- A short rattle with a cold start on a Honda Accord Earth Dreams engine (2013-2017) likely comes from a bad cam chain tensioner. This is how to replace it.
Performed this service on my 2015 CRV EXL. No longer hear the rattle. No need to replace the VTC actuator as Mr Tucker mentioned in previous comments. Thankyou so much for making this video. It was of great help ;)
My scary experience: I accidentally had the filter screen fall into the oil pan. Luckily we could get this out with help of a pick up tool. I would recommend a new DIYer like me doing this to place a flat head screwdriver or something that would prevent that screen from falling. The filter screen does not snap on the back of a tensioner. So there are chances of it fallling accidentally into the oil pan while you are trying to install the new tensioner . I hope this helps. Overall the installation process wasn't that complex. Just Be careful you drop the bolt or filter screen into the pan ;)
I took it to the Honda dealer . The service manager gave me a quote ranging from CAD 750- 1500. On asking if there were any TSB on this issue, he denied. I have lost faith in dealerships considering that the service managers are always pushing you to spend more to increase their commission.
@@martian2030 You should have shown the service advisor a copy of the TSB from Honda as it specifies 0.6hrs to install the Cam chain tensioner. My Honda dealer quoted US$160 for the job.
how are they holding up? i assume you purchased the oem genuine honda tensioner? could you show me to the right direction for that oem part
Hello sir I have a question for you the cover looks really close to the pulley was it a pain to remove and ti reinstall for sealing I also have the occasional rattle at startup on my 2015 crv ex .I stopped at that point secondgessing myself if I can't revealing properly thanks for your reply Jean.f pelletier
I like your video because what has one got to lose by simply replacing the tensioner first. Beyond some time, the answer is nothing. And, perhaps a HUGE savings as compared to replacing VTC actuator. I got a 2015 Accord with only 42k miles, and very rarely on a cold morning very short rattle, .5-1 sec max. But to this point it happens very rarely, so I'm going to watch it. Worked like a charm in my 2013 Lx-s. Not only the rattle is gone but definitely the engine is quieter. Found Cloyes brand. Hope it is as good as the oem. Thanks a lot!
I found Clowes as well. Doing mine as well. If I ever do the entire chain I'll use their kit.

This is great. I might actually do this fix. I have a 2013 LX-S with 130,000 miles. It's been doing this since around 60,000. Everything read previously said that it was VTC actuator and it would just come back again.
So is it something serious that I would need to replace now? My 16’ CRV is having a slight rattle at cold starts but I don’t have the funds to replace it right now. It’s at 55k miles but I should be fine right?
@@pasidudissanayaka1843yes replace it now, the longer you wait the more damage it can cause, the chain will stretch and guides will go bad

@@kennyj4468I have the 2013 v6 A/T accord coupe. The ticking sound is similar to when a car is low on oil I only hear it when the car is warmed up and parked or low speeds. I dont notice it on the highway. From what I've seen it's either a bad timing belt tensioner, or possibly the water pump, they are both located in the same spot, mine is at 100k miles so I need to replace the tensioner belt anyways, manual says to change the belt every 8 years or 105k miles. For the 2013 j35y the tensioner is a little more let's say fun to get to 😅. Not bad but you have to remove your serpentine belt, and taking power steering pulley off helps with working room. Then you have to take the front passenger motor mount bracket off, which let's you take the covers off your timing belt assembly. once it's open the pump, tensioner, pullies, sprockets, ect. Are already to access. I'll let you know if it fixes the problem. Since I'm already going to be in there I'm replacing the water pump, timing belt, tensioner, and pullies, and the heat sensor so I wont know exactly what fixed it if it goes away. Theres a kit with everything except the heat sensor from AISIN for $200, its worth just replacing everything if you go through the trouble of cracking her open, I dont expect the whole job to take more than a few hours

I need this done, and will probably attempt it myself. But out of curiosity, I trudged over to the nearest Honda Stealership to price it out.
Just the tensioner R&R, although they tried to stack on other parts...VTC actuator, timing chain, etc.etc.etc.
I figure even a newbie like me can do this in 2 hours, at the most.
I was quoted $660.00 .
I laughed in their faces.
They were claiming 3.5 hours of labor, and keep in mind that's for a "professional" Honda mechanic.
I told them that was outrageous. The part, even if Honda OEM, is about 120 bucks. The only other expense, besides labor, is a little bit of Honda bond.
Tbis should cost no more than $300.00 for a stealersbip to do, it's amazing how they can tell you the price with a straight face.

I notice you're using Honda Bond 4. They make the Honda Bond HT. I assume HT stands for High Temp??? Does it matter which Honda Bond you use?

