You can add the click spring , i believe lume shot was talking about this , he said he suspected the bezel is the same as another seiko i forgot the model he stated but i believe he confirmed it, probably the reg 5kx but id double check .

If YOU are travelling, you need to bump the local hour hand without losing accuracy, but if you are calling someone you need to bump the "other" hand to keep track of their zone. No one else has explained it that well so far.

Yes ı love seiko but ı simply cannot understand how the fuck can they get pretty much every thing right but the bracelet so wrong. They are utterly garbage ı mean like wtf it should not be that difficult to make somewhat decent bracelets for nearly 500 dollar watches .Otherwise great watches.

This Seiko gmt is a good deal more useful for actually traveling than most all of the so-called true gmts, for the simple fact that it’s not a dual-timer; you get a 24 scale on the chapter ring, and the same on the bezel insert.
Set the gmt hand to utc, and leave it there. You’re going to be referencing it if you’re using this gmt watch as a… gmt watch, and that 24 scale means you’re going to be able to correctly read utc at a glance.
Use the bezel insert to set local destination time. Leave the hour hand on home time.
It’s a good deal easier to simply adjust the bezel insert for a new destination time than to constantly be pulling the crown out - particularly when this one doesn’t screw down.
In short, this Seiko is a triple-timer, or Zulu + 2.
If you don’t actually use utc when you travel, get a ‘true’ gmt, as most of them are essentially dual-timers anyway.
Being able to jump the hour hand, as opposed to the gmt hand, is a cool complication, but one who’s significance is mostly as a fidget spinner for collectors who don’t use them to a practical purpose.
It is amazing how this so often gets missed. I never understood the rotating bezel on GMTs until I saw Seiko (and Grand Seiko) usefully also put the fixed 24 hour scale in the rehaut. Otherwise you're stuck doing the mental timezone gymnastics that GMTs are meant to prevent.
This is how I use my Glycine Airman. There’s one shortcoming to this method. If you’re traveling on the other side of the world, there are times when it can be difficult to figure if home time is am or pm if it is in the 12 hour scale. It’s workable but just takes an extra mental calculation.

I picked one up last Saturday and have been going back and forth between this and my 2021 Speedmaster. I love the way the Seiko feels. From the case to the bracelet. Very comfortable, great style. I’m a sucker for GMTs and also own an SNR033. This one, despite indeed being a budget watch if compared to other GMTs or the Omega is a definite keeper. Really happy with it.
Which one is more comfortable and you wear more, skk001 or snr033? As they’re totally different in budget level

Wear it for a month now , and it is great. Fits perfect into my skx 5kx row. Even went diving with it, still running no fog….. love it… nothing if you want to appear modest…..

Seiko will always remain my favorite watch manufacturer. I've been a fan for over 30 years (yeah I'm old lol).

Whether you should prefer a caller or a traveler GMT function depends on how you use the GMT hand when you travel. I travel quite a bit, and I set it so the hour/minute hands are always my local time. I adjust the GMT hand to the time back home, and the 24-hour bezel to my preferred third time zone. That’s just me. When I was in the military and all our plans were referenced to Zulu or Greenwich Mean Time, a traveler would have worked better because Zulu never changes no matter where I am. Or, if I were an airline pilot. I’m retired now and was never a pilot, so the traveler GMT function has no appeal for me. Buy and wear what you like and what works for you, not what someone says you should buy out of some sense of doctrinal purity.
To answer your question. Steinhart ocean 39 GMT. I have the (now discontinued) gmt premium 500. Screw down crown, 500m water resistance, sapphire dome and caseback. 4hz Sellita 330 movement. $600

For about that price I got a Glycine Airman. That particular model has double dome sapphire, screw crown, locking bezel, a better movement (Selita), and history (Glycine made the first GMT wrist watch).
Amazing video. The watch is quite impressive. With that being said, you can get a Mido Ocean Star GMT for $1K or even a little bit less. ETA movement with 80h of power reserve, 200M WR, Sapphire crystal, Ceramic bezel, 2AR coating, and a "True" GMT complication.

@@dave_clarke You are absolutely right. Other than the PP, I have already owned 2 of the other three watches that you mentioned 🙂, so I don't see a $500 difference in the way that I should see it. Stay in the budget is quite important. With that being said, I thin for less than $1K the Mido is almost unbeatable.
The Mido's 60 minute diver's bezel instead of a proper 24 hour bezel is a deal killer for me.

