Steve, my husband just started this video and then paused it because he went to go grab a MRE to eat along with you. So, y'all are officially dating now. He's eating spaghetti with meat sauce. I haven't seen him this excited in some time. Take good care of him, please.
seriously, i wonder if south africa just sources things in-country as a holdover policy from the apartheid-era and nobody who produces the rations makes any effort because it's a guaranteed contract
There might be some of that "preserving the domestic supply and industrial base". But more that its "cheaper" to source domestically even if the per part price is higher because the profits that goes to the ration mfg. and the pay to its employees get taxed again and goes back to the state. Part of the whole "multiplier effect" mumbo-jumbo. Quality is ever only as good as the QC or government inspector demands it anywhere for anything.
As a South African I say the only things worth eating in that pack are the peanut butter, super C and fruit roll-ups. I don't even want to think how much sugar is in that ration.
I'm from South Africa and I can tell you that some or most of the Items you can get in the local supermarkets. The noodle soup is basically Cup a Soup ( A South African 2 min soup that you can find in stores) As well as the fruit bar, the cheese. The coffee as well. They don't make the MRE's like how the global ones are made. Even the breyani and that pap and stew doesn't even look appetizing.
So hello from South Africa! Some food identification for you: The pink porridge crap was Morvite. You made it with a bit too much water though. You have to add water bit by bit and mix thoroughly until you have the desired consistency. Unfortunately that will not improve the flavour. The coffee ( I laughed so hard cause I knew what was coming ) was Frisco. 95% of the people I know avoid frisco because it tastes like nothing. But it's cheap so the more impoverished people have to go for that. As for the sauce packets and such; the government calls it budget cuts. We call it the president's second private jet or similar. Glad you enjoyed the breyani though!!
RAJDIP CHAKRABORTY lots of immigration from India. Dinesh D’Souza is probably one of the most famous South African Indian immigrant, and there are whole communities of Indian South Africans in large cities.
Hey everyone, it's great to be back & stay tuned - I have 4 more pre-filmed videos and then back to filming with a 24 hour set of WW2 K rations (Breakfast, Dinner, Supper), an extremely rare and extensive Vietnam Pilot's Survival kit that only 100 were ever issued (this is one of those 100), and a couple modern rations (US and International). By the way, there were 6 sugar packets in this ration, but I mention near the end of the video that there were 5. My apologies for the confusion there. Hope you all enjoy the video and see ya next week with a couple vintage ones from the 80's including a never before filmed US prototype 24hr ration.

There is a trick I've learned that helps prevent powdered mixes from clumping. Don't mix the powder into the liquid, instead put the powder into the bowl or cup first, then mix in the liquid a little at a time. The first addition makes a thick paste, the second makes a thick batter, the third a thinner batter, the fourth should give a runny batter consistency. Once you reach that point you can add the rest of the liquid. This method should give smooth results from even the clumpiest powder as long as you take time to stir each addition in thoroughly. In fact this even works on things like condensed soups and miso paste.
That's the same method I use. A tablespoon or two of liquid in your container, & slowly stir in the powdered ingredients, smoothing out lumps along the way. As you say, it also works really well when mixing thick pastes & powders into liquids, such as wasabi into soy sauce, without leaving lumps.
Or you can pour powder into the water and stir it at the same time. This method requires a bit more practice, but it's less time consuming and works with real porridge too.
So as a South African who ate the rat packs from the border war times, I can confirm the only greatest difference is there are no tins now. Looks to be the same shitty cheese and the energy bar, looks different. In the past you needed to eat the fruit roll after the energy bar or you would not be able to poop for quite some time.

