    Hello Laura & Carlos
    I still remember the Ep100 "WHO LIVES A NOMADIC LIFESTYLE - Azores may be perfect for you"! It was my very first time in the Azores on the island of Pico. You had seduced me with your beautiful inspiring videos and I am always so grateful for that. I especially like the passion and authenticity of your videos. Best regards from Bjorn

    Hi Carlos and Laura, great video. We love the Azores. We have a home in Sao Miguel and have visited Sao Jorge, Terceira, Pico, Faial and Santa Maria. We live in Arizona…but plan on living six months here and six months in the Azores. Thank you for sharing. We enjoy your videos. 🇺🇸

    PONTA DO SOL: THE FIRST DIGITAL NOMAD VILLAGE IN THE WORLD. There is nothing to invent that hasn't already been invented, for example in Vila da Ponta do Sol in Madeira. Firstly, it is necessary to appoint a local leader of this project to attract digital nomads and to regulate and monitor this activity to a minimum. Bureaucratic ease and speed will be required in granting visas. Support infrastructures are necessary, such as a good Wi-Fi network, accommodation, restaurants with,
    take way, uber platforms, tvde, translators, schools, hospitals, congress centers, supermarkets with bio, vegan and other products. Local populations must be open-minded to welcome these digital nomads who necessarily have habits and customs that are different from those of the locals. But there are also risks and some powerful and hidden ones to a pleasant quiet and peaceful place, which is not necessary to mention.

      We appreciate you sharing this important information, all of this makes sense. I have been to Ponta do Sol, nice place. There are Digital Nomad center's all over Europe and other worldwide places. Nothing new, gaining popularity. We believe the Azores is the perfect place to work remotely! Take care!

    Thanks a million for sharing Carlos and yes, next year I'm ready as I think you already know... Ready to 'go back' to do the digital nomad jobs I used to do and, as retirement comes up next year, this is where I'll be heading again...

      @@ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552 😊 I agree - at least when it's summer 🏖️ and, if I in anyway can make things happen between at least 2 continents, the Azores are definitely one of the spots - know exactly where and, will be back.... And yes, will keep you updated.. Take care and, have a good week in Canada... And thanks again for sharing 🌹😊🌹

    Love your videos! So curious about the Azores, been reading/watching UA-cam videos for a couple of years now. Planing to visit with the family spring next year. Living in Sweden, and looking for a relaxed, safe, island life with mild winters. I believe Sweden is a lot like Canada...All the best, Sandro

    Hi Carlos, Laura - Big fan of the channel for a few months now. Have my heart set on the Azores. I can work as a digital nomad, I have been doing software development for over 20 years, and working for a company in the US would be great, - but - I would like to hire people. I had an outsourcing company in Belarus for 6 years - not sure what is involved in setting up a company in Portugal, - ideally I would start on the digital nomad visa, and then when things develop - I hire people to help me, but I am not sure how easy that is. - I would love to come out to the Azores for 3 months to look around this summer, since even the digital nomad visa process can take 6 months.

    You guys have always been great about answering questions so thank you for that! Here's another. My family is a close-knit family and our parents are getting to an age where they may need us a little closer by. If we were to move, they'd probably be coming with. Would the healthcare be good enough for someone in their mid-70s on Pico? Are their many people that age on the island or do people move to the mainland as they get older for better medical facilities?

      You are welcome, if we can answer, we answer. As for health care on Pico and the smaller populated islands, in all honesty could be a lot better. This is an area that needs to improve. The island of Pico has 3 small centers, the main one being in Madalena...it has been updated, but it's still a health center. If there is anything major, they would either take you the sister island Faial, fly you to the Sao Miguel( best hospital in the Azores) or Continent. Where they take you wild depend on the severity of the health issue. They should be spending money on health, instead of things that are of less importance. This is how I see it, I hope it helps. Cheers!

