I tried to keep a balanced argument. Rootkits are bad, GameGuard is terrible, but do we have another option for cheaters? Let me know if I got anything wrong! :)
Unsure about options for cheaters, I'm not one to really care all too much. But I do want to badly fully delete SSO and gameguard til its fixed, but I don't know how to get far enough into my files to delete GameGuard, do you know of any information to delete it fully?

I think there would be better options or more better programs but sso well they did nothing but disappoint in the last years when it came to hearing what we have to say
most anti-cheats work similarly to gg, and the company behind it is legit, so i wouldn't worry too much there. in worst case, we'll just have to sue both sse and inca for damaging our computers, but that outcome seems highly unlikely to me.
as of now, it's just very ineffective, and that can be worked on. it IS new for sso, sooo.... so far, i'll at least give it a chance. i think the most depressing thing abt this though is the fact that sso _needs_ an anti-cheat, like come on guys you're really cheating in the least profitable game to cheat on whyyyyy
Something I want to mention is that once rootkits embed themselves into your computer, you cannot permanently remove ALL of these files without potentially corrupting your operating system. While it only opens when you open your game, some files continue to stay embedded into your system, and are unable to be removed since they're buried so deep. It's incredibly serious

It took me more than 4 hours to get it off my pc. I wrote to SSO: "hey, i can't get all the Star Stable Files off my pc, the game guard is still there. I don't dare to buy any star coins for my account to play on my phone, before they are off my pc.". The responded so so fast and wanted to help so badly. So speak the wallet if you want help from them.

sure, but most anti-cheats do this now and i can GUARANTEE other online games you play also has one (if you play any- maybe you don't). for example, lots of sso players are mentioning easyanticheat (used by fortnite), and a little google search told me it runs on kernel level (aka ring 0, aka AAAAALLLLL the way in there), yet everyone doesn''t think twice about it
@@astidjewelball6885 Same here. I ran multiple cleantools - malwarebytes, Ccleaner and still fining entries and my pc wouldn't boot anymore after that. And ever since it was "deinstalled" Star stable has an immense power usage of the cpu
The red flag for me was SSO not informing the community beforehand. They announce horses and minor updates weeks/months prior, but they didnt even think mentioning GG? We literally cannot play the game anymore if we dont agree it becomes automatically installed, and they just forgot to tell us? Noooope. Did I say red flag? That is a freaking big red STOP sign right there. And the fact that they didnt post that article about GG right after the update. They only did after people started speaking up, complaining and calling it fishy.
I despise cheaters but I also feel cheated by SSO and their cryptic behavior. They talk about anti cheating- safety while making the majority feel unsafe.
Ad someone who cannot play anymore due to GG I just wish they had told us sooner so I had the time to close 8 years of the SSO chapter peacefully.
does game guard automatically download or it downloades with the sso update? The last time i played/updated sso was a week before they added gameguard, since then i havent opened the launcher. I wanna know if im fucked anyway or im fine until i open the launcher again
THIS. This right here. The SSO reaction (or lack of it) was the final nail in the coffin for me. That's not how you're treating your playerbase. They KNEW GameGuard is causing issues to many players and they did nothing to even say something like "we know there are problems, we're working on fixing them". I believe they added their poorly written excuse of a FAQ only because releasing new horses didn't help players to calm down. They think the community will let this slip by, just like another fiascos in the past. But I really hope this time will be different.
@@havidikevidi Nope you're fine! You can even update your game. Gameguard will only be installed if you click "Play". Once you click "Play" Sso will ask to make changes to your computer. If you allow it GG will automatically install and shortly after you will log online. If you dont allow it, you wont be able to play the game at all.
@@Unfortunate67 ohh, thank you! Guess i wont be playing till it solves somehow, im not risking my pc for a game i play once in a month or two when i save enough for a new horse that i ride for 5 minutes before i log off.
@@faelicious Exactly! I do believe they didn't really bother with testing it. There is just so many problems with it already. Also some people have figured out ways to get past it, which speaks volumes. GameGuard is 20 years old, I can't help but wonder what made them use it and not a more modern, more trusted anti cheat.
The FAQ they posted was so hypocritical and full of excuses indeed.
I guess we can only hope they replace it or remove it entirely, but I have a really bad feeling it is not gonna happen.

