    Hello Laura and Carlos.I don't regret a single day. I can relax very well on Pico. Life can be so simple and that's why it's so beautiful on Pico. This island is like medicine for me and heals me from everyday stress in Germany. Thank you so much. In Sāo Roque there are also many public and free barbecue areas right by the sea. Last week I went shopping at the supermarket HIPERCAIS( Good and cheap). Beef, charcoal, wine from Pico and cheese from Sāo Jorge. I had an unforgettable beautiful evening on the Atlantic...🌋🐬🐳

    Carlos, what an awesome 10 reasons for me to bring my wife and stay for 2 months. But, alas, I'm stuck until at least 3 - 5 more years until retirement. Maybe a long vacation is in order before things get too crazy here in the US. I'm amazed at how many people will drop thousands of dollars to go to Hawaii or Disney World, but have never even heard of the Azores. Thanks to you and Laura for bringing tranquility to me through your videos.

    I confirm what Carlos said about fast internet. My husband and I live in São Mateus on Pico Island in the Açores, and we have 1Gbps download / 100Mbps upload fiber internet service through our ISP, MEO, which includes cable TV and landline phone service for less than 40 Euros per month. Being at a junction point of undersea communication cables has its benefits.

    I had recently received permission to work remotely from abroad. And here's Carlos with a fresh new video on what topic? :) amazing content as always. Something I'm trying to figure out is 3-6 month let's in the Azores as a lot of the "coworking" spaces are extremely expensive, even for a British person. Airbnb and stuff is fine but I think for both locals needing to rent long term and for the 3-6 month (or longer) rentals people would welcome long term stable rental offers in the larger and even remote islands.

    What I also like since I love to travel, is that if the Azores are your primary residence, flights to the mainland are capped at €130 round trip making a trip “La fora” very doable every few weeks.

    The Azores are extreme beautifull, But also extreme vunerable. but certainley not perfect.. nowhere in the world is ..
    People have in enormous large amounts emigrated from the azores, and that is for obvous reasons.

      I appreciate all opinions, agreeing with some of them is another story. I will say that I am positive person and will like to think that there is enough like minded people on the islands that will protect it, some are locals, some are immigrants and some are Expats. I will also add that when everyone immigrated, these islands started to become ruins, I always give special acknowledgement for the return of the immigrant, they started the shift to better island days. Thanks for taking the time Jorge, these discussions are important. I will end in saying that these islands are a lot better now than they ever were and I'm not talking about the beauty. Saude!

      @@ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552 You're complete right Carlos, The Islands are much better of then we left them behind in the 70's. But my opinion is that from archievement that Portugal entered the EEG. And they will get better, due to people like you and other investers.. But yes you do see that the prices of homes/land are significant rising in the acores.
      (Only a part of my message sent yesterday, was posted.). What i would like to mension, is that people emigrated from the acores not only because of the poverty, that was perpuated by the dictatorial regime of Salazar. But also from the vulnerability of the Islands self. If you look back in time you will see that very 20,30 or 40 years theres and earthquake, and that many properties were damaged, Look what is happening to Sao Jorge at the moment??
      It will be fare to mention to your followers (Me included), that to invest in the Acores there's always an uncertain risk of the earth shaking and the consequence of that..
      But a smart invester will already done his homework,.. I hope..
      And the lack sometimes that you don't have sufficient building material, like know the case in Pico, (lack of building sand).
      I take that for granted, because also i myself would like to settle in the acores in a few years time.
      I appreciate your comment, and wish you a lot of good luck with your plans.
      All the best to you and laura..

      @@ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552 no doubt the quality of life has improved overall on the Azores islands. Too much development however will no help the quality of life. There are already complaints from people in certain parts of Sao Miguel complaining of too much tourism in certain areas they have stopped going to certain favorite areas they have been going to all there lives because they have been ruined by crowds of people. Just imagine your favorite coastal areas, restaurants, the street in front of your house swimming in tourists snapping pictures and acting like they're at a theme park or a zoo taking pics of the "exotic" natives participating in their "quaint" little parades and festivals.

      @@afaria6173 Totally understand your point, that sounds like mass tourism. I wouldn't want that either, we want quality over quantity. It will get busier on these islands, but not to the point of mass. If the Gov;t and tourist business's market responsible, it will only attract the special ones not the crazy mass ones. Just my personal and professional opinion. Saude!

    So much foreign investment in the area and the health care system isn’t keeping up. That’s troublesome. More investment in this area is long overdue.
    As a network technician, high connectivity speeds are easily available in the Açores because networking cables are buried in the ocean nearby.

    Hey Carlos! I`m watching your channel from start. Now I have to ask: Where, on Pico, is a house for rent for 300 Euro? Please tell me!!! And aren`t the restaurants closed in the wintermonth? And it can be cold offseason. 7-12 Grad. That`s not so nice, if you have no heatingsystem in the house or only in one room.

    • @wayneparks
      @wayneparks 2 роки тому +3

      As a homeowner here on Pico, I can't speak to your question on rental prices, but I can assure you that during the winter restaurants are still open for business. There may have been a few more but I only know of 2 that closed for the season. The majority of them remain open either with reduced hours or with call-ahead service. If you're in a smaller village then my recommendation would be to talk to your local restaurant owner and let them know your needs. I know of one individual in our town who has a static arrangement with our local restaurant, Arco-Iris, which just had Mexican food night last week and my other half and I each had a combined total of 4 burritos, 2 sides of fries, 6 beers and one neveda for 35 Euros. It was delicious. The key to staying warm is staying dry. We have a dehumidifier that we ran (and still run) continuously and it kept the house very comfortable all winter. There were some days that were a little chilly, but you just throw on a sweatshirt. At no point this winter did I ever feel like the temperature was an issue. We have a fireplace and we didn't even build a fire in it last winter because it didn't get that bad.

