SSO-OPINION: February blog post: can they fix their engine?

- Just a brief thought on their February blog post - in particular the changes they are making to the engine. But is there hope for an engine in this state?
NOTE: I am no expert on coding, these are my laymen thoughts on an engine I've never seen.

The game has been out for a decade and I've played it sense day one, it needs an overhaul. All games eventually need to have it done, the problem is SSO is not a big enough company to prioritize it while continuing to stay afloat but the longer they avoid reworking the engine the harder its going to be to put it back together.
•My best suggestion is that they shut down the servers for matinee for a few months BEFORE summer break hits and kids are out of school. Everyone would be unable to play but there would be some kind of ensentive or reward after the rework is done for players already registered (free horse, starcoins, SOMETHING that would incentives a few months wait time. Instead of people being angry at the game being down, they can look forward and be excited for the reward when it's up and running again.)
•My other idea is that they try to release a client and "freeze" everything on your account to a single player. Every time you log out it will reset to what it was frozen as.. though it could get boring its not locking anyone out of the game for the meantime until they get their shit together. I don't know anything about coding so I'm not even sure this is possible or realistic.
•My last idea is to announce that StarStable will no longer be updated after 2022, this would probably not be profitable but would give SSO time to patch up the engine to the best of their ability while giving out a notice. Servers would stay online but there would be no more development. All games stop being updated eventually, and due to the deterioration of the game and lack of fixing there might not be a way to fix it.
TLDR: If they don't rip the bandaid off and fix this soon its going to be impossible to deal with it in the future. Everyone can see the company is already in shambles and its going to continue to deteriorate, and we all know Xbox won't be buying SSO like they did with Activision Blizzard.

@@Emily_Bondevik_Official Why would they buy such a niche genre of game though? I really doubt, even if they do buy SSO, it'll probably get sunsetted eventually as EA is notorious for many, MANY pay 2 win features.

Honestly, the fact that they even used an outdated engine all those Years ago shows how much of a cashgrab the game had always been. But never in my Years of playing this game, have i encountered so many game breaking Bugs. One of the worst ones has to be the valedale Alex prison thing. I don't know if they fixed it, but there's a very high chance that your game just won't load in after you exit, even though the quest is a part of the main storyline. I don't mind the little stuff like textures glitching, it happens in every game, but that's a little too far. Most mature players would 100% not mind having no updates for a couple weeks if it means there is a new engine in development. I don't thing SSO will survive another 10 years, but fixing their engine is the very start. Even if they do fix it, the game still has huge problems with its identity, not knowing such Basic stuff like how the center of the main plot even arrived there. The game needs more work than that, but just making up new stuff like the dark riders really isn't the way to go.
A well reasoned, balanced discussion about possible causes & future plans, voiced clearly & concisely, and supported by interesting graphics, smooth transitions, and entertaining video background action. In short, what we've come to expect on the Rattle channel. Nicely done!

I said this since 2017-2019. Sso needs to update once a month or stop the servers FOR ABIT. They can even add new quest or horses after the re-start-up. The older players like me KNEW this was gonna happen.
Honestly idc if it takes them a while to fix their engine, even if we don’t have any content I just want them to solve the issues at hand. I am willing to wait. I didn’t spend over $100 AUD on a game for nothing

I took a decent break from sso, checking in for maybe five minutes every couple months. i’ve had more time in my schedule and so i’ve decided to log in and see the changes they’ve made for myself. i noticed almost four different glitches maybe ten minutes into playing? i also freeze with no way out except restarting every 15 minutes or so. idk if that’s related but i stupidly expected to come back to the game and see improvements… i didn’t 😐