Well now I'm pissed. GameGuard did not create any problems on my laptop (as of now...) but I had no idea that so many INNOCENT players were even accused of cheating because of this mess of a system. And this damn thing can harm my computer? Hell to the no. I get that it's supposed to stop cheaters. But apparently it doesn't even work! Even today I saw multiple people use cheats to win in championships. Fix this BS, Star Stable ;-;
A little edit here, since I kinda wanted to let my feelings out, just ignore my little rant if you don't want to hear someone being melancholic lol: I'm sad this game is the way it is now. I feel some kind of genuine pain when I look at how it is now, hopefully I'm not being dramatic. I really want to move on from the game because I'm busy with other stuff and it just kinda pains me to see the game now. It's just not... Jorvik anymore. It has barely changed even after one year of protest from players... Now I'm FINALLY slowly quitting, but I'll keep my photographs and video material from this game, so I can remember some better things. And hopefully, I will find some new hope for horse games with a bunch of new games like Astride. But SSO is just... It's not what I used to love

I have already given up my account and haven't played SSO in a year. My hope is lost for the game for me its not what it used to be and will never be the same. I stopped being positive about it because my hopes have always been shattered
no, there is no need to worry. gameguard will not harm your computer

Thank you very much Rattle for bringing this to my attention and explaining the situation. They did not ask me permission to install gameguard, it was downloaded like a normal Wednesday update. After being on Star Stable for 7+ years I can honestly say it's heartbreaking to see what they have done to the game and their loyal players. I can no longer support or play Star Stable due to their recent decisions.
oh that's why my game recently crashed and my entire pc with it! The beautiful noise of BRRRR that emitted from my headphones made the experience even better! :)
10/10 would have it installed without my knowledge again

I was hoping you’d cover this topic! And I’m glad you did. I’ve been extremely worried about GameGuard and annoyingly SSO has not been able to answer my questions.
I sent several emails asking them how GameGuard exactly worked, basically how did it stop cheating, would it have to scan everything on my computer. SSO was not able to answer me. I received several copy & past responses until I finally got an actual response. SSO straight up told me they wouldn’t/ are unable to tell me how GameGuard works because they simply don’t know. Not very reassuring…

That is stupid, if you're going to add a software to your game with MILLIONS OF PLAYERS then you damn well better do your research and know what it will do to their systems. God, the stupidity of SSO is something else.
Problem is they won't tell you. They try to keep a level of secrecy to it to prevent people bypassing it (or at least as often). That's the same reason if you get banned from an online game, they won't tell you specifically what triggered the ban, because you'd be able to work around it. Of course it doesn't really *matter* much since there's still cheaters on SSO, BUT it really could be worse otherwise
I love how they won't bother hacking or game glitches that make stuff disappear but they do this.

My issue with GameGuard is not the fact that it's a rootkit, my problem is that we can't get rid of it after it's been installed... Even when we uninstall SSO, GameGuard is still there in our Services tab, ready to be run when someone wants it to.
I do cover that! Rootkit programs are nasty buggers!
You CAN remove it, you just have to find the files. (Although to remove it from your registry you have to go some steps further) Removing sso only partially deletes some of the program, and to completely delete it you have to go into sso's folder, click the gameguard folder, and delete all of the files within the folder. Afterwards, uninstall the game and then restart your pc. Edit: But please be sure to check your C:/Windows/system32, and if there is a folder called GameMon.des delete it as it is from gameguard. Edit numero dos: My bad. The gamemon.des file is actually in SysWOW64 folder. Just go to your windows folder to find the SysWOW64 one. :)
@@Eleganciaaaaaa And how can you be sure that you've deleted absolutely everything? I for instance had the npggsvc service running. That one I was certain of. But the instructions I found talked about deleting npptnt2 as well. Who knows how many more there are. The instructions also mentioned some files I personally couldn't find in the indicated folder, but maybe these files are in a different folder. I don't feel like searching in system32 for hours.
Deleting the files within the SSO folder does not delete the GameGuard service from task manager. The nProtect service was still present when SSO was deleted and every (hidden) folder with it.
Now I deleted GameMon.des from SysWOW64. That seems to have disabled the nProtect service, but I can imagine the registry entry is still there.
@@PREAmora What I said was the “basic” method. If you want to completely remove it, search it up. You first delete the gameguard folder within Star Stable Online’s own folder, then delete Star Stable Online. If I recall, gameguard doesn’t appear in your windows task manager after deleting it. When you have it, I’m certain it’s supposed to be there. If you truly want to delete it from your registry, then do it. Delete the entire gameguard folder within Star Stable Online as I said, not just the ones some sources say because that’s for when errors occur. If you got that from gameguard’s own site (which that source is old, and was dedicated to an error at the time), then it’s outdated. Of course the registry entry is still there, but deleting the folders within Star Stable Online and system32 is usually enough for most people, unless you don’t want any trace of it in your pc.
Well I'm in trouble. For some reason I thought the game guard implementation wasn't going to be for a few more weeks. I was going to get around to uninstalling SSO but it crept up on me and now I won't be able to get it out of my friend's computer. I was never asked if I wanted to install this program.
Well now I'm scared to play SSO, congratulations to the people who chose Gameguard xd I am so not going to risk a melicious software appearing when most of my uni work and projects require a good and seriously fast computer. To think that I was going to get through lack of content and ingame activities, and that's how I'm forced to let it go after so many years c': God I hope Astride gets finished quickly.
When I open sso it opened gg which I didnt know. I thought it was something new but after watching this I'm nervous about my computer now