Seeing those indices in real life vs in video or even still photo is another world. I was always meh about Seikos but having them in front of me at a shop changed my mind.

Good review. I recently purchased a 5KX and while many reviewers would give it a lot of flack, saying it's not an SKX, it was never intended to be. When I got it I also did not want an SKX due to the many shortcomings of the watch. The attention to detail and workmanship, like in the GMT in your review, as well as many improvements makes the 5KX a much more desirable watch for me. Not ISO 200m? It really means nothing to me. I am not a SCUBA diver, and even if I decided to take up this sport, I would definitely use a modern dive computer, not that I don't trust my 5KS at 15m deep, lol! The whole "screw down" crown thing is somewhat of a myth. Yes, there are some watch models that rely on the screw down crown O-ring for the main seal, but a properly designed and applied captive stem O-ring will seal to pretty well any depts until the forces rupture the O-ring, well beyond human capabilities, lol! I am retired from a career in the field of Oceanography and have designed, fabricated and deployed many deep sea sub sea equipment. They all relied on one captive O-ring for sealing at depths of up to 2km. There are a lot of so-called "experts" simply barking up a tree on that matter. So, I digress. I simply love the beauty and real world functionality of the 5KX.

As the watch ages could the O-ring dry out? Intuitively it feels like screw down is such an easy and low cost way to provide near 100% protection/keep it fresh and sealed in all conditions and time frames etc.
I’ve had my blueberry for 7 months now and it’s the watch I wear more than any other. I love the way the bezel plays with the light. Pull push crow put me off but been swimming and not a problem at all. Although it’s usually a bigger watch than I would usually but if fits like a glove

I have been waiting for Seiko to release a GMT forever. So exited. It's the NH34 in the watch mod community. I am currently building two custom GMT's as I am a pilot for work but can't afford the luxury line of GMT's yet and the lorier is ALWAYS sold out when I'm looking to buy one. Don't know why i took them so long to release it but I'm glad it's here finally.
Was liking this Seiko until I learned Miyota released a true jumping hour GMT movement, the 9075. 28.8k vph, 24 jewels, hacking and hand winding capability. Going to wait for micro brands to work with that movement rather than Seiko's.
It looks like a nice movement, but it is undoubtedly going to be more expensive. Traveler and caller gmts are still different styles with neither being definitively better than the other too.

The Miyota 9075 is an impressive competing GMT movement that is both a true traveler's GMT and just under $900 when offered through Bulova as the Wilton GMT.

I loved this watch when I first saw it in video and pictures, but seeing the blue version in person made me love it even more. Definite pick up, especially since most SKX mods will work with this.
If you're changing to a sapphire crystal you have to use the OEM gasket - just something to keep in mind.

@@albertstrohmaier4034 I think that's a great question, and it's a shame you've not gotten an answer in 6 months. I'm no expert, but I believe it has to do with how each crystal type is fitted. An acrylic is fit under constant tension, so it is able to maintain a good seal on its own. The sapphire won't flex obviously, it's a straight press fit, so the gasket is what maintains the seal.
If I'm wrong, I hope someone will correct me, but that's my best estimate.

The SKX is iconic, it will never go out of style. I think this watch is fantastic, I am waiting for mine to come. The only watch I think in the price range I will like to compare it too, and it is a little more, is my Steinhart Ocean One GMT. Great review by the way.
Might be out of "budget range" at $1500, but my Mido OceanStar GMT is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE daily Diver/GMT with a TRUE traveler's GMT movement. I got it during a black Friday sale from Nordstrom online for an even $1000. I got the two-tone version and it definitely striked up its share of convos.
This watch is nowhere near $1500 as you state, it retails for less than $500.

I have a basic Seiko automatic watch that I have owned for several years but rarely wear these days. However, I also own a Seiko LX titanium spring drive watch, which I am very pleased with. The spring drive movement is truly remarkable. Additionally, I have an Omega Seamaster, which is another watch with an excellent movement and is the most anti-magnetic watch in my collection. Lastly, I own a Damasko DK32, which is probably one of the most comfortable watches I own due to its size and thinness. I must caution you that watch collecting can become an all-consuming hobby, but I appreciate your interest in my collection. Thank you for watching my video.

got my 39mm with the white dial on the 3-link "Bader" bracelet watch on amzwatch 3 weeks ago and am loving it to pieces. Absolute fantastic watch that wears super comfortable on my 6.75 inch wrist. Chose the 3-link over the 5-link bracelet for the toolless quick adjustment. Way more comfortable than my Longines Hydroconquest 41 mm.