From what I understand/understood SSO built their own engine. Remember World of Warcraft redid their entire engine too. Updated little things that didn't seem that grand to us as players.
The engine SSO uses simply isn't capable of doing the things it's being asked to do. It. Is. Too. Old. It was never able to. Same way The Sims 3 has a hard limit for how many processes it can run at once. Same way you can't just chuck cloth physics into a game that didn't formerly have them without installing something entirely new to run them that taxes the system (Skyrim).
I think their problems show a lot in how nothing ever seems to be linked.
Example: They have to go back and fix each and every quest and model and texture one at a time by hand. This is hard proof (to me) that their system isn't linked together and that they do not use the same models and rigging for each quest which I'm sure creates some kind of massive code bloat when they're making something new every time and not just pulling the old stuff to a new location. (Riders riding sideways on your horse in older quests, old horses and riders needing to be hand replaced and re-rigged)
Whereas in newer games, if they switch out a model it generally switches the model of *anything and everything using that ID to that new model*. See what I mean?
And they've also spectacularly screwed themselves by not simply updating old horses to newer models, or encouraging people to sell the old ones so they can eradicate them. People have every right to feel cheated if the MMO just wipes out their 20 USD horse even if it does say in the ToS they can do that.
I'm kinda rambling, but I have seen game devs in the past refuse to add certain features to a game because the engine simply can't do it (or can't do it reliably). Adobe Flash doesn't do cloth physics in the same way UE5 can and all that. And if they rebuilt it completely it would initially break way more than it would fix. Always does. Big mess. They aren't going to risk their foray into Mobile Gaming like that. Not when there's billions of dollars riding on being the first not-total-shit Action/RPG mobile horse game.
(EDIT) I also wanted to tack on that they don't have to shut down the servers at all to do this kind of an update. They have testing servers and an Alpha/Admin server somewhere. What I'm saying is they could make a whole new system and just import it when it's done. (I mention this because a good chunk of the comments seem to think it'll effect/Affect? the game we actually play) They don't test new updates on their live servers, they just pre-load the data for some reason and their poor security measures let us get into the files to see what they added.
I'll be happy the day I can actually ride next to my friend and we both see each other riding together and not miles apart
I would totally be ok with the game being down for even three months for a reset.
Part of me wants to try and learn how to make games/models just to see if I could do better (even if it doesn't release and it's just something I mess with in free time or smth) - I *highly* doubt I could, but ya never know I guess
Many games are started by people who see a problem and wish to right it. You won't know if you don't give it a try! Maybe start with Unity? It's a free engine you can get some tutorial online :) ♥
You can always try, just remember, don't do it out of spite or will to be better than sso, it will only cause a downfall and stop your creativity. Many horse games were trying too hard to be sso, or for example Yandere Simulator fangames; they were a curse, trying to make yandere simulator before Yandere Dev. They fall fell due to drama, so please if you too wanna make a horse game, make it your own, don't try copying sso, we need more multiplayer horse games that are storyline mmo's and not things like rival stars. We need something like sso once was, and one day I want to do it, I'm hoping to soon work on my personal project with my original characters and storyline, but I'm not sure if I will be able to do it

Excellent analysis. Honestly I feel like they need to shut it down to fix their engine or just get an entirely new engine because I feel like one day they’re gonna try to shove in an update that will either make the game unplayable, the game doesn’t open, the servers fall apart, etc. the ember mane was supposed to be an app only horse for that mistfall wannabe anime yet for someone reason they just kept it there. With trying to remove old assets aka the old gen 1s it makes me wonder if the first early sign of trying to do that to “improve game performance” was when they took out the gen 1 fjords, which if so means that their engine must’ve fell apart in the last year of the golden age (2011-2017) of SSO, 2017. When I tried that iPhone version even that experienced a lot crashing with game errors and bugs which makes me think it’s gonna slow transition to PC where people just crash straight up ever certain amount of time due to the state of game’s tech debt. Their choice to neglect it reminds of the yandere dev situation where it was spaghetti code that further affected the game with the refusal to switch or get help. So to relate this to SSO, I feel like their code also may have junctions that started causing the main issues and instead of fixing it they went around it. It just makes me sad that they just chose to go towards light updates instead of actually trying to fix their engine or get a new engine. I love this game, but I feel like one day it’s gonna be breaking to the point where people that don’t experience bugs finally start getting bugs
I experience the invisible player bug far too often now it's getting in my nerves. About every 1 in 5 times I log on I can't speak in chat and there is no one in the world. I'm very relieved I haven't experienced the missing horses and items, because I bought a horse the other day and it made me really nervous

Ever since they added mobile support in America and Canada, I have been experiencing major frame rate drops when ever I move my character.
I went from having 128 fps to 10.
I hope this isn't a me problem but I also hope that this isn't a game problem
It's not likely it's you. SSO has this problem with their PC game as well for some people and a lot of bugs as well. I have a gaming set and NEVER have issues with games...all except for SSO. SSO is literally the only game that struggles with running on my computer.

