the "big deal" meaning of "getting decimated" comes from the fact that it was a punishment that roman legions got for failing important task - the commander would make the legion stand in one line, walk along the line, and pick every tenth soldier he walked by, and then all those picked ones would be executed.
I really love shovel knight's ending, they didn't think that "a tragic ending would be better" like A LOT of other games that do so just because, it's really rare to see stories with happy ending that become so popular

19:20 I am SO happy to hear someone who knows the proper definition of decimate :) Maybe people confuse "decimate" for "devastate"? I wonder where the misunderstanding of that word originates!

A shovel is a tool for digging, lifting, and moving bulk materials, such as soil, coal, gravel, snow, sand, or ore. Most shovels are hand tools consisting of a broad blade fixed to a medium-length handle. Shovel blades are usually made of sheet steel or hard plastics and are very strong. Shovel handles are usually made of wood (especially specific varieties such as ash or maple) or glass-reinforced plastic (fibreglass). Hand shovel blades made of sheet steel usually have a folded seam or hem at the back to make a socket for the handle. This fold also commonly provides extra rigidity to the blade. The handles are usually riveted in place. A T-piece is commonly fitted to the end of the handle to aid grip and control where the shovel is designed for moving soil and heavy materials. These designs can all be easily mass-produced. The term shovel also applies to larger excavating machines called power shovels, which serve the same purpose-digging, lifting, and moving material. Modern power shovels descend from steam shovels. Loaders and excavators (such as backhoes) perform similar work, etically speaking, but are not classified as shovels emically. Hand shovels have been adapted for many different tasks and environments. They can be optimized for a single task or designed as cross-over or compromise multitaskers. They are very useful in agriculture.
I mean, really, as someone that watches speedruns, more times than not it would be a correct statement... So many runs have purposeful deaths, damage boosting, being at specific hp/mp/etc. levels, etc. that would obviously seem like an unintentional mistake if you were watching it blind without much knowledge of how the speedrun actually works.
I like the comment about decimation (killing one in every 10 soldiers as punishment) not even being a big deal. The way the word is used today, most people will be surprised to hear that it actually means "to destroy a tenth of" rather than "to completely destroy"
I loved it when they said, "Oh it's even that big of a deal." Except, you know, when your commanding officer decides your cohort didn't perform adequately and therefore must be decimated and you have to draw lots to see who gets beaten to death by his peers.
the origins of the word decimate are from rome, the roman legion refer to a group of 100 soldiers, if someone in your squad was found guilty of a severe crime everyone in that legion was put in a line and regardless of guilt or innocence or if they were a part of the crime they went down the line and every 10th soldier in line was put to death, the word deci meaning one tenth

Anyone remember Tom Thumb? One of the first DOS platform games, run on a music cassette on a P2000 or Commodore16 I think. You were playing for something like 40 minutes until this part where you'd fail over and over again... without the possibility to save a game. My dad did succeed one night. Bless the mid-80s...
"Being decimated isn't really a big deal, you still got ninety percent left" The roman legionaries who are sitting in their tents, crying and drinking after being forced to beat one tenth of their comrades to death with wooden sticks: "Am I a joke to you?"
19:17 The reason that a decimation was so horrific is it was arbitrary. If a roman legion did something considered majorly dishonorable, like routing before the enemy, they would be made to draw lots, and those unlucky enough to draw their death were immediately executed in front of everybody. It was essentially an act of terrorism used to restore order and fear.