You not the only one that thinks that about that coffee its the worst we all agree lol,you definitely threw to much water in that porridge not to say it would have made it taste any better haha. Yuri Jonker Someone I knew went from South Africa to New Zealand RIP Cause of having to switch from Rands to whatever they have in NZ heard there’s a huge difference in value
These videos have literally no relevance to my life but I’ve been watching and rewatching these for at least the last 6 years for my daily dose of ASMRE
So much sugar and really nothing to eat. Imagine eating this for breakfast and being in full gear in African heat all day. The mere idea makes me feel sick.
@A. Meowzki Leopold the 2nd is actually more common knowledge these days, he may have been directly responsible for over 100 million deaths in the Congo and Africa in general beating ole Adolf by a landslide
I can’t believe he smokes and eats rations over 150 years old…. He puts the mask on for rations 50 years old but eats 100 year old ones and I smoke cigarettes but not smokes older then a week let alone 100 years old
I remember getting one of these as a kid in South Africa. I loved it but I remember some things tasting a bit different from standard store bought stuff. Always been fascinated with MRE's since. I'm a bit jealous you got mutton stew and pap though! Thank you for your great videos and bringing back some wonderful childhood memories.
@@turtleturtle4197 I believe it was during the Civil War that the South began cutting their coffee with a 50/50 blend half of which was chicory. Apparently people grew a taste for it and it's considered a local flavor in some parts. Funny how many overpriced "health" foods have rich histories of cheapness or frugality, coconut water comes to mind...
Well there is also the current drought witch according to South African news seems to repeat every 40'ish years with the current one being the longest and driest so far and the government has turned away foreign aid from long time allies and even country's in deserts like Israel
It might be a problem getting water for the rations, but luckily for the SANDF, they hardly ever get sent into real combat situations far away from civilization.
I've watched a few other guys doing this but you're the best. You obviously love this food and the adventure and I love the way you go on and on about it. You describe how you feel about the way it looks, the texture, the taste, the smell...often in almost poetic terms. Very entertaining, young man.
That is Ricoffy or Frisco brand coffee. Its terrible. We know. You can buy the cheese from supermarkets. The porridge is one of those cheap maize porridges... not the best...Super Cs are always awesome. Fruit rolls are okay. The peach isotonic drink looks like Game(powdered drink we get here.) Rooibos is pronounced "roy boss." It beats all other teas. The climate here is varied. We get some very hot areas and some areas that are under snow about an hours drive apart, especially in the eastern parts. Pap is pronounced "pup," like puppy. Pap usually has butter or meat and is a great staple. We usually have it with an onion and tomato based gravy and sausages or mutton chops. Also have pap with braais (barbeques). That tomato sauce looks like the cheap brand. They really went out of their way to try and keep costs low. Coming from a South African (son of an old SADF paratrooper). The gum will really clear your sinuses. This is one of the many rations you see for sale from companies. They vary greatly though.
Been a South African I have eaten many of these in the late 70's early 80's. Both my brothers and husband had to do compulsory 2yr army service. Not much has changed in the rations. Sadly the coffee is not good quality. Bully beef in a tin (spam) was issued in a lot of rations as well as condensed milk. The pap was not in any rations back then. Mostly tin meat and vegetables.
Thanks for all the useful info, but with all respect I have to strongly disagree on rooibos here. It's readily available on western countries and is aggressively marketed as a natural health drink and costs the same as regular black or green teas, but I personally just both find the taste uninspiring and it's missing all the traces of that sweet sweet caffeine that I'm depending on to get through my boring colorless existence... I guess I should learn to drink it.
People LOVE their sugar over there dude. The KwaZulu-Natal region used to be one of the largest sugar plantations in the British empire. Brought Sugar Cane over from the Carribean and we continued to hone our craft ever since. Lots and lots of sugar.
Soldier 1: Ugghhh..... What's that taste in my mouth? Soldier 2: it's uhhhhhhhh _nut butter_ [Soldier 4 and 3 chuckle in the background] Soldier 1: I don't remember nut butter being so bitter... Soldier 1: *_wait a fucking second_*
Steve.... You can't be leaving me without your vids bud, its been forever dude lol and I was wondering if you would do a Dominican MRE review someday? That would be really awesome man! Please and thank you brother.
That was a 24 hour ratpack, ie: 1 per day as opposed to the single meal ration Americans use. I served before these new ratpacks came out, and just had one meal a day, keeping the energy bar and dog biscuits with the cheese for later.
Re: the lack of tear notches, in South Africa (and I guess some other parts of the world), the plastic packaging is made so you can pinch and pull and the top peels open. I'm pretty sure that's how you're meant to get those open -- no need for a knife. In North America, pretty much all the packaging has tear notches, and the pinch and pull method generally doesn't work. So that's probably more what you're used to.
