For anyone wondering, it’s pretty easy to hide from thermals (drone) during the day in the desert. The ambush could have been set up with trenches and thermal blocking covers overhead.
Is it possible that infantry was missed as operator was searching for vehicles? Have no other idea how would they miss something that they were looking for.
They only have so much time to view various areas, and a hot desert would make thermal at long distance unusable. It would be hard to spot a small cluster of infantry in such a broad search area. The drone pilot would have to zoom very far which would reduce the area to cover, and he had to also watch the back of the convoy for vehicles sneaking up, as well as investigate all vehicles from side roads.
The most remarkable aspect of this scene is that someone got three HMMWVs capable of driving at normal road speeds without falling apart. Delaying reality is one thing, but producing such a scene is like showing someone a video of a unicorn being ridden by bigfoot.