don't be, gameguard will not harm your computer. the sso community has been making it out to sound WAY scarier than it is when in reality, gg is pretty legit. don't worry, you're fine

Unfortunately I'm one of all that people who can't even launch the game because Gameguard crashes every time we push the start button. The support team answered me three times with a copy-pasted message about the required system from their website and it's frustrating. My laptop used to run the game with high graphics and suddenly I'm not capable of enter the game? They're laughing at us.
My friends fortunately could enter the game, but they told me that sometimes the game crashes or the render is too slow...

@@moonf4iry I hope so too. But I think that insisting is the only way... I'm not feeling comfortable doing that but I think that they will ignore us if we don't do it.
What type of firewall do you have installed? Anything extra on your laptop could make gameguard crash your system.
@@sinfularrow650 the windows 10 one. I disabled it and it didn't work 😢. Also I did a clean initialization to assure that no other program could interfere with Gameguard and... Nothing.

Wait what! I had no idea about this with gameguard. I thought that sso wouldn’t risk putting players at risk of anything but I guess I was wrong. I forgot that sso only cares about money nowdays. I trusted old sso and the old owners and I guess I held on to that but now. Jesus. Thank you for sharing. I’ll have to look into this more.

I actually never got a pop-up asking for my permission to install gameguard. It's like what I said in a comment on a different video. I logged into the sso launcher like normal nothing was different, sso did it's weekly wednesday update as it always does, then after soo did it's update I saw a strange little window that was no longer than the length of my thumb started to install itself. This little window oddly popped up in the top left corner of my screen, I didn't place it there. I immediantly canceled the installation and the launcher closed itself down, because I can't play sso without letting gameguard install itself. I didn't know what gameguard was, never heard of it before and the way it just popped up in the corner of my screen like that without sso giving me a heads up was a little suspicious to me. I only hope that I canceled it in time. So far, everything is running smoothly. But I read that you are suppose to give gameguard permission to install itself or have admin controls, which neither I got. It's just went on installing itself after sso was finished updating.
I don't know if it has anything to do with where I live or what's going on, but after reading a few things I'm not sure I can trust it. Truth be told, I was actually waiting for you to make a video about this, so that I had a more clearer answer. I knew that you would make a video on it someday once you had the information you needed or just what info you could collect.
It most likely still managed to load some files.
Just go to your file controller, look up GameGuard and delete the files. On their website they have pictured for what type of file names to look out for.
After that you need to also delete them from your trash files to get rid of those files completely.
No idea if it gets rid of all of them, but I did that.
Just want to say that as a CS major - love the amount of dedication you put into learning and explaining these concepts (rootkit, kerals, etc.) Great video as always!

Hi, i am wondering, GameGuard only works if i open star stable and have it on right? so like if i am not playing sso then it won't do anything right?🧐 (i am sorry if this is questioned a bit bad, english is not my first language and i simply don’t know how to put the question better in english😅)
Not been able to play for a month now,can look at game do updates. And then when it tries to play it just stops , so fed up, miss my game and all my horses, I am a lifetime rider for years now , please take it off, so I can get back on my game,😡😡😡

