and talks occasionally, there are like thousands of ways and types of grades. an uncut 100k diamond pristine pink might be worth more uncut or cut into one or 2 massive rocks.
Also now that I read my OP I think the dust must be sold to grinders and diamond cutters for machinery. Heck I've used diamond cutter blades and stones, and they are expensive!

Great Video Mark. Well done, just enough detail.
This video didn't really show how the diamond was cut. We kept seeing it clamped and taking shape, but they skipped the actually cutting.

Of course none of it goes to waste. The left over bits can be used for diamond blades and such and that’s just one application.
