I kind of hope the screenplay just went: "Nic Cage gets the truth out of them" and he just adlibbed the rest.

that's totally something that Werner Herzog would write in a screenplay.

That’s not far off, the script was actually a really generic crime thriller but scenes would be adlibbed or altered on the spot. Here you can see the moment where the script ended and the adlibbing began

@@russellpaloor8225 Of course the gun wasn't loaded. It's a movie. But the focal point of his comment was something that happens in lots of movies. That being: ad-lib/improv, unforgettable/iconic scenes being "captured" by chance, unscripted lines/events/mannerisms & body movements turning out to be better/funnier/more suiting to the film. And I've read about, more than a few times, an actor showing up to/being on set when not scheduled/not in the particular scene being filmed at that particular time, and since the cameras are indeed always rolling even after the director's call to _"Cut!"_ is yelled out, magic (if you will) is captured even though it wasn't planned to happen that way. Which I feel makes scenes such as that in movies even *MORE* special and memorable.

What a brilliant actor he is ! The whole movie is excellent (the iguana- and alligator-scenes !!! LOL) . Thanks to W. Herzog and N. Cage.

The secret to his acting abilities is that he isn't acting. All Nick Cage movies were made by one guy that just follows him around with a camera and sells the footage.

This is probably the only film where Herzog did not miss Kinski. Nicolas Cage is brilliant. Both Cage and Keitel gave Oscar worthy performances in this role.

This was a perfect role for Nic Cage. Herzog really gave him a chance to spread his wings with this one.
