damage test would be nice addition to this. specifically how obvious scuffs, scratches, bangs and dings are from being visible, and whether touching it up is with a simple paint brush.
I would like to see this as well. Weve used Aura in our whole house and ind it touches up beautifully...you can't even tell where. For the permanent marker, imwould have just painted over it and called it a day.
I'm a 68 year old paint contractor in a town with a large state university. Second oldest active account at my store. I use Benjamin Moore Ultra Spec 95% of the time. There can be a two week curing time with latex paint
Robert, which Ben Moore PVA primer you recommend for an unfinished garage that's only been taped and mudded? That's my next paint project. I think there's two; Super Spec and Coronado?
My mother-in-law worked as a Color Consultant & Designer for a popular BM dealer/store and a good friend of mine worked for BM corporate office. Both said you get what you pay for and that BM uses high quality ingredients in their formulations, and in my experience painting and learning from mentors in the trade (and Jeff!) that despite the higher price, Aura and the Aura Bath & Spa are the best. I use Matte finish and get great results in 2 coats. I have used Regal Select in the past and I do like it but it has a tendency to sag just a little where Aura doesn't. For trim work and cabinetry pairings I use BM's ADVANCE line. As for actual painting techniques, Jeff has put out a few long videos about "DIY Painting A-Z" and let me tell you all my rooms look pristine using his techniques!
Aura was reformulated to be less sticky but you still need to add water and extender if you want it to behave something like a cheaper paint. 1/4-3/8" nap microfiber covers and Tynex brushes are the only things that will not be infuriating so if you have a heavy texture don't bother with Aura at all. Colorfastness is never covered in any of these reviews. The fact that I can seamlessly retouch a damaged area with minimal prep 7+ years after the initial application in a sunny room is what actually makes Aura worth it.
I’d have to do a dog slobber test over here! My GSD (of my 3 dogs) has never quite figured out how to keep the water in the bowl. Awesome comparison of paint as always and honestly loving that color which is reading as a dark blue on my screen when it dried down.
I like how you demonstrat, just talking not speed talking or yelling. You make sense of the project your teaching, with great understanding of what people need to know. So I just subscribed to your channel. And thank you for your time to share your teaching.
Just had a kitchen remodel using BM Regal. The smell was horrible, it was comparable to spray paint. It helped to have the area sealed off until it was cured a bit.
I'm a painting contractor. Love this video, but I would love to have seen Benjamin Moore Scuff X in this test as well. It's by far my favorite interior paint to use.
Painted my mom's place with Aura 14 years ago and the walls still look great. I found it to be a very "heavy" paint to apply compared to Behr which went on easier but just didn't have that pop. Great video!
I'm in the process of painting my first house. I had initially budgeted based on the Regal Select, but went with Ben to save a few bucks. I'm glad to know that was a good call!
People keep preaching about expensive paints, but I've been taking random leftover paints that are anywhere between 2 and 10 years old, and I'm still having good results. I think technique impacts performance more than the paint itself. You do what you gotta do when you're broke.
Great Vid, very useful! I just switched to Ben about 3 years ago and am never going back! Used to use Behr or Valspar cause it was easy to get. Then decided to try Ben because I was curious… so smooth and that luster! I put their Advance enamel on my kitchen cabs and all house trim and wowza does it ever look beautiful! I did learn that there is some shellac in that one… so unfortunately there will be some yellowing over time, but tbd how much. Thanks for helping me understand their Aura. Going from $40 with the big box store to Ben at $75 was a big leap… so I’m glad to know how Aura came out in your test! Thank You!
Long time BM user and homemaker. It's BM Aura all the way. Based on paint smell, application, washes well. I won't buy any other paint and I have used many brands.
I just painted my kitchen using Regal and it was pretty good. Little to no odor. But the new formulation is shinier than the previous version, and it does sag a bit. I use Ben also, because it’s zero VOC.
I used Ben for the inside of our house and it works great! Wonderful coverage, goes on smooth and isnt bad price wise. I used Aura bath and spa in the bathroom because I wanted a flat paint in there and it was SUCH a pain. Much poorer adhesion and coverage, thinner so runs were something to look out for and $40 more per gallon. Still, there was no other option for a flat high humidity paint.
Dark color paint over light, did a decent job. *You forgot the nasty spaghetti sauce. Pizza sauce for those wild parties. Benny never disappoints. California & Behr. Go for the sale. Sherwin is best outside. *Amazon brand Presto! all-purpose spray is worth every dime. Thx for the demo so we know.
Love your videos and these kinds of comparisons! I have also heard that Aura does best with dark pigments... the colors apparently don't fade as easily. So I went with Aura when we used very dark colors and Regal where colors were light!
The Aura dry time is incredibly fast. Even a decent DIYer can get a room done in one day. I used BM exclusively on my last two houses and I must admit though considering the cost I have been very disappointed in the washability and durability. I don’t find it any better than Beautitone which on sale is 1/3rd of the cost. For the record I had both houses painted by pros. Just my experience.