Since Seiko sell this movement to independant watch companies, there is an Italian microbrand, Venezianico, that also offer a GMT-watch, called Nereide.
It'll be available from Oct. 28 and offers a higher quality than Seiko.
Sapphire-crystal, screw-down crown, up to 200 m waterproof and a ratching GMT-bezel.
And it looks a little more like a sporty dress watch.
Even though the price is a little higher than this Seiko-watch, it offers a much better quality.
After the SKX beeing discontinued I tought the "5" was going to be a joke. But as I watch this it is super nice!
Just to clarify - converting time only into caller gmt is as complicated as adding a date. Nevertheless I'm so happy that this movement will most likely cause an avalanche of affordable microbrand GMTs in this 400-800usd category. The more the merrier ;)

There is nothing better than a MIDO Ocean Star GMT Special Edition (blue and red). Ok, it's twice this price but it gives you a lot of watch at that price. A true GMT with a screw down crown and 200M of water resistance, a true divers watch, with an extendible bracelet which needs no tools, the ceramic bezel, the sapphire crystal... with 80 hours of power reserve!!! Twice that of other watches at 10 times its price!!! gosh the sheer quality of this watch makes it look like a million dollars. I feel so proud showing it off and noticing people staring at it, trying to decipher what exactly it is!!

I was super excited when i heard the announcement but I have since cooled on this watch. It is still interesting and I am in the market for a GMT but I'll hold off. What really excites me is what the micros will do with this Seiko movement and the new Miyota "true" GMT movement.

After this recent GMT drop, ive noticed the price on the SKX jumped to like $600-$800. I know that the SKX is retired, but I just got into the hobby last year and “only” paid $300 😅. I love my 003 orange. The winding of this movement is like butter. Same two gripes as you - sapphire glass and click bezel would make it perfect.

I have challenged myself to put away 50% of my monthly income into stock options which is quite easy since I live frugal without debt. I work as an account executive, and make over $20000. $10000 goes into dividends, and the other $10000 covers my my food plus living expenses. I am seeing improvements in my portfolio, dividends look certain, but I have to attribute this to only to guidance of a licensed fund manager who allocates funds to a plethora of assets. The SKX style is as iconic as the Submariner. I hope they make it forever. I am completely with you about the crown. It is a complete deal breaker for me. Even if it is NOT dive certified, it just seems negligent to me to make this watch, give the upgraded movement, desperately needed, but discard the screw down crown. Why Seiko. It was already there. No development costs. Just use what you have.
I could not agree more - I bought one without reading the fine print and was really disappointed (feeling kind of scammed) to find it does not have a screw down crown. So now I have a watch that looks like a dive watch that's totally unusable for diving. Why would they do this?

Challenge accepted, Max. I have a Christopher Ward Sealander GMT and for USD1000 it smokes this. In fact it moves the game on from Explorer 2 in my opinion, although a "caller" GMT. SW330-2 gives mine +5 sec and 54hr PR. Good looking, well finished, comfortable, versatile, screw down 150m. Brilliant.

As @BB mentioned, this watch is really nice, and I m personally drawn to the SKX vibe, but with Swatch group and Miyota’s introductions of affordable traveler GMT movements I feel we are on the verge of many new true GMT offerings. I personally do not have a need for a caller GMT so I think it is prudent to wait a few months to see what drops.

I was excited when this watch came out. I'm waiting for the price to stabilize a bit before I buy one. There seems to be a premium on them now. As far as other GMTs near this price range - I have had very good luck with Revue Thommen. Plenty of colors to choose from, Swiss made, run great. Usually these can be found for 699 to 900+ USD. However, they turn in sales often, which shaves some off of that.

I just picked one up in Macy's today for $350 plus tax. The sale isn't until 9/23 but gave me the sales lady price. It was their only one. Lucked out.

