"Is this a love song?" -- Yes. Yes it is. It's a love song dedicated to their lost brother, bassist Cliff Burton, who passed away two years earlier in a tour bus crash.
1. The slow introduction: it symbolizes the feeling of aggression and loss that the band suffers due to their loss. 2. Solo #1: represents the whole feeling of anger of Kirk Hammett. 3. The interlude (slow part of the intro): it represents the acceptance of the loss of the 3 remaining members, and the going forward in their honor. 4. Solo # 2: represents how deeply the death of Cliff Burton has affected them. 5. On the return of the heavy part, they pay tribute to Cliff by reading the poem, his last composition, and continue with the tribute doing just what Cliff would have expected of them, to move forward with the music. 6. Upon reaching the end, the song returns to the classic style of the introduction, symbolizing the memory of Cliff, which will never end. The final riff is suddenly interrupted, symbolizing the end of Cliff's life, cut short by death at such a young age.
Hey Bro, This Song Is Actually Dedicated To Thier Lost Bassist Cliff Burton, Who Died In A Bus Crash While The Whole Band Was Heading For Their Live Show In Stockholm Back In September, 1986. The Bus Was Almost Lifted In The Air But It Sadly Went Down On Him Crushing Him Again....💔💔💔💔 This Song Expresses Not Only Their Sadness But Thier Anger As Well For Losing Their Band Member And Their Older Brother (He Died Aged 24). The Intro (And The Outro) Are Specifically Dedicated To Him !💔🥺 R.I.P Cliffy (The Jimi Hendrix Of Bass Guitar) ❤️🔥🤘🏻
We love ya man ! We pulling for ya ! Im sure you been told 80 times now our boy Cliff Burton wrote this before his bus crash and ultimate death . One of THE best bass players and songwriters in metal !
Hugh Joelcock I agree with your thoughts. But according to James in a interview, he claimed it was from some poet that Cliff liked. The lyrics were written by a German poet named Paul Gerhardt according to google.
The middle part of the bass solo (emotional part) you hear is actually played and recorded by Cliff Burton (founding member and former bassist of Metallica) just before he died in the tragic car accident. And on this track, the rest of the band members whom survived from the accident decided to put this actual part into the middle of the song. Final lyrics also has been written by Cliff Burton.
This song is based on the last things Cliff worked on... His death was a tragedy that the band didn't really deal with until the next bassist Jason Newsted left the band in 2000... You can see this in the documentary Some Kind of Monster. A project that was supposed to be about making a new album, but turned out to be so much more... A lot of pain and anguish is poured into this track and it is the farewell to Cliff. The first time they played this in its entirety live was in their 30-years set of concerts in 2011. I don't think they have played it since either...
Watching you take the ride with us for the first time is priceless. How does it feel to be a fan? I got into metal mainly because of the drums and rhythm guitar combinations. Music with impact you feel is universal.
I grew up on classic rock and turned my nose up at metal as I had a preconceived perception of it. A friend had me listen to this album and I was blown away. The depth, the emotion, the deep messages, the incredibly intricate and diverse music. They really are masters of their craft.
I am from Chile-Southamerica..in small city..called Arica..when I listened to Metallica..in my first time I was 13 years old..and we don't speak in inglish..
Awesome reaction man! They always do a great job with their instrumentals. "Suicide & Redemption" from their 2008 Album "Death Magnetic" is a killer too! Greetings from Germany! Rock on!
Definitely hits hard in the feels, definitelyhart wrenching in every way😥💔, you feel every emotion in this song, its beautiful, Cliff was a genius ! Great reaction!❤ Do The Struggle Within by Metallica!
It's awesome seeing you geeking out over this. The new generation of Metal fans with zillions of metal options from all over the world more often than not don't get how huge Metallica was back in the day. It's almost impossible to explain. To people in the 80s and very early 90s Metallica was to us what KISS was to hard rock fans of the 70s. Only what KISS did showmanship wise on stage Metallica did the musical equivalent of. Kids today might think both bands overrated but in their day gods walking the Earth.
Just wanna throw it out there they got like 150 songs so there is plenty to react to i would suggest whiplash from their 1st album where it all started

Solo #2 is done by James Hetfield
This song is special to me. I listened to it on repeat when my grandma and Dad passed away. It speaks to me.

The “lyrics” are words from a poem that Cliff Burton was a fan of.
As eloquent as he was, I wholeheartedly thought they were his words.

@@MrSlowpoke-jn9lv The only part Cliff wrote was "Cannot the Kingdom of Salvation take me home?" Everything else was written by the German poet.
Jeremy Boehm I did not know that. Thanks for the info.