Classic timing actuator sound. Likely not the tensioner.
It's the spring inside the actuator, but the tensioner DOES play a role in the rattle and does need replacement regardless. It's a commonly failed part.
My Honda Accord 2015 sport had rattle in the morning. Replaced tensioner as on video and rattle stop. Follow Honda service bulletin 19-019.
That rattle is normally the spring within the vvti actuator. Safer to change the whole thing. Also, if the rattle has been going on for a while, likely the chain guides may be showing signs of wear. I just changed the whole thing... It´s not that hard to do if you know your way around a wrench
I ordered a spring kit and replaced it on mine it solved the noisy cold startup problem, they recommend changing the tensioner as well which I plan on doing this weekend.
Did this on my 2015 Accord. Replaced the tensioner, it was silent for a month and then it came back.

Replace the VTC actuator spring with the $35 R44 R5A 5A2 kit. Takes about an hour.

I noticed that the TSB you reference weirdly does not include the 2013MY Honda Accord's even though that is the new part number for the 2013 model year. I was able to find a slightly older TSB (14-030) that does include 2013 but references the old part number. I'm definitely gonna do this fix on my 2013 Accord with the new part.
I also agree with the statement that the VTC actuator isn't likely the problem. It definitely was on my 2010 Accord and for many other Honda vehicles, but does not appear to have affected the 2013-2019 Accords. Honda clearly decided to mix things up and make something else defective.

I'm realizing now at a terribly inconvenient time (as I'm trying to do the repair) that it's likely none of the 2013MY had the filter at all and Honda probably assumed adding that filter fixed it, I guess? Either way, I'm now overnighting this part that costs $90 for some reason 😂
Will be doing this on my wife's 13 accord EX-L. Not sure why it wasn't included in thr 19 TSB, but it's exactly same parts as are in the '14 so would have the same problem. From what I've read on accord forums 13s and some early 14's didn't have a filter on the CCT.
Inhavwnt opened mine up yet to check, but ended up scooping one up along with the new tentioner. The filter is nearly twice the cost of the tentioner 😂.

Your VTC actuator spring is worn and needs to be replaced with an OEM style 5A2 VTC Actuator spring.
370,000 miles? That's the most I've ever heard of!

So here's the literal thousand dollar question: Does this require a maintenance visit to an auto shop that may also require a timing chain replacement (another $850)? If this is the exact same sound and duration of said sound i hear on FIRST startup, is it worth $1000 just to see?
this wont cost you $1000 to replace. dont go to the honda dealership to get repairs done unless youre under warranty

That's not the chain tensioner issue , it's a intake cam vtc phaser , also a tsb for most k24 's .

It can actually be either or , I have worked on these 9th gen accords and sometimes it can be the Vtc and other times it’s the timing chain tensioner.

Quick question Mr Tucker, when i remove the old cam chain tensioner, do i need to place and sort of "tension" to the chain so it doesnt slack/sag off? or am I safe if i remove the old one carefully and install the new one carefully, as long as I dont mess with any of the "Tension" on the chain upon removal(of the old tensioner) and installion (of the new one)??
im just worried that I may jump the chain unintentionally while replacing the cam chain tensioner
I didn’t worry about the chain. Simply pulled the old one off and replaced it with the new one.
@@tuckersworkshop gotcha! i was just wondering because some people say i have do put a little tension so that the chain doesnt sag a little when removing the old one, but from your video and the tsb, it didnt seem like you had anything wedge in there to add any tension. was just a bit confuse...

How did you get the tensioner out? It doesn’t seem to fit through the hole. That would have been very helpful to have shown the actual removal. Any tips?
Agree, that would have been good to film. It was tricky to remove. With the pin in place to keep the tensioner compressed, I used 2 flat head screw drivers to work it out. It took a few attempts but I got it. Good luck!
@@tuckersworkshop I tried the two screwdrivers for another 20 minutes with no luck. After some swearing and a beer, it occurred to me to just use my hands. I just pushed the chain up with one finger and used the others to pull it out from the top. It was way too easy 🤦♂️.

I used a needle nose type pliers in one of the tensioner’s empty bolt holes and wiggled it up and down until I could deliver it. Worked really well.
@@GoGators198 is there a "tension" needed when removing the old cam chain tensioner? so the chain doesnt sag? or its okay to remove the old tensioner cam chain and put the new one in without needing tension on the chain?

Nope, the cam chain tensioner was the problem. I’ve learned there is a check valve in those tensioners that should keep oil in the chain/tensioner. When the check valve in the tensioner goes, the oil slowly drains out after a few hours leaving the chain dry which causes the noise on a cold start.
People are talking about the VTC actuators for the same symptom, I am a bit confused. Didn't you hear any rattle at all after this?
@@mksckumara The VTC actuator was a common problem on the previous generation engine. With the earth dreams engine, the VTC problems have been addressed. Pull up the TSB I mentioned, this is an easy fix. After I replaced it, the cold start rattle went away. The rattle simply comes from the cam chain being dry at startup b/c the check valve in the tensioner went bad allowing the oil to drain away from the cam chain overnight.

