Tarp Camping in the Rain - Finding Fatwood - 3 Days Bushcraft Trip

As you might have noticed I like to aim for outings where the weather change. I love that. Going out in the moment when spring arrives like it did here gives me so much to capture with the camera. I'm a sucker for contrasts.
Finding fatwood right away instead of struggling with damp wood in a pine forest. There was some leftover snow just a few days before I went out and I know from experience that exact time is the worst time in the year for making fires. People up north don't understand this. Up there fire is always easy. Because when the woods freeze over they stay frozen. And things stay dry inside throughout the cold season. But here you have rain, snow, melt, rain, snow, melt all winter...It leaves things moist to the core and after a few months of that with up and down over the freezing point fires becomes almost impossible at times. You all know the mantra you hear... "birch bark burns when wet". Where I live that don't work all of the time. In winter here I sometimes find birch bark that will not burn right away even when thrown on open flames. It's not just only the wet it depends on the level of decay etc. It can also vary from tree to tree and from one day to another. So fatwood is the one true thing you always can depend on in all seasons and weather.
One liberating thing I experience every spring is also the first hike with a smaller sleeping bag. Clears up so much room and I have always enjoyed hiking with a smaller backpack like this. Gives more freedom. Been a while since out with the LK35 and I must say... It is a fantastic backpack.
A thing about meals you cook. I have planned ambitious meals before. Made pizzas and baked bread and made sinful cheeseburgers that make you drool... but the best 2 meals I ever had in the wild was so much simpler. You never know when they happen. First one was years ago when having the canoe as a canopy over my Lavvu out on a mire. Some simple fries fried in oil and some fried beef slices in a pan. Some mayo or ketchup don't remember exactly. It was so good. And now this outing. Second night when I did the one pot pasta there... Hadn't even planned it properly. Gnocchi, tomato paste, salt, paprika powder, Onsala Korv (sausage for sandwiches) and Tabasco. It was incredible. This time I didn't even fry the sausage! And I know from experience it will not taste the same if making it again. It was that moment and everything around it.
I definitely prefer to sleep on the ground. But as I have mentioned many times before: finding flat ground is very difficult in these woods. So I always have a simple hammock with a couple of straps at the bottom of my bag just in case. This time it was actually very nice to use it in the warm sun, watching the sun set over those tree tops, over that calm mirror of a lake. And I did not record the horrible struggle all night with the sleeping pad sliding around in it. Should I?
Some really great shots I got this time that I am very pleased with. I hope you will enjoy them too! Dying to get out in my green pickle now that the lakes have cleared up. See you again soon and thanks for watching!

The yellow plastic egg container brought back my memories from decades ago: we used them on our family backpacking adventures. Having REAL eggs to cook lifts the spirits!

If the site and the tarp are properly prepared that's some good camping right there. I got hooked on it in the military. I don't care if rain isn't in the forecast, my site is prepared like it is. Better prepared and it doesn't take that long.

Why is this man simply the best what YT has to offer in bushcrafting ? Easy answer: He is real and just authentic like no other! No product placement making every video look like a tv commercial, he stick with his well approved gear and loves to use more simple things. No gear war here. He knows so well what to capture with the camera so the results are always such a pleasure to watch for us. Mr. Swedwoods, you Sir are absolutly incredible in what you do and you have well proven the test of time being a big player on here without selling yourself to the industry!
My deepest respect to you and please keep going your fantastic work!
    All the best

Not to put down this gentleman's bushcrafting by no means because he is very good at what he does but there are quite a few others out there who do excellent at this also. Perhaps you may extend your views to include others, also.

Amazing. Thanks for taking us along! Instead of the sleeping pad I take a roll of reflectics I call it. It’s like the front widow reflective shades you put up in your car to keep it cool. They sell it as an insulation. Extremely light weight.

It’s refreshing to see a realistic fatwood hunt: too often someone shows immediately finding the best trove of fatwood, seemingly without effort. My own experience mirrors yours here-you have to go through the worthless ones to find nature’s gold. Enjoyed this!

Well to be fair, I live in the south of Sweden and it's a bit harder to find as we have more leaf trees, so I do buy some fatwood online or in stores for fairly cheap and prepear it at home and put it in a small cannister I bring with me, also I buy other sort of fire starters to try out some hard waxed cotton (I think made by miltec or some german brand) it was like 8 cylindric, so for me trying out different alternatives that are cheap is fun, I think those waxed cottong things went for like 5€ or so if not less I can't remember I still have a few left.

Tried with a stove just outside my tarp setup and a heat driven fan blowing heat in to the mostly closed tarp area, temp was just above freezing and quite moist from lots of rain just before. It really was a nice feeling. Having stove in tarp covered area and I can skip the fan.

In Georgia, with all our pine trees, we refer to this wood as fat lighter. You can also find sap/resin often oozing out of the side of pine trees. Cut some off and it will give you a hot start on your fire once lit.

I was informed snd educated in the first 4 minutes of this video---all about what's good wood and what's not, for your campfire. Years ago, I lived by the Mississippi River, which is full of wood--not all of it good! Example: cottonwood is a no vote. Being by the river, the tree actually absorbes the sand! It dulls chain saw blades, almost ruins them. Cottonwood also burns like toilet paper--flash, bam, gone. We burned ALOT of Cottonwood in our stove and killed a couple of chainsaws with that sand in the wood.

Your taro will really keep you away from the elements. Where I live the wood seems good on the outside but when you open it it is soft. we call that Punky. the only way to burn it is to have a really good fire going, do not depend on it for heat, it is just some volume. We do not get much birch dead fall here, must be hardier. in the spring I look for the dead standing jack Pine. always a good burn. Thanks for the work, always enjoy.I forgot to mention the Moose and calves ( think I saw them running) I could be wrong but since I have been watching your videos, that is the first animal I have seen.
