So glad they went with Mountain House. Legitimately my favorite backpacking food. Always hits the spot after a 12 hour hike. I think it is a step up from the other “outdoor” food companies out there. Steve, give me another whiff of that!
@ Yeah it totally did start as a contractor for the US military. I think it was Vietnam or maybe a bit earlier (I will have to look that up though). I know it was being created for long range patrols. They were even the meals eaten in our space program, including the moon. But then they disappeared from MRE’s. I think once I got a granola packet during my time, that was mountain house. But I think for some reason the company shifted to more of the civilian market. I’m just super happy to see them coming back into the military sphere and staying hard now. Because they really do produce some delicious food.
LRRPs and Oregon Freeze Dry Foods aka Mountain House. Good for hikers with ready sources of water, they kinda suck at best. Nutritionally poor and Way Way too much sodium and chemicals and preservatives. Tasty in small doses.
Their mains are too salty IMO but that's a cool fact to know as I didn't know Mountain House was used in the space program. The meals were probably cold weather meals though and they likely wouldn't be in Vietnam though as the Meal, Combat, Individual (MCI) is what people were eating in Vietnam when out in the field. When I was stationed in Greenland while in the Army in the early 2000s I did get Mountain House granola with milk and fruit in a cold weather MRE on a few occasions for breakfast. Absolutely no one ate them cold though, especially in the winter. Not great but not bad if you weren't close enough to eat at a mess hall. 😄

Really love how you can see the evolution of foods served to soldiers during war. Would love to see a collab with Tasting History With Max Miller.
13:13 "The hot sauce is incredible with it" Apparently Solid Snake made a guest appearance in this video
A late night video from Steve! What a suprise. I watch alot of your videos to wind down before bed. Gonna have to get this one out onto a tray.
This is one of my favorite Mountain House backpacking meals. Do our soldiers get the breakfast biscuits and gravy as well? I hope so it's the best.
I don't think they get that one, but thankfully they have this. What a eat new menu
I thought of the Mountain House Chicken and Dumplings right when I read the title. Did not expect to see it actually in the MRE. Not your mothers Chicken and Dumplings, but it is pretty amazing for something that lasts 30+ years. Now I'm tempted to open one up.
2024, not 1924? A little disappointed but I'm glad you are still alive Steve.
Good morning, sir! It's always a pleasure. You are appreciated, sir. Love and respect from Maine 👊 ❤️ 🇺🇲
Don't think I didn't see that glass magically appear at 6:34 Steve. Don't you dare.
What a Great Friday night. A few beers and some Steve Ration reviews. Amazing