I was really scared at first. An Installer popped up, I did not allowed this, got no information whatsoever from SSO before - I seriously thought that this is some malware! After that google gave me some answers and an argument that I actually liked. It was something like that:"yes the program can be a loophole and dangerous. BUT most of us don't use extremely safe passwords. Don't log out instantly everywhere when we are done, we let our PC remember passwords, we don't use very safe browsers and so on... most of us decide for our self that we want to take those risks. This is just one more. The biggest problem [the writer] see[s] is that we are can't choose on this one and that we are not enough informed about other dangers." (this is from my memory)
I personally don't like GameGuard. I dont want it on my PC and I am not that happy with SSOs decision on this one. But I still kind of see the point in the argument above.
GameGuard is an outdated rootkit. Their code is broken and really unsafe.
Not so long after SSO managed to install GameGuard on my pc(without permission tho and I'm on Windows which SSO claims needs a permission to install) I started to experience weirdest lags.. not in-game but on a desktop???? Like wtf?? My desktop suddenly wasn't responding at all.. Why I blame it on GameGuard? Because it happened right after I updated SSO with their Anti-cheat update(Which I had no clue about since there was no pop up about installing it). So then I scanned my PC whole.. Guess what? Found it in my hardware hiding as a TROJAN👁️👄👁️.
Thankfully I managed to get rid of it.
Well Now about the game itself. (Tried to play before uninstalling SSO and GameGuard)
I tried to log in. Had a GameGuard logo for a few seconds and then the game proceeds to load for 2 seconds and then POOF, no game. no error.
So yeah..
I'm really concerned about my account which I payed for. And SC that I payed for.
I basically lost my money because of this shit.
But uhm... I hope something will be done and fixed. Or else.. We(players who can't log in like me or have other problems like unnecessary errors) could pretty much sue SSO. And for many more reasons👀

Oh God, no. I HATE cheaters, I like playing games and competitive games already get under my skin enough, cheaters make me want to strangle something XD. But if it don't bug you, then that's cool :)

I've actually been very lucky and have had no issues that much of the community is having. I have an alt account on Spring Star, and my main account is in North America. For a little bit, my Spring Star account wouldn't log in properly, but it's fine. But things like my screen recorder (OBS Studio), Discord, Zoom (my club uses Zoom for voice commanding), and livestreaming have all worked together with SSO. I've not even received any notifications of "Suspected of Cheating" or other extraneous network errors/game crashes, etc. Of course, the possibility that I will EVENTUALLY have issues is still up in the air. Unfortunately some of my club members have had these issues, or are just scared of using it, which is justifiable. My biggest issue is SSO not really explaining GameGuard with enough technical information (in my opinion), nor did SSO provide ANY upfront, pre-warning in advance of using the program. I didn't even know they had tried testing it in Australia/NZ until the program had already been launched in the most recent update. I'm just a random person here...I have no knowledge of this stuff from a professional standpoint. If SSO had been more open about what their plan was for anti-cheat software, I would have been more accepting of the program, even if I would be still skeptical. The fact that their FAQ article came out AFTER the update, it's a very reactive way of handling things, rather than proactive. Some club owners have put their clubs on breaks to basically protest the program and are moving to other games to play, so great job SSO, the club community is suffocating. Anyways, thank you for your video, this does help with my personal research of the program, and I hope I don't ever have to experience what other players are going through. It really is a tough situation, but I hope we can come out of this.

My first experience with GameGuard was I received my first blue screen on a rather new laptop (though it is a few years old, it has never blue screened on me). It terrified me, as I thought that my laptop was broken and I wasn't sure I'd be able to play sso again
Same on the blue screen. I have had my PC for a few years and was so confused to find myself looking at a blue screen when trying to start the game. I can't really run it anymore and might just move on to better games at this point.
Haven't opened the game a good while and after this thing was introduced I uninstalled SSO yet again form my PC haha. According to Ginny, if you haven't logged in and updated the game after Paso release, GameGuard has not been implemented in your PC. Hope she's right

First I liked GameGuard as it would finally stop cheaters. I didn't experience more crashes, disconnects, frame drops than before (the game utilize 35% of my 7 years old GPU to maintain a constant 60 fps on max graphics, but since the engine is using only a single CPU core, when it's maxed, for example to load up a lot of players, frames are dropped - this definitely need to be fixed), it introduced some weird things. Most of the times when I log off my position isn't saved and I get back where I was after logging in. Sometimes I get rewards for races I didn't played at all that day and I got my month best time reward twice for the same race. And I still see people starting with full speed in championships - they are mostly the noobs whose can't even finish the race, but cheating is still possible. So GameGuard definitely didn't work as it should and introduced more issues than it fixed.
35% of CPU with 60 FPS? My computer is 2 years old, has just a smidge higher than lowest graphics, and takes up 80% of my CPU while running ant stays at 40-60 FPS...
Very nice coverage! I am glad you didn't just jump on to hate vagon but looked at the issue objectively.
One thing I think is weightening the reason to go with this anti-cheat is the fact that the game is kids oriented. I think the data protection regarding stuff that are targeted at kids is much more serious than the general adult stuff. so that may be why they prioritized that.
OMG THANK U. ive been terrified bcs everytime i open sso my computer freaks out, telling me that i had a trojan, or some otherr virus. it changd everytime! i emailed sso and they gave me a copy paste response of “there is no virus in gameguard.” i was so scared, thank you for clearing up that it’s just some confusion with the program!