    • @ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552
      @ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552  2 роки тому +2

      That is a very good question. The answer is a big yes, you can still find long stay rentals in the off season starting at 300 euros. This would be more in a basic house or apartment. Please keep in mind that you might not be in the main village, but close. The number of 300 is a starting point, you will find more availability in a modern property closer to 500 or 600, which is still cheap than any other safe destination. We just spend the winter in the Azores, the coldest it got was 12 degrees Celsius, most was a cloudy/sunny 16...sometimes it reached 19. I guess if you live in Mexico and are used to 32 + heat, than it might be a little cold, but still not as bad as Canada at -35. Most of the restaurants are open all year round. I hope this helps! Take care Klaus!

    Sorry Carlos. We've already seen what this did in Lisbon a higher cost of living for the locals a shortage in housing. Increased cost in housing, gentrification and the locals moving to the periphery of desired locations because they can't afford the rent or to purchase housing. For the most part Ex Pats and nomads are ignorant of the local economics and are willing to pay twice as much as Portuguese people. If our families can no longer live in the Azores because of the boost in cost from people who have no loyalty to our islands or our culture than you might as well call the islands theme parks and call it a day. Carlos I understand you have a business but marketing the Azores as an ideal location for nomads is not a responsible thing to do for the people who live full time in the Azores and are trying to make a living. Sure it will benefit a few individuals but as a whole very irresponsible.

    • @wayneparks
      @wayneparks 2 роки тому

      To J D's point, gentrification is going to happen whether you like it or not, and in my opinion, it's the Azorean government's responsibility to mitigate its negative effects, not Carlos's or any digital nomads who may live here for a time. What is the government doing with all this extra tax revenue that they are receiving from all this foreign investment? Are they building affordable housing to prevent displacement? Are they reducing or freezing property taxes to protect long time residents? In many areas already the Azorean government has prohibited large-scale luxury development. What about stabilization vouchers for long-time residents? Is the government doing that? How is the government helping to make it easier for more housing to be built to meet the strong demand for it? After all, low supply drives up prices for everyone. These questions are the Azorean government's responsibility to answer, a government that temporary residents aren't able to vote for.

      I appreciate your opinion Antonio, but only agree with some of it. I too don't want mass entry of people or tourism into these islands or the Country for that matter. I also believe the change that is happening now needs to happen, in my heart I really feel it will make Azores better and more protected. I feel this way because this primary change has to do with like minded immigrants, expats and locals. You mention irresponsible, from where I'm standing I feel like I'm being responsible. My responsibility is personal, first and foremost. I was raised to share with others, and in this case we're sharing the wealth of our islands, my birthplace. In sharing, we give to our local business; restaurants, tourism, agriculture, our overall economy. In sharing, our airports, hospitals, higher education, roads, will get updated to a higher level of quality. In sharing, our ruins get a second life, our construction workers have work, their families can eat, buy close and so on and so on. If we don't share and welcome our immigrants and expats then we go backwards, most do not want that. I do have a tourism business that I enjoy, but even more important is my love for this place called the Azores. At the end of the day there is no perfect country or place, we are never going to like everything. As far as ignorant expats and nomads; we have not run into this at all, it has been the opposite. I know a lot of immigrants and expats that have more care, passion and loyalty to the Azores than some who are locals. This is not only our experience but of many that have spent a lot of time in the islands over the years, yours might be different. As for Nomads, they don't actually buy property, they visit for a while, spend money while they visit, make friends and most pass positive forward. I have gone way too long with this, but as you can see I'm not only passionate about this subject but believe in my heart this is our truth. I also wanted you and others that share the same opinion to understand a bit of who I am and where I came from. We only want the very best for the Azores and all the people that live in this wonderful place Wishing you all the health & happiness in the world. Saude!

      Carlos I’ve been watching your Vlog from the beginning i have a general idea what your views are. I disagree with you regarding ex pats in the Azores. They tend to overpay for property and services because of a general ignorance about the local economy. Digital nomads boost the cost of living they pay too much for rent. That increases the cost of living for locals. What has occurred in Lisbon is a perfect example of this. Bringing these people in will do nothing good besides put some money in the pockets of a few individuals. Yes I stand by my statement that promoting our islands as a digital nomad hub is irresponsible. I’d rather see more people moving back to the islands with roots in the islands than digital nomads. I have zero interest in these people as well as the bulk of the locals. Although some of the ex pats are knowledgeable and have good intentions and contribute I’m not so convinced that they have the wisdom to know what changes are good or love for the islands like someone with roots on the islands. I’ve seen enough to get the general idea that some of them are quite ignorant if the culture and what is important to locals.

      I’m aware that change, growth and some gentrification will occur and as someone who will in the near future will return to live full time. I am willing to share somewhat but there are limitations. Yes they are somewhat welcome as long as they make themselves a nuisance as a whole. Let’s not overdo it the typical person from the islands smiles and is welcoming face to face but that’s just because we’ve been brought up that way it’s no indication of genuine friendship. But yes Ex pats and immigrants are welcome to some degree. Digital nomads not really.
