We made the switch from Ben Moore Advance Satin to Scuff X satin on all of our woodwork, built ins, cabinets etc. last year. Levels out beautiful, quicker dry time, you don’t feel like you’re going to die at the end of the day spraying it (fumes). We’ve had custom cabinet guys ask us what we used on our woodwork, because they thought it was lacquer or conversion varnish.
Weird, I've never noticed any heavy or bad fumes from advance. I've also noticed and found advance to be considerably harder once cured than scuff-x. To be fair, I've sprayed and brushed advance a lot. However, I've only brushed and rolled scuff-x and have never sprayed it yet. I wonder if scuff-x cures harder after being sprayed instead of brushed. Both paints level fine for me with no issues.
I have been using this product for a couple years now and It is hands down my favorite interior coating. my customers all love the way it looks and feels. so silky
Fantastic product. Chris put it to the test through a sprayer FFLP on a door or trim. Check out the finish. Give it a very fast rub 220 between coats, absolutely amazing. I use Matt as an Eggshell finish. All the best! 👊🏻🤙🏻
I tried this about week ago and really liked it. Really nice uniform finish on walls, very easy to use, can be 2nd coated pretty quickly. Seems like it would be a decent trim paint too. The "matte" seemed more like an eggshell to me, which I kind of expected for a product that advertises washability.
@@arc.handyman1905 Its still resisting scratching really well to this day. Nothing was added. I did prep the furniture by wet sanding and using liquid sander before a primer coat. other than that, it's really durable. it takes a couple of weeks to gas out though. The smell bothers some people
@@petercerrato8447 I used to use advance until I tried scuff x. The deal with advance is it takes so long to cure. Great product but you better know how to use it. I like cabinet coat as well but this scuff x...man I'm telling you the next day it was like a piece of plastic had been form fitted to the wood and I had 2 runs. Both easily sanded out and touched up like they were never there. You can't go wrong with any of the three but scuff x is HARD to scratch and very forgiving.
@@petercerrato8447 yes sir. I use a foam roller. I will cut the edges in but the key is to work it into a fine layer. I don't load the foam roller up. I have before and gotten mixed results. The first coat is a little weird looking but the second...always been on point.
Hi how will this paint behave on a wall in a detail shop with two bays if it gets light spray of water every once in a while or a runaway water drop here and there. Of Course a deliberate intent will be made not to spray towards the wall?
This was terrific. Thank you!! I was curious, you mentioned Scuff X was great for darks. Would you recommend it for whites or another brand? Lastly, how do you feel Scuff X Matte measures against Sherwin Williams Interior Duration Matte? Grateful for your opinion and time!
Really.. Would you use Scuff-x on a front door that is metal over the urethane? Would you use a primer that's maybe tinted a lighter color? @@Idahopainter
Just used Advance cabinet on my Maple bedroom set. I used Behr cabinet on my other bedroom set, also Maple. Sanded, primed, 2 coats of paint. 95% rolled, 5% cut in with a brush. I found 3 difference. Advance runs very easy, drying time & the price. Behr $53 a gallon. Advance $80 a gallon. In the future I'm going with Berh. No matter the advertising about how good water-based paints are. Nothing beats oil. Not even close..
Scuff x will outperform BM advance and certainly anything behr makes. It will level out just as good as oil with some retarder in it. And the durability and adhesion is 10x better. And, aside from dry time, it will do anything conversion varnish or lacquer will do. It will sand to a powder just like lacquer. There is nothing else on the market like it.
Chris could you please recommend finishes for walls and trim? I have been quietly watching info on the product. Great video thank you so much. One thing that’s seems to be consistent is the sheen difference for other brands and lines of BM. So I typically use semi gloss for trim and eggshell for walls. I would like a little less sheen then semi gloss. So could you please recommend a conversion for the scuff X. Greatly appreciate it😊
I've been wondering about these types of paint. I paint rental homes i hate doing touch ups. Most of the time the houses have differnt shades of the same color and gets irritating. I have noticed Behr has this type of paint also and and upgrade paint called dynasty. I use sherwin williams but they never have paint these days when i need it. I had to drive an hour out of town for 1 gallon to finish a job
SW is everywhere but they're always low in stock. I just switched over and accepted fewer store locations. Emerald is solid but right now nothing touches Scuff-x.
I'm currently using BM Advance to paint some bathroom cabinets. The dry/re coat time is killing me! I was considering Stuff X or Command to paint the kitchen. Which of those would you recommend for kitchen cabinets? I LOVE the sheen in the Advance satin finish. Hoping for something like that.
Would this be a product you recommend for mid-higher end apartments? I usually just repaint between tenants, but am looking for something that may allow some scrubbing/touch up. Is there something you’d recommend instead?
With products like this is there any reason why some painters still use oil based alkyd for cabinets? The off gassing from oil paints is such a huge problem.
I use some oil, in certain situations. Depends on availability and quantity and when client wants job done. Also, oil still has big advantages over latex/water-borne paints. For instance, the commercial job I'm doing in a restaurant, latex has failed numerous times due to the traffic and environment. Off gassing can be mitigated by air flow, fans and ventilation. And should be motivated this way.
You briefly mentioned people have used it on cabinets. What is your opinion on this? I have heard many love it for cabinets and others say it won’t hold up.
Never For Kitchens you need 1 or 2k products for that to last. Pretty good For all trim and built ins or book shelves. It still can. Be marred it's not super hard