This makes me not want to play Star Stable unless they remove Game Guard. I don’t like the fact that I have to disable my firewall to run the game because of Game Guard. Considering the fact it isn’t the best anti cheat system.

I'm a little late to the video, but could've sworn I knew right away you were gonna address this on your channel, and thank you so much for that. I've been experiencing so many issues with the game and my pc crashing since the anti-cheat got installed. And the team was nothing but shady, and not giving me a clear answer if it gets deleted if the game is uninstalled. It was my final straw, and after seven years of playing I deleted the game, wiped everything related to it. Never felt better. I'm looking forward to finishing the video, thank you for doing what you do Rattle!
I’m honestly so glad that I never had problems with this program, and it is good that there aren’t many people online even on friday nights, but it is sad that so many players have a lot of issues with it. I do wish that they had an effective way to ban cheaters. Hm.
This whole game guard situation has totally freaked me out. I recently got a new pc, and didn’t download sso for a couple days. I would do virus checks, nothing. So i then downloaded sso, and sso had recently gotten game guard. A bit after downloading sso, i noticed some issues with my pc. Not as huge but concerning. I wasn’t able to play any games on my pc but I could still use google, etc. Pc was a little slower though. Did a virus check, still nothing. After a bit, my pc is now totally unusable. I tried to fix it, using a windows tutorial. It’s totally messed up now. I can’t click anything or do any keyboard functions. I’ve got no idea what to do bc i’m a new pc owner and I wanted to be so careful to not get a virus. I don’t know if this is bc of game guard or what, but if it is i’m going to be so mad. I trusted sso to keep their players safe! I didn’t think anything of it, because sso is designed for kids-teens. I don’t know this whole situation has irked me and i don’t know if i trust sso anymore.
Ohh my thats so messed up :(( i recently got a new PC too and invested in it because i know i will be using it for work soon, and luckilly i was away when the update came so i didnt update the game. I would cry myself to death if anything happend to it Please 😭 Best of luck fixing your computer!!

When I found out about that, I went into SSOs files, and manually deleted gameguards folder. (Best suggestion I got is move all your important stuff and do a thing where you make ur pc reset to a few days prior to trying to play sso....) thatll deal with it, or dont run sso and go in ssos client files
Than when your in the files, go in game guard, select all, and use your antivirus to shred it all.
That way it is permanently dealt with, works for me fyi, Im not playing sso till they swap or get rid of it (Id rather battleeye, more trustworthy since I use it on steam)
Than run a very demanding game, netflix, youtube and several other applications to make sure your pc doesnt have game guard on it this will make ur pc possibly heat up
And if your big game is struggling while on normal settings, chances are it is hiding in the system somewheres (from what I gathered, the Client folder in Star Stable Online has GameGuard folder)
I tested this, it works for me 😬 Ill update you guys in the future....

I had no idea it was this bad. I'm glad I haven't opened the launcher since before they implemented GameGuard. Honestly, I've just accepted the fact that there are horrible people who cheat, and that my data is being constantly collected and that there is nothing I can do about it. The thing that really worries me is the vulnerability to malware. I have a lot of important things on my computer, the grand majority of which are of sentimental value and beyond that my computer is relatively new and I do not want to go out and buy another one. I've been disappointed in SSO for a while now between the money grabbing and lack of content for old players such as myself but this is the last straw. I'm not going to delete my account in the hopes that star stable one day improves but the program is definitely being uninstalled until SSO can get their shit together. I'm sad that it has come to this as it is something I have enjoyed playing since I was little. It's like losing an old friend. But safety has to come first.
me too, i’ve been playing for 7 years and i wish i could play on my pc, but i don’t trust gameguard at all and i dont want shit like that on my brand new pc :/