............I needed this, Steve. My vehicle had some major issues come up 2 weeks ago...expensive stuff. I've been stressed as hell...borrowing vehicles from my parents, wife, sibling, whoever just to get to work...I work as a correctional officer and it has been an especially stressful week at my facility....I've just been stressed and bummed out. I get home this morning from work, and see a Steve video....I am going to open a beer, grab an American Spirit and enjoy this video and forget about life for a few minutes. Thank, man.
Hi Steve, just so you know, you used too much water for the instant porridge and the shake. The coffee brand they use is called Frisco, and it is one of the, if not the cheapest and crappiest coffee brands available. Same with the ketchup, judging by the colour, I'm guessing it had an almost sour/vinegar taste and there is literally no tomato in that. The super C sweets have added, you guessed it, vitamin C and are very popular. Keep up the good work!
Ricoffy is a lot more granular. This looked like Frisco which has more chicory than coffee in it. Real crap. I dont know what the hell happened to that tomato sauce.....
Wow this is nice, I don't think I have seen any rations from South Africa before. It seems like this was a very confused ration. sugar free drinks with lots of sugar and lactose free shake with cheese. I think they were trying to satisfy too many diets at once with this one. Great review thanks.
You are not missing out on anything. Been a South African I'm totally embarrassed with our rations. Nothing has changed much since I ate them back in the late 70's early 80's when my brothers brought many back home. Did not have the pap back then but plenty of bully beef and condensed milk.
Is the MSM even covering that? Pretty sure only real journalists give a shit what's going on in SA. Only a complete fucktard would make a statement like that when someone points out a fact of life that is taking place.
i served in the SANDF from 2006-2009, they haven't changed very much my favourite was the corned beef ration, i looked forward to the little fruit biscuits (i'd save them until just before bed and always never slept because of it), the coffee, the tea and the dextrose tablets, i used to get made fun of because i was the only one who would drink the coffee, the other guys saved up all their packs of it and put them into my stuff bag one day and i couldn't stop laughing when i opened it up and got a face full of coffee aroma
I have eaten many of these as both my brothers and husband were in the defence force and yes they have not changed that much. Never had the pap in the rations back in the 80's but loads of bully beef and condensed milk.
I always love your videos, they give great insightful breakdowns. Its good you go into the ingredients, the history of the meal or production and other little know facts. It really makes these videos interesting. I only was going to watch one since I was trying to choose ration packs for emergencies in my house and have been watching about one video a day. You have a great attitude and I think your videos are fantastic. I look forward to my Steve1989 time everyday that I have set aside to watch one of your videos a day, it helps me stay up beat and being a foodie and a history lover you give me both of the things I love together in a positive attitude. I will becoming a sponsor once my life gets a bit more stable in January, I want to make sure you continue on with your incite and great attitude about everything.
You know, there isn’t a lot I wouldn’t give for a crossover. Or maybe a joke where Steve and Reviewbrah just swap places for a video without saying anything about it.
My father was in the south African army in the late 1970's he mentioned that they used to get biscuits that they referred to as dog biscuits and they used to get 2 tins of condensed milk
Thank you for the video very informative. I am south african. I hope you do more of them as they are extremely hard to come by here. That corn base that you had is called mielie pap or pap for short hahaha always nice with gravy or even for breakfast with milk butter a bit of salt and sugar. Keep on keeping on love the content. Yes and save our farmers please get the word out.
Hey Austin! Got something new (and old) coming out next week as well with some pre-filmed stuff. Then next month it's WW2 K rations and an extremely rare pilot's survival kit that only 100 were ever issued.
.... you could tell by some of the torn packages, the 1 yr shelf life, disorganization, and the quality/taste.... which even steve said was bad for the most part
Nice video! Current member of the South African airforce and I've been on the receiving end of those brown boxes a couple of times. Not fine dining but it gets you through the day. Still better than some of the UN MREs they've tried to feed us in the Congo at times.
Good day Steve, first off I would like to say awesome videos I love watching all of them, then secondly I have to tell you that the Ration Pack you have is not those sold or produced for the SANDF, I am actually serving in the SANDF and had the fortune to go on a few exercise this year with Ration Packs 2015 and 2018. The one you had in this video is actually produced by a well known company that produces the Rat pack for private/commercial use and they actually have a wed site where they sell them to hikers, back packers and so on. Yes they tendered for the SANDF but they did not get the contract. Our current ration packs still has the tin cans and is copy of the SADF rat pack only with fresh halaal items in them. There is differences in the energy bars, the fruit roles and the biscuits, even the nut butter is not in the military used one, and why they call it nut butter is due to copy rights. Sorry for having to tell you about this, I will see if I can get you one and to send it to you. PS our army uses the rat packs waaaaaay after the expire date.
Rooibos tea = red bush tea - high in anti oxidants (it's a herb growing along the west coast area) & maize pap = maize porridge - used like you did as part of a dinner meal (it's to replace starch).

