I’d take the “caller” gmt anyday. I can imagine only a few scenarios where the “traveler” GMT would me better. Most of the time I’m in one time zone, but need to randomly check time for other time zones of my interest. And if I’m out of my time zone, it’s usually for a day or two max, and I find no issue in checking the time using the GmT hand. I find no quick date set a big issue, when I pick up a watch that doesn’t have it it can take A LOT of time setting the date.
I bought the SSK003K1 put a milled clasp on the stock bracelet and replaced the crystal with a double domed sapphire crystal with AR coating on it. Also put a 24hr. ceramic insert on the original bezel. The watch now looks absolutely amazing!!! 😍
Nice Water Sports / Dress Watch, however; Sapphire Crystal and better milled clasp are a must at this price point. Many thanks Rob for this quick review.
Just bought(week ago) ssk003, nice watch 1 OCD issue, the date magnifier seems to be slightly lower than centered over the date field! Am I daft or what?
Personally I'm torn between getting the orange one now and waiting for other colors, because I know they're going to come out with tons of different ones. Standard MO of waiting 6 months before getting these means the price will go down... Unless they're not going to discount this much because it's a new movement. But yeah, I think that orange is a must have. They executed it well. And I'm not one to complain about the water resistance. My brother was just in Hawaii and dove with sharks, swam in the ocean and all that jazz with a watch that didn't have a screw down crown and everything was fine. I've been swimming with watches that aren't 200m and everything is fine. They're not going to leak, nothing's going to happen to them. It's fine. 😂
GMT watches (especially with a rotating bezel), unlike dual and world time watches, are supposed to be set to GMT. Home time is the normal hand stack and local time is the bezel. Unless you move to a new home or actually need to track a third timezone, you shouldn’t notice the difference between "caller" and "traveller's" GMT because once the GMT and home times are set up, you aren't supposed to change them.
A ‘jumping’ hour hand is neat way to correct home time during dst shifts, but it saves you no actual steps. Otherwise, it’s a great fidget spinner for the gmt enthusiasts - who are, nearly inevitably, using them as dual-timers.
The orange one is a stunner. However, the problem is that the GMT hand looks almost identical as the minute hand. It's very easy to mix them up at first glance, at least in the video. I think they should combine it with a few improvements such as a screw down crown, milled clasp and a sapphire crystal. They would be able to sell it at a higher price then, I guess.
Hey Rob I just received my SSK005 Orange Face GMT. It does not say "Made in Japan" at the 6 oclock - should I return it. I got it on Amazon but the dealer on Amazon said all their watches are made in Japan. Any advise would be appreciated. Thank you.
Just picked up ssk001 from my saiko dealer. Even though I wasn’t really looking to buy another watch, He gave me a great discount and I picked one up for $325! Love the watch, will have to get a different clasp. The standard seiko one is awful.
Great video, Rob!! For me, the single best thing about this release is that it means the NH version (NH34?) of this movement will be available for microbrands.. Zelos has already planned a GMT version of their Blacktip skindiver (presumably with this movement). Marc from Longislandwatch has indicated he will have an Islander watch with this movement.. Every single one of these microbrands is going to outclass the seiko in terms of finishing and specs (sapphire crystal, better bracelets and clasps, better case finishing etc)
Why would they when it works? Seriously, this community has been obsessed with "specs". I have an original Seiko monster from 2004 that I wore daily for 8 straight years and nothing happened to it. I never scratched the crystal and the clasp never failed me. I still have that watch, and the clasp still hasn't failed me. Many people have decades old Seikos where are the clasp is perfectly fine. Hell, Rolex didn't move to a milled clasp until 2003 or something. I don't like them, personally. They're too bulky under the wrist and they pinch. I would rather take the slimmer profile of a stamped clasp any day. I've been in this hobby too long and handled too many watches to care too much about whether a watch is "specc'ed out". If something works, it works. You don't need to change it because people on the internet say you should.
I agree with what you are saying. I have some older watches and most have stamped clasps and they work fine. My point is that for $500 would it be too much to ask to evolve to an improved bracelet? The existing one works but an improvement would be appreciated.
@@elarson312 I would agree that sapphire is definitely needed at the $500 price point and Seiko drags their feet on that (most likely due to a lot of money invested in hardlex and a lot of hardlex sitting around needing to be used), but I just simply don't like milled clasps (my opinion). And I don't think they necessarily improve watches. I have handled so many watches that are decades old and the clasps are not milled and they still work perfectly fine. Watches from the '60s, '70s, '80s, etc. I don't think milled clasps are an "upgrade" that much, beyond the feeling of extra solidity. Unless you have something built inside them like an adjustment mechanism and you need a milled construction.
Out of all the 3 watches, not even 1 has an aligned chapter ring. Seiko at its best! And don't get me wrong, I love the watch and actually own an orange one (that also came misaligned and that I had to ask someone to fix it). But it's just unfortunate that a brand like Seiko has been doing this for 20+years and don't seem to care. On these particular GMT models, I would even go as far as saying that most units have the misaligment problems - it's just crazy.
@@longnetter to me and various other people it matters. And yes you can see the misalignments at arms length. And it actually affects the reading of the GMT hand. If a damn 50bucks Casio or Timex can be perfectly aligned why should we accept a 400bucks Seiko to not be? I don't and nowadays I just return them when it happens (with Seiko it happens with most of them). But to each their own. If you can live with and enjoy a misaligned watch, great.
@@longnetter i currently have 4 and they are all fine. But I had to return and rebuy several or even send them to a watchmaker to fix various issues. Seiko's QC is just garbage and that's a known issue. Just do a quick search. Seiko upped their prices without upping their quality. Citizen offers incredible value still...with their Tsuyosas, NY0040s, NB1050 etc

Regarding the similar color of the GMT hand on the 005, that's exactly why I went with the 003 Blueberry.
Good point about the hour hand. Since it isn't a diver anymore, they don't need an arrow minute hand. Should have been a regular baton.
No need for a screw down crown. Its not a diver