Thank you for speaking up about this! For me thankfully nothing really has happened ever since GG automatically got installed on my PC when I wanted to play Star Stable. I still am not sure what to think about this. I mean what if one day something would happen to my PC like maybe it would crash? Also Star Stable should've mentioned this 'Update' about GG and actually we would be able to decide if GG is allowed to be installed on our PC because it just wouldn't be fair (in my opinon). I'm not sure when they will remove it or not but if they won't I might not play Star Stable for a while on my PC. Also if Star Stable keeps GG for probably 'forever' less and less players would be able to log in and even play the game (I mean if they have a Phone and download Star Stable there they can do that i guess).
so it essentially opens the door for other malicious software to come in and make themselves a home,,, and it doesn’t even work as an anti cheat

ugh finally someone who didn't just go "gameguard is rootkit. rootkit bad!!! gameguard scary and bad!!!!!" because like. most well-known anti-cheats are ALSO rootkits. it's unfortunately just how they have to combat cheats. rootkits aren't inherently malicious, but its reputation has gotten extremely bad (and i mean, for good reason. if the rootkit IS used for malicious intent it's VERY VERY BAD). the sso community has been blowing it WAY out of proportion and has been scaring each others half to death over something that will, more likely than not, not cause any problems whatsoever.
gameguard is secure (nowadays- YES it was problematic before, but notice how most articles were from before 2010, at least give them the benefit of the doubt), the company behind it is legit, but atm it's not super effective. but i think that's because it's newly implemented and sse isn't sure what to tackle and how to fix certain issues yet. i'd say, give them some time to figure it out, it's still brand new.
oh, and about discord... it _can_ be used to cheat. some people use discord to run certain codes via overlay (or use another program disguising itself as discord). it's crazy, i know, but that possibly explains why gameguard doesn't like it (it tends to be paranoid either way lol). for me, i can still have discord running in the background, but all overlay and keybindings doesn't work when i'm in-game. i don't know if sse will fix it, considering we aren't supposed to be using social media or other chat services (sso often states we shouldn't give out personal info including social media, since sso is targeted towards minors), but i hope they do anyways

I understand that there is no such thing as completely safe internet but I got a new gaming pc for my birthday and doesn’t want this stupid root kit letting malware on it I'm deleting sso (i can still play on my laptop wich I don't really care about) but how do I get rid of the actual root kit if anyone knows a way please tell me I would really appreciate it
OBS and Bandicam won't even register the game when I try to get the recorder to connect to the sso tab. It all started right after the software was added to the game. (I think gameguard is considering my recorders as a cheat program.
I'll rather stop playing sso than let it install some shady programs, after all, I'm logging in just to buy new horse each month or so, so not much is keeping me in this game, and my lifetime won't disappear... right?

Im glad that you talked about this topic, Rattle. I used to play sso almost EVERY day, but now i just really lost my trust in sso... All they care about now is ofc money. I heard from much old players that sso isnt anymore what it used to be, events like Sint Patricks Day, Easter and much more events arent celebrated anymore. I wish i could've exeperienced those old times. Now that Gameguard has come it even made it even worse. I think most likely every player is very upset and dissiaponted, and many cant even get anymore in the game because it will crash, and im one of them. Sso truly doesn't care about the players anymore....🙁
i wasn’t once on during the time that gameguard was active (i had quit because i just didn’t like the game anymore, feeling that the creators weren’t putting in enough effort to please us) and so when i logged on, i had no idea what gameguard was and why people were talking about it in every server i went to.
DRM has also helped wiþ þe nasty reputation of rootkits. Sony included DRM þat secretly installed itself on CDs þat disabled oþer optical drives and was so difficult to remove, þe official software meant to do just þat was called into question. Before þe uninstal software was made available, Sony's response was "why are people so mad?" SecuROM and Starforce are also two DRM-related rootkits included in a number of games from þe 2000s. Starforce took a page out of Sony's playbook and denied þe issues, even going so far as to offer a $10000 reward to anyone who proved* þe issues associated wiþ þeir antipiracy.

I’ve never cheated in the game, I dont even care about finding bugs/racing bugs/ nor do I have reshade or any applications like it... it’s made my game so so so flipping laggy it’s ridiculous (I’ve just realised it could be bc I have twitch or discord)