I witnessed countless bugs recently, revolving players. I seen the dismount-dance bug as well, and then I see the weirdest bug today. I seen someone dancing…..upside down…. 😭
The 'removal' of old appies and akhal tekes is nothing more than cash grab in my opinion. I believe so due to two reasons. There's plenty of old players (me included) who like to collect the old models, mostly due to nostalgia. The old appy/teke is going to become a 'prestigious' horse, because it will no longer be buyable, therefore all people who care about that are going to jump on the train and get them while they can.
The second reason, the 'tech' reason I believe it does not really make sense. There's 50ish horses with the same body model as this old appy/teke, so only making 4 out of 50 colors unbuyable still leaves plenty possible to get. Even if I can't get these 4 colors, I still can get the rest. These horses aren't going to be *removed* from the game, they will stay in the game files because playes who already own them are still going to have them in their home stable and be able to ride them around. Removing-removing them would imply taking away someone's horse and I don't really see SSO team replacing them with the new ones.
Also, this model has been already updated once, they say it's gen 1.5 but it is old starter head with lipizzaner body. They have plenty of older models, like gen 1 Arabian, gen 1 Tinker etc. who are mysteriously not a problem? If the 1.5 model is a problem they should remove/replace (with the new starter body) all of them or just admit they are after money
no, because even if theyre in the game files, theyre still being removed as an entity that allows for requests from the client side, therefore lessening activity and making less room for errors to occur.
People are still going to be riding these horse models around, less often yes, but they are still going to be in game
I love the way you do your videos, they're just perfect. I've been watching them for long time now and each time you bring something new about SSO, I always find them remarkable. You write how a true essay should be written with a point, evidence, explanation and a link. You explain how it effects the way of the game and it's players, a long with keeping the argument balanced and reasonable. Star stable is a game I've loved since I was 10, I am now 17 and will be 18 this year - it saddens me how the "love" of the game has died out. It no longer feels like the company cares about it's players, not like before when they used to interact and take in our ideas, as well as give out more codes. It's clear the servers have a problem, I can only hope they fix them soon as I really want this game to improve and have less bugs and glitches.
With how many bugs there are, I'm afraid that my generation 1 horses might become bugged and I won't be able to ride them properly anymore. I want to collect most of them since I really like the old horses, but SSO has said that they won't be supported for bug fixes after they're removed so it's a bit risky to buy a lot of them. I just hope my star coins won't be wasted, haha.
Well… we have nothing exciting to do in this game right now. So a month or two time with no new content? I wouldn’t notice the difference. If it means the game will become a better Star Stable, i would actually be happy for it.

idk if it just me but sometimes when im doing the race in starshine ranch and i x out of it it kicks me out of the game💀 and the trakehners are even more broken the front leg is literally dislocated

Rattle, I love your channel. Watching your video, I remembered a live I did last Friday, I entered the game to feed my horses and everything was broken. Guillermo Gadea was headless, no windows worked, chat, pick up, nothing at all. New Hillcrest literally disappeared from the map, the car wheels were gone and the horses were moonwalking. If you want to get some bug material for your videos feel free, I've never seen so many bugs at once.

I think I did talk about their engine at some point before in another video in the comments, but I guess this sort of confirms on what I was thinking (their engine being unable to keep up and they may need a total "reset" by using a new engine totally or going through a serious update. I don't think they can update an engine so out of date though). I do understand that in order for them to use a new engine they will need to remake the game, but it's better than what we have now. SSO will not be able to stand in the future with how out of date it already is.
I think that School of Dragons is an excellent example of what happens when a game's engine can no longer take updates and what happens to it. The only reason it's barely alive rn is because there aren't any other MMO How to Train Your Dragon games.
I'm wondering, is it best to just stop logging on, buying/selling things, doing quests, or doing anything interactive at all for a few months? Would pretty much logging onto the game increase the risk of something happening to my account? Wonderful video as always, I have been a subscriber for a long time now!
This is what the entire SSO community has been trying to say for the last couple of years. The engine that runs SSO is failing, and slowly crumbling apart every day. It doesn't help that they recently released mobile. That only made the engine strain more, as a flood of new and old players made their way into the game. This is why I've kinda quit playing. I know they won't fix it until it finally gives out and the servers crash down on themselves. When a company gets too money focused, there's no going back. They've lost track of what the game was really about. Magic and a sisterhood. Not only that, but bringing joy to young girls and boys across the world. It's sad that it has to be this way, and I wish it wasn't.
On a better note, there are many new horse games coming for 2022! After SSO gets some competition, and a drop in numbers, they might kick things into high gear and try to fix their game. Or, they will just dig their own grave by trying to get more content, and kill their own game. Either way, with SSO here or not, we'll have lots of new horse games that'll be just as good or better! There's lots to look forward to in the coming months!
This may not be the case but I've been wondering, do you think start stable's recent incident with the accidental release of the Paso Fino horse may have had something to do with the outdated engine? Or do you think its just an employee mistake?
Tech Debt certainly means "it ain't easy" - and no software project that's in any way alive will go without it. It usually happens when you either have inexperienced programmers and no good review of the code, or when your project management inisits you finish something sooner, forcing you to cut corners and producing sloppy/incolplete code. But smart project managers always allow a good chunk of development time to remove tech debt. Looks to me like SSO has been failing to do that for years and years.
I had it soooo many times were my internet was fine but that didn't stop the game from crashing and in very crowed areas such as Steve farm the horse models of other riders would be grey before losing completely and the connection is much slower because well the game has more players and the old engine probably can't handle that. ( Sorry for any spelling mistakes English is not my first language XD)
i like the monthly blog and sso actually communicating with us ish but sso needs to stop with the star coin and star rider discounts and all these horses. the horses that have be added lately suck (my opinion) love your videos Rattle :))