Wow, $1,200 bucks! Crazy, it’s an hour job.
Local guy probably doesn't know there's an access plate to change the tensioner. Or he's probably planning on pulling the oil pan, harmonic balancer, and whole timing cover to replace the chain as well as the tensioner.
My local ASE mechanic is charging $150 for Labor on this job. I bought the Part for $65 plus Honda Bond.for $10.75. My total all in $225.

The noise is caused by the cam chain not have sufficient lube at startup. While I don’t know for sure, I suspect it would lead to excessive wear on the chain long term.
What do I do if the rattle is worse

Even in a K-series Honda that has to be approaching the service limit of the engne / car as a whole?
How do you clear off the old Honda bond? How come the dealer wants to replace the entire timing chain as well when replacing this piece?
Because depending how long you drove the vehicle with the bad tensioner, your chain is most likely stretched due to the tensioner not keeping tension on the chain
Do you turn the crankshaft clockwise after putting in the new tensionor ?

When you started it I didn't hear anything except what sounded like 10 keys on your key chain.
I heard it. My 2015 Accord Sport has the same rattle on cold startup, it only lasts 0,5 sec. I got the part from the Honda Estore and had it shipped to my Honda dealer for $65.
Also, you replaced the cam tensioner, is it necessary to replace the whole kit? Or can chain tensioner will suffice?
Some people recommending to replace the whole kit
I’m unfamiliar with a kit. I just followed the TSB which only listed the tensioner.

I think you've got the V6 engine. I know those have the oil filter located behind the passenger wheel.

Looking into mine, V6 2016 Accord. But there's the oil filter where the CTC shows in these. Anyone done one of those?

I bet it still made that noise again if you start it and it makes that noise and let it run even for 30 seconds turn it off and back on you won’t here it once cooled done it will make that noise again
The rattle only happened on cold starts. I replaced the tensioner 40k miles ago and the rattle is gone.
Does this fix affect the timing in any way? Turning the crankshaft makes me a bit nervous.
Turning the crankshaft is not an issue. When you rotate the crankshaft, everything else rotates accordingly.
@@tuckersworkshop Thank you, sorry for my lack of understanding on this, but to do this fix does the timing have to be a TDC, before and after? I realize that we aren't replacing the chain here, but I just want to be certain...thanks. Also, my Accord is a 09', so this fix would still apply, right?
Your ‘09 is a different engine. It’s my understanding that a cold start rattle from the older engines is usually the VTI actuator so I’d investigate that.

Thanks, yes I understand you have the Earth Dream version, but the tensioner itself is literally the same part, or at least ot appears to be.
I have a question though: I'm having a hard time understanding how installing a new tensioner fixes the rattle. If the old tensioner is bad, then wouldn't it extend out too far, in which case wouldn't that mean that the chain has been stretched?
@@094340 It’s my understanding that there’s a check valve in the tensioner. Normally this check valve keeps oil on the chain. When the check valve goes bad, the oil slowly drains down to the pan making the chain “dry.” The rattle you hear at start up is simply a dry chain, as soon as the engine oil reaches the chain then the noise goes away since the chain becomes lubed.
Do they make a gasket for the cover if so do you know the part number
They do not make a gasket you have to use gasket maker and I don’t recommend you use anything but Honda bond, I did my timing chain replacement at 170k and it’s at 240k now and leaking oil all over the engine on timing chain side and I used regular black RTV that you can purchase at Autozone and so now I plan to do the timing cover again unfortunately but use Honda bond this time

Check your rear struts. Mine are worn out and I'm replacing them this weekend. Ordered mine from Rock Auto.
@sugarcreekfarm1 had the car since new and I spent years as a mech in a Mitsubishi Hyundai dealershio... I'm aware of the causes of tire wear but this car did it from new.. first set were mangled by 30 k miles. Was wondering if it was inherent to suspension set up for the model. It's only happens to the rears and the car handles like it's on rails.
Question has any one performed this repair and once successfully installed received a P0341 camshaft position sensor out of rang / chain maybe stretched error ... I had this installed in a 2017 Honda Accord before replaced it was fine after replacement boom .....any information helps at this point before I go in to the timing chain

It’s been 15k miles and I’ve had no issues. This replacement fixed my problem.
When I google rattle on start, vtc Actuator comes up, but my car does not sound like the bad actuator.
It has a rattle for about 1.5 seconds after start up, 2015 accord. Wondering if it’s this piece. (Someone also said it could be the main tensioner pulley) Also, if it is cam chain tensioner, it it serious??
The VTC actuator was a common problem on the previous generation engine. With the earth dreams engine, the VTC problems have been addressed. Pull up the TSB I mentioned, this is an easy fix. After I replaced it, the cold start rattle went away. The rattle simply comes from the cam chain being dry at startup b/c the check valve in the tensioner went bad allowing the oil to drain away from the cam chain overnight. Having a dry chain at startup isn’t good and over time could lead to some major issues if not addressed.

It's a sport. only the EX's and above have push start.