I'm not liking the new software, because it has done, so I can't use my eye-tracking system or my VoiceAttack to play the game as I normally do. I hope they either take it away since you say it does not work against the people who cheat or find a solution. So it not going out on people who need help like me to play the game.
I think that game guard might have killed my old PC. The issues could have been unrelated, but it started pretty close to game guards addition and I do wonder if they where connected.A few weeks after it was installed I started getting constant pop ups saying that my anti virus had expired even though my antivirus was from a completely different company. They got very annoying and the pop ups started turneing into adds (including some really… inappropriate ones) as well. My computer was running really slow, and files started to just go missing. Somehow my computer got like 30 viruses installed, and what you said about root kits opening the back door for malware dose make it seem a bit suspicious that it was so soon after game guard, of course all this could have been unrelated. I loved SSO, but this is absolute bogus. Who needs an ADMIN PASSWORD to log into into a CHILD'S GAME every single time?! I never have ✨ever✨ complained about an update SSO has released, but this is not just another update. Ever since they started using "GameGaurd" my computer has been lagging more than I have ever seen before, and I just updated my graphics card 9 months ago! I am uninstalling SSO till they get this fixed and I hope this is solved soon.
Good news I guess is that sso said that this new game guard is not long term which means hopefully they will get rid of this and put a more better anti cheat system
Ah, GameGuard, my beloathed. The scourge of online games for decades. I'm surprised it still exists, it was well-known and despised since I started playing MMOs, back in the ancient days
BattlEye anti-cheat, Easy Anti-Cheat & Punkbuster:
All reputuable anti-cheat systems used by triple A companies, well known by the game industry/gamers, used in lots of BIG popular games like Battlefield. Privacy polices etc are in English and you can see what's happening to your data (this promise about keeping your data safe gets a bit muddied with Easy Anti-Cheat and Tencent however).
GameGuard:
Owned by some random S.Korean company that was relevant (received awards) nearly 15 years ago. No info aside from the wikipedia page is available in English. Used only in a few random dozen slightly popular MMOs. Known to be a poorly performing anti-cheat that's poorly coded and made. You do not have a clue what they're doing with your data or where its going. Known to be unstable with issues in S.Korea (where it's used for banking). Literally all information about this thing is like 10+ years old.
Star stable:
Hmmm. I think we'll use GameGuard.
Seriously, I've been to college for gaming and computing. I'm in uni to get a degree in games design. I watch tech/gaming youtubers all the time. I'm about as as "in" to the tech/gaming industry as you can get. I'd never heard of GameGuard until SSO pulled it out of nowhere.
What I find ABSOLUTELY hilarious, is that if you google "is gameguard anti-cheat safe" then SSO is the first response. It's LITERALLY "take our word for it! please!". Haven't opened the game since they announced this garbage.

I'm pretty sure that one anti-cheat is allowed to collect data because they say it on the website. So if someone downloads it it'd be considered the consent to have data collected. (I could also be completely wrong, as I'm from the US and don't know what is and isn't considered user consent by the GDPR.)
my biggest problem is i want to keep my pc at 100% performance at all times due to doing very heavy work on it, i’m very particular about what’s on it so going into the registry and manually pulling out the gameguard files was a bit annoying tbh
I've honestly just uninstalled the game, I don't play it enough to really want to be bothered with the risk of a bootleg "anti-cheat" software that can't even do its own job right, messing up my computer. *sigh* it's annoying, and I can.. appreciated the attempt.. but they still could have done a bit better and chose something different.
My biggest issue is that it hasn't worked to stop cheating, the reason I quit racing a few years ago and that was my favourite thing to do in the game - I haven't experienced the game crashes yet but seen so many have. A lot software used for making content no longer works with SSO, I'm not sure the trade off was worth it, I think I'd probably go back to without it because it didn't solve the original issue, maybe there is a better solution but I guess we'll see.

Well the best thing is that i cant even log in, i contact sso almost every day, the keep answering the same all the time, or dont answer at all. I see many comments under their posts about this issue and seems like the dont care. i cant log in for 3 weeks now😊
Even after deinstalling there are still empty entries in the pc registry. Also since then SSO has caused a major damage at a point to my computer that resolved in a boot section error- no joke! And was is their response after writing to support? - "please check the graphic settings in the game options" - I could shit a brick!!
Well at least they removed it now. I guess they may have listened to us :)
I would never have installed gameguard myself, but cause sso just downloaded it for me i am now stuck with gameguard on my pc
i had installed SSO for many month but after that video i uninstalled that game and i hope nothing bad happened to my computer for those month :(

For some reason I thought the game guard implementation was going to be a few weeks down the road. When my game crashed five times on the launcher, I should have given up. But I persisted and when my game started up I just saw the game guard logo right there. My game runs at around 5 or 10 frames per second now. It looks like a slideshow. If I uninstall SSO would that uninstall the anticheat?
Most likely - no. You would have to do some deep cleaning of your register as well, sadly.