I just wanted to say.. I wanted to replay the story, because I was super bored on my previous account where I have nothing to do anymore. And in the very beginning there is a quest where you are introduced to Sabine, at the Vineyard. And it looks absolutely incohesive, when there's the old, old model of Sabine, and the fancy new updated Baroness. It's like one of them got pasted into sso from a different game xd
Reminds me a bit of what The Isle had to do, they completely abandoned their Legacy branch (stopped fixing bugs, updating etc) and started a completely new one (Evrima) because Legacy is just a tangled mess of codes that they cannot fix. Maybe starting over would fix it but it'd be a lot of work and all servers would need to be taken down for a long time...
not to sound pessimistic or anything, but if sse doesn't consider porting their game to an entirely new engine in the future, it's soon gonna be unplayable
Rn what noticed is that all the new and better games than SSO are coming and SSO is finally giving us more and fun updates...just when all the other horse game are coming out and it seams like their bring out better updates too(in my opinion)
I get this bug a lot where my screen will turn light blue (as if you blended the sky + clouds together in an art programme) and not stop until i dismount and spin my camera around. It's weird.
I honestly think SSO had procrastinated so much on fixing the servers they’re completely unfixable. I believe the only way to save the game is save all the assets as possible, and shutting down the game altogether for some months and re-do *everything* about the game. They need to do something from scratch to update the servers and get their game actually working for once. Unfortunately it’s almost guaranteed SSO won’t do this, it means less profit, players leaving and months worth of updates (profit) won’t be there. If they were to do this, they should add some huge reward for players.

Watching this vid a little later, but honestly? We warned them. And so did their employees. And they ignored every warning. It's sad to watch my childhood game fall apart.

dont know why sso doesnt do what other mmos do and shuts servers down for maintenance at least at night or a day every so often. almost all online games i played have server maintenances every couple of months or so. theyre probably too far gone to use this approach though and short breaks might not be enough but its imo a good compromise. though i speculate as i dont know about technical side of all of this
The buggiest place i have been in is starshine ranch, the competitions there just break for me almost everyday. When i did the Lisa quest i got maybe 3 bugs. With the art direction, i like the new textures but man i hate the overly green grass everywhere. Figrove, fort pinta, the whole main island has the same grass. If i did not have a map i could not tell u what forest i am in, to me it feels very lazy. Just like the rest of the game.

I agree with most of this, but I have a hard time believing that is really so drastic. I love SSO and yeah there are problems, but I want to enjoy the game and not protest about it. If only star stable would LISTEN to their players! Aren't we the whole reason they can function in the first place? If they would listen to us, bugs would be fixed quicker, players would be more satisfied with the updates, We could tell them that we want the Friesian animations and gates to be less chaotic, and they could change them! They've done it before haven't they? With the trakheners or thoroughbreds or something... OH WAIT, they had everyone buy those breeds, and there were no problems with the gaits and then they re-did them without warning.
I say they shut down the servers to properly fix the engine. But we all know Sso would never do that cause then they couldn’t sell horses
If they would just shut down the servers and start from scratch, the game wouldn't constantly shut down, keeping the players from joining and they wouldn't lose more money. Just saying.

