  • Hi Guys,
    Join us on this video and help us get our vacation rental ready for our special guests. We are 2 weeks away from their arrival, need to get the rest of our to do list complete.
    It has been a long happy hard working adventurous road, with quite a bit of delays and frustration thrown in. At the end of the day , it has all been worth it.
    The most important for us is that this place becomes a comfortable and happy place for our guests, just like it is for us.
    We hope you enjoyed the video and the progress that we have made to this point.
    Love having you with us on our journey,
    Carlos & Laura

    Another beautiful video, the weather is gorgeous! I can certainly understand your frustration for not getting things finalized in your home, but people on the islands seem very layed back, plus the workers with trades seem to overbook and leave you in middle of things, hope all goes well and you don’t stress too much… Zena is having the time of her life, always love to see her. Enjoy all this beauty.

    I feel fortunate that any work on our family home is done by our extended family who lives there & they have a construction and home improvement company. Others have told me that they struggle to get work finished just like you guys. That is so frustrating. I hope you guys get things finished soon!

      It is awesome if you have a relative that can do the job that is required. I also see some that are very handy and tackle it themselves. I believe there is going to be a change for the good, and this will be welcomed for anyone coming from the outside and for the ones that live here. We are at the finish line. Take good care!

    Thanks for the update on your reno. You guys are doing an awesome job with the landscaping, and it looks great! I feel your frustration about getting everything perfect, but all your viewers are sympathetic about the challenges you're facing. It seems to be a common theme on the Azores, and island life around the world in general. Whatever you do, stay healthy and don't stress over the things you can't control.

    Carlos, your with barbecue project is a prime example of a trend that drives many of us nuts these days. - over-promising and under-delivering. At least you have the "poor-man's" bbq to get you by until the project is complete. Frustrations aside, as with so many of your videos, I could sense the deep gratitude that you and Laura share for the culture and beauty that is the place called Pico Island. Zena seems to have an appreciation for it as well! Don't work too hard...

    You are right to speak to the challenges faced with the project. I've experienced your disappointment and frustration. If only people were upfront about what they can or can't do. I agree, the vast majority of trades are honest with timelines. I can feel the hurt in you. In the end all will come together my friends. Abraço from the mainland 👏🥂

      We are not asking for too ,much, just to be treated like they would like to be treated. It's very important to be respectful, caring and honest; a lot of these workers think otherwise. It's important to speak up, or else this will continue on this sad path. We, the good caring people will prevail. Take good care!

I have looked at property there to buy would love to be able to do long stays but owning something is out of the question for me because of the hard time finding good labour. We feel your pain! Someone told us that part of the reason this happens is that people here don't like to say "no" so they tell you what you want to hear. I'm sure other times the worker is just a flake! I've heard locals have to deal with the same issues finding good workers, and get frustrated too. Don't lose sight of how far you've come though! The place looks amazing! And if a few things are unfinished for now, your visitors/renters will understand. Fingers crossed for excellent weather for your first renters' stay. Good luck and hope to see you before too long, when the dust settles over there ;-) and you take that ferry over again.

    This was such an awesome video. You like us and many others are and have experienced the same empty promises. We contracted with someone to build a structure for us to replace a gate. It was a simple structure so that we could finish it by adding wood to it. We offered payment, said he could do it at his own pace, he said no payment necessary, but needless to say the structure was never done. We ended up building in California and taking it over. Very good decision and we are extremely pleased with the outcome. Contacted someone to help with gardening. Unfortunately it was during the week long festa in lajes. He told me he would come the following week. Never showed up. It is just sad to me that everyone needs a job, but no one wants to work. Just imagine where we would be if we did not show up for our employers. Have a great stay😊

    Hello Laura and Carlos, it's a pity that you are being displaced by your workmen. We have arrived in Sao Mateus yesterday evening and have not yet been to our reno site.
    Today we will relax a bit because we once again had - thanks to TAP (take another plane) - a somewhat adventurous journey with an unplanned overnight stop on Terceira after our overnite stop in Lisboa.
    We are very curious to see what our craftsmen have been working on since September. But first we will enjoy our "vacation" this Sunday before we go to our house tomorrow.
    We also hope to meet each other in the next few days.
    Best regards Dagmar & Ansgar

