most motherboards now have diodes to prevent backfeeding so its not really relevent anymore only when working on older hardware the reason this was bad is beacause spinning the fan makes it work as an alternator wich would feed alternative current to your motherboard which runs on DC and is not meant to be powered through the fan header so it might not like it

if you can recognize it in the windows thingy that manages drives (i use linux i dont remember its name lol) you should be able to at least format it and use it as a storage space for stuff like footage while editing, will also take some load off of your boot drive and speed up anything you put on it. reason why mouse and keyboard not working was because you shutdown your pc instead of rebooting it to turn it off and install new hardware
To fix disable "fast startup" in classic power options in windows, once disabled a shutdown is a shutdown not a hybrid shutdown witch is like a hibernate after logging off,, you can tell when it's on because of having lots of days uptime even thought you shutdown your pc every day (only a restart is a clean shutdown if fast startup is enabled)
Windows fast startup can cause problems with antivirus software and unstable os/random problems or no updates installing it's just not worth it been enabled and should never be enabled if your boot drive is a ssd anyway (first thing I do whenever I touch a pc is disable fast startup + some other basic things)

I know not everyone is a computer expert (sadly I'm an unemplloyed computer technician), but if your PC is older than X thing, assume it wont work, do your research before buying.
You may have a great surprise if it ends up working 😊
Also, next time if you want to boot from it (because you can't boot off PCI device on old BIOS), purchase an M.2 SATA to SATA 2.5/3.5 inches case (yes it's in inches even in Europe).

I’m usually ok when it comes to computers, but being someone who has only ever built quite cheap, and therefore usually old, computers I’d just never come across an SSD like that, and certainly didn’t know what an m.2 port is.
Definitely been a lesson to challenge my assumptions, I assumed that the photos on Amazon were just illustrative and it would be that chip in the photos but in a proper case like a hard drive and the older SSDs I’m familiar with. Stupid when looking back, but hindsight is 20/20.

I see you’ve made the classic pc upgrading blunder, don’t worry, I’ve done it way too many times considering how many computers I’ve built and upgraded.
Couple things to check: your motherboard might have a pcie passthrough mode, and that might allow you to boot off of the disk. A command line program called “DISKPART” can also see everything the disk manager can see, but it can also usually format those drives even if disk manager can’t, might be something worth checking out. You do have to be careful with it, because it can nuke your boot drive, but just make sure the drive numbers line up with the ones in disk manager and you’ll be ok.
There is also a distinction between NVME drives, which all use the m.2 port, and sata m.2 drives, as you found out. Not all boards that have m.2 ports can do both sata and nvme, so make sure you get one that does.
Additionally, if/when you do get a new board, check out some last generation parts, as you’ll get a good deal and they’re a lot more stable than the current generation ones (current gen will get better, but it’s pretty rough right now)

I was looking for a new motherboard, but I have an old CPU (intel i5-2600k if I remember correctly) and all of the motherboards that support it are also so old that they have the same problem as my current one. So basically, if I want to upgrade the motherboard, I have to upgrade the CPU too, and if I want to upgrade the CPU I will very likely have to upgrade the PSU, so to upgrade this one part I actually need to upgrade three parts. I will do it eventually once the moneys there but I’m happy with my SSD just for my games and footage for now.

If it helps, your OS can sit on your old drive, and you can use the SSD for your video storage / editing pool. You REALLY want a fast SSD for that anyway.
Separately, if you can save up the money for, I recommend getting the cheapest mac you can get. the mini is currently the winner there, and will probably get cheaper as more get refurbished. The free video editing / deck software for the mac is better than the paid software you can get for Windows. It also supports external m.2 because it uses thunderbolt, which is PCI-E over USB.

0:34 SATA is the protocol, not the plug. People just refer to the plug as the SATA.
But the m.2 connector plug can also use the SATA protocol, which is what you ended up with

    • @Xeros08
      @Xeros08 Рік тому

      NVME is the storage technology.
Normally when people say NVME they mean NVME over PCI/PCIe, but there's also NVME over SATA.
PCI and SATA are both data transfer buses, each with their respective protocols.
Diference is that SATA needs a controller (just like USB does), and PCI/PCIe connects directly (mostly, old PCs have a north bridge) to the CPU.

This was just a bit of a blind spot for me really, I’m usually alright with this kind of stuff I just got complacent. I’m mostly just waiting for the money to be able to upgrade my rig, and now I know to make sure I have an M.2 port :D
I could get a new motherboard now, but if I did that I’d need a new CPU because the motherboards that support my CPU don’t have any m.2 ports and also probably don’t support booting from PCIe. But if I got a new CPU I would likely need to get a new PSU. Basically, I’m at a bit of an impass because there’s no way to gradually upgrade at this point, i just need to save up and go for the new CPU, MoBo and PSU at once, or just get a new rig if it’s more money-efficient.
