So true. I once sat in a café on a nice sunny sunday afternoon and because there were so many people on the streets the café was full. A couple asked if it is okay to sit at my table and so we talked to each other. But the woman was bewildered because I was on my own (as a woman). Gotta love the 70s/80s rock in the background. The food looks good too! When I lived in Japan "strawberry shortcake" was a completely different concept than what I grew up with in the USA. Here, we literally use "shortcake" sponge (usually it's just the bottom half of a biscuit) for the bottom layer (about a half inch thick), pile in a bunch of chopped and sugared strawberries, and then top it with whipped cream (fresh or from a can) and the other half of the biscuit and add more strawberries and cream on top. Being a fast-food type of concept, the quality and selection of meat at LIKE isn't the greatest, esp compared to more traditional establishments (tbh at a certain price threshold, I think it actually kinda sucks). There are plenty of establishments where there are solo grills and counter seating, you just gotta look for them, but LIKE's price point and numerous outlets are adequate enough to make it popular with salarymen who need a quick, no-frills yakiniku fix (myself included occasionally). However, if you go with multiple servings of meat, you're actually better off at another chain like An-An or Gyushige, which to me is better quality meat and meat variety, actual charcoal grills (LIKE uses gas), tablet ordering, and a bigger side/drink menu and they happily take solo customers as well.