okay, what i think would be really nice is if they went back to their old sso ways and released horses more spread apart. it isn't meaningful anymore getting a new horse added/updated, it's just an on-going process
Star stable is turning into such a buggy/broken game I wasn't even aware of half these issues because I haven't logged on since last year I actually just deleted star stable from my desktop a few minutes ago because I moved onto a different game entirely I don't know when or if I'll download it again because it's turning into a mess right infront of our eyes all because devs were too lazy to fix issues that they swept under the rug only for those same issues to come back and bite them where it hurts.....their wallets lmao.
I feel like sso is just delaying the inevitable because they wanna make money as quickly as possible but they don't consider actually taking the time to fix these issues and realize you'd have to sacrifice a little money now and have big bucks later whoever is the head of the SSO team clearly isn't thinking things through logically.

if starstable ever locked down on the game to fix the engine I 100% guarantee you that most players would be overjoyed and could care less about content if it meant sso fixing their game. ALL THEY WOULD HAVE TO DO is be TRANSPARENT

I have sent in many emails to sso ,idea to not give us as many large updates or no updates at all but they take there time on working on the game issues so can you just give them the benefit of the doubt you have no clue so let them have time ok it doesn't matter anyway its not up to you or me its was there dream to begin with isn't it so stop having a cow relax. take aload off.
All I want is for SSO to shut down their servers for a few days or even a week so they can fix their game! It's so annoying getting on and not being able to play properly because of these bugs, it really is just not fair. You pay, $100 for what? A buggy ass game. Saddening.

Unfortunately i think that a week is far too optimistic, it would likely take much longer to fix the mess that might be hidden in the coding and stabilizing everything the proper way.
I absolutely agree though, it would be way better if they went about shutting the game down for a bit to actually take care of these issues instead of glossing it over, assuming that they aren't already working on it.

Not necessarily, data is data and as long as it isn't corrupted it could still, in theory, be transferred to a cleaner engine. So no, players won't lose everything if SSO does it efficiently.
It's a over a year later and no, the game performance or stablity has not improved much.
And people are still defending SSO saying we need to be softer on them... I'm sorry but it's time that we face reality. The bugs have been SO bad these past 2/3 years and it's like SSO is way too lazy to fix them. Honestly, I think that if SSO had fixed them earlier, it wouldn't have been like this. I'm tired of seeing people defend SSO like nothing is happening, this is SERIOUS, the game is falling apart and if SSO doesn't fix it, I bet this would be the end of SSO.

I can't, i laughed so hard when you said "You can easily remove Embermane sso, just saying" proceeds to be TRIGGERED. xD i can't it was so funny and i agree. When the embermane came to sso they said it would be a limited time only like spirit and then they would remove it from the game. However it has been almost 2 years and the embermane is still there... :'D I can't it's hilarious...
What however comes to the glicthes and bugs, i have a big one... When i log in sso, i can't move, i can't click stuff and basically my horse just stands there and does not move. When i contacted sso about it they said (not in word to word, but you get the point) "This might be your fault, but could you please send us a few pictures so we know how to look for a problem?" When i did that i got an answer back few days later saying "other players have experienced this too and we are working on it" i was glad it was an actual person who answered me, however it has almost been 2 weeks now and i still can't play sso, or can i...? The thing is, i have a non starrider account and this person who i sometimes hang out with came over to my house, they are a starrider, i asked them if they could try to play sso on meh computer to see if it really was my computer where the problem lied... Turns out, she could play, smoothly even, since i have a gaming computer, so the problem is not my computer, it is that i am a non star rider and sso could not care less if i can play the game or not. Yes coding is hard, i get that, however it has been 2 weeks and i still can't move...
On the other note, i really think sso should shut down their game for a while, FIX IT and then open up the servers again, because at this point there is too many bugs and glitches and soon, the game will start crashing more and more and the main thing, will overheat, which will lead to the game just not opening anymore to anyone. I know there are some people who already have this issue, proves that this game is crashing badly and soon, sso will have thousands maybe even millions of messages people raging at their company that they can't play sso. It's only the matter of time... Let's count together how long it takes for sso to crash completely... Let's do it together, it will be more fun and then we can say to sso "we told you so". :3

I would never support you all you do is bash others you don't work for sso so how is it you bash them for their dream if you don't like the game stay away