The paint reviews were good but the picking the appropriate cleaner is important. Rubbing alcohol will take out permanent marker. You don't need bleach cleaner to get out the stains. There are other options that work and won't take off enough paint to cause a problem. I have a remodeling and Interior Design business. We use BEN on walls and Regal on trim. Thanks for your review!
A trick I learned for permanent marker removal ...... is more permanent marker! Let me explain, it works! Permanent marker has a solvent that evaporates and leaves the marker on the surface. Getting more marker applies more solvent to the original marker making it wet again. You then quickly, before it dries wipe it off with a dry rag. You're welcome ;o)
I would use dry erase marker instead of more permanent marker, as you don't have to worry about the 1 second drying time of permanent marker. I was once at a client's office doing an implementation brain storming. It was a couple hours before I realized someone put a sharpie on the dry erase board ledge and I had been using that to COVER the entire board in notes. Run over everything with a dry erase marker and it will all just wipe off, even with a finger.
I'm heading out later to get my paint and still researching which line...I'm considering the scuff x. I chose it for the trimming. Im not an expert, and seems ok. I did notice it dries pretty fast considering how thick it is.
Just repainted my whole house last year using the regal product ($2000 CAD in paint). I must say the finish is nice, however it is very hard to work with as a DIYer.
Something I’ve been hoping to get an answer to: After sanding a wall between coats, do you wipe them down with a dry microfiber mop or something similar to remove the loosened material from the wall? I would think you wouldn’t want the loose stuff left behind to contaminate the paint.
@@OmarGarcia1 thanks I appreciate your explaining that. I’ve watched a few of his painting videos but it seems to always cut from the sanding part to the next coat. I appreciate the insight!
Use to use Natura before they discontinued it. Pretty sure it was zero voc, loved that product, never noticed any smell. Tried the Ultra Spec thinking it was the same, but the smell coming off it is crazy. Weeks later and I can still smell it. People have said that Ben is better but I'm pretty hesitant. Looking forward to any zero voc reviews you do. I'm just about to paint another room.
Natura was discontinued but they have Eco Spec, super good value and zero voc. If you are doing considerable colour change, you might have to prime. Their drywall primer has zero voc as well.
I use BM as its the only half decent paint in my town. I did my daughter's room with Aura and it worked great. Definitely washable after curing for a few weeks (lots of crayon cleaned in the last year). Started my son's room with Aura last week, it is crap not the same experience at all. Not sure if its a consistency issue or what but its splattery and watery and stinks of VOCs. I find it dried really fast when cutting in so left visible marks after rolling. I think we managed to get the exact same color as you for my son's room too lol
The trick with Aura is to cut in then let it dry. Because it blends so seamlessly, you don't have to worry about trying to paint before the cut in dries. We find is far less stressful to paint with and we take our time to cut in the whole room first. After we grab a meal while it dries, we get back to work just rolling out the rest. Always lays beautifully for us and makes the extra expanse worth it. We also find we never have Romeo a second coat, other than small spot touchups once in a while....so overall we spend less.
Have you tried using alcohol to take off permanent marker, I have found that using isopropyl alcohol takes off/removes permanent marker without removing paint alcohol to remove permanent marker without removing the paint
100%. Rubbing alcohol (or isopropyl, or spirit - all the same thing) is one of the solvents that make ink dry quickly. So it’ll also break dried ink up pretty well. The pigment may not be entirely removed, but this is your🎉 best shot.
Rubbing alcohol will 100% break down latex paint. Depending on how long the dirt is being rubbed off, you will start rubbing the sheen off first then work your way into the color. Even if you don’t get into the color you will create flat/dull spots and require a repaint. Stay away from using solvents.
Just painted a living room and upstairs hallway with 2 different colors of Ben…definitely low odor, it was easy to work with…I’d use the same paint but have someone else do it next time…
When you called it purple, I flashed back to a long running "argument" I've had with a bestie; was an item we saw 15 years ago blue or purple. Thankfully, color pickers and official color name websites say that what you have is some flavor of Sapphire, aka BLUE. Glad to know my eyes aren't defective, even if my bud will never concede the point :p.
I used to deliver this stuff to paint stores all over the Midwest. Most of the cost of that stuff goes to pay union wages and transport costs. The aura was guaranteed to be a one coat application. I never bought it to find out. Ridiculously expensive paint all across the board.
Based on the video, I think you've given too much credit to the crayon on Regal- you said it left a little residue behind. That seems to give the win to Aura. Did you forget the magic eraser test?
Ok. I found the regal product was not DIY friendly. Used Ben rolled on smooth, easy. Took 3 coats to go white over beige, tho. Then tried Regal. Did not drag well for me. Ended up with texture even with b4 and between sanding on two of 4 walls. Used purdy white dove 3/8" roller.
Would enjoy this for Valspar. I use it a lot, but could be wasting money on the Signature. The Reserve seems too thick, but is Signature really any better than the Ultra. And are the prices you are saying CAD, because holy hell I would never paint anything if a can cost nearly $100!!! Valspar is like $35-$56, but it had a buy 1 get 1 via rebate for the reserve. I was also at Home Depot and their paint was even less than that, but the guy said they never have sales. From their prices I can see why. Ok, so Benjamin Moore locally, for the Regal Select... $84 a gallon. Maybe I don't know what I'm missing but screw them, that's ridiculous.