@@faelicious it is entirely my fault for not changing my password. My brother updated sso for me because he wanted to compare our framerates to see where the issue lies. It also took up 95 GB of hard drive partition C leaving me with only 5 GB of space... unistalling sso did nothing
I haven’t been playing sso since they introduced this anti cheat and after watching this video and learning the risks from game guard, I was wondering if I have sso installed on my pc but I haven’t opened the game since the anti cheat, would my computer still be affected by the software? I’m really nervous that my pc could be at risk. If someone could answer this that would be amazing ❤️
They have since removed GameGuard after 3 weeks due to the issues that GameGuard was causing. They are still looking into anti cheat software, but are being a lot more careful with what programs they use
GameGuard was a mess back in 2006 or so when I first started playing MMORPGs, I can't believe it's still around and still just as much of a mess 💀
I think gameguard broke my laptop. My laptop started breaking around mayish time which is weird because my laptop was completely fine before star stable did this. During this time I was in a club and I didn’t have my security on at the time because of reasons but then my laptop started becoming slow, like really slow and which soon around end of may, my laptop went straight onto recovery mode and to this day, my laptop is broken, it’s slow and as well keeps going on recovering mode after a while and during this time, it will say my driver is broke which is confusing as I didn’t do anything with it.
I will probs have to get a new laptop for my work as I don’t want to lose any but I can’t do nothing about my old laptop then keep doing recovery mode almost every week.
Star stable probs broke my laptop and I am really upset about it. I lost my minecraft worlds, sims 4 worlds, rival star save and as well I can’t do nothing about it.
I am upset that star stable didn’t do the background check on this company before it broke my laptop. Shame on you star stable, shame on you.

Elden Ring is full of cheaters, but it doesn't stop it from being a good game! Wish I could say the same for SSO.
Well I'm glad I haven't opened the game since the Paso update, I installed the most recent Haflinger update, but I definitely won't be logging in, even for the Rainbow Festival, nor will I spend money on Star Coins to bring my App horses into a game that could put my personal computer with all my personal information at such a high risk. As long as GameGuard is linked to Star Stable, I'll be spending my time on Red Dead. At least Rockstar is transparent about not caring about their community and their privacy and safety online.

Yeah, so turns out that SSO was crashing my ipad, specifically after opening the Ecosia browser everything would freeze for a few minutes and then just crash. It's a fairly new ipad. Ecosia works normally only after SSO's uninstall.

I was "suspected" for cheating because I slowed down to pick up a recyclable while doing a race, after picking up the recyclable I started to push the up arrow key on my keyboard to get going fast to get to the check point but was kicked out for cheating.
I don't even know how to cheat the game, I know a few short cuts in races but I don't cheat.
It kept downloading into my hard drive, which eventually probably would've ruined it so I had to quit the game altogether.
My pc always aks if sso is alowed too change my pc after it got game guard
i personally didn't have any issues with the game when the gameguard was enabled, but they still should have been more cautious with this.

something that bothers me is that i can no longer record videos using game capture, I've played other games that also have anti cheats and I'm still able to use game capture.

Mine stopped me from playing just today but I fixed it by turning off my firewall because I couldn't find nprotect to allow access to the firewall
It freaks me out a little that some users need to put off their firewall. That is protection against viruses on your PC.

At the end of the day it's your choice. GameGuard is a rootkit and it now comes packaged with SSO to keep cheaters out. If you feel like you can trust the company then keep playing, but the rootkit is a dodgy thing to have. At the exact same time many people have installed rootkit anti-cheats and have seen no problems. So, really it's up to you. Personally, if you I loved the game to death, and it isn't causing isses on my PC, I'd keep it and continue playing. Despite being a bad rootkit, Gameguard has no history of installing malicious software.

As someone who is absolutely terrified of being hacked/ having invasing Softwares on my laptop, these news are horrible. SSO is giving me more and more reasons to stop playing...
It's interesting to me that something like EAC, and BattlEye, and a handful more of anti cheats were available, but they went with a kernel level Anti-Cheat that is very prone to crashing and blocking things by mistake. Don't get me wrong, the aforementioned anticheats do have their issues, but at *least* their false positive issues aren't as present
I can't get into the game ever since that update. Everything simply immediately closes after the GameGuard logo appears. Support has been asking me to stay patient. Wondering how many weeks I'm supposed to wait until I can access a game I paid for again 🤡.

What type of firewall do you have? Anything extra junk on your pc could make gameguard crash your game.