This requires so much water with all the drinks and porridge, it would be hella inconvenient in the field/combat.
Well there is also the current drought witch according to South African news seems to repeat every 40'ish years with the current one being the longest and driest so far and the government has turned away foreign aid from long time allies and even country's in deserts like Israel
It is intentional to make you hydrate. You see it a lot in extreme hot or cold weather rations.
@@redwolfexr interesting. That makes sense. 👊👊
No it doesn't, I am South African and he made the coffee and porridge incorrect.
It might be a problem getting water for the rations, but luckily for the SANDF, they hardly ever get sent into real combat situations far away from civilization.

“I hear Steve echoing tonight”
Great info!
My dad was also a paratrooper. I remember him bringing us MRE leftovers when we where kids.
Seconded, thanks for taking the time to share. Very interesting.
Jeez, when my folks told me about how rampant diabetes is in South Africa, they weren't kidding. This is the proof
People LOVE their sugar over there dude. The KwaZulu-Natal region used to be one of the largest sugar plantations in the British empire. Brought Sugar Cane over from the Carribean and we continued to hone our craft ever since. Lots and lots of sugar.

Rohan Barnard It looks like Ricoffy boet. Porridge also looks kak cheap.
Ricoffy is a lot more granular. This looked like Frisco which has more chicory than coffee in it. Real crap. I dont know what the hell happened to that tomato sauce.....
Porridge looks like chunky Pepto-Bismal :(

Steve, ever think about doing a show combining your favorite items to make the ideal MRE?
Wow this is nice, I don't think I have seen any rations from South Africa before. It seems like this was a very confused ration. sugar free drinks with lots of sugar and lactose free shake with cheese. I think they were trying to satisfy too many diets at once with this one. Great review thanks.
You are not missing out on anything. Been a South African I'm totally embarrassed with our rations. Nothing has changed much since I ate them back in the late 70's early 80's when my brothers brought many back home. Did not have the pap back then but plenty of bully beef and condensed milk.
Well a real lactose intolerant has no problems with hard cheese. My doctor even recomended eating more of it as a easy way to get calsium.

EHW2 already sold out, I want one biryani is my favorite food
i served in the SANDF from 2006-2009, they haven't changed very much
my favourite was the corned beef ration, i looked forward to the little fruit biscuits (i'd save them until just before bed and always never slept because of it), the coffee, the tea and the dextrose tablets, i used to get made fun of because i was the only one who would drink the coffee, the other guys saved up all their packs of it and put them into my stuff bag one day and i couldn't stop laughing when i opened it up and got a face full of coffee aroma
All I can say is Thank You for Serving your Country.
I have eaten many of these as both my brothers and husband were in the defence force and yes they have not changed that much. Never had the pap in the rations back in the 80's but loads of bully beef and condensed milk.

Oh I forgot the Army rat pack does not have noodles in it, it still has the soup and also no water purify tabs.
Thank you for the first person info!
Do you still get pickled fish?
No they changed it with a can of lucky star sardines
OMG worse! Do you still get the one with condense milk? Mix a coffee and sugar in the bag, add cold water and the condense milk to make a frappachino?
Rooibos tea = red bush tea - high in anti oxidants (it's a herb growing along the west coast area) & maize pap = maize porridge - used like you did as part of a dinner meal (it's to replace starch).