Would you expect the Ben in Matte to react similarly in the stain testing. Just used it in a half bath and rethinking whether that was wise. Also going from darker color to white will take 3 coats. Have 2 now and good but not perfect.
Withing the Aura line, they have Bath and Spa, it only comes in matte finish, it's meant to be in high humidity rooms, covers beautifully and is washable. The magic of Aura is that it has more solids and uses more colorant, so it will cover a lot better even in lighter colours. The price of a gallon of primer, or having to do a 3rd coat is higher than the difference between Ben and Aura so in those cases, I would just buy Aura and be happy!
Paint takes at least 10 days to cure, it is amazing to me that you could clean it with harsh cleaners without damaging the paint surface. To me, the test of good paint is its longevity; Benjamin Moore cleans well and looks fresh for over 15 years. Cheap paint will not clean, will be streaky and will look sad and chalky way before that.... How often do you want to paint your walls? False economy, isn't it? 100 dollar over 15 years or 50 dollars over and over again.
Regal has more pigments in it than Ben. Colour retention is much better. Regal ultra matte is washable. For extra 25 bucks use the better quality paint. Benjamin Moore by far the best paint brand.
The takeaway from these is: Buy the cheapest paint. Buy some Dawn. If your sex life or your kids are that crazy, keep an extra gallon of the cheap paint around for touch ups.
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY yes, but let's keep in mind that Benjamin Moore uses a proprietary colorant system that is water base so it has very low voc, while the colorants used by other brands have high vocs, so even if the paint is zero voc to begin, it won't when it gets to your wall.
Dawn spray contains alcohol, and the alcohol will break down the permanent marker, but probably not effectively since it's dilute. Making this comment before I actually see results.
Ben replaced Moore style it is just like promar 200 from Sherwin Williams 30$ a gallon never buy from Benjameen moore just brand name, Aura is the best if u wanna save money and labour time will cover any color just one coat but u have to know how use it not like other paints at all
That paints about as purple as your shirt. At least on my iPhone. I know for a fact I iohoens do not photograph color correctly. Not sure about watching on UA-cam.
@@uknowwho613 definitely not user error. I’m not new to painting. I just went from dark blue to light blue with Sico Muse I did two coats and barely needed the second coat. The Ben covered the green but it took 5 coats to get green out of the pink. I’ve never experienced anything like it with paint. Garbage.
Oddly enough the best paint I’ve used a great deal of which I loved was by PPG brand called Olympic ONE. It was sold by Lowes and one of the first “one coat” paints. Obviously it was not a one coat paint but the durability and finish of that paint was one of the best in my opinion.

The takeaway from these is: Buy the cheapest paint. Buy some Dawn. If your sex life or your kids are that crazy, keep an extra gallon of the cheap paint around for touch ups.
Jeff is not allowed in my house 😅
I’m confused, the Benjamin Moore website states that the ben paint is Zero VOC , low odor.
until you add colorant. Cheers!
Will you come to Pegram TN and redo my house for me :D
Sooo... you mentioned the magic eraser but didn't test it...?
What machine did they use to add the tint?
I have no idea but it is all automated nowadays.
Kids love spaghetti and they know how to make a real mess. I think I'll spend the extra cost towards the Aura
Good
Hi Jeff. Great paint test. Just shows you that price isn't always a better option. 👍
I sure don't know what they're making paint out of today but it's more expensive than blood!
Ben replaced Moore style it is just like promar 200 from Sherwin Williams 30$ a gallon never buy from Benjameen moore just brand name, Aura is the best if u wanna save money and labour time will cover any color just one coat but u have to know how use it not like other paints at all
Get Dulux or Behr paint, just as good. $50.00 a gallon.
That paints about as purple as your shirt. At least on my iPhone. I know for a fact I iohoens do not photograph color correctly. Not sure about watching on UA-cam.
$70 on one tin of paint?!!?!
I'm only 75$ haha
Paint sniffer, eh?
It's a skill that takes decades.
Super spec is cheaper than Ben
The Ben line is terrible. Had to do 5 coats going from a light mint green to a light pink.
User error. BM is well regarded throughout the industry and there is a reason why.
Garbage.
Ben is pretty bad, I agree.
Behr is a more superior paint than BM.

it is true it covers in 1 coat. however it is also true that it looks like sludge on the wall.
Oddly enough the best paint I’ve used a great deal of which I loved was by PPG brand called Olympic ONE. It was sold by Lowes and one of the first “one coat” paints. Obviously it was not a one coat paint but the durability and finish of that paint was one of the best in my opinion.
Feel sorry for the poor chap who actually owns this house
He did this to his own project house before it was gutted for asbestos abatement.
Paint is so cheap
Don’t waste $$$…. Don’t buy BM paint it all sucks. Behr dynasty is miles better
Sorry wrong program
What does that even mean,