San Martin recently released a GMT watch under 500$ with even better specs. 200m WR, screw-down crown, sapphire crystal, milled clasp, fully lumed (bezel too). You'll sacrifice an original design for that. But on paper, it seems to be the better watch. I own a San Martin and it has topped every Seiko watch in my collection in terms of quality.
I have the San Martin and Steinhart too, the San Martin is exceptional, but I think this has a certain charm.

The SKX was my gateway to the watch enthusiast world and although the shape is a little played out I was all out to buy this watch as my travel companion, however the lack of a screw down crown has really put a dampener on it for me.
I wonder if a little mod of transplanting the movement into an SKX case is the solution??

I have a Rolex 16710 I bought back in 2003. My wife bought me the 'Blueberry' for birthday/Christmas on it's release. I got it from her just before my birthday when we went on holiday in September. Not left my wrist since. Love it! Looks so much better than the £370 we paid for it.

I've also modded a lot of skxs in my time, so yeah I understand being burnt out on the general look of an skx and not being super excited with this release to be honest. I don't think it changes the game rather it adds to it. Cuz admittedly The general GMT functionality of the movement is stuff that we've seen many many years already in other Caller GMT from Swiss ETA and their equivalent counterparts. Still I agree that this is a pretty damn good value.
For not much more, if you know where to look, and you've mentioned the brand, I think Glycine is maybe one of the best value GMTs on the market outside of this new Seiko GMT.
You could take your chances on a Chinese GMT mevhanical movement, but for maybe under S200, San Martin has quite the offerings.. but, there's that homage territory which not all are down for.
Great points, I would still choose Seiko for the heritage. But let's hope this movement makes it into other micros over time!

Seiko is one of my favorite brands. I have a Seiko 5 snkl 23, and it is gorgeous snd well worth the 100 bucks.
Despite owning 2 SkX007, I still buy the SSK005 orange face. Love it
I have an 8F56-0020 from the 90's. That was a GMT with 100 mtrs water resistance, sapphire crystal and a screw down crown. It would still be a great watch if Seiko could fix it. A new battery and recalibrating is apparently not possible. $875 for the new 5 GMT in Australia. Bit too pricey for what you get.
I still have a Seiko 8f56, a great looking watch with a screw down crown. No problem swimming with this one! One of my most elegant watches.

It is like a paperweight heavy and wears like a brick or five pound weight.
😂. Seiko makes good watches, but I could never get into them. They always make think of a poor man’s Rolex and yes, seikos are heavy.

This is a great GMT watch, the Seiko SSK001, for its unbelievably low price it is a super value for a good GMT watch.
Its MSRP is $475 and the lowest online price I found is $255 delivered.

I traveled to Japans for the first time, and bought the blueberry Seiko 5 GMT. The GMT hand is set to Japan time. Love this piece just wish it had a sapphire crystal tho…
Seiko hit this one out of the park! Commonly available for about $300 to $330 , this GMT is an absolute no brainer for the watch enthusiast. Would mind the Hardlex crystal at all. The only other GMTs in this price range are quartz movement based. Nothing mechanical.
I bought a Steinhardt Ocean GMT 5 years ago, I paid a$750 (aussie$) around us$550 at the time and I love it. I couldn't find better value for the money

It’s beautiful. The price point is incredible. I don’t wear my 1988 Rolex GMT Master much because it’s been serviced 3 times in 35 years for bezel damage, scratches, etc. (It was abused by my father). This would be a nice daily driver.
Bought the orange. It has absolutely tonnes of character and charm. Sold 2 skx’s previously but this one is next level
My favorite reasonably priced GMT is the Ocean 7 GMT Chronometer. I paid around $800.
Wearing the Mikan orange here, and got the black too, a modern classic reference with the new movement.

I cant lie I picked one up on Facebook marketplace for $280. The guy I got it from said man I cant lie to you its like new... I just don't like it. He gave me the original box and everything so I was like I want to give it a try...! after 3 or 4 days I felt the same as he did. It just did not give me the GMT feeling that I was looking for in a watch so I sold it and yes it took a few weeks to sell lol

One of my favorite watches is the Phoibos Wave Master GMT with the Orange Dial, 39.5 case size, screw down crown, the movement is the Seiko NH34 but it does come with a sapphire crystal and a very nice bracelet all for $399 😎