    Hey Carlos. I respect you guys, but as a local I would appreciate that you don't call these people to our island. As a portuguese I would expect you would be more sensible to this topic as the country is actually struggling a lot and this is one of its many problems. They don't actually bring anything to the place and they basically take resources. They might benefit a couple of businesses and people but that's it. The country and specially a region fragile like Açores don't need more people with weird taxation regimes and incomes that are completely disproportionate to the local life and what people from here can pay: for food, for rent, for real estate, for whichever service really. There are already restaurants charging for burgers 25 eur and all of this is to cater just digital nomads and rich tourists that care very little about locals and local culture, bur rather treat it as disposable. We should learn with examples like Canary Islands. Bali, etc to not transform this precious place into a Disneyland.

    • @ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552
      @ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552  Місяць тому +1

      I appreciate you and your opinion. I also don't wont 25 euro burgers, that is not good for anyone, especially locals. As for a few people coming to work here for a few months out of the year in the off season, I have no problem with. Please keep in mind that these are not 1000's of people, it's a small group that bring in money for the economy. They usually stay in places that would be empty, they eat at restaurants that would be close to empty etc. It's not only a few business benefiting; the incoming money trickles down through the economy. For example; the money first enters the country/islands through the company that sells the package, from here the person that owns the rental property benefits, the car rental company benefits, the people working in these companies benefits, more people get employed, they take the earnings and buy close, groceries etc. You see how it trickles down, and it's not just a couple of business benefiting. I really believe the main problem is the Government and the system that have existed for way too long and some of the locals take advantage of it. My feeling is that if more money comes into the country/islands the minimum wage will continue to climb, health care will improve, locals will be able to afford more etc...820 euros a month is way to low. I want these islands to have positive controlled smart planned growth, it's the only way for the locals to have more opportunity here, to stay here, not leave to another country, this will lead for the local to have financial growth as well. I took my time to explain my position, like you did yours. I really believe this, I want improvement all around..so everyone can benefit. There is no perfection anywhere in the world, we re lucky to be here. Take care!

    • @jplrodrigues
      @jplrodrigues Місяць тому

      Thanks for replying and explaining your position. I still think we are underrating the consequences of all of this. And yes, they can in a few years reach 1000s, as they did in many other pure and 'undiscovered' places. This was the talk I have listened back in the mainland in 2017...or Madeira during the pandemic. Also, European politics are quite complex and we can't make it as simple as the government, since there were 2 crisis in the last decades, commissions like troika that imposed measures for investment, etc. It's also a bit of a new colonialism economic model to think wealth is created always from the outside, that it generate jobs and creates infrastructure, money flows and therefore the lives of locals benefit. Matter of fact is their lives won't ever be as good and easy as the investors' or the visitors. There is a connection more than proven in Europe between the arrival of digital nomads and the cultural decharactarization of the host place, as well as a sick increase of the rents. For your business model or the examples you gave this works, but basing an economy in tourism and services is a mono way of growth and in places like this quite unstable. It's OK when allied to other sources, but Açores are more and more getting too dependent on this as luxury starts to sprout in all the islands slowly. We need to create jobs, but not just badly paid ones like the driver, the waiter, the cook, the house keeper and manager, the tour guide, the barista etc. Unfortunately the increase of salaries doesn't accompany the increase of prices in every service. There are also workers with other professions that wanna continue living in the place they are from or simply Portuguese from the mainland that come to work in enterprises or in public services like schools, health centers, etc and they too deserve to find affordable housing or simply be OK to go out to eat in such an isolated place. Unfortunately when people understand the kind of money digital nomads can pay for basically anything, the market all turns to them because is more profitable and they have themselves certain expectations of what they can get. We all know Açores lacks a lot of things and is dependent on importation, so bringing people that are dependent on pizza napolitana for 20eur, avocado toast for 12eur or tacos for 15eur isn't very sustainable, nor reflects the true nature of the place.