Eu gosto muito de video quado voce fala em Portuguese. Laura cozinha muito bom. Eu gosto de ovos. I try to practice Portugues almost every day. I know that one day I will be abel to speak it fluently. I have a question my husband believes that living in the Azores would be very expensive and not affordable to retire to. He says it will be like Hawaii way too expensive. Can these two places be compared to each other? Obrigada ate logo 🇺🇸😁

    • @maggiemunroe1149
      @maggiemunroe1149 6 місяців тому +1

      Olá. Prices are nothing like Hawaii. Not even close. Things are more expensive here than they were 3 years ago, but it is still very affordable. Our car insurance, house insurance, car tax, etc. are less expensive than where we lived on Mainland USA. Here on Pico, the sales tax is 16% (23% on mainland Portugal), but we don’t mind. There are so many things that are less than what we paid for in US. Also, free or little cost healthcare means you won’t go bankrupt like you can in the US if you end up with something catastrophic. We love it here. We love our retired life here. And we are grateful for the fresh air, clean water, ocean views… and you can’t put a price tag on feeling safe.

    Good afternoon. I listened very carefully to the reference to the lack of diligence and professionalism of some people for whom the word given means nothing. From what I have observed in these situations there is nothing new. Whenever someone leaves His beloved Homeland for other geographies to "make a living" whenever he returns he is treated as a "foreigner". You don't understand, it's sad but it happens. And it doesn't need to happen with the "new generation" that doesn't know us, since it also happens with the old generation. Is it due to the success achieved elsewhere? It's just that making a living on someone else's land is hard, very hard. It starts with the simple fact of having to leave your own land to go somewhere else. The explanation for this may lie in "human nature" itself. In fact, there are setbacks here and there, but what is necessary is not to give up. Someone once said "a person is only defeated when they stop fighting" And life is in fact an eternal beginning and new beginning.

    • @ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552
      @ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552  6 місяців тому

      I do understand some of it, trying to learn more through our experience. At the end of the day, I believe good people are good people, no matter if they left, never left, live here or their. I know from deep in my soul that I, my parents, and most of the people in my life circle would never be part of this type of behavior. The fortunate thing is that this troubled group is small, way more good than bad in the world. At least this has been my life experience. I really appreciate your observation. Take good care!

    • @JorgeGranito
      @JorgeGranito 6 місяців тому +1

      Good morning. I did not refer to people in your family circle or the people you interact with on a daily basis, which would be extremely rude on my part and even offensive. I was referring to people who perform contract work and who are always failing, either due to procrastination or the old saying "don't put off until tomorrow what you can do the day after tomorrow"!!! or as we say in Spanish "Oh mañana; mañana" means some time in the future; later; or much later or never. About your experience of renovating a house I found it interesting, but I myself am in the business and right there in Pico I have been involved in several works, but much more voluminous and extensive. To finish and about the phrase "......way more good than bad in the world" you just have to look without paying too much attention to what is going on in the world at this exact moment to see that unfortunately it is not like that, at least in my modest opinion.@@ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552

    Boa, isso é coisa que muitos empresários fazem. É discriminação aos estrangeiros e aos imigrantes que regressam para Portugal. Muitas vezes eles levam mais dinheiro a nós do que ao povo local. Good that needs to be said, that's what many entrepreneurs do. It's discrimination against foreigners and immigrants returning to Portugal. They often also charge more money for the work if they know that you are a foreigner or a returning immigrant. Totally shameful behaviour.

    Carlos, my parents had the same problem in Terceria Island. The Works leave the jobs make excuses then go to the festivals.
    Plus, the workers stall because they think to suck up alot money from the Immigrants.
    These is what they did to my parent's summer house. With the painting and roofing and the renovations.
    They stall !!!! More time take more money immigrant dishes out.
    Keep any on on those types people business.
